    Too spotty

The August WiFi Smart Lock is simple to install and works for the most part. I’ve had really spotty issues with some of it’s smart features since I have had it though. These may be things that can get ironed out over time through software patches or they just randomly start working like they have for me. To install the lock you must download the app to a smart device and there you get step by step directions, with pictures. It really is as simple as removing two screws, putting the right adapter on the lock, putting the screws back in and attaching the lock. To use the door sense feature you have a hidden option, which requires some wood work, or the external sensor, which is like that of post install security systems. Then continuing the directions you add the lock through BlueTooth to your device and can connect it to 2.4 Ghz WiFi from there. Upon initial setup, everything seemed to work. I received notifications and using the app I could lock/unlock the door and see if it is opened or closed. Additional features in the app allow for setup of auto lock and unlock and various notifications like if the door is opened manually, left ajar, unlocked by a specific user or auto-locked. Also, some features may not be visible unless you are connected to the device via BlueTooth at that time, like calibrate and factory reset. The auto lock feature works every time the door is shut, if it is not shut completely it will still attempt to lock, but give an audible alert if it fails. The auto unlock feature is supposed to react by geofencing after returning from greater than 200ft from the location that you set. However, it has only worked after I manually unlocked, walked inside, then auto-locked the door, for it to then unlock itself and properly once when I returned from a long overnight trip. When using the app, I have had it not respond on WiFi and only unlock if close enough to get a BlueTooth signal. This is with the WiFi router in the same room as the lock. Notifications have been hit or miss. Might get them within seconds of the door being unlocked, or never. On my overnight trip, my door was manually unlocked twice and never received any notifications. Then, when checking the log it took several hours before it showed up, the screenshot attached. So, wouldn’t rely on this as a security notification device. This also works with voice devices, like Alexa and Google. However, with my Google Home it did not work completely at first. It would lock and give status, but for unlock it asks for a PIN. The PIN is set through the app, but spoken out loud for the speaker. For example I would set 1234 and when asked to unlock, Google would ask for the PIN, but then return an answer like “123 4th street is 2.3 miles from your current location.” After a day or so, I tried again and it works as intended. Albeit a bit slow at times, it has worked now, hands free. So, in the end, this isn’t a bad device. Maybe someone with an iPhone will have better success than myself with a Samsung Note 10+. I just don’t like how spotty its smart features have been and due to that the added delay of getting into my house.

Lock setup was very easy. App integration was even easier and worked as it should. Just felt I needed the change the batteries more often than I should. Otherwise a solid lock to use to get in your home without keys.

Doesn't extend deadbolt all the way

I must admin, I’m an IT guy by career and unlike most seasoned pros, I do enjoy IoT and Smart Devices in my home. Over the past few months, I’ve looked at Smart Locks and did get this to try out. The short of it: It’s going back in the box, never to be used again. The first thing I saw, was that the two pieces of sealing tape (to show it’s never been opened), were cut. The installation was fine, you need even less skill than installing a new deadbolt. One thing I found strange, is that I expected the product to sit “on top” of the existing deadbolt lever; that’s not the case. You remove the plate and lever and install this into the door, as if you were replacing the deadbolt entirely (keeping the outside/keyhole) as to still be able to use the key, in the event of WiFi/Bluetooth/tech issues. With the install kit, you also get some (painters) tape to cover the outside portion of the deadbolt, so it doesn’t fall out during the install. With an older door and a Schlage deadbolt that’s around a 15 years old, this installed into the deadbolt mechanism without issue. I did end up using the extra back-plate, as the lock itself didn’t cover the hole entirely. After the install was done, it was configuration time. In today’s WiFi land and with Mesh being more and more common, SSIDs are the same for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. If you DO have that, then you’re in trouble here. No matter what Access Point I used (Linksys or Ubiquiti), the lock setup failed because they run 2.4 & 5 on the same SSID. I went into my less used Ubiquiti Access Point and disabled 5GHz; setup was able to continue now that only 2.4GHz was present. Given this issue during setup, I questioned the technology here, immediately. I mounted the sensor on the wall near the door (you can drill into the door and not have any external/visible sensors), but I didn’t want to do this and completed the calibration. Even during calibration, I had issues unlocking and locking. I’d press the screen and it’s say the state changed, but nothing happened. Twisting the lock to engage the deadbolt a few times, would allow the App to work but then I noticed something. The deadbolt doesn’t extend the full length! Who wants a deadbolt that doesn’t go all the way into the frame? Not me! See the attached pictures for what I’m talking about. This is bad. My regular deadbolt extends 1in into the door frame - or thereabouts, once it passes the brass. With this “Smart Lock” - it only extends 0.5in. I could pull the deadbolt and push it as if it wasn’t completely connected internally, but when I twisted the lock mechanism and held my hand against it for resistance, the deadbolt only extended half an inch. I tied it into Google Home, but it wouldn’t work correctly. I got voice prompts back that it was "trying to do something" but it wouldn’t open or close. Google always told me that it was locked or already open, nothing ever happened. Then, I went back into the App to lock the door and it wouldn’t connect anymore. I waited another day, but it still wouldn’t connect. I uninstalled this and put my normal deadbolt back in.

