Absolutely horrible ASUS customer service
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I would not even give 1 star. Worst customer service ever. DO NOT purchase ASUS products. I sent my laptop to Asus for minor repair and they damaged my laptop. Made it unusable and after patiently following their procedures for 1 month to get a replacement they sent an incorrect replacement. Now they expect me to pay for shipping and send back the laptop and start over the entire process. Agents are rude and not helpful at all.

Very powerful laptop with a great battery life
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is a very fast machine for the price point. The ram helps it run multiple operations and stream videos without any hesitation. Out of the box it came with a charger (usb-c) and setup was a breeze. I was able to log into my microsoft account and used another old backup of an older laptop and was able to get into some work items using excel, powerpoint and creating PDFs. All while streaming some videos. I use some larger spreadsheets for engineering and it calculated those sheets with ease. I also opened multiple tabs to see if I could use up the ram but after having excel, revit which is used to design buildings in 3d and 18 tabs in chrome as well as streaming video the laptop performed fantastic. The video playback has very good picture quality and even watching some intense action scenes while having other programs open I didn't notice any slowness. The sound out of the speakers is real nice and I really like the touchpad where I can control the sound, brightness and swipe between items. The double tap feature on the touch pads these days works great as some I have noticed are to sensitive but this one was just about right. The battery life was great I used it for most of a day and didn't have to charge it and that was using 3d BIM software Revit and that takes alot of memory to run. I didn't run the brightness to bright but I plan on trying to see how long in real life the battery will last but I am very happy with it. There are plenty of I/O ports including a full size usb as well as usb-c and usb-a. I would highly recommend this to someone that needs a little more power in this range of laptops.

Lightweight durable fast!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Asus is tops for personal laptops. High performance, beautiful form, and practical design makes the brand an easy choice. This beat replaced a four year old Republic of Gaming model that I did not want to let go of, but I wanted the new processor this one offered. The ROG models are a little heftier so the lighter profile of this machine is a welcome change. The screen is edge to edge beauty with a customizable backlit keyboard and super thin footprint. An Ultra processor handles any Power apps or AI tasks with ease and finesse. If you have not used one, you’ll be delighted at the subtle differences in performance. Intel brings their A game here, and Asus keeps the whole package literally cool throughout usage during heavy lifting and rigorous tasks. I steam PC games on this system and though not meant for gaming, I have yet to see it stumble. For streaming legacy titles, I do not need a dedicated rig. I can play and work from the same LIGHTWEIGHT laptop. That was a surprising and welcome discovery, as I was not expecting it to handle the games as well as it does. Do not shy away from Asus in favor of more familiar or larger brands. They build a tight and fun to use machines made from top rate materials (that’s what you’ll notice first—then you’ll fall in love with the ease of use!) I highly recommend.

Near perfect portability
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have been using this laptop daily for over a week, maybe two, before writing this review. I really wanted to get some time on it. My other laptops are all pretty much forgotten at this point. There is no best laptop for everyone. Every laptop, no matter how good it is, is a collection of trade offs. The best laptop, for any particular person, is the laptop that made the trade offs that most align with that individual's needs. I, myself personally, do have a preference for small and portable laptops, but not so small and portable that sacrifices have to be made to get there that make them harder to use on their own. This is because something small and portable can still be hooked up to a larger monitor, external keyboard, etc. when I am stationary, but I can easily transport it when needed. This has put the sweet spot for me, for years, in the 12” to 13” range (smaller than this). To get down into that profile, some tradeoffs tend to get made, like higher cost, less available ports, less room for battery, less screen real estate, especially height, but they are tradeoffs I am willing to accept. I know a lot of people don’t connect their laptops to external monitors like I do, and for them, maybe something with a larger screen lets them work more comfortably, which, again, is why there is no best laptop for anyone. Staying above 12” allows me to have a full size keyboard while staying pretty much as small as can be. 14” widescreen laptops were really at the high end, in size, of what I ever liked to tote around. With that said, that is not the only form factor I have used in the past, or currently even use today. I would also get, and still own bigger laptops too, when I need the graphics power of a GPU in a laptop, for example. I don’t like carrying them around though, I use them, because I need what they have to offer. This laptop, for me, is my new personal sweet spot. The width footprint is basically identical to my 13” 2 in 1. However it is about an inch deeper, front to back, which provides more screen space, especially height, with very little sacrifice