    It's a great laptop. Word of advice, enter the laptop to go to the Asus website to update the bios and also AMD website to update the hard drive and it will be running smoothly

    I just received this laptop as a warranty replacement from Asus and I want to add some commentary about this wonderful laptop. I have read so many reviews stating heat is a problem, but I think those reviews are old and not really reflective of the Zenbook S16 as of December 2024. So here is my honest review. TLDR version: Great device if you tweak it. Basically, I had seen a lot of posts about how the ZenBook S16 is great except it overheats. I believe I found the culprit and it really is software driven. This laptop has so much good going for it (if you can get it on sale) such as a great screen, good keyboard, great sound, good performance, good ports for thin and light, etc. What holds it back is software related and mostly due to the HX processors being new and Windows 24H2 not being the best version of Windows. Every review I saw prior states heat is the biggest problem and there are fixes that anyone can apply. First, update the BIOS to latest version (312 as of this review). Seems like the older BIOS versions had problems and this version helped correct. Second, in power plan profiles, lower the minimum processor percentage to 0% from 5%. Lowering this will let processor be calm during idle and improve battery life. Third, and most importantly, disable the CPU Boost. What ends up happening in Windows keeps trying to randomly boost the CPU clock and that causes the spikes everyone talks about. (This problem also affect Intel chips as Windows tries to boost the processor when it doesn't need to) By disabling this, the processor stays level and you don't lose much performance (especially for the average user). There are a few ways to do this, but I found the easiest is to use GHelper (also works on other Asus laptops). With my tweaks (and removal of Asus bloat - dsiabled some Asus services with GHelper) this ZenBook will run in the low to mid 30 degree range when watching a movie on battery and mid 40s to low 50s when plugged into a dock for work. Overall, I just have to say this laptop is great once the software has been tweaked. Battery life is great as I was drawing 5W total watching movies on battery.

    I purchased this laptop wanting to like it but was quickly disappointed. It has great specs and numbers, has the perfect types and amounts of ports, but like many others have mentioned, it seems to have terrible thermal/power management. On top of this if you want to run Linux there are a lot of things that do not work. Pros: - Beautiful design - Thin and lightweight - Good port combination - Great screen - Good keyboard - Large touchpad Cons: - It has as a touchscreen - IMO this should be an option. It adds to the cost, weight, and thickness of the machine and not a lot of people use it. - Poor thermal/power management - gets hot with worse battery life than expected. - Poor BIOS options for thermal management, peripheral management, keyboard backlight controls, etc. - Keyboard backlight fades on/off with no way to override it in the BIOS or even with the keyboard backlight controls unless you have Asus software installed. So if you run Linux it will just do this forever. - Poor Linux support - (on Ubuntu with kernel 6.8.0) Speakers don't work, Bluetooth doesn't work, power management is even worse than windows and it doesn't sleep/hibernate properly.

    Absolutely Terrible

    If you’re reading this review, search for a different computer. I purchased this in November. Since then, it had a few restarts out of nowhere but just today I got the dreaded blue screen. There was nothing I could do to save it. It is now basically a paperweight. I called Asus Support and they walked me through all of the fixes and none of them worked. I could not even do a factory reset. I asked if I could get my money back, the answer was no. I have to send it back and wait 7 to 10 business days for them to repair it and mail it back to me. Well, my computer is my livelihood so I have to buy a new computer while I wait for this paperweight to be repaired. I also don’t trust that it won’t happen again after being “repaired”. I can’t risk it. I’m going back to Dell or HP which have always been workhorses for me. Stay away from this one!
