Redesign needed to avoid installation hassles

I hope the next generation supports 5ghz Wi-Fi and is much easier to install. The lock also needs to have a removable and rechargeable battery included ( two would be perfect). The function is fine, but having to turn off 5ghz Wi-Fi to get an install done is unnecessary with today’s technologies. Also, reducing battery waste needs to be a priority for all manufacturers.

I own two of the locks and have had issues with them. I put both of them on my back door which I use to enter my house 90% of the time. Issue #1 I want both of them to unlock when I arrive home. However, the app only allows you to have one lock open automatically based on location. I have one on my security door and one on the “regular” door so I need more than one lock to open based on location. I even tried to set my wife’s phone to connect to the “2nd” lock so both unlock when we get home. However, both locks unlock with location approximately 30% of the time. Issue #2 I have the Apple Watch app that is supposed to work to unlock the locks. This takes 10 seconds to a couple of minutes to work depending on the day. I can just unlock the door myself if it is going to take a couple of minutes to unlock it using the Apple Watch app. Issue #3 The batteries need to be changed approximately every 4-6 weeks. That is an added cost that I did not expect. Issue #4 It does not work with the Ring Alarm system. I wanted the unlocking of the door to automatically turn off the Ring Alarm like some of the other smart locks.

Unfortunately, I wish I had done my research before buying this product. It works well, is *very* easy to install (it fits over your existing deadbolt), and has good proximity awareness for when to lock/unlock your door, but it does not play nice with Google Pixel phones. Constant inability to connect to the device from the app. Can't recommend at all if you have that phone.

Good lock but not with Apple bridges like HomePod

I had this lock for awhile using just the august app. Worked well but I ultimately bought it to use with HomeKit. I struggled to make it connect even with adding a HomePod as a hub. What I eventually figured out is that my Wi-Fi signal was poor (and it told me so from the beginning) so I added the HomePod which was well within range of Wi-Fi strength and Bluetooth range. It basically split the difference on the distance. Didn’t work after many attempts. Finally added another router to increase the Wi-Fi strength and remove the HomePod from the equation. Once the Wi-Fi strength was increased I was able to connect to HomeKit. Lesson learned is that although it’s HomeKit compatible it doesn’t necessarily mean something is Apple hardware compatible. Kind of a bummer but it does work well now…. Even better than the app. By the way I did work with tech support and they were okay but I ultimately figured out the solution on my own. I really did my homework before I chose August. None are 100% issue free. My preconceived expectations caused disappointment but I’m happy with how it turned out. Also, this is my opinion in my particular application. I would recommend the purchase but make sure you test it out within the return window.

install was very easy. Just a screw driver to take off he inside part of deadbolt and literally clips on. I guess it is smaller than previous generations but it is still a good size but acceptable, Sometimes a get messages that it has dropped wifi and then reconnects. not often and does not seem to affect operation. I did have to recalibrate it once after doing it during the initial install. Not sure why, but seems fine now.

I installed this on my own and have never enjoyed an instillation process more. The instructions go step by step with the app which shows you video clips of exactly what you need to do. I live in a much older home and was curious if it was going to align but there are many ways you customize it to your door. I love that when I leave and come home it locks for me, just know you need to keep the app running in the background to do so (not a big deal) I have used many smart devices in my home and this in one of the few i have not had to reconnect to the wifi or anything like that. Would suggest to anyone. Last favorite item is how easy the guest keys are, send a text to your desired contact, they add the app and BOOM customizable access

Love the august platform and interface. I bought this because there is no wifi bridge needed, the only thing i'd like is easier setup for those of us who run a mesh network that merges 5 and 2.4.

Super easy to install and connect. Works great but not really meant to have more than one installed. For example, I put this on the front door and set it to auto unlock when I return home. If I come through the garage, it will unlock the front door. So I had to turn it off. This was unexpected, as I previously had Kevo locks and this was not a problem.

Highly recommended. Easy to install and setup. I like that it still uses the normal dead lock so you dont need to change your keys and from the outside it does not look like a smart lock.

Replaced a Gen1 August and Happy with results

Replaced my Gen1 August lock (Bluetooth). The Wi-Fi bridge began to fail so I was no longer able to remotely open if family or guest needed to be let in. I like the smaller form size. The different battery setup required me to go buy a pack of C123 batteries. Now what to do with all the AAA for the old lock. Setup was easy and straightforward. I opted not to use the "door ajar" sensor as it was not needed. Been happy so far. Interested in seeing how the battery life is on the C123s. The Gen1 went though AAA batteries pretty fast.

    Great Lock, but Battery Hungry

This is my second August Smart Lock, the first one being a 2nd gen if I recall correctly. That tells you I liked my first lock well enough to buy a newer one, relegating my older one to the garage door. Why 4 stars? Because the 4th Gen eats batteries and complains if they're not fresh. It takes 2-each CR123A batteries, which are more expensive than the "AA" batteries for my older lock. At 4 months, almost to the day, I start getting alerts the batteries need to be replaced. After 4 months the batteries are not depleted, they're just not fresh. Fortunately, I have several other CR123A using devices that aren't so finicky allowing me to get full use from the batteries. Everything else about the lock is great. I can control it or verify its status from my smart phone or with a voice command to "Alexa."

I have owned every generation of this lock and this one is the best yet! Not having to worry about the bridge in order to lock when out of Bluetooth range is great! It also stays connected to the wifi much better than previous generations that used the bridge. The smaller size is another plus that gives this generation a huge advantage. I don't love the new battery size compared to older ones, they use AA batteries whereas this one uses CR123A. Im sure its because of the smaller size so its not a huge issue, just a little thing to note.
