This wireless lock has to be one of the best on the market. Great signal and app just plain works. The down side is that there’s no website to control your locks with. Only accessible via the app. Batteries that come with it only last a couple months. But most 123 batteries will last all year after that. Very easy to install since it uses your original lock mechanism.

Was looking for something that works with my existing key deadbolt and perfect solution. First set of battery ran out very quickly in few months, I hope it's one-off related to usage and not going to be the case all the time. One less star just due to that battery issue. Otherwise very nice and sleek smart lock.

I decided to purchase the August smart lock because I live on the second floor of an apartment building. I don't park close to my entrance and the auto unlock feature is what I was looking for. Often my arms are full when I walk up the stairs only to have to set items down to use they key to unlock. The August lock seemed like a simple solution. However it connects to my wifi and starts the unlock sequence. It will not unlock until you are in bluetooth range. In my case it does not connect until I am in front of my door and waiting for it to unlock. I have found if I hold my phone up in the air on my way upstairs it will unlock before I reach the door. My phone is usually in my pocket and it rarely picks it up until I am in front of my door resulting in me waiting at least 30 seconds to unlock. In that time I could have used my key and opened the door much faster. I have to walk around a wall that the stairs are against before I go up them. I am sure if you are in a house or a 1st floor apartment this would work as expected. I like the auto lock feature and the ability to unlock and lock remotely. However the auto unlock feature in my case is poor at best.

    Great Lock, but Battery Hungry

This is my second August Smart Lock, the first one being a 2nd gen if I recall correctly. That tells you I liked my first lock well enough to buy a newer one, relegating my older one to the garage door. Why 4 stars? Because the 4th Gen eats batteries and complains if they're not fresh. It takes 2-each CR123A batteries, which are more expensive than the "AA" batteries for my older lock. At 4 months, almost to the day, I start getting alerts the batteries need to be replaced. After 4 months the batteries are not depleted, they're just not fresh. Fortunately, I have several other CR123A using devices that aren't so finicky allowing me to get full use from the batteries. Everything else about the lock is great. I can control it or verify its status from my smart phone or with a voice command to "Alexa."

The lock works well, though it is hit and miss. Sometimes the auto-unlock works like a charm and sometimes I unlock the door, enter my home and lock the door and THEN August auto-unlocks. At just 6 weeks, the batteries had to be replaced, which is far less time than the 3-6 months indicated on the August website.

Just installed. Installation was quick and easy. Only needed a phillips head screwdriver. Was installed in about 15 minutes. The app walks you through the installation and network setup. Looking forward to using the auto unlock functionality with geofencing. I don't have any experience with the prior generations, other than the in-store demo units, however I always thought they were a bit too large. This one has a smaller profile that I prefer. Highly recommended Smart Lock.

Easy to install and use and good for apartments where you don't or can't change the actual lock. It is pretty pricey but it does the job. Only compliant for me is that there have been some issues with the auto unlock feature for me where I have to sometimes use the app the unlock. It does use C123 batteries

Easy install and set up...although the instructions regarding the plastic inserts could be a little be a little better. Battery life could be better as well...and they are lithium batteries, not run of the mill alkaline.

It works well for the most part. Sometimes I get an error message saying it just got reconnected to the wifi, I am not really sure if it is something wrong with my wifi or some sort of hardware issue with the lock but still I am happy with this lock.

Not sure if they all do this or just the newer version with the built in bridge that doesn't need another part. But I get notifications that the lock is offline. Not sure maybe it is my internet. We love the ability to open and lock our door from our phone. Very convenient.

There are so many things I love about the August Smart Lock. Since I installed it, we haven't used any keys. "Auto unlock" senses when we near the door from the outside and unlocks it as we near. I have "auto lock" set to 3 minutes, to give us time to get the mail and return without it locking. We love using Alexa to lock/unlock the door so we don't have to walk 30 feet to let our kids in. It was easy to install (10 minutes) and even my wife thinks it looks good.

Works great so far, automatically locks and unlocks. Had some issues getting the Apple HomeKit integration to setup had to do it multiple times for it to finally work. The device seems to lose signal to the WiFi network at times even though it has a strong signal.

    troublesome functionality; poor support

I purchased 2 of these, along with 2 keypads, based on their generally stellar reviews. Pros: Easy installation is; control w/ August app generally works. DoorSense is useful, if the August app works and the lock stays connected to Bluetooth/Wifi, telling me if my door’s left open. Cons: loses Wifi and Blutooth connectivity quite frequently and at random (despite good router and modem). - a primary reason I purchased the locks was their supposed HomeKit integration, which seems to work for some, but not for me, and, according to several web searches, not for others, despite using the most recent lock, app and firmware. The locks will appear in Home app, and Home tells me when the lock is locked or unlocked, but it won’t let me lock or unlock the locks or, thus, set automations within Home. Tech support is poor, esp. especially for a company owned by Yale. E-mail is the only support available (no phone), and to each of my responses, though I usually receive a fairly prompt response, it’s usually from a different person, thus continuity is poor. I submitted bug logs from within the August app, and when the tech support agents could go no further, I was told my debug was in a que of others, but not when, roughly (or if at all for certain),I’d hear back. Requesting returns/refunds past 30 days — even if the locks have never worked — doesn’t appear possible. So don’t purchase for a home project >30 days before you plan to install.

I see very mixed reviews for this. I installed mine and it has been working awesome the whole time. Only issue I had was I added one of my kids as a guest, and they couldn't connect with their iPhone. I changed them to an admin and it paired just fine. My Android worked great. Been 3 months and the batteries are still fine. I like how it is smaller than the previous generations. Looks really nice with our black handles.

I replaced a keypad lock with this one. It is so much better! Very easy to install. It uses the Bluetooth on my phone to detect when I leave the house and automatically locks if I haven’t already locked it. It also automatically unlocks when I return home. It works with Alexa, so I set up a command lock the door and set my alarm system all at once.

Good improvements from the first generation lock

I had been using the 1st generation August lock for years. It needed the connect WiFi hub or the doorbell cam for most of the features to work. Decided to upgrade to this version and have seen many improvements. The actual unit s smaller and easier to grasp and turn. The battery cover stays on and doesn’t pop off and disappear under furniture. The independent connection to the home WiFi frees up an outlet (no hub required). Door sense is a nice bonus. Installed the sensor into the door frame and it knows when the door is shut or open. The lock waits until you close the door before attempting to auto lock. Installation was quick. It even came with a disk that covers the old August lock foot print, so no need to repaint the door or have a ring of old paint color around the new lock. The only issue was getting the new lock to talk to the old keypad. Do not loose the serial number for the keypad! It is on the box and the mounting plate, not the actual keypad. This is not a problem with the actual smart lock, so no stars were dinged. The WiFi lock can be connected to some smart watches, which I never figured out to do with the 1st generation lock. Not seamless, but handy if you can’t get to the phone or don’t have the keypad. Overall the upgrade was worth the investment. If you want a lock that allows sharing access with friends and family (and has the instant ability to revoke access, no keys getting copies or not returned), will auto unlock when you approach the door, will auto lock when the door is shut and sends notifications when the lock is activated, this is a good lock to meet that need. If you still need to have a key, but want a smart lock this is a good lock.
