    Perfect combination of features

I had a surface 3 that just wasn't cutting it as far as screen size and charge issues, so I ended up making this semi-impulse buy. I found a 14" version in Germany that I thought was the perfect size but I wanted a USA version and they don't distribute the 14" model here! So the 15" was my only option. It fits perfectly in my travel bag and I enjoy having the screen space. I AM HAPPY! Let's take a look at what I've experienced in my 3 or so weeks of owning this: I work on the road all over the world for half of the month and I'm using this to have a legitimately powerful, large screened display while at work. 1) The Screenpad - An extra screen IN your touch pad is just ingenious. Gimmicky? Maybe a little, but I do find myself using it pretty frequently for various quick tasks at work and while doing hobby projects (mostly the calculator). When simply listening to music (Harman Kardon speakers on this are great!), I installed an old version of WinAmp and the visualizations can be slung down to the touchpad in extension display mode. (See the photo) I thoroughly enjoy it... it looks super cool! On initial install The screenpad gave me a little bit of grief where the start bar would flicker wildly but a remove and reinstall of the screen pad software cured that. It took me a minute to figure out how to display a custom background on the Screenpad, but then discovered that right clicking a photo provides a "Set as Screenpad background" option. Then Fn+F6 will toggle you over to the proper mode to see the image. 2) Other non gimmicky hardware - I wanted something with 1TB SSD but found it to be prohibitively expensive. 512GB is just fine and with the MicroSD card slot, you can give yourself a little bump in space right there. I'm skeptical about using microSD for permanent storage since I've had 2 128GB cards go bad from over use (I regularly swap entire cards of contents back and forth to my desktop computer at home which isn't good for them). I'd stick with the MicroSD as a permanent backup location than a working folder. Transfer speeds over the USB-C ports to my USB 3.0 external hard drive make that another great storage overflow location. The i7 processor is more power than I've ever owned so it suits my needs an then some! I've been using it for 3D Printer modeling on a web interface, and my only restriction to performance is the speed of the hotel routers. 3) Let's look at some of the things other people have criticized: The fan noise: On occasion the fan kicks on.. Right now I'm running Edge browser with 6 tabs open, Google Chrome with one tab open, windows Sticky Notes, a Steam game login prompt. If the fan is on, I can't hear it. Yes, when it does kick on it'll make some noise, but I find that usually happens when I fire up a power hungry game. And usually when I do that I have headphones on and couldn't care less about the fan. The intake and exhaust for the fan are actually in the hinge area between the screen and the base. There are no openings besides the hinge gap on the bottom of the laptop... that being said, if you put the laptop on a bed and plug that slot it'll get very warm. Not good for your battery. Best use a lap desk if you're playing games while laying in bed. 4) Battery life - You HAVE to trade something for processor power, graphics performance, an awesome flashy touchpad, and a terrifically slim frame. That tradeoff is battery life. This thing brand new will last about 2 hours or less on battery with Battery Health Charging on (this ASUS program allows you to limit the charging to 80% to prolong battery longevity). The battery basically gets you through until you can find another outlet. But to me it is worth the trade-off. It's not like any other Lithium Battery is going to last longer... It's what they could fit into this slim frame with all the other bells and whistles. 90% of the time I'm using it plugged in anyway. Which leads me to mention the only thing I didn't really consider when upgrading from my surface to this... The size of the power brick. It literally is almost the same size as an actual brick, but about half as high. So, it takes up a little bit more bag space but, once again, worth it for the performance. How else are you going to get 19.5v at 7.7 Amps to this powerhouse? The keyboard on this is the perfect size for me. Arrow keys are just the right size and placement. Dedicated Page Up/Dn Home and End keys are nice to have, backlighting is a must for me, and the ability to lock the function keys in either hotkey or function key mode is really nice. There are only 2 things about the keyboard that I find could use refining. The Power button is actually a keyboard key RIGHT next to delete. After suspending your computer while deleting something a couple of times, you learn to use caution with what you press. The other thing that maybe I just haven't figured out yet is how to have the key backlight stay on by default. I find myself having to hunt down the illumination key in the dark half of the time because the backlight has gone off after a power cycle. While I'm pointing out negatives I'll throw in one last one... The sticker they put next to the Screenpad is not something I chose to leave on my device.. It looks like something you're meant to remove, but when you peal it, it doesn't re-stick again. The adhesive did NOT want to come off. It left a nasty circle of adhesive when removed, and required a lot of tedious rubbing to remove it all. Not cool. I thought I was going to wreck the finish removing the sticky mess but the brushed metal stood up to the abuse, and looks beautiful. The space is now adorned with Snoopy the flying ace saying "Here's to you" with a Rootbeer! Fitting... and much better. I almost didn't buy this laptop because I figured if I'm going to spend this much on a powerful laptop, I'll just pour in the little bit extra to get EXACTLY what I want with customizations. I was wrong though. I bounced from site to site trying to come up with the perfect combination... Dedicated NVIDIA graphics, Core i7, 16GB RAM, quality reputation... and funny enough I wanted to stick to a 1920x1080 because frankly, I don't notice the difference with 4K resolution. I thought why pay for the capability, and sacrifice processing that many pixels when our eyes can't see the difference. But I couldn't get that combination. So I was forced into getting this 4K screen which is listed as NON-Touchscreen. A bummer that I was willing to accept. After all, it isn't a tablet. But guess what... IT IS A TOUCHSCREEN. Best Buy has it mismarked. On top of that, I have my old surface pen, which, when placed on the screen throws up the pen dot. It writes!!! So no need to buy the ASUS one. I hardly ever use it, but it's there if I need it. Side note: The pen doesn't work with the screenpad. As far as the dedicated graphics go: My liquid cooled DUAL GTX570 SLI desktop runs games at a lower framerate than this thing. I am an old timer when it comes to games. I really don't play much at all but the minimal comparisons I did had this laptop outperforming my liquid cooled triple monitor desktop display setup. Impressive. Last thing: I got the Logitech Anywhere 2S bundled for like $40 when I bought this laptop and I highly recommend it! I used to need the little Unifying USB plug in my surface because all my Bluetooth mice were huge, and the smaller mice I use for travelling all had the little receiver. This one works instantly with Bluetooth once you pair it up. No delay on startup or anything. It's compact, and charges from microUSB. No spare batteries needed. Not sure if the good Bluetooth connection is due to advancements in Bluetooth, the mouse, the laptop's Bluetooth chipset or windows improvements but it works way better than any prior Bluetooth mice I've used, and a good bundle price. Thanks for reading! Hope this helps someone.

