Ultraportable durable notebook with no compromises

Asus ZenBook Q408UG is an affordable slim powerful notebook pc with no compromise on build quality or performance. This laptop has 14-inch full HD frameless Nano edge display that provides
great picture quality. AMD Ryzen 5 processor with GeForce MX450 is good for everyday work with multitasking.
What is in the box: Asus ZenBook notebook pc, 65 W USB C power adapter, Manual/warranty sheets.
Measurement & Weight: It measures 12.6 x 8.25 x 0.62 inches (32 x 21 x 1.59cm) and weighs 2.95 pounds (1.34kg).
Display: 14-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080)
Color: Light Grey
Design: This 14-inch NanoEdge display has a thin bezel with ASUS logo on the front. Due to its thin bezel on all four sides the videos are more impressive. Brushed silver on the top edge and large track pad is good. Asus used the ErgoLift hinge where the bottom of the laptop lifts up at a slight angle when opened fully. This is a great design to open the laptop in one hand and very useful for typing both ergonomically (optimal typing position) and for air flow/heat expulsion, enhanced audio performance. Notebook quality looks attractive with its ultra-tough aluminum alloy(military-grade) for the price point and is light weight and durable to withstand harsh environments and accidental drops.
Windows 10 was preinstalled and upon initial boot and with few questions like country and keyboard selection it asked to login to my Microsoft account and once done, it started downloading firmware and updating windows. With Wi-Fi 6(11AX) it
Charger/Ports: On the left side of the laptop, you have the HDMI port, 2 USB Type-C ports. You can also use any of the USB C ports to charge the laptop battery using a 65W power adapter. On the right side, one USB Type A port, MicroSD card reader, 3.5mm audio jack. Compared to previous gen, this notebook uses no proprietary cable for charging and uses USB- C easy charge for quick charge
Battery: It is advertised that include lithium-ion polymer battery will last up to 12 hours and in my testing, it was pretty close to 11 hours of video playback under minimal brightness without the need to charge or connect to power source. Very impressive.
Keyboard and Trackpad: Zenbook has a great full functionality keyboard with right amount of key travel during typing. Has dedicated hotkeys for instant access. Got a large Touchpad and is surprisingly good and has a tactile click when pressed.
Harmon Kardon sound speakers delivers good audio experience with loud sound and minimal distortion. Compared to other laptops at this price range, this delivers ultimate sound audio experience with the built-in speakers and microphone for the online meetings.
Camera/Face Login: Features an advanced IR front facing camera great for all video calls and online meetings. Also, face login is fast when using Windows Hello.
Performance: Comes with Windows installed, this notepad has Ryzen 5- 5500U AMD processor, GeForce MX450 NVIDIA graphics card, 256gb SSD storage, VRAM 2GB, RAM of 8GB LPDDR4X delivers good performance for this ultraportable form factor. No issues with browsing multiple tabs, playing online games, watching videos and no lag during testing.
Pros:
+Ultra Portable,
+Military grade durability,
+Great Battery life (approx. 9.8 - 10 hours);
+ Wi-Fi 6 for smooth video chats and large file transfer
+ Large Track Pad
+ Face Login
+ Harmon Kardon Audio
+ Dedicated hotkeys.
Cons:
-Not effective Keyboard backlight.
Bottomline: This is a great slim ultra-portable notepad with all the ports required for anyone to achieve excellent performance. High quality built, audio, display, screen size and battery life. If you are in the market for a notebook that delivers better performance and not looking for a gaming configuration and need a laptop for everyday use, then you will not be disappointed at the price point it offers.
Highly recommend for its performance, price and compact size over other brands in the market.