in portability. So it is almost as portable as a 12”, almost an imperceptible difference in width from a 13”, but with more usable screen real estate. As the screen reaches almost edge to edge, it feels like a 12” of old, back when displays had bezels. This also leaves plenty of room for a generous sized trackpad, with room for regions for controlling volume, screen brightness, scrolling, etc.. It is not a 2 in 1, but in the 5-6 2 in 1s I have owned over the years, I have found, especially once I get past a 12” display, I don’t really like using a 2 in 1 in a tablet mode. The display is really too big at that point, and no matter how thin it is, having the keyboard flipped around the back of the display is still too bulky for comfortable use. So, for me past 12”, I am not really interested in a 2 in 1, and even at 12”, I would rather have a 10-11” tablet with a completely removable keyboard. I say all this to explain why this not being a 2 in 1 is not an issue at all, as far as I am concerned. Even though this is not a 2 in 1, it does still have a touchscreen display, but in all honesty, that is the one feature on this laptop I will probably never use, but that’s me. So, it is a bit wider than it needs to be for the keyboard, but I think that extra width is really worth it in this case for that extra screen width, and the extra depth for the extra screen height. Some laptops use that extra real estate on either side of the keyboard for upward facing speakers, which they don’t do here, I think because they use the sides for venting, but it still sounds really good. The build quality is great. The keyboard and the backlight passthrough keys are also fantastic. Just enough to light, but not so bright to blind you. Not only that, but in this diminutive chassis, they still somehow managed to find room for a full HDMI port, something my 13” was not able to pull off. This lets me leave the HDMI dongle at home. Any smaller or thinner than it is, and I don’t think that would be possible. With its great battery life, as long as you charge it every night, you may also be able to leave the power supply at home too. While I haven’t gotten the claimed 18 hours, it can last me all day. This actually makes it even more portable than something slightly smaller where you need to carry a dongle to plug in to an external display and a brick to keep it charged. It also has a camera cover, which I think should be pretty standard today, but for some reason, it is not. It also features facial recognition making logging in quick and painless. It just checks off almost every single box I look for. As I said before, every laptop is a series of trade offs, and as far as I am concerned, this laptop has made most of the right ones. While it is not the cheapest laptop out there, it is also not super expensive. It comes with the latest Intel Ultra 9 Series 2 285H chip, which is what allows it to have the graphics performance and battery life it does. Coupled with the generous 1TB of storage and the 32GB of ram, I really think this is a good value. Also, the 1920x1200 OLED display is crisp and clear, It looks great and is perfectly usable, which makes it, to me, not worth the tradeoffs needed for a higher end display. In daily use, this thing is also running very cool. It is really quiet too. If the fan is even running, which I am not sure it is, while doing day to day tasks and browsing the web, not often anyway, you can’t hear it. Not only does it have great battery life, but it charges really fast too. It did warm up a bit while it was charging, but as the battery life is so good, I don’t need to keep it plugged in and charging while working with it on my lap as I do many other laptops. Also, while working with it in that way, I don’t feel like I am blocking all of its vents, as I often do, nor does it act like it is not getting enough air flow. Out of the box, it did require a couple of software updates, even a firmware update, but they were fairly quick and painless. I can usually find a few things to complain about with any laptop placed in my hands, because I have a lot of different needs and it is always hard to find something where I don’t have to sacrifice something. Small and portable, but at the sacrifice of performance or missing ports, or high performing, but bulky and power hungry with a big power brick and short battery life. With this laptop, I am mostly at a loss. I actually wouldn’t change much. I might have swapped the positions of one of the two thunderbolt 4 ports with the USB A port. That way it would have a USB C port on each side. This would increase flexibility for where to plug in a power supply for charging or an external monitor. I also prefer the front edge of the body where my wrists wrest to have a slightly more rounded corner. While this isn’t the sharpest edge I have encountered on a laptop, and while the extra depth of this does provides enough space that my wrists don’t have to wrest on that sharper edge, it is a force of habit. I think that those are the only changes I can think of at the moment. All in all, I am just super impressed with it. It checks most of my boxes. I can’t think of any other model I have seen that I would prefer over this at the moment. I think it is a great mix of portability, price and performance. They have made all the right trade offs. It is near perfect, for me. I would also have no problem recommending this to almost anyone as a starting point when they ask me what laptop they should consider buying. I have a friend that has been asking me to help them choose something for a few months, and after using this for just a week, I told them this is what I think they should get. I think it would be a great laptop for almost anyone. Not only would I recommend it to a friend, I already have.

