Great smart lock if you love your existing lock
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The August Wi-Fi Smart lock is an interesting solution to bring smart lock functionality to a deadbolt lock that already exists in your home. At it's core, it's a device that replaces the inside lever for your existing deadbolt. Instead of you using the manual lever, this device receives a command from the app that turns the lever on your behalf. It's a pretty simple solution that doesn't require "forklift upgrading" your existing lock. I wish I could say that installation of this lock was straight forward. I consider myself pretty handy, as well as pretty good with technology and gadgets in general. To begin the installation process, you download the August app, register for an account (Mandatory 2FA required - Nice!), create a "Home" (A home is a group of locks at one address, in case you have August locks installed at multiple residences like your vacation home and your main home, or maybe some Airbnb properties you own.), then choose the option to add a lock. The installation process is outlined step by step, and follows along the process which is table stakes for smart home gadgets these days - choose your model, scan the QR code on the device to pair it, and then the physical installation steps are shown on screen as you are walked through each step. Where my installation went sideways turned out to be where you have to choose which brand of lock you are implementing the August Smart Lock on. Included with the lock are four colored adapters. These adapters fit on the August Smart Lock and then mate to the cam bar inside of the lock. The cam bar is the long rod that connects the front of the lock, through the deadbolt, to the rear of the lock - it's the part that turns when you turn the key / inside lock lever. The instructions tell you to use a certain colored adapter based upon the manufacturer of the lock you have. I had a Schlage lock, so the app advised me to use the yellow adapter. I put the yellow adapter on, the adapter fit, the lock mounted, and manually turning the lock would lock and unlock the deadbolt. Sounds good, right? No.. Not so fast. The lock has to be at a certain orientation to the door to be detected as locked/unlocked in the app when you start the calibration process, and mine was not. So on a Friday night at 9:00P Central - I called support. The IVR system for August is actually pretty neat and sent me a text message with a link to an online support article that tried to solve my problem, but did not. A rep was not immediately available, but I did receive a call back within about 10 minutes - which I thought was actually pretty good given the time of day as well as staffing may be affected due to the current pandemic. After working with support for about an hour, and the support rep escalating to her next tier, it was suggested I try the blue adapter - Once I changed out the adapter, I immediately noticed the orientation of the rotation of the smart lock on the door changed - unlocked was now at about the 1:00 position, and locked was now more toward 10:00. This is apparently what is required for calibration to complete, as I was able to calibrate the lock in one attempt after switching the adapter. Also included with the lock, but wasn't readily apparent, was the inclusion of the "Doorsense" module, which is essentially a magnet that you affix to the door frame. if the smart lock is unlocked, but detects the presence of the magnet, it can assume the door is closed and will tell you the open/closed status of the door in the app. Kind of a neat feature, but the doorsense magnet is somewhat tacky looking. There is an option for flush mounting it in the door, but requires a 5/8" spade bit that I didn't have, and obviously drilling an appropriate hole in your door. All that being said, once the lock was installed, the functionality was as expected. Lock requests from the app were quick, and the door lock makes a different chime when the lock is toggled to lock or unlock. I did have to go in to lock setup and configure Wi-Fi though - I was surprised that this was not part of the initial setup work flow. Once Wi-Fi is set up, the lock can be controlled from anywhere that your mobile device has connectivity. I also immediately set up the Alexa skill, which is what we use to control the lock the most in our house. As per Alexa's interface with smart locks, the option to unlock the door via voice command is something that needs to be enabled manually, which I like and have disabled. Asking Alexa to lock the lock is quick (usually within 10 seconds) and works great when I see my 1 year old making a beeline for the door when I forgot to lock it. It was also easy to integrate the August Smart Lock into my routines (I.e. "Going to bed" locks all doors, turns off lights, sets thermostat down, etc..), as well as our leaving home routine. Since this lock is on our garage entry, we can have it lock the door 30 seconds after we trigger the routine, which provides decent piece of mind that in case we forget to close the garage door- the entry is going to be locked. Aesthetically, the lock is definitely notable. Its large stature and matte silver finish make it look much more formidable than the lock it's controlling. I would have liked to have seen Z-Wave compatibility maintained in this model, to work with my Ring alarm system, but if that's a show-stopper feature, you can buy the model that has Z-Wave and use a Wi-Fi bridge. Overall, this is a decent option if you need to keep the lock you already have. For the retail price, you can likely buy an entire deadbolt replacement. This product would be great for apartments, dorms, or really anywhere you don't own, but want to smart lock enable.

Lack luster HomeKit support
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have many HomeKit items and they are all not created equal. While, this item is WiFi enabled Bluetooth is still needed for HomeKit support and door sense is not supported in HomeKit.

Posted .Hello,
Thank you for taking your time to provide your feedback. We connect to HomeKit using Bluetooth. It's standard to require a compatible Apple TV, iPad or HomePod within Bluetooth range of the lock for remote access using HomeKit.

I love this addition to my home!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My husband and I have spent months arguing over who gets to get out of bed and go check to see that the basement door is locked... this product may have actually saved our marriage (or at least his life). Not only is it beyond helpful for those moments of laziness that tend to sneak it but it’s also awesome that I can go out for a run and not have to manage keeping a key on me. I am truly so glad to have this product The installation was super easy, thanks to the step by step photos provided in the app and while the app itself took a minute to get used to and navigate, I really feel like it’s pretty user friendly.