Stealth Gaming laptop

I got this laptop because I wanted something small and portable with good battery life. The other reviews cover most of the basics so im going to go in depth into gaming.
This has a Ryzen 5 5500u and a MX450(12W) variant. Last year had a 4500u and a mx350.
I wanted to use RPCS3 on last years model but the 6C6T on the 4500U was not enough for full speed. The 5500U 6C12T has been able to fullspeed everything on battery power even and I can get 3 hours off a full charge.
PC Gaming:
The MX350 of last year was equal to a 960M but the MX450 on this model is equal to a 1050. What does that mean in english? 720P gaming will be possible on all titles at 60fps. 1080P is also possible in some games with adjusted settings.
I played Yakuza 0 on this laptop off battery and I was getting a bit over 3 hours of playtime at 720P and 2 hours at 1080P. Both ran at 60fps with no problems.
Rust is the hardest game I have to run and while plugged in I got 80fps at 720P and 40-50fps at 1080p. I set this one at 720P to play. I tried gaming off battery but I was not able to get above 30FPS even at 720P. I investigated further as to why this was the case.
Off battery the mx450 will run at 12W but the cpu will not use more than 10W. and 22W of power is not enough to run this game at full speed. Once I was plugged in I saw that the MX450 was still running at 12W but my cpu was now running at 25W so at 37W of power it was able to run rust at full speed at 720P.
For non gaming tasks the cpu seems to run at 5w-10W and its still very fast and I get about 6-10 hours of battery life depending on what I am doing. There are also modern games that are trivial to this laptop like Octopath Traveler and Touhou luna nights and you can get 8 hours of battery life playing those.
This laptop has USBC-Easy charge which claims to be able to charge itself off any 5v-20V usb C source. However i havent been able to charge this off normal power banks even when the laptop is off or even 18W power delivery power banks. Asus was vague about what is accepted but my guess is that is a lie and the input must be 20V.

Favorite Laptop Ever (I know that's cheesy)

I cannot express how much I love this laptop. I got this because my Microsoft Surface 7 was sluggish and underpowered. I was able to get this as an open box for $550 (compared to my $900 surface) and have been so pleasantly surprised by it! My favorite laptop so far, it runs great, even on fairly demanding games like MC. It does run a little hot sometimes but on one of those fan risers from like OfficeMax or something its 10/10. Can't reccomend it enough!

Been a fantastic little laptop. Was using it for work for about 6 months. Now that I have a dedicated work machine I've been using it for light gaming when I'm out an about. Did end up updating the SSD to a 1tb model because 256 is just not enough for games. Don't expect high end performance out of it, but runs games like overwatch 2 just fine.

I was looking for a notebook that was both attractive and could withstand the occasional drop. The Asus Zenbook 14 is just such a device. It's smaller in footprint than my old unit yet has a wider screen that's both brighter and clearer regardless of the fact that both are 1080p resolution. What attracted me to it was the ability to upgrade the storage capacity by adding a MicroSDXC card of up to 1TB. That coupled with the inclusion of a full size USB and HDMI port rather than just USB-C (there's 2 of those as well) meaning I don't have worry about losing the adapters. The long battery life is impressive; they claim 12hrs, with normal usage, I squeezed about 9.5hrs. I could see how you might be able to reach the claimed number if you ran it on full battery saver mode with the backlit keyboard off. I love having a full width keyboard with semi-soft press buttons, my fingers are quite long and need the space. The backlighting doesn't offer just one or two settings, but 3 which is great because when I'm catching up with work in bed while it's pitch black, it's nice to not have the keyboard outshining the screen! This computer has 2 graphics processors, a Radeon processor embedded in the AMD Ryzen 5 chipset and a separate Nvidia GeForce MX450 which really enhances game play and refresh rates. Asus recommends plugging in the computer to make full use of the graphics processors. It has a quick boot up thanks to the 256GB SSD and the super quick face recognition. I clocked it at about a second quicker than my old pc. The only thing I don't much like is the way the screen opens and folds slightly under the base, it's a great feature to haveand props up the keyboard on a flat surface, however it pokes my legs quite a bit when on my lap.
A notebook pc is useful when the form factor provides both the necessary and the desired specs, but also follows through with claims. I am quite a bit more comfortable using this Asus Zenbook and may be a little more productive as a result.

