Great Tablet --- Now I can get rid of my Desktop!

Absolutely a life changing device for me. I have to give up my office with the arrival of a baby boy. I fretted about this as I love my study but I really like my desktop computer in the study. My wise wife suggested I use one of our existing notebooks instead --- a no go for me. If I am sitting at a desk then I don't want to be on a laptop conversely for mobile use I am not a fan of notebooks due to the weight and battery life. I went to the Microsoft Store after watch all the microsoft commercials. I was hesitant as I had previously updated my desktop home computer to Windows 8 and what a hassle as I had to learn something new and different. I really liked the Windows Surface at the MS Store though --- Windows 8 was truly made for a tablet but the Surface ran Windows RT and if I lose my desktop then I would not be able to use my Windows programs (Quicken, etc)with the Surface. The Microsoft Rep told me that the Surface Pro was on the way but would weigh 2lbs and have a short battery life. No thanks. I came home and did some research and found the Asus Vivotab Smart which magically ran full Windows 8 on an Intel Atom processor. I was again hesitant as I had a netbook with an Atom processor years ago and it was slow. But the reviews were great on the Asus Vivotab Smart. So I bought it along with the cover and keyboard. Game charger. Its super fast and seamless. Plays movies without a hitch. The system is as fast as my eyes can watch the screen and fingers can swipe. Windows 8 is weird on a desktop but is by far the best tablet OS going. I liked my Ipad and wifes Andriod phone but they were toys to a certain extent. This has all the same features except that Windows 8 is more intuitive as a tablet than the Ipad and Android. Plus I can run my beloved Quicken and Microsoft Office, etc. I won't miss my desktop computer and office (save that is where I watched football). Pluses: - 9 hrs of battery life (I can confirm this) - Windows 8 is the ultimate tablet OS (use your thumbs) - weighs ~1.25lbs --- light - get the cover and keyboard --- the are a must, the keyboard is normal sized and the cover is a kickstand also - Screen is super clear and fresh --- viewing angles are great - Windows Metro/modern is great and it took getting this tablet for make me figure that out - Full Windows although I only find myself use quicken, office for the traditional windows programs - Take the dive and sign up for the integrated Microsoft experience: outlook.com email and use skydrive cloud for you storage which is free. I resisted this at first but once I switched over to outlook.com IMAP email and the cloud for "my documents" --- I realized I was stupid for waiting so long. - Thus Windows 8, outlook.com and skydrive synchs all my computers and tablets seamlessly with zero work. So with this tablet synched my email, music, documents, pictures, etc when I turned on the tablet for the first time and logged in with my email. - Kills complexity in my life. Now my computers, notebooks and this tablet are on the same synchronized platform even my background picture and passwords are the same. So I am going to sell my Ipad (never liked Itunes) and my wifes Andriod phone is on chopping block. Minuses: - The App store is still developing which is a bit of a hassle. Netflix and audible.com, fitbit are there but my wife wants the facebook app, pinterest (wife's request), skyward and a few others. - Apparently computer writers/reporters are fanboys of Apple and Google which will be a disservice as their readers will stay with those platforms instead of switching to Windows 8 tablets thus the App store may be slow to reach a critical mass of users. - Microsoft made a mistake with the Surface. Its beautiful but RT is limited compared to Windows they should have taken the Asus approach with full Windows 8 on a Intel Atom. This tablet is lighter, has the same battery life and all the windows goodies. - at $499 its more expensive than Androids although beats the pants off Apples considering you full Windows 8 - Does not come with Office installed Get this tablet.

A testament to this product: I've had many (too many) electronics that I LOVE, but this is the first time I've hopped on here to write a review for one :) I purchased this 3 days ago and have to say that I am surprised at the negative reviews. ASUS must have gotten things together and fixed the issues with this tablet. Granted, it does take a bit to update, but be patient and you'll be rewarded. I picked this up primarily because I've had a Nexus 7, iPad, HP TouchPad, etc, etc, etc and I always found myself returning each because I didn't use it. No more! This little tablet gives me the nice "tablet" functionality (in all honesty, apps are still relatively scarce, but that will be rectified), while also allowing me to run desktop apps - the ONE thing that slim tablets have been missing. I am a graduate student and use SigmaPlot to run all my data analyses. It's a full stats, graphing, function-fitting program and it runs FLAWLESSLY. I would say it runs just as well (if not better) as my new MacBook Air runs it in Parallels with 2GB of RAM dedicated to it. Granted, you're not going to be running Photoshop or graphics intensive programs on it - even "Jetpack Joyride" shows framerate issues, but if you're looking to engage in tablet behavior with a little bit of light desktop use, ASUS has hit the nail on the head. Pros: Battery life is stellar at 9+ hours Nice IPS display USB OTG Expandable storage (a must, since Windows takes up about 30GB) Mini HDMI out Runs my desktop apps! Very solid build quality Perfect size for a tablet/PC Responsive touchscreen - except in Chrome (native Windows app) Cons: A little slow to update Graphics-intensive programs will not be your friend Few accessories (it's a bit bigger than the RT version, but I've managed to squeeze it into a case) A little on the quiet side - headphones are a must Pick up the Logitech 810 keyboard and a mouse and you're good to go!