Good, awesome for video editing and graphics... great for gaming... Cool features such as the touch pad screen 1080P functions as calculator, display and other apps Bad. all the junk software that Asus loaded it with, I had to remove almost 10 apps that are not good and potential security risk

From a hardware perspective this laptop is super fast and an excellent performance machine in a light very portable package. From a software perspective, more specifically ASUS software, a zero. A windows update that downloaded and installed the first time I booted the machine broke the Screenpad software. Doing a factory reset resulted in further headaches as NONE of the ASUS software would reinstall. I suspect a corrupted restore partition. ASUS was no help whatsoever. In fact, clueless would be a more accurate way to describe ASUS support. I ended up blowing away all partitions on the entire drive, installing a fresh copy of Windows, and figuring out which drivers / software needed to be loaded to get the screen pad working. Since then, another windows update broke the screen pad software again (it's a display driver related issue). All I needed to do was to reinstall the screen pad software again. Bottom line, when everything is working properly, it is a great machine and overall I'm happy with it. That being said, with the lack of and quality of ASUS support, I'll never buy another ASUS product again out of principle more than anything. My opinion of the company, based on my experience, is they absolutely do not care about properly supporting their products. Period. I must say, Best Buy was wonderful and bears no fault in my issues getting support.

I found this laptop in the open box area when looking for an i7 laptop. I was able to purchase this laptop for just over $1000 which was a phenomenal deal. I do mainly photography editing when on vacation and remote into the office with it. The 4K display is nice while it comes with a slightly stronger 8750H 6 core processor than others that I was looking at. The 16 GB Ram and 500 GB SSD are OK. The extra screen and functionality is OK. Kinda neat when working with office apps like Excel. I have come no where near to the 9.5 hour battery life using the laptop under normal operating conditions. The speakers are OK. I was disappointed that the internal webcam is so poor. You cannot do windows hello with it. The trackpad is somewhat lacking in response, but I use a mouse more often that not so not a major issue. I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro on the system.