      Hi there,

We are sorry to hear that you had trouble with your new smart lock. As for the deadbolt, it should fully extend. Our team took a look at your photos and it appears you may need to switch adapters from yellow to blue. The Google Assistant was also having issues due to the deadbolt not fully functioning - thus, the adapter switch should help with that as well. Hopefully some of these changes will improve your experience with the lock. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to [email protected] if you have any more questions or need help troubleshooting.

      Thanks,

Overall the lock worked great. Excellent choice for those living in an apartment where you cannot change the actual lock itself. Easy to install and remove when necessary. Batteries do run out about every other month or so. Frequently loses Wifi connection even when close to the router.

I wanted to have a smart lock on my door, but didn't want to replace the entire lock. I really like that this turns a standard deadbolt into a smart lock. The install of the hardware is very easy. Where I had issues was getting the lock to connect to Apple Homekit. I ended up having to use my iPad to do the connection to Homekit for this lock. My iPhone wouldn't allow me to get it connected. Other than that this lock is great. I can just tell Siri to lock or unlock my door. I get notifications when the door is locked or unlocked. The door ajar feature seems to only work in the August app only so I don't really use it all that much. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to have a smartlock but doesn't want to replace out their existing hardware.

I've been on the fence regarding smart locks for a while now. I've never understood the need for one until I saw it in action at my friend's house. He has a different brand smart lock, but it still got me intrigued at the notion of having one. After weeks of research, I decided to go with the August wi-fi smart lock. I was something that was simple and didn't have a num pad at the front door. In other words, I didn't want everybody in the neighborhood to know that I had installed one. The installation including the app installation and user account creation took less than 15 minutes to accomplish. Granted, if you've changed out door knobs or deadbolt locks before, it will come more naturally. Even if you haven't, the app shows you step by step on how to remove your current set up and install the smart lock. The features are great. I enjoy being able to lock and unlock with the app. I get notified when the doors been left open, and the auto unlock feature allows me to go through my door without having to pull out my smartphone. It's extremely pricey, but I think it was a great investment. I would definitely recommend it to anybody.

TLDR: It's simple and efficient to use and just works with all my automations and integrations. I have this lock on a dedicated 2.4ghz with the router nearby in a mesh network. Pros: Installation was simple. Was able to get it installed in 15 minutes and could've done it in 10 if I had a drill. App has features and a setup if you have multiple properties making it easier to manage. Although it's rather on the large side of things it's still looks better than most (except the level smart lock) Cons: It's a tad on the large side of things , and the battery life does tend to be lacking. I'd definitely recommend buying those cr2 batteries in bulk I saw some people having issues with connectivity. If you're having issues, I'd suggest getting a router that can run in a mesh network where you can separate the 2.4ghz band. This gave me the best connectivity and the lock hasn't dropped signal since.

Lock was good as it was the only ptoduct that did not need an additional wifi bridge. However setup with the app was difficult, as the app Bluetooth would not easily connect or download the latest firmware for 1st upgrade. Lock wifi is not reliable as it keeps disconnecting. Battery drains very quickly and connecting via an android app is not always easy as it take at least a good 30 to 40 seconds to give you status of Lock or unlocked.

Installation is a breeze. Lock works as expected. door sense is a great feature that alerts you in case the door was left ajar or open for an extended period of time. Home and Away modes are extremely handy features that will lock/unlock automatically. The battery life is quite unpredictable but that could be because of the batteries quality itself. I’d highly recommend this smart lock

I am living in the three floors house and I always have to come down from the third floor to the first floor if my friends come over to my home. This is an easy to install smartwatch that can install it in less than 5 minutes. It does not require any expertise for the installation. Only the sensor requires drilling if the door and molding are flush. I have noticed a few issues with the Apple Home control and apple watch shortcuts that do not work. I have set August's smart home shortcut in the watch screen which is easy to access. However, most of the time does not work. It has an auto-unlock feature that can open the lock when we go out of the range of the Bluetooth and come back home. However, it also has some issues. I have also noticed that lock batteries discharge quickly within 3 months. It should have a rechargeable thing that we can charge on the night or stand above the watch to charge via a power bank that can reduce maintenance costs. Overall, it is easy to install and the August application has a door lock history and access feature for temp or permanent. However, there is always some issue with the Apple Home control or smartwatch shortcuts and Bluetooth auto-unlock as well. They should also improve the batteries issue.