This is an early review - hope it doesn't backfire later......
After setup, loading apps, doing updates, etc., I am very impressed with the performance, screen, and overall value for the price.
Screen is bright, no light bleed, good colors. The Ryzen processor gives snappy performance. And the 2Gb Mx450 video card can run basic to moderate games. The backlit keyboard has a nice feel, and the white back light through the dark keys makes for easy visibility for typing in low light. Trackpad feels good, and works well.
All is not perfect tho - would be nice to have a second slot to upgrade ram. And, would like to see less "bloatware" - including Asus apps.
Overall, I would recommend to most users for light gaming, surfing, email, photo editing, etc.

(Jeez, so many Insider reviews. I bought this with my own money.)
You don't see too many laptops at this price range with a discrete video card.
I like that this laptop has 2 USB-C ports. I can charge or transfer data to my phone while charging my laptop with only one power outlet.
I will be satisfied with this laptop for several years.
There is minor light bleed from the bottom bezel on the right side, but I only notice it during bootup when the screen is all black. No dead or bright pixels.
The display is set to turn off after 4 minutes. You probably want to adjust that setting.
(If you don't want to create a Microsoft account on startup, just don't connect to Wi-Fi when setting it up.)
The screws on the bottom are Torx 5. I suspect there are more screws under the rubber feet. I didn't want to void the warranty so soon after buying it just to see if the SSD was removable.
Other people complained the camera doesn't work well in low light. I also saw some dropped frames. It works fine in normal light. Sound is good.
I accidentally inserted a microSD card with the gold contacts facing down. You want to insert it with the contacts facing up. It pops out fine with a push.
My only minor complaint is that the travel charger prongs don't fold into the charger.
I always keep it plugged in so can't comment on battery life.
You can set the Battery Health to Balanced at 80% charge or Maximum lifespan at 60% charge with the MyASUS app under Customization. I set mine to Maximum lifespan.
It wants you to register, but you can skip the registration process.
Heat:
I use a cooling mat with fans to keep the laptop cool.
I mainly use this plugged into a USB-C docking station with 2 QHD monitors and an external keyboard and mouse. It displays the built-in LCD screen and both external monitors without a problem.
The laptop's fan noise without a cooling pad is manageable, but I don't play the latest AAA games at the highest quality, so I haven't stressed it. You can adjust the noise level with the Fan Profile setting in the MyASUS app, but then that would probably throttle the CPU performance.
The left half of the laptop gets uncomfortably hot on the bottom when I play games, but I don't put it on my lap while it is plugged into the docking station.
The vents are at the hinge, so the area above the keyboard gets uncomfortably hot. They blow air towards the LCD screen. If you open the lid all the way, the hinge raises the laptop a little for more ventilation.
It doesn't get very warm with just streaming videos and typing.
Keyboard and touchpad:
You press Fn+Esc to toggle what the function keys do. There is a light on the Fn key that turns on and off to show which mode you are in.
The touchpad is smooth like glass, but there are other brands with touchpads that are even smoother.
The keys are difficult to see in low light if they are not backlit, but are fine with even the lowest light setting in low light.

If you're looking for a midrange budget buy not much can beat this on sale! Decent performance and build quality for under $500 and even has backlit keys for use at night. My only real downside is that the screen doesn't get that bright and the fan noise can be a little intrusive at times.