Good monitor but many other issues with it

    Posted .

After owning and using this device daily, for a while now, I will give my honest opinion. I will start with the good stuff: 1. The monitor is extremely good (4K), very bright with excellent colors. Also, there are many levels of adjustable monitor brightness 2. The keyboard is actually very comfortable (personal preference) 3. SATA drive is good 4. Good build quality 5. Fan sound is very acceptable 6. 16GB of RAM is enough, at least for me The bad things now: 1. The laptop has a coil whine sound. Unfortunately, it appeared after the return policy of BestBuy otherwise I would have returned it. And there is no way to fix this issue!!! 2. The bezels of the monitor could have been smaller for 2018/2019 laptop 3. I think that even the i7 model would deserve a PCIe drive and a 1050Ti GPU (minimum) 4. Battery life is just low/average with normal use 5. The trackpad is very functional but sometimes the scrolling function stops and the only way to fix it is to restart the device 6. Sound is not very good because of the position they are located I assume 7. After shutting down the laptop you have to adjust the keyboard’s lighting every time you start Windows again 8. Somehow, there is no way to prevent the wireless mouse from waking up the laptop, even after adjusting the settings. The same wireless mouse works fine on another laptop…… 9. I am sure the next one could be a Windows problem, but I have never experienced something like that on another device. The top or bottom part of applications like Word or Chrome suddenly they become black and not visible and the only way to fix this is again to restart the device. The last issue has also to do with Geek Squad so if you don’t want to read it just skip this part 10. One day while I was working the laptop shut down on its one and it would not turn on. That happened while the device was plugged into the power supply. There was no light indicator on, and the laptop had no life. I immediately called ASUS and after they guided me to perform a hard reset on the laptop but that did not fix the issue. They advised me to bring it to BestBuy so they can ship it and repair it. The Geek Squad member told me that it will take UP to 15 days (for me this is absolutely unacceptable for 2019 but there was not another option). Long story short, they returned the laptop to me after ONE month and they said that it was the battery. They also claimed two things, first that the battery was not in stock which it was according to the phone call from the lady at the repair facility and the online status repair system. Second, they said that usually it takes that long for a repair like this, and they usually are faster than going through ASUS directly. Now if ASUS wants to have a partnership with BestBuy and their customers receive that kind of service maybe they have to rethink it. Overall, I would not recommend BestBuy as a buying from option after that repair incident anyways. I have owned monitors, phones, motherboards and other devices from ASUS but I don’t think I will go with another laptop from them especially with that bad customer support As far as ASUS goes you can find a better device equally powerful with less money.

    Excellent laptop

    |
    Posted .

The short story is that this laptop is a portable desktop - fast, large enough display to work well as a touch screen, and the first built-in mouse pad that actually works well for me. The display is bright and clear and the sound is full. There is enough SSD storage, especially with a decent sized micro SD card added, to hold all my software and data. This laptop is the opposite of flimsy, built to last. The salesperson, Ty, who recommended it, was knowledgable. He said that this is the laptop I would want after discussing what my needs are, and suggested looking on line because he wasn't sure they had it in stock. It turned out that he found one brand new, sealed, but to me that is honesty. He could have just steered me to another model they had on display and ready at hand, but instead said that tnhis particular model, whether they carried it or not, was the right one. When he couldn't find one ready at hand, he searched through there laptop storage bins high on the wall and finally found one. That is service! The one potential negative for some would be battery life, which seems to be approximately 4 - 6 hours. For my use, this doesn't matter, since I am always close to an outlet.

A Worthy Replacement For My UX501

    Posted .

