HomeKit Integration unreliable
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought the August WiFi lock specifically because of the HomeKit integration. It has been almost a month and August can’t get the lock to work with HomeKit. I get the notifications, but HomeKit returns a device not responding error when I attempt to control the lock with Siri or through the Home App. While the August support is responsive to email, they have yet to offer a solution other than to say there is a ticket open and the issue is being researched.

Will not work with the latest version of Android!
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Wow....what a mess! I installed this lock this morning and when I tried to run the "calibrate" routine on my phone, it would not run. When I called customer service, they told me that they are "very sorry", but this new 4th generation lock does not work with the latest Android version (I have a Samsung S9+ with Android version 10). Crazy! I told the lock off the door, put my old lock back on and am returning this expensive (and poor quality) lock back to get a refund.

Nothing but problems
||Posted . Owned for 11 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. At first, this lock was great, but its time has gone on. It has become more of a hassle than a convenience. It's constantly losing Wi-Fi connection in a home that has some of the best Wi-Fi you could possibly dream of. The door calibration is constantly off. It's a nuisance and an annoyance. Going back to the Wyze lock

Not a great lock
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I would not recommend this lock unless you have a new door. I have an older door and I spoke to August support many times to get this lock working with my door. The last message I got from August Tech support, was "the lock will not work on your door, sorry." and that was that. Absolutely pathetic response.

Absolute Junk!!!
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Don't waste your money on this junk. It's a guessing game. Some days it works. Somedays it doesn't work. Most days I feel like throwing it in the trash. Totally forget about this item if you want Apple Homekit to work with it. I honestly don't think I've been this disappointed with a purchase since I made the awful mistake of buying a brand new 1995 Dodge Neon. Stay away and save your sanity!

Strong, Convenient, electronic lock !
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Looks wise this is a little bulky, but functionally the size is appropriate. It is designed to fit inside your hand, and turn with little effort. Which is exactly what this does. Rotating the dial to lock or unlock your door is very easy. The outer ring of the lock is grooved for extra grip. The handle feels very sturdy, and of quality construction. The magnetic cover, that houses the batteries, holds it's place so well, you will forget that it even comes off. Manual use of this lock, from the dial to the key, works perfectly. For aesthetic purposes it would also be nice if the device came in more colors besides just silver and black. Our current handles were kind of a brushed nickel, so the silver is a decent enough match. Installation was actually just as easy as they said. There are a few instructions inside the box to help you out,but there are actual videos and more detailed instructions inside the August Smart Lock app. It takes you through everything step by step. Installation can take about 5 to 10 minutes, depending on your method. They give you a few options. It was very easy to remove the inside half of my current deadbolt, make sure you tape the other half to the door with the included tape, so it stays up while you are working. The next step is to place the mounting plate onto the open hole in the door. (there are 2 plates inside the box.The larger diameter plate is only used if you have a large hole in your door, and the mounting plate is too small to cover it.) After this, all you have to do is match up the correct included adapter with your cylinder locking tab/pin.The smart lock goes right into place, and then locks there with two side levers. (easy as pie)The next step can be slightly more laborious. If you want the app to know if your door is open or closed, you must install the door sensor. This can be done quickly if the edge of your closed door, butts up to a flat wall. You can simply screw it to the wall , lined up next to the Smart Lock. If your wall doesn't have room for an extra obtrusion, than you can drill a small 5/8ths size hole into the door jam, and place the sensor there. It is well hidden, and out of the way with this method. Setting up the app is just as easy as the lock installation. Once you have registered your lock, and paired it to your phone, comes the fun part. Here you can give access to other family members and friends, or anyone you want to have access to your home. Each individual needs to register also, but it will be under your lock profile. Once that is done, the app keeps a log of the times and whomever locks or unlocks the door electronically. You can even set up guest access to the lock. The cool thing here is that once you are connected to the Smart Lock, you can lock, unlock or see if your door is open from anywhere you have data, on your phone. You could be at the store, and forgot your friend was stopping over to borrow something. Instead of having them waiting around for you to get home, you can simply unlock the door for them from the store, and then lock it after they have left. It is really very convenient. For more convenience, you can pair your lock with your favorite assistant, like Alexa , Google , and Siri. Here you can verbally lock and unlock your door, for guests or whatever. I paired mine with Alexa, I had to set up a verbal code through the app, to give Alexa permission to access the lock, so far I only had to use the code once. Using the lock through the August app and Alexa has worked out great. The August app also has a cool feature for auto unlocking and auto locking. The app can tell when you are home and unlocks the door for you. This is extremely helpful when you have your hands full, and you are trying to get in the house. Keep in mind this feature runs off the accuracy of your GPS on your phone. It is supposed to lock your door, once you leave your neighborhood (about 200m), and unlock your door when you are within a couple feet from it. So if you live in an apartment complex, or other tight living areas, this might not be suitable for you. The auto unlock and lock feature is optional, and is turned off by default. So far this Smart Lock has been great, I no longer need to hide keys outside, because my oldest son either forgets to take his house key with him, or loses it somewhere(SMH). The whole key thing with him has always been a crazy situation. Now August has saved us all from the headache with their new Smart Lock!I absolutely love the functionality of the lock, and the fact that I can look through my logs to see when that sneaky kid got home last night, lol !!