Great laptop but falls just short of 5 stars
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bottom Line Up Front: This is a great laptop, but I cannot give it five stars. If you want a fast, lightweight, non-gaming machine with a nice touchscreen display, this is a great pick. However there are a few reasons explained below that prevent me from giving it a perfect five. If I could, I would go 4.5, or even 4.75. However, I can't justify a five for a machine that costs this much. Having said that, I do recommend this laptop. Positives: - This PC is extremely fast. The Intel Core Ultra 9 Arrow Lake processor with 32 GB of RAM makes a huge difference. - My two year old previous machine had an Intel Core i7 with 16 GB Ram was no slouch. This machine is so much faster. - The OLED graphics are very nice. It is a FHD+ machine (1920x1200). However, could a PC at this price point have a bit more resolution? Your call. - The touchscreen works well. - The PC is very lightweight - only 2.8 pounds. It is really easy to carry and maneuver. - I like the Copilot key and am finding myself using Copilot more and more. And Copilot runs much faster on this machine than my previous PC. - The power supply is "integrated" which means the supply has one plug (albeit a bit bulky) with the USB C cable attached. You don't need a separate "brick" as my previous laptop. - The PC has a headphone jack. It may not get used much in the world of bluetooth headphones, but it is good to see a manufacturer still incorporating one. - The WiFi 7 connection worked fantastically. The speed obtained was almost the same as a wired ethernet connection I have in the same room with many walls between it and the router. - Two Thunderbolt 4 ports at 40 Gbps are good (albeit fairly standard for a laptop in this price range). - There was little "software bloat" preloaded. I only had to remove a few items. Kudos to Asus for that. Negatives: - There is no media card reader. It is shameful that a machine in this price range does not include a media card reader. - If Asus is looking for reducing costs, it would be so much better to have a media card reader than a headphone jack - which won't get used much by most. - The USB 3.2 port is first Gen 1 and therefore has a speed rating of only 5 Gbps. For a $1300 machine, I would expect Gen 2 USB 3.2 USB port (10 Gbps). - This is not a 2 in 1 laptop that has a tablet mode. Again, maybe a $1300 laptop should be (although because it isn't, it is probably a bit lighter than if it was a 2-1). - I can understand why Asus put they delete key in the very top right hand side of the keyboard, but the power button is directly to the left and is a bit quirky. - A very basic quick start guide is included, but it took a bit of internet searching to find the full electronic PDF manual. - The 112 page manual at first glance seemed like it should be good, but it was pretty basic and most of it was simple Windows instructions. - The manual did not mention apps that came pre-loaded like MyAsus, GlideX or Screen Xpert - apps with which I am unfamiliar since this is my first Asus PC. - The audio quality (even with a separate app called "Dolby Access" (again not described in the manual)) was certainly no great shakes - especially with the speakers on the bottom of the machine. It is fine, but not very impressive. Having said, I personally never listen to anything worthwhile through the PC speakers, but I have heard better. - Windows 11 Pro would also have been a nice touch in a $1300 PC. Summary: The two predominant reasons I cannot give 5 stars is due to the lack of a media card reader and, secondarily, the USB 3.2 port is Gen 1. For a machine in this price range, a media card reader should be standard, and it should possess a Gen 2 USB 3.2 port. The electronic PDF manual was also a bit lame and failed to explain some of the embedded Asus apps. But this laptop is a speed demon. I love it. It is lightweight and the WiFi 7 was also extremely fast. So if you can do without a media card reader and a Gen 2 USB 3.2 port, this laptop, should be at the top of your list. Recommended.