UX425UG Q408UG ASUS Zenbook 14 Ryzen 5500U Late 2021 to 2022 Bestbuy model
The good: for the $400.00 for a sale priced Geek Squad item, not $719 new, it seems to be a reasonably powerful laptop. Not sure of material case is made from, but seems solid and not flimsy plastic-y. Build quality appears good so far and good ports, including 2 x USB C. Page up and down keys on the right. Wifi 6. Not sure of HDMI level or speed. The MX450 2GB video chip does not seem to get much love in various reviews, but better than not having it.
The bad: keyboard color, silvery is terrible and backlight keyboard is ineffective at many light levels. A black keyboard cover should help alleviate this, but they get bad reviews for this laptop and I have not purchased one. 8GB soldered in and non expandable RAM is terrible. But so far the laptop has worked ok. The 256GB M.2 is too small. To replace it would be a moderate pain. 3K speed is middle of the road. But cannot handle an SSD drive, a major weakness. Screen is not really that bright, but fine indoors. Sound on smaller laptops is never that good. Other reviews point out hinges becoming loose and how to fix them, but mine are ok so far. Battery life under realistic conditions is multiple hours, but not 6-9 hours. Back of laptop does get warm to hot quite often.
Please keep in mind this is not a 1K gamer laptop nor a Mac. Don't expect an OLED screen, Ryzen 7 chip, etc at this price point, small size and reasonable weight.
I got rid of W11 and slapped on a modified W10 without issue. Given the broken hinge on my 4 yr old HP has since been fixed (Was only an $80.00 repair and was original reason for getting this laptop) I was tempted not to keep the ASUS, but it has grown on me. The screen is also a bit better than the HP and the ASUS due to the faster M.2 is faster than the HP.
If you do not need a laptop now, might consider waiting until Black Friday (less than 4 months from date of this review).

Love this laptop!!! I purchased it to be able to work better in personal Excel sheets and to run some memory hog programs like the Adobe Creative Cloud suite (Photoshop, etc). This laptop handles having many applications open at once and, because i like to work in different places, it is lightweight and easy to travel with. I can also attest that is seems to be pretty hardy because it has survived a couple falls. I wouldn't test that though! I also love some of the features for personalization as I am very particular about how my deaktop is laid out and looks. I really am having trouble thinking of a con and its been a while since my purchase.

Great for on the go, lightweight and sleek design. Also liked the facial recognition security features. Falls short on dependability and reliability unfortunately, had problems with power button, wouldn't turn on or opposite and not shut down. Also the camera/ video quality disappointing. My old flip phone could take better pics so unfortunately never used for social media. That said, not a terrible buy but also not a solid one.

I've had this Asus Zenbook for about one month and really like it. I purchased it for $470 on Memorial Day and at that price point, this laptop is a steal.
The set-up was easy and there's been no problem with having multiple windows open at one time. If you catch it on sale, it's probably the fastest laptop you'll get for under $500.
For those users like me that don't want to sign into Microsoft to set everything up, I simply disconnected from the internet when it asked me to sign in and I was able to proceed to the next step with no problem.
Also, unlike some other reviewers, I haven't had any problems with the unit overheating or it being noisy. That may be due to the fact that I don't do any gaming on it. I always have it on my lap and so far, it stays cool to the touch. As others have noted, the individual keys can be too light in certain lighting conditions, but it hasn't been a dealbreaker for me.
I was also happy to see that my laptop does have a round audio jack port. Some reviews claim the new Zenbooks no longer have one, but this unit did.
Finally, one other thing I had to get used to was the location of the delete and power keys. On my old Samsung laptop, the power button was on a line of its own, with the delete key below it. Now, the delete key is adjacent to the power key. I haven't accidentally shut down the computer yet, but I find myself almost reaching for the power key to delete something. It's not a big deal, just something I have to get used to.
With Best Buy's 15-day return policy, it's definitely worth it to give this laptop a try, especially if you can get it for under $500. I'm glad that I did.

Fantastic laptop that won't slow down thanks to the 256GB SSD. For $700, I wish it carried 16GB of RAM instead of a single 8GB stick because Ryzen loves dual channel memory, and a lot of it. Also, the battery life is pretty bad, but it did last just long enough to make it through my 5 hour days. Overall, this laptop is great for any college/university student because it's speedy and powerful.

Laptop was great, was a perfect upgrade to what I previously had. Only really used it lightly for about 2 weeks, when I got a BSOD and then ended up in a BIOS purgatory. I have warranty but they want charge me just to look at it. Unfortunate because the Laptop, as previously stated was great. Mine has been sitting in a dresser wasting away.
few things:
This particular model apparently is Best Buy exclusive. Don't know if that a plus or a negative, so do what you will with that info.
Cannot upgrade RAM, its soldered
The price I purchased this one at the time was a good deal, now, I would get something better, mainly because non upgradable RAM, and OLED screens are amazing.