Posted .Hello,
Thank you for taking your time to write about your experience with the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock. We're glad to hear you are enjoying the lock! Please note that only the Auto-Unlock feature uses geo-fencing. Auto-Lock does not work based on your phone's location and you do not need to leave a certain distance for Auto-Lock to trigger. It instead automatically secures your front door once DoorSense detects it has been closed. Or you can set Auto-Lock based on a timer to automatically lock the door after it has been closed for a certain amount of time. Please let us know if you have questions.
Thanks, August Home

A good addition to my Home Automation setup
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The August Wi-Fi smart lock is a pretty cool device which attaches to your existing deadbolt to add home automation to locking and unlocking of a door into your house or apartment. This version (which I believe is the fourth generation) is substantially smaller than previous versions so it doesn’t stick out as much as those did. They accomplished this by converting the batteries utilized in the unit from standard AAs to CR 123 batteries. I don’t usually use these batteries in other devices but I would expect them to have a pretty decent battery life and when it’s time to replace it that magnetic cover comes off the unit fairly easy and it is simple to replace the batteries As for set up you have to download the August Home app for your mobile device either iOS or Android, there is not much documentation provided in the package, just a few small cards and that’s about it. Everything else requires the app, as it walks you through the set up, it is not a big deal but I still like to have a hardcopy or at least a PDF to download just to understand exactly how this device gets installed and setup. The app then walks you through setting up the device that connects via Bluetooth initially, you calibrate the lock to determine how far the open and close position is with your particular lock. If you are using iOS it interfaces with IOS’ HomeKit and this way you have functionality with Siri. Setup also attempts to connect to your Wi-Fi network so you can remotely. My router is pretty distant from where I was installing this lock, during setup the app complained about Wi-Fi being too far away and could I move the router closer to the lock. That was not possible at this time and I didn’t want to connect it to my other access point in the house, but since were moving within a month and I will be taking this device with me I thought it was not a big deal. As for the app it has all the standard features that you would expect in a basic lock, you can also use a proximity detection and geolocation to automatically lock and unlock based on your proximity to the device. The device remotely if the Wi-Fi is enabled as I mentioned I was not able to connect this to my Wi-Fi network but it would be handy to be able to do that especially when showing a house for sale like I’m doing. you can also give others access to this lock so they can have the same functionality I haven’t really explored that yet but seems like it would be a good thing for the rest of the family if they wanted to utilize this device to get in and out of our house. Overall this is another device in my home automation set up and frankly is something that seems to be a pretty useful addition. Pros: - makes it simple to unlock and lock your house lock and forget - Looks good substantially smaller than previous generations - Well built Cons: - Lack of comprehensive instructions, only a few cards provided in the packaging. Install is totally app driven. - WiFi reception range (was 50 feet from 2.4ghz access point, through a floor and several walls, my iPhone showed full strength)

Smart? More like genius!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've never heard of the August brand before, but I'm glad I know of it now. It's really great and its technology is just awesome. Installation is a breeze. The App is smooth and great--it makes me want to keep it and not delete it (it's also necessary to have to use the smart features). It looks really nice and sleek. You can customize what it can and can't do in so many ways. If you're planning on purchasing a lock that costs about the same price, you might as well get this lock. The main disadvantage is the wondering of if it can be hacked. I wouldn't doubt that it's possible, but it sure would take more effort than people that know how to already break regular locks.

Excellet lock, has HomeKit issues
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This lock is excellent. Its super easy to install (as long as your strike plate lines up with the deadbolt), and it doesn't require new keys so its landlord friendly. The august app works great, the lock responds quickly and the Apple Watch app makes it even easier. The auto-lock is extremely helpful and comforting, and auto-unlock can be very nice. This new generation also is much smaller and looks so much better. This locks diameter is not much bigger then the original thumb turner, but it is quite a bit thicker. Overall I love this lock, I just have one issue with it: it stops responding in HomeKit all the time. Almost half the time when I try to use HomeKit to lock or unlock the door it doesn't work. If this is fixed in software this is an easy 5 star. TLDR: Really good, good for renters, has issues with HomeKit.

Good remote mechanism - works with existing lock
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I travel a lot, and from time to time I need someone to be able to enter my home; pet sitters, cleaners, to check an alarm, or to ship something I need. A remotely controllable lock makes a lot of sense for me. However, for security, I use Medeco locks on my house, so it was very important to me that any electronic lock mechanism be able to work with my existing hardware. Enter the third generation August Smart Lock. Setup is a breeze. The August easily replaced my existing thumb lever. Electronics setup is straightforward; download the app, create an account, and remove the plastic tab from the battery. The lock will automatically pair with your phone via Bluetooth. Calibrate the lock so that the August device understand when the door is ajar, connect it to your WiFi, and you're set. There is no separate hub to set up, no additional hardware required. Just one caveat; your lock must line up neatly with the strike plate. We've all had doors we have to push against to lock, or pull back just so to unlock. Those doors won't work, as there's no one there to push or pull. Here are the highlights of using it. Local access: In place of the thumb lever is a cylinder that can be manually turned. It lights up green when the door is locked, red when unlocked, so you can tell the current status from a distance. Remote access: Using the WiFi connection, I can remotely see the status of my door and lock, lock or unlock the door, and check entry history. Guest access: I can give remote access to anyone I choose, and revoke it when I choose. Guest access is via Bluetooth, so there's no need to give out WiFi information. Aesthetics: It's quite a bit smaller than similar units I've seen in other homes, but it's not small. You're going to notice it at first. In a small entryway (or small house), it will stick out. For a larger entryway / home you get used to it. It's only available in two colors, silver and black. My door hardware is brushed nickle, so it wasn't an exact match, but the matte silver is close enough. Security: Access through hacking is a concern with any electronic lock. A search for August breaches showed that there were no known issues, and the one thing that white hats found five years ago, the company fixed immediately. Privacy: This is critical. You don't want people able to purchase information on when you were home, how many guests entered, whose phone was used, etc. I have returned other smart home products because of poor privacy policies. August has a robust privacy policy in place. Overall, an easy to use, powerful remote lock that allows you to use your choice of deadbolts, with an attention to security and privacy. Definitely worth considering.