I got a lot of miles out of my first Zenbook Pro. Literally. I probably put 300k+ air miles on it, hauling it around on weekly business trips in a sturdy laptop bag with my tools. I had no complaints. It was a reliable and durable travel companion that never let me down until very recently, when I wore-out the M, C, V, X, apostrophe and period keys on the keyboard. I knew it was only a matter of time considering I spend up to six hours of my workday composing reports and developing learning materials. And then there's the gaming. I do a little of that too. Not much but, it's a pleasant distraction after a long day and having a laptop that could stand-up to both uses and not stand-out in the same ostentatious way that most gaming laptops do were important considerations for work. The Zenbook Pro looks totally professional and I'm never self-conscious about taking out in front of a client. Asus laptops have always blown me away with their graphic performance and the UX580GD does not disappoint. It has one of the best 4k displays I've ever seen and streaming 4k content is nothing less than breathtaking. It's really what sets Asus apart and the reason that I, personally, have stuck with Asus thru the years. I'm spoiled. I know their quirks and shortcomings. I know going-in that any device as thin, lightweight and packing this much horsepower is going to make some audible fan noise when you try to game on it but, I do not find it as unbearably loud and obnoxious as other reviewers have reported. I run World Of Tanks on Medium graphics and consistently get 55-60fps with only minimal fan noise and moderate heat build-up. Compared to my UX501 (which still works fine, I just didn't want to spend $500 to replace the keyboard) the UX580GD is significantly cooler and quieter using the same graphic settings and resolution as a basis for comparison. I'm not sure what other users were expecting but, I think it's a real improvement over my previous Zenbook. Although I'm still trying to figure-out how and when I'm going to use it, the screenpad is an interesting feature that I hope Asus will develop further. It's what really makes this laptop unique, yet, it wasn't a big selling-point for me. I just wanted another Zenbook Pro and this one really satisfies. If you're an Asus fan, the UX580GD is a great choice, especially if you're upgrading from a previous generation. I consider it a logical progression of the Zenbook Pro line. If you're new to Asus or had less-than-stellar previous experience with an Asus-product, I don't know if it'll win you over completely but for now, this owner is beyond impressed.

the wife was looking for core i7 16GB. tried a Dell for about 2 days, its wifi degraded itself to a speed of 9GB/sec with win 10 upgrades, and sifting thru it supposedly helpful support website was hopeless. Thus we tried this with a good deal of skepticism, in particular the touchpad that was a display. Well, that turns out to be a useful feature in and of itself without the asus extra bells and whistles. I always have multiple displays so I can do one thing while referencing another. So, now that is in a single package, readable with old eyes. Adding the usual extra two displays, and the forty or more tabs the wife has in play on multiple browsers, it runs flawlessly without any hesitations. We had perused all brands, and always keep an eye on the open boxes, which really made this an exceptional purchase. With what we learned about its functionality and features, it would be a better value than similar I7's from other manufacturers. In talking with the blue shirts, it seems that almost all the competition in this category suffer from wifi related issues. So, I waited thru a couple of updates and significant use before filing this review.

This is the third laptop of the same model that I bought. The mix of speed, great display (4K), touchscreen and the big 500mb SSD with an additional 2 GB HD for less than 1300 USD makes this laptop one of the best deals. You can play games, edit videos, watch UHD movies and enjoy fast response while doing regular work with the same laptop. This is an ALL-Terrain LAPTOP! (except for working in a rugged environment, everything else is true)

I cannot even think of what to say first about this laptop. It is simply amazing! Speed is amazing, ease of use is great, look is nice, and the added screen on the keyboard is actually pretty handy! I run a small bookkeeping and tax business and find myself running a minimum of 8 programs at any given time and the computer never shows signs of running a number of programs at one time. I did a ton of homework before purchasing this laptop to fun my new business and the staff at Best Buy also had numerous good things to say about it as well. Can't recommend this computer enough!!!!

    Very nice laptop

This laptop is quality built with a metal clam shell. Very durable and rugged while looking good at the same time. Super fast Intel Core i7 with very fast specs on memory with dual graphics. Intel 630 and a Nvidia 1050ti. The screen pad is awesome with super Harman Kardon sound. This is truly hard to beat at this price. Asus customer care is awesome.

Light weight, excellent display, and fastest-booting laptop ever! (8 seconds) however, the touchpad is too complicated to be useful and even gets in the way of my usual gestures. I returned it, reluctantly, due to the touchpad issues. But it was quite a good deal at $1200.

I bought my zenbook pro a little while ago. Has a good battery life, its light and it has everything except no face recognition. And camera quality is a little poor.

    Great Setup can be glitchy

Great bang for your buck hardware. Screenpad is nice but can be glitchy. I've done multiple full format and reinstalls and they still persist. Recently ASUS released a good amount of driver updates seems to be better.