Portable Power in a Solid Package
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Asus has refreshed their lineup of the popular Zenbook, this model featuring the latest top end chip from Intel, the Ultra 9 285h, and loaded with 32gb of RAM and 1TB of storage. Should you consider this laptop for your on-the-go computing needs? Let’s dive in and find out. The packaging is an unassuming carboard box, like many non-gamer laptops these days. Opening it up, the laptop is slightly elevated and easy to remove with minimal packaging, all of which appears to be recyclable, minus the thin plastic wrap that protects the laptop during shipping. Other than the laptop, there is a compact 65W USB-C power supply (that sadly lacks folding plugs) and some basic documentation. As the laptop is unwrapped I was immediately struck by how solid the build quality feels for a thin and light laptop. It rivals the build quality of Apple or Microsoft Surface laptops. The chassis and lid are all metal, and it’s very nice. It feels sturdy, Asus even brags that these thin and light laptops are military drop rated. It doesn’t show smudges easily and has an understated and classy finish. Powering up the laptop, you are greeted with the usual Windows 11 startup fun, with updates etc to download and get going with. After all of that is complete, you land on a very clean and refreshingly uncluttered desktop. Asus has kept the bloat to a minimum here. No crazy built in software trials to delete, just their useful “MyAsus” software to perform driver and system updates, and set some of the system settings such as fan presets and power levels. Speaking of – I recommend downloading the available updates right away from MyAsus. There are firmware updates for the SSD and a BIOS update, amongst others. I also downloaded the Intel Support Assist software to get some of the latest drivers directly from Intel, especially the Arc Graphics drivers and software. This model is equipped with a 1920x1200 resolution OLED touchscreen display that is locked at 60hz. While not the highest refresh rate or display resolution, it is clear and has the extremely high contrast, vibrant colors, and response time that only OLED can provide. It does support HDR and looks very good for images or video. It’s functional and can get bright enough for most settings if needed. Performance-wise, the Ultra 9 will chew through just about anything you can throw it at. Coupled with a whopping 32gb of memory and a 1TB NVMe solid state drive, this laptop can crank out productivity all day. It features an NPU and GPU that enable the latest Copilot+ onboard AI features, if those are important to you. It can even play many games with the onboard Arc graphics. While it can’t rival a discrete graphics chip, it does support Intel’s advanced XeSS AI upscaling and the 32gb of high speed system memory means there is enough space to load higher resolution textures when gaming. It has the same chipset as some handheld gaming PCs, but with a bigger battery, display, and keyboard, all in a thin and light form factor. You’ll have to pack your own controller though. Under full load you can hear the cooling fan, but it isn’t overly loud and the laptop gets warm but never hot. For connections, the Zenbook offers 2 Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, a USB-A port, a headphone jack, and one standard-size HDMI port. It’s enough for most uses, and you can always connect to a dock for more ports if needed. The keyboard (which I am using to write this review) and touchpad both feel high quality. The touchpad supports gestures on the edges – slide up or down on the left side to control volume, across the top to skip tracks back or forward, or up and down on the right side to control brightness. I did manage to accidentally activate the controls a couple of times, but overall it’s handy to have those options close. If it’s a constant bother you can turn them off in the MyAsus software. The keyboard has the right amount of resistance and keys snap back into place; it doesn’t feel mushy. The keys are also backlit. The speakers, although featuring a Dolby Atmos label, are just ok. Laptop speakers don’t have a reputation for being amazing, and these are pretty typical. Most users will be using a headset or other speakers for any serious audio, so these serve their purpose if you need audio on the go. Battery life seems decent for a laptop using a top end Ultra 9. It’s a little more power hungry than some ultra-efficient chips, but the tradeoff is a powerhouse of a laptop in a light and thin package. In the hour or so I’ve taken to write this review so far, it’s only gone down 5%. Of course, performing more demanding tasks can burn through the battery much more quickly. Overall, if you are looking for a new Windows 11 laptop for general and content use that can dabble in games and more advanced content creation, this is one you should consider. The build quality and materials are both top notch. If you want to spend a little more, you can get the step up 3k OLED display, but for most people this model’s display is just fine, and takes less power to run.