All the features are fine. Sometimes the connection to my phone disconnects so my door doesn't open when I get home. The issue I have is that I am literally replacing the battery every 30 days, with a rechargeable I'm replacing every three weeks. That is the only pitfall, but it is enough to have me look at other options.

Very easy to install. Only need a screw driver to undo 2 screws and this smart lock sides onto the inside half of your existing door knob. You can still access the door by using your standard existing key. Setup was simple. Download the app and select your 4th Gen smart lock. You will be guided step by step through the setup process. Surprisingly I think the manufacture did an extensive job to make sure this process goes smooth and with little fuss. Everything I did worked the first time and never gave me any issues. (Like pairing with the WiFi or the app being able to find the smart lock via Bluetooth) everything went well in the installation. Iv been using the lock for a full day and a half now on my front door that usually has slot of traffic each day going in and out. So far I'm really pleased with this smart lock! I would highly recommend it!

We’ve only had the August lock for a short time, but it is working great. We switched from a Kevo lock because the Kevo lock wasn’t responding well, and our guest keys didn’t work consistently. The August lock is small and compact, is working well, and has built-in WiFi. The installation could not have been easier. The only cons I’ve seen so far with it is that sometimes the auto-unlock doesn’t happen before I get to the door. So I have to use the app to unlock the door. Additionally, I do miss the touch-to-open feature of the Kevo, which is not available on the August lock. But all-in-all, we’re much happier with the August lock than we were with the Kevo lock.

This thing is amazing! First off it was super easy to install. They offer instructions, and if those are hard to follow, on the app they also provide you with step by step video setup. It connects super easy after that with alexa and/or home kit. Runs off battery but also still works like a normal lock. It will replace only the inside portion of your door lock. so if you live in an apartment, like i do, you dont have to replace the whole lock. this still allows landlords to get in if needed. its also not as bulky as i thought. it is bigger that the standard lock but its not huge.

I owned the previous gen August lock and wanted to upgrade. I love the size and the fact it doesn't need a separate wifi bridge, but boy does this thing HATE Apple's HomeKit. HomeKit will always read if it's locked or unlocked but it won't actually lock or unlock it, and definitely won't using Siri. My HomePod hub is about 15 feet away and every time I've tried to unlock it via the Home app or Siri, it says it's not connected. I've tried resetting it and reconnecting it a dozen times and August customer support is terrible. If you aren't using HomeKit, then the lock is great. It reads my phone when I get home to auto unlock and auto locks without fail. Just don't expect anything from HomeKit.

The August lock is a very worthwhile purchase. I researched smart locks for almost 6 months before moving forward with a purchase. The reason why I choose August is the proximity unlock, at the time of this review there’s is the only lock with this feature. I don’t like to feel obstructed from my home. I also don’t enjoy carrying keys. so, the aforementioned feature allows me access to my home without having to do a thing! I simply arrive within the defined home proximity as the door auto-unlocks. And if the door is not engaged (opened) within a certain timeframe, the door re-locks. Additionally, and this is a feature shared by most smart locks, I love that I can issue permanent, temporary, or recurring smart keys to our guests. admittedly, it would be nice if our guests did not have to download the August app in order to access the digital key. Well not too much of an issue for those we intend to give permanent or recurring access to, this could be bothersome for guests who only require one time access. The manual operation of the lock it’s very simple, turn left to lock turn right to open. The amount of live information you can access from the app is pretty impressive. The app informs you whether your doors locked, opened, unlocked, and the length of time that your door has remained open. If the lock is unlocked using the app or auto unlock, the app tracks who engaged the door. The insulation was quite simple, we used the included parts and the lock is functional in less than 30 minutes. For our door, we did need to drill the hole in our door a little bit larger for smooth operation of the lock. (If you need to lean on, kick, or otherwise manually push your door in order to get it to close/lock pre-installation, you will need to correct this for proper operation of the August lock) The one thing that I would like for August to offer in the future, is additional finishes on the lock. The silver looks a bit… cheap compared to my surrounding finishes. I would suggest a stainless steel, brushed nickel, and polished steel option.

I had been watching for a great deal on this device for a while and didn’t want to compromise picking up the 3rd gen that required the hub. Not sure if it is my wifi signal or what, but the unit disconnects from the wifi daily. It’s still a solid performer and hasn’t left me waiting to unlock. The auto lock and unlocalized features are great and you can customize them to your liking. Was a breeze to set up and this generation is smaller than the previous. Thinking about picking a second one for another door.