    Great intermediate tablet for business

I purchased the ASUS ME400C Vivo Smart Tab about 6 weeks ago. I have taken the tablet on several business trips and overall, I believe it to be an excellent machine for business and some entertainment use. Performance specs are not great, limited storage and processing speed, but the tablet has performed flawlessly for me even compared to my high end laptop. I have Office 13 loaded, Adobe writer, and several other apps which all perform fine. Deleting factory installed software has been no problem either like on some android devices. The ME400C uses a full version of Win8. Some recent publications have slammed Win8 and I may agree that Win8 is not for non-touch screen machines. But I have to say, I really like Win8 on this tablet. It starts up and shuts down very, very fast which is a big plus allowing me to get it started, grab some quick data and shut it down during meetings. The 10.1 inch screen is a perfect compromise between an entertainment device and a productivity device. It's easy to use on an airplane, easy to carry around, but is large enough to actually work on with a keyboard. I purchased the ASUS keyboard but I didn't like the way it functioned as a protective case. I purchased a RooCase as stated on another review here and modified it slightly to be able to carry the keyboard around. I can deploy the keyboard when I want to but also use the functions of the case when only finger swiping is required. The screen is very good but I noticed it is less bright than other tablets. I only noticed this in the showroom. I have no complaints about it myself. Speaker volume is about the only complaint I have. Simple to correct by loading a different media player that boosts volume to 200% such as VLC Media Player. The number of Win8 games and apps is not great yet but this has not concerned me as I use it for business primarily. I use this tablet to compliment my main machine in the office by using cloud storage for my files which can be accessed from anywhere (over smartphone net connection). Overall, I really like this tablet. The price is right for me even though it lacks the performance of other tablets that cost twice as much.

One of the best mobile devices I've ever used.

I've owned multiple devices starting with a Palm, then original iPhone and 3Gs, iPad, several Android phones and tablets, as well as Apple and Windows based desktop products. I switched to Android for mobile and Windows for desktop (moved away from Apple) and was REALLY happy. Then I got my Asus VivoTab Smart and, for me anyway, it was a game changer. This is by far the best tablet, and probably the best mobile device, that I've ever used. The capabilities are just amazing it's a FANTASTIC tablet and a VERY GOOD netbook class device. All Metro apps I've tried have worked flawlessly. Most desktop apps have also worked flawlessly, including GIMP, LibreOffice, Mixcraft 6, Google Chrome, etc... Because this is basically a netbook (as far as desktop apps are concerned) some of them take a few seconds longer to launch or a bit longer to process.. but for heavy processing I have my desktop machine. There are some things that will not run, like Google Earth.. it's so slow that it's not even useable. For all the stuff I use my current laptop for, I can definitely use this machine instead. In fact, this weekend I am posting both my laptop and Android tablet on Craigslist as this device replaced them both for me. The device isn't perfect.. if you want to play desktop games (more than extremely basic ones) then this isn't the device for you. If you're going to be doing heavy graphical stuff or heavy processing then it's also probably not the device for you. If you want to be able to use pretty much any Metro apps as well as Office, web browsing, photo editing, basic video editing, etc.. then this device is definitely worth a look. I debated between this and the Surface (simply because it's faster), but I much prefer the VivoTab form factor and for what I did on my laptop and tablet (prior to buying this) I could not justify another $400 to $500 for the surface. I definitely am 100% sure I made the right choice.

Does What I Need it to do and More!