This Zenbook 14 can go the distance!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As the happy owner of an ASUS - ROG Zephyrus 14" FHD 144Hz Gaming Laptop with the AMD Ryzen 7 with 16GB DDR4 Memory, a 512 GB SSD and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 for almost a year and half now that I have used as my "travel laptop" due to not only all the features mentioned above but also it's small footprint and light weight, I was thrilled to be able to review this newest ASUS Zenbook! And yes, I bought that ASUS ROG from Best Buy with my own money and it has been more than worth the purchase price! This new ASUS Zenbook is beyond light and despite its near featherweight it, like my ASUS Zephyrus, has proven quite durable in the short time I have been testing it. I often travel by motorcycle through the mid and western states to visit family and this 14" ASUS Zenbook is the perfect travel companion for such adventures! It recently survived 1,500+ miles of motorcycle travel across 3 western states and never failed me in any way shape or form. Prior to heading out, the first thing I did was transfer all my photos and music to this laptop. I like music and now there are over 30,000 songs on the Z'book along with over 100 recent photographs from my recent trip with a stop in the historic town of Tombstone, AZ! I am not much of a photographer but a family member is (they use Digital SLR cameras!) and they often send me photographs of their motorcycle rides and this Zenbook reproduces their pictures superbly! My photos are more memories, theirs are more artwork! I tend to think most folk here use their laptops for pleasure and as I am retired that is exactly what I do. I have used this in hotels to watch a movie on MAX, Prime Video, MGM+ and Disney Plus and without a doubt the video displayed is gorgeous! I have a 4K Laptop that I bought years ago from Best Buy and that screen's display is subjectively slightly worse than the stunning Full High Definition OLED screen on this Zenbook (and yes, I am aware that the source of the movie is important!). Having said that, it is equally important to acknowledge that technology marches on and the OLED screen on this is an outstanding example of just how good things such as computer screens are becoming better and better with the advancement of technology! The speakers, though small are more than adequate and up to the task of playing the traditional Jazz and Pop Vocals of the '40s on up through the '80s without a glitch that I enjoy. I don't expect deep bass but I do expect no distortion at the comfortable level that I listen music and watch movies with and the Zenbook doesn't disappoint. Being a retired Electronics Technician, I take good care of my equipment be it a test item from a manufacturer or one I have bought myself from Best Buy. I also notice build quality which leads to a long and useful life due to the use of quality materials which yield excellent real world durability. Like that years old 4K laptop and my 1.5 year old ASUS ROG Zephyrus 14" laptop, I have zero concerns that this 14" ASUS Zenbook will be just as durable and useful to me in the years to come. I also performed multiple download and upload speed checks with the average download at home being well into the high 600 mbps and uploads averaging over 100 mbps. Said tests were done in my home and on the road at hotels using Speedtest's site and hotel speeds were not nearly as fast as my home's network but I never experienced and problems. Music and movies were played without any buffering even in hotels and as I said, the picture on this 14" OLED Zenbook is wonderful. I have no hesitation in recommending the ASUS Zenbook 14 to anyone that wants a very fast, very portable, quality built laptop for not only home use but travel. I subjected it to my personal litmus test of traveling with me via my motorcycle for over 1,500 miles and this is yet another real world reason I can recommend this Zenbook. For those that say my experience wasn't long enough I would remind you that my ASUS ROG 14" laptop has survived literally thousands miles on trips from the west coast to the mid west of America and still looks and works like NEW! That is proof enough for me that this Zenbook should be with me for years to come. I will take good care of it as I do all my equipment. It earned its 5 Star rating from me because it does everything I ask of it without fault or fail.
