Like many other reviewers, I, too, had bought the previous version of this shelf unit. For the most part, they are built the same with a few improvements made; at least from what I remember when I built my original units. However, there are two major gripes that I do have with it, more on that later. This is a great unit and durable when adequate care is taken during the assembly process. I'd give it a 4.5 if it weren't for the 2 issues. . . The PROs: • The instructions are clear and easy to follow. There are pictures as well as written-out instructions, unlike IKEA. • You really only need a screwdriver and hammer. • The small parts (screws, pegs, nails, etc.) are separated and identified well in a blister-type pack. • The backing of the unit is much improved from the previous version. To me, it seems just a bit thicker and more durable than the older version. I can't quite remember if they had these or not, but the current version has pilot holes for the small nails that you need to hammer into the frame. This saves a lot of guess work and you can center the backing a lot easier. It also has a tongue and groove type seam between the top and bottom halves that you nail down. This is an improvement from the older version that just joined flat next to each other and had to be taped together. • The wall mount/anchor is standard. Comes with metal L-brackets mount, screws and plastic drywall anchors. However, unlike the original version, they've added pilots holes for the screws that go into the top of the unit. Again, only needing a screwdriver. I remember struggling when I had to anchor the first two units I bought. • The design is simple and contemporary with a strong dark brown, almost black finish. . . The CONs: • The screws that secure the base to rest of the frame do not screw in flush with the wood. There will be little nubs sticking out at the bottom of your unit. This can cause instability issues and may mess up your floors when staging or moving the unit. • My biggest disappointment with these are that the shelves are not flush with the frame. Unlike the previous version, these shelves are slightly receded. When you first install them, they seem pretty flimsy and easy to unbalance/tip over. Once items are placed on them, the weight keeps it pretty steady. However, this leaves you with less surface area to work with if you have unusually sized media or wanted to add little tchotchkes/trinkets where, again, balance may become an issue. . . ASSEMBLY TIPS: • There aren't many parts to this assembly. I'd recommend laying everything out in the order they need to be assembled. This will help you better visualize the bigger picture of how everything will fit together. Do not rush through the steps as you don't want to mess up the placement or over tighten anything. • Personally, the holes that hold the wooden dowels/pegs seemed too big and the pegs moved around too much for my liking. I added just a dab of wood glue in each hole to help with the overall sturdiness. Add when you first put them into the I-piece and J-piece. Then again on the opposite sides when joining with the vertical frames (A-H-pieces / jambs?), • Lastly, the much talked about and "dreaded" step of adding the backing. The base of the unit has a lip the protrudes out from the rest of the frame. The instructions tell you to place the unit face down and just hammer the back down. The unevenness causes too much strain on the screws securing the base to the rest of the unit and may crack. Here is the very simple workaround I used for this: 1. Very carefully flip the unit face down. 2. Place 9 of the mini shelves under each corner at the top of the unit and another 9 shelves in the center along one of the sides of the unit (under the I/J-piece - I forget which is the center plank) where the top and bottom halves are held together. Each stack should roughly equate to the height of the lip at the base and will now give you a balanced and steady work area to nail down the backing. To protect the top surfaces of the shelves, make sure that the bottoms (the side with the divots drilled out for the pegs) are facing out in each of these stacks. 3. Unfold and center the backing pieces as desired, then start hammering down all those little nails. Again, the pilot holes here are such time-savers. I recommend first working on the side that has the extra 9 shelves in the center of the unit. When done, you can slide those out and place them under the opposite side and finish out the hammering. • As for those pesky protruding screws under the base, I simply used 2 pieces of painter's (masking) tape to cover each one up. This should help it glide a bit better when staging/moving the unit without gouging into your floors. You can add anything you think could help in this area so long as it doesn't add too much thickness. • When all done, you are now able to gently lift the unit upright and place it where desired.

    Poor Quality

I bought 5 of these cases several years ago and was exceedingly pleased with them. I recently purchase two more and I am exceeding displeased as changes have been made to the product that have significantly reduced the quality. The adjustable shelves are not as deep as the stationary shelf therefore the dvd cases overhang the shelf by about 1/2 inch. In addition, the adjustable shelves are not as thick as they were on the older model and therefore more likely to warp under the weight of the dvds. The most significant difference is that the cams used in the assembly hardware are very lightweight and cheap. Several of the cams would not lock and I ended up having to use nails to secure the top to the unit. They also strip out very easily when you attempt to tighten them. It is amazing that Atlantic managed to ruin a very satisfactory product by making minor cost saving changes to it and they are marketing it as the same product and charging even more for it than I paid for the original 5 that I bought several years ago. When you are reading reviews for this product, please note when the review was written. Older cases got very good reviews but the newer cases are not worth buying. I will be returning my second one to Best Buy for a refund.