I was initially worried about this tablet as it was panned as a tablet that couldn't play games and what I wanted was a tablet that could handle some business and games on the road. I initially thought I was going to have to spring for the Pro but I thought I'd try this one out first and see what it can do and it does what I need. First off, it handles the basics well. It runs Office, you can surf the internet and you can listen to movies and music. The mystery was games and I like the RTS and turn based strategy based and 2 of my favorites in particular are the Stronghold Collection and Civilization IV. To my surprise, the tablet runs them great - no lag - just perfect although I would suggest a Bluetooth mouse or the transleeve keyboard for ease of use of the games. So if you like some of the older games and you were holding off over its capabilities - then don't hold back. It has turned out to be a nice surprise and it's a keeper and I can save the $400 for the Pro. I will say, it will not tackle the current shooters and Civ V if you want to run those but for the ones I like, it's great. The bad is how they situated the speaker only on one side - seemed like they should have put one in on the other side as the one sounds good but it throws you off being on only one side of the tablet. Just use headphones - they sound great. As for storage, buy a 64GB Micro SD card and put your movies, music, photos on the card and save the internal storage for programs. If you're wandering how to load CD games, setup your DVD drive on your laptop at home as a shared read only drive and use that to load games over your wireless network at home. The USB port is for charging only. I couldn't get it to work with other USB devices even through a hub. Overall, this thing is cool and is going to make traveling both productive and fun especially with the transleeve which I have to buy from another company since Best Buy doesn't seem to carry it - unfortunately, BB, you just missed out on another $130. I suggest you give this tablet a test drive before you spend a lot on others if you're not looking for heavy, heavy computing or to run recent run games that need 1GB graphic cards. Good job ASUS!

    A real Windows 8 Tablet

Asus has released a great package with the vivotab smart. I was originally waiting around for the Microsoft Surface Pro. After it was released I became disenchanted. It was very heavy (holding it with one hand was not comfortable), and the battery life was low. It was indeed a full ultrabook without the keyboard, and it was a brilliant piece of engineering, but as a tablet there are concerns that need to be handled. I needed a different set of engineering compromises. I needed the VivoTab Smart. The VivoTab Smart is built on a different set of compromises. The focus here is battery life, and weight. It weighs less than an Ipad 3 (and is actually more comfortable to use than my ipad due to the weight). It also has a good enough battery life (8 hours). This means it functions fantastically as a tablet. Well an indoor tablet. The screen is good, but not quite bright enough for easy outdoor use. So it does lose a point there. So how does the VivoTab Smart work as a windows 8 machine? Well... it's slow. It feels responsive enough, but make no mistake... but try to do something cpu intensive, like re-encode video, and you'll feel exactly how slow the cpu is. That said if this is a "competent" computer for most tasks. There are a few complaints online about he resolution of the machine #1366x768#. Let me tell you know. The resolution is _great_ for this machine. The reason why it is "great" is Windows. Windows is _really_ bad at scaling text, and trust me you don't want to try to hit those tiny little icons, and read tiny text at 1920x1080 resolution #Surface Pro resolution#. Until windows redoes scaling, 1366x768 will work just fine for me in a 10 inch tablet thank you very much. In conclusion this is one of the first full fledged Windows 8 Tablets. It is a mixed bag but mostly good, and some bad, but certainly one of the best buys in a full fledged tablet. Pros + Weight + Battery life + Form Factor + Screen Resolution #great for windows# + Full Windows 8 + Very good value Cons - Screen Brightness - CPU speed # or lack there of # - Screen Resolution #low res for video though#

    Lighter than IPad 4

Kudos to Asus for entering the Windows 8 world. This 10 inch tablet is very light weight and looks great. It is barely longer in length than an Ipad but shorter in width and thinner than the IPad. This is full Windows 8 and not RT. It comes with a micoUSB and microSD slots. My only complaints would be lack of stylus support, port sizes, and no 3G/4G option, but for the price this is a great deal. The screen quality is great comparable to IPad 2 but does not compare side by side to a IPad 4 Retina display. I would definitely recommend an accidental warranty as since this is lighter, it does not feel as sturdy as an IPad. The 64GB hard drive is really a 33GB hard drive because of the space Windows 8 consumes. You can use Adobe Photoshop on here which takes about 10 seconds to open up. There is also a magnetic keyboard option for this tablet but is not yet sold through Best Buy at the time of this review. The 10.1 inch alternatives are the Dell Latitude 10 which offer full USB and SD slots and swappable battery or the Levono Thinkpad 2 which offers a stylus but has USB issues; both of these are more expensive and heavier than an IPad but offer 3G/4G support.

Does what its expected to do, initial updates take some time but after that the experience is amazing. Its a very stable tablet and works as expected. The build quality is solid and there is no flex no matter how you hold the tablet. Despite being solidly built Asus managed to keep the weight of this tablet to 580grams which makes it really easy to hold The atom processor is great for daily tasks like web browsing, videos, games from windows stores, music, Microsoft office etc. You can also use your legacy desktop apps since its Intel. The tab has no problems in multi tasking or switching between the apps. All in all this generation of atom processors is much better than before. Its good for tablet computing The battery life is approx. 9-10hrs which is great. Windows 8 has a little learning curve. Takes about a day to get used to and works amazing on a tablet. Bottom line its a affordable tablet not just for content consumption but also content creation. Hope this review helps you.

