This thing is awful. I’ve had it for six months and have had to replace the batteries four times. I get notifications at least two or three times a day that it has dropped WiFi connection. I even moved one of my mesh router into the room with it and it still drops the connection. This is by far the worst smart home I own. I hate this thing.

WI-FI Smart Lock is the Keychain

Wi-Fi Smart Lock really does what it says. The deadbolt installation made easy with just a few steps and the August Smart Lock App takes over from there with your Smartphone. I think it 's great that you can operate under Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when using for auto Lock and Unlock commands like clockwork with the unique DoorSense technology keeping you safe.. I can lock my door while sitting at dining room table. The App loads activity of date and time Wi-Fi Smartlock events while the Keychain feature helps you operate smartlock. I will definitely find it usefull leaving home for work early in the morniong or coming home late at night. Being able to still use your keys is added security.

I've never heard of the August brand before, but I'm glad I know of it now. It's really great and its technology is just awesome. Installation is a breeze. The App is smooth and great--it makes me want to keep it and not delete it (it's also necessary to have to use the smart features). It looks really nice and sleek. You can customize what it can and can't do in so many ways. If you're planning on purchasing a lock that costs about the same price, you might as well get this lock. The main disadvantage is the wondering of if it can be hacked. I wouldn't doubt that it's possible, but it sure would take more effort than people that know how to already break regular locks.

Good remote mechanism - works with existing lock

I travel a lot, and from time to time I need someone to be able to enter my home; pet sitters, cleaners, to check an alarm, or to ship something I need. A remotely controllable lock makes a lot of sense for me. However, for security, I use Medeco locks on my house, so it was very important to me that any electronic lock mechanism be able to work with my existing hardware. Enter the third generation August Smart Lock. Setup is a breeze. The August easily replaced my existing thumb lever. Electronics setup is straightforward; download the app, create an account, and remove the plastic tab from the battery. The lock will automatically pair with your phone via Bluetooth. Calibrate the lock so that the August device understand when the door is ajar, connect it to your WiFi, and you're set. There is no separate hub to set up, no additional hardware required. Just one caveat; your lock must line up neatly with the strike plate. We've all had doors we have to push against to lock, or pull back just so to unlock. Those doors won't work, as there's no one there to push or pull. Here are the highlights of using it. Local access: In place of the thumb lever is a cylinder that can be manually turned. It lights up green when the door is locked, red when unlocked, so you can tell the current status from a distance. Remote access: Using the WiFi connection, I can remotely see the status of my door and lock, lock or unlock the door, and check entry history. Guest access: I can give remote access to anyone I choose, and revoke it when I choose. Guest access is via Bluetooth, so there's no need to give out WiFi information. Aesthetics: It's quite a bit smaller than similar units I've seen in other homes, but it's not small. You're going to notice it at first. In a small entryway (or small house), it will stick out. For a larger entryway / home you get used to it. It's only available in two colors, silver and black. My door hardware is brushed nickle, so it wasn't an exact match, but the matte silver is close enough. Security: Access through hacking is a concern with any electronic lock. A search for August breaches showed that there were no known issues, and the one thing that white hats found five years ago, the company fixed immediately. Privacy: This is critical. You don't want people able to purchase information on when you were home, how many guests entered, whose phone was used, etc. I have returned other smart home products because of poor privacy policies. August has a robust privacy policy in place. Overall, an easy to use, powerful remote lock that allows you to use your choice of deadbolts, with an attention to security and privacy. Definitely worth considering.

Battery issues is very common for many!

Please save yourself the hassle and headache and just Google "August 4th gen battery issue". The vast majority of people has their lock die on them within a month (some even sooner). There is a wifi bug in this model that continuously disconnects and then reconnects to your wifi. I called the company and they blamed my wifi router (Netgear ax4200, so... NO). And even if you recieve one of the few units that works flawlessly, you still have to swap batteries every 3 months. A set of lithium CR123 batteries and the company specifically states to avoid rechargables. I ended up going with a yale smart lock and couldn't be happier.

Worst product ever bought, I wasted 200$. This has battery life of around 1 month, and those batteries cost around 10$. Imagine the cost to keep it running.

I have been using the August 4th generation smart lock for a few days and I can honestly say, I like it but I am not in love with it. Set up was extremely easy. It came with all the parts I needed to switch out the thumb lock on my deadbolt. The app was easy to set up. Using the App, I was able to add household members via my phones contact list. It opened and closed the lock without issues 99% of the time and it operated almost immediately. When I was inside the house, I was also able to operate it using my google assistant and frankly, it does what I need it to do. The reason I say I am not in love with it, is for a two reasons. Although, it is smaller than its predecessors, its still larger than my door handle. Which makes it stick out. Also, it uses CR123 batteries. While these batteries allowed August to make the smart lock smaller it now forces me to buy a battery that I do not ever use. With all that being said, I would still recommend it for anyone that wants a smart lock that is reliable and allows you to still use a key.

I have a rental property out of state, and thought this lock would be great for renters and it integrates with AirBnB. Wrong! I had this lock installed and used it for 3-4 days while I was in town. Cleaning crew used it successfully. I set up guest access for my renter and once they arrived they could not access the unit. I could no longer access the lock either, and the app told me to "recalibrate". Well, I was no longer in the area so that was impossible. I had to overnight a key to my renters at a ridiculous rate. I will be replacing this lock for something more dependable ASAP.

    Unreliable

Pretty unreliable. It works okay if you use their app only, but it almost never works using the Apple Home app (times out) and it has problems when using a physical key. For example, if you lock the door with a physical key, the lock doesn't detect that the door is locked and considers it still unlocked. Then, if you want to unlock with the app, you have to lock the door in the app (even though it is locked) and wait for it to error out before you can unlock it.