    Does What It Needs To

Nice looking product, however the build of the product (fit, quality of screws, pegs, etc.) is slightly flimsy. Required a little building finesse in-order to make everything fit the way it should, definitely not a "follow the instructions & get perfect results" product. But, other than that, definitely a nice storage cabinet for someone who owns many films (many meaning 400+). The wall mounts are solid & definitely a bonus (why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 3), definitely necessary to lock the cabinet securely to the wall. Has a nice, dark espresso finish. Shelves are solid, as are the metal pegs used to hold them in place. All in all, a decent storage cabinet for someone with a serious collection looking to not break the bank. Does what it needs to, bottom line.

This is a nice unit IF you take care in assembling it. You must remember it is low cost for a reason - it is made of cheap pressed wood. Extra care is needed in assembly. The directions are easy to follow and things seem to fit all right BUT when you get to the final step (#8) and need to nail the back panels on, DO NOT flip the assembly over onto the front as the instructions state. The weight of the unit and the fact that it won't be lying flat due to the extra size of the bottom panel will rip the four screw pins from the cheap pressed board of panels C, G, H, and D. Instead, flip the unit onto it's side and nail the back panels on from there. I had to glue the plastic inserts back in due to the fact that they were ripped from their holes. Once assembled the unit should provide plenty of storage space.

The best thing about this shelf is that it stores an incredible number of media items. The low points: The instructions are hard to follow and that made it hard to assemble. The wood (particle board or MDF) is just under 1/2 inch thick so this isn't the most durable product. The shelf backing is made out of cardboard and the instructions want you to use little 1/2 inch nails to attach the back to the cabinet and that means you will most likely have very sore fingers. It is very easy to overtighten the screws (which could ruin the shelf). The instructions show using wood dowels to connect sections together but there isn't any mention of using glue (or glue provided). The shelves are particle board and the finish is easy to chip. The the shelf pin holes are inconsistently sized so the shelf pins can fall out when trying to set the shelves in place. I don't think this shelf is going to hold up if I have to move it - its extremely flimsy.

    Great DVD Book Case

We were specifically looking for a bookcase type DVD storage unit. I did a google search and of course being an Elite Service Member at Best Buy always like to go there when I can. In this instance, Best Buy had the best deal and even though i only saw this online it was even better in person. It was relatively easy to set up except for one point when i had to rest the thing on it's front - the unit has a "lip" on the bottom and resting it on the front cause the unit to separate a little but in the end i hope it's not a long term problem. The unit is big, holds an incredible amount of DVDs and is almost perfectly deep for DVD and not too deep like a standard bookcase. My only 2 issues with the unit are one mentioned above during the build and that in general the unit is not super robust, but for the price it's fine and as i said, hopefully will hold up for years - we plan on keeping it in the same place and not moving it around.

I already have 13 of these units and will be buying 3 more very soon. Of the 13 that I have bought over a 4year period I have never had a problem with the packaging, nothing broken or missing. The instructions for assembly are very clear and easy to understand, all the parts bits and pieces are marked and easily identifiable, follow the instructions and you can have a unit assembled in an hour or less. These units are very well made, once you have assembled it you will have a fine looking piece of furniture that is very durable and worth the money paid.. The fixed shelf is placed perfectly for DVD placement I have 4 rows below and 4 rows above the fixed shelf and they look evenly spaced..

I had a traditional 5 shelf bookcase that I used for my dvds and blurays but soon found that I had too many. The spacing didn't allow me to add another shelf and I had to stack movies on it and it looked terrible. I finally found this media case and decided to buy it. I am so glad I did! It is only slightly wider than my previous bookcase and the shelves are adjustable, I have extra Im not using. My stacks of movies are no more, they all fit on this case perfectly and I even have space. The case itself is made of cheap boards not wood but it does what its designed to do. Only thing is the mahogany color seems to look black in color rather than darker brown. Took an hour or so to assemble it, didn't need to mount it to the wall as the base is pretty stable.

Previously purchased 3 of these media shelves a few years ago (under the original manufacture's name). The latest version is still a solid product, but there are noticeable changes in the build quality of the product. The shelves are thinner and not as deep as they used to be (they are not as deep as the shelf 'walls' so your media sits in a bit). I preferred the older, thicker full sides product, but this is still by far the best of the larger shelving units offered by BB -- and even after several years they match my original purchases. Would be a 4 1/2 star review if that was an option, but I understand trying to save money from a manufacturer and will still give 5 stars.