A very functional tablet for the price

It is a Windows 8 tablet and hence can run most of the legacy programs. Though, I have an Ipad and Samsung galaxy tab 10.1, I found that to run most of the programs like, MS Office, flash content, I wanted a windows8 tablet. In that sense-more functionalty for a given price, I believe this can easily replace the other two that I have. It is not a full laptop replacement, though it may be used for that purpose. It is very fast for the routine purposes, but not for power/memory hungry programs, for which Surface Pro is the best in tablet format. It is light and very easy to use (if you are familiar with windows8). The camera is decent. Skydrive helps to store all the files on cloud conveniently. Photos look very crisp and well saturated. Volume is as good or as low as in other tablets. If the expectations are as for a tablet, this is highly desirable. If you are looking for a laptop replacement, this may not meet your needs and demands.

Bought this as a replacement for my old laptop I've had since I graduated high school. Love the set-up and features of Windows on this device. (I suppose if you're not fond of Windows 8, this isn't the tablet for you). While some are not fond of the start screen, I find it very easy to use and navigate. The gestures and functions you can use on the touch-screen are very convenient and, again, make navigation from one screen, or app, to the next very simple. On a side note, I use this tablet for sketching and drawing on a regular basis and have been EXTREMELY pleased with the touch-screen's sensitivity in reading my stylus-strokes. I highly suggest this tablet for people who have an interest in digital art or the like- it works exceedingly well in this area. On the downside, I am a little disappointed with the lack of apps common on other operating systems not being in the Windows app marketplace. This is a small issue to me, however, and has no real effect on how I view the overall tablet. I also have slight issues when trying to type quickly on the on-screen keyboard, but this is also true for me on any touch-screen. (I have not yet bought the dockable keyboard). Overall this is a great tablet- definitely worth every cent!

I'm 2 days into the new VIVOTAB SMART and I must say I am much more impressed than I expected. The entire WIndows 8 experience is perfect - My view that microsoft was dated are behind me -- they waited and got it right. Its the perfect blend of past and future and I guarantee anyone with any creative cells in their body will embrace this change. Apple has nothing that can touch this product in terms of pricepoint, productivity and open-source. Yes this is my first review -- EVER. I chose to write this because of the all the critics out there that believe apple and android are at the cutting edge. If your idea of productivity is angry birds and surfing web with no flash - have at it. I know where I'll be -- Hats off to ASUS for a great product - I also own a nexus7 which was also very good value.

I love this tablet. My wife had a MS Surface RT and its great but runs Win 8rt. This does everything as well for the same price but can run my old pc software. Speeds have been fine on everything I've tried to use t for but I had realistic expectations about its capability. For most basic office tasks it works fine. Keeps me in touch while I'm out in the field. tasks in Word or Excel w/o a mouse can be awkward (I'm not too proficient at shortcut keys). Win 8 takes some getting used to but I adapted. Having my wife's Surface before helped ease the transition now most things area second nature; its definitely made for touch screens. Its much more durable than I thought, too.

I traded my iPad 3 in on this tablet, and I am very happy with that decision. Performance is good, especially in "metro" apps, and the battery life is great (9 or more hours). Screen, camera, and build quality are excellent. The best thing about this tablet is the fact that it is compatible with ALL Windows applications. Many tablets feel very limited due to their "mobile-only" app selections, but this one feels more like a full-fledged computer. If you pair up a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, it can essentially be used as a laptop. Kudos to both Microsoft and ASUS for producing a great tablet experience.

I would encourage my friends to choose this devise because it makes beautiful pictures, is beautiful to look at and runs more than one app at the time. The desktop window needs to fit the screen better it does not respond to stretch and snap; therefore reading and using the menu keys is harder that it should be. The Windows 8 leaves out "save as", "move to" and the Documents directory should be more adaptable. I have not found the battery life to be as advertised. We are still very satisfied with this device and would choose to purchase it..

I use it for casual things at home and it's great!! If I had school or had a use for business it would be great, too!! This tablet has all of the features of other full Windows 8 tablets and is cheaper. I've seen some for almost $1,000 compared to this one for $499. The ASUS WebStorage is a great feature for Microsoft Office and other uses. I use it a lot. This is a great tablet!!

I really like the Asus Vivotab. I am so disappointed because I had a problem with Windows 8, called Asus three (3) times and the end result was send it to them for the Windows 8 error code. I'm sorry there was no other way to handle it and I did not want to part with my tablet. It's a fantastic tablet, other than the windows issue.