I really like these. I have several. I bought most of them several yrs ago and then decided to add this one to a new wall. I was happy I could at least find the same model. Color, hardware = same. But, shelves have slightly less depth and are not as thick as original units. Still functional and probably wouldn't have had much "concern" if it weren't for knowing the previous revision was a little more stout. Anyway, I actually flip these upside down and install them against the wall and to the ceiling. Then, made some nice cleats and trimmed them out. We put many of the movies face forward so it looks like mini movie posters. They look beautiful and really make the media room impressive.

I bought two units. The first one had a cam lock connector that would not lock properly. I had to take it apart to fix it. The second one had the same problem but I could not fix it because the cam lock broke in half (it was made of a cheap grade of cast aluminum.) I returned it to Best Buy and bought another. I assembled the third one, but it was so unstable it would not stand up. I bought some steel L-brackets to reinforce the corners. I also had to strenghten the base with some self drilling screws. One of the side panels was cut about 1/4 inch smaller than the other side. In all three units the shelves are not fully adjustable because the manufacturer did not drill enough shelf pin holes.

I have a very large DVD collection and was very happy to get this case for my birthday. I was pretty sure I would fill once I gathered the jewel cases from various old storage areas and combined them here but it is barely half full now! The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that the pins that go into the holes and hold up the shelves are not placed snugly enough into those holes. When one falls out the shelf tilts and spills the contents. This happened a couple of times during loading. Once the shelf is full of DVDs then it seems to be very stable. I just wish the pins were not so loose to start with. They should fit snugly.

I bought a small cute cd/dvd shelf to put my small collection in. I was amazed how many more of those shelves I would need. I did research and found this...I could use another but I need a bigger house first. Go big then bigger...you have many more than you think. The directions were eh...but rely more on the pictures and do it right. Not the strongest material but it is better than what it costs. It is tall and wide but sticks close to the wall. Measure You don't want to try to get this back into a box.

This is a great shelf to hold a lot of CDs, DVDs, or BRs. The assembly was safe and easy to do alone, but it took several hours. Just make sure you have a large area to assemble it in! The shelf is deceptively light once you finish putting it together, and it's a lot easier to move around than it was when it was still in the box. If you're alone, though, I'd still recommend assembling it in the room you plan to keep it, since it's a little awkward to move too far on your own.

I bought two units because it looked so good on line! Building it was easy but the instructions said to turn the unit over to attach the back Panel. As soon as I did, the top and bottom attachment hardware pulled out of the composite material due to the different dimensions (2.5 approx.) between the top and bottom panels and the flex caused by the difference. Not repairable after that. Sorry but, better materials are necessary. You happily refunded my money. Thanks for the good and cheerful refund service.

For the amount of storage you get for the price, you can't go wrong! It was easy to assemble, easy to mount to the wall, and looks great! And as far as the company, I had an issue that I was missing 1 piece - a little shelf holder. I contacted Atlantic and had the parts I needed within a day or two AT MOST. That kind of service is hard to find. I will DEFINITELY be purchasing more products from this company in the future!

I ordered this shelf and it arrived promptly. I couldn't wait to put it together, so I started right away. The instructions could be a little more clearly written, but it wasn't hard to figure out. I was a little concerned about the stability of this unit after reading some other reviews, but upon completing assembly, I knew I had nothing to worry about. I did get my brother-in-law to help me stand it up and put it place. The shelf is very sturdy. I have no complaints and will be trying to fill this one up for a while.

I purchased this media cabinet under the assumption that it was going to look exactly like the ones that I had purchased several years earlier. Much to my dismay it wasn't. Not only was it built rather cheaply, the shelves did not extend to the end of the cabinet like the older version. I also had some serious problems with screw holes not matching and the cardboard backing wouldn't line up correctly. Thank goodness this is the last one I will have to purchase since I ran out of room on my wall.

Overall, the storage unit is very good. The assmebly, particularly putting on the backing, is quite awkwardwith the base plate attached. One side of the attachment screws pulled completely out while trying to put on the backing. I was able to fix it but had to set the unit on its side (instead of on its face as the directions specified) in order to finish attaching the backing.

The design is great but it is so cheaply made. The metal supports fall out of the holes and the boards cracked a bit putting it together. Once together it seems fine. The one we originally bought about 10 years ago was made a lot better. The shelves came out to the edges and it was just more solid. This is really the only thing out there for this size. It holds a good number of DVDs, I do not have it anchored and it stands against the wall very stable.