Easy to setup, easier to use
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Setup was easy. I followed the directions outlined in the box: Install the August app, open it up, create an account, and then follow the step by step instructions to swap off the thumb turn with the August lock. I have a Kwikset deadbolt, and the August lock adapted easily to it. Connecting the August lock to wifi was a tad more difficult. My phone was connected via a 5gh network and I had to switch it over to my 2.4gh to get the wifi setup to go through. Even then, something wasn't working right and we couldn't get Apple's Home Kit to talk to the lock. I read some Q and A's on August's website and saw where they suggested to force quit the August app and reopen. Once we did that, setting up Home Kit via our iPhones was a breeze. The August app helps you work through the Home Kit setup which enables you to say, "Hey Siri, please unlock or lock my front door." Siri then tells you, "Working on it" and "Ok, your front door is unlocked." Pretty cool stuff! We tested the wireless functionality using wifi and cell signal with our iPhones and have had no problems getting the lock to respond no matter where we are. We used both the August app and the Home app to lock and unlock, no issues at any point. The lock itself looks and feels heavy duty. I'm not sure if it is made from SS or brushed aluminum, but it is a very handsome lock and looks nice on the front door. Only gripe is the plastic adapter that goes from the deadbolt mechanism to the August lock. I'm always leery about using plastic, as it can wear and break, but hopefully, it will hold up over the years. I really like the August lock. It addresses a need that we've had for ages to be able to cycle a lock open without a key. Keep in mind, a key can still be used; but as long as you have Bluetooth or wireless capabilities, a phone can handle the open and close no problem.

Great way to remotely unlock your door
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock for about a week now. I am really enjoying all the features on it. I believe one of the best features of the lock is that you use most of the original deadbolt hardware, so there is no issue with having the lock rekeyed. I also like that it still uses a key and you do not have to worry about getting locked out if the battery dies, I’ve had that happen with another keyless lock, I had to break in to get inside and change the batteries. One of the benefits of having a keyless lock is you can share a code with other people and not have to give them a key. You can share the code for as long as you need and then delete the code as needed via your phone app. I have an older home which we remodel regularly. To be able to give the plumber, electrician or painter a code that would let him in and I would not have to leave work to let them in is going to be a big plus. Other keyless locks you must program a code into the lock itself and then delete it after they finish, which is a pain. With the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, you use the app on your phone and add or delete codes as needed. You can also have them call you when they get to the house and remotely unlock the door yourself with out a code. You can program the lock to use geo-fencing that will know when you leave and when you come back, it will unlock the door for you, so you will not have to dig your keys or your phone out to unlock the door. The installation was easy, you take the inside deadbolt mechanism off, add the correct adaptor for your type of deadbolt, put everything back together and your off and running. There is also a Door sensor that will tell you if the door is not shut. This has been one of the best smart home products that I have purchased, even my wife is not intimidated by using it.

Posted .Hello,
We're glad to hear you are happy with your new August Wi-Fi Smart Lock. Please note that only the Auto-Unlock feature uses geo-fencing. Auto-Lock does not work based on your phone's location. It instead automatically secures your front door once DoorSense detects it has been closed. Or you can set Auto-Lock based on a timer to automatically lock the door after it has been closed for a certain amount of time. Please let us know if you have questions.
Thanks,

Pretty Impressive
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This smart lock is my first smart lock. The 4th generation August Smart Lock has a sleek look to it. It is sized right and I like the silver finish. The lock installation is remarkably easy. First download the app and follow the installation instructions in the app.You simply remove the turn knob of your deadbolt then install the appropriate adapter and back plate with the screws you have on your lock. Slide the 2 wing locks into place and you are done. The lock install took less than 5 minutes. It is at this point I did have a problem. The app and my lock were out of sequence they could not get on the same page and get the lock to work properly. However this was not a problem because August provides first rate customer support and after consulting with customer service the problem was resolved. While my lock is a schlage lock and that means I need to use the blue adapter ( and did) in the end the app and lock worked with us using the yellow adapter. They stood with me and worked hard to get this right and that is a plus because it shows the support of August is first rate. The lock is WiFi and Bluetooth enabled and has geo-fencing ability. This means that as you approach your home you can set the lock to automatically open when you are in the geo-fence range thus giving you added piece of mind and security so that you can go right into your home. What I truly like is the ability to unlock my door via WiFi and allow people into my home on an as needed basis without providing a key or hiding a key on the property. The lock is powered by 2 batteries and the manufacturer estimates appx a 6 month life expectancy for the batteries. Another great feature for this lock is something called 'door sense' this allows you to know the status of your door as to the unlock/lock position. This lock can be controlled with all its features including door sense through amazon alexa or google home thus adding more convenience. The app is very easy to use. A green circle indicates the lock is unlocked. Tap it and the circle turns red meaning the lock is locked. You can name your lock and add some features in the setup ( geo-fencning and door sense) The 4th generation August Smart wifi lock is impressive and combined with first rate customer support the lock is at the head of the class.

Super Simple, Attractive, and HELPFUL
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This lock does everything you want it to. It easily installs by removing the inside of your current deadbolt which leaves a clean, unsupecting view on the outside - AND leaves you the option to use your existing key. On top of that, it is very easy to send an invite to others to have access. The wi-fi version is PERFECT for those who don't want yet another bridge to connect. The integration with google home is seemles too. Don't worry, they require a verbal pin in order to unlock the door. You will not be dissapointed!

It's Like American Healthcare: Bad But Expensive
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had this for 2.5 years now and wanted to like this lock, but it's been such a source of irritation. My grievances: - The battery runs out too quickly. I bought the lock in October 2021 and it just drained my 24th battery 123. So the battery burn rate has been 2 new batteries every 2.5 months, despite the fact we rarely use autolocking features and have confirmed with their tech support their is no resistance/obstruction in our door strike. - The 123 lithium camera batteries are too expensive. - Always has issues integrating with HomeKit. - Aesthetic of the big round knob is confusing to guests. I wanted to like you, August Lock. For 2 years I tried. But I'm switching to Schlage Encode Plus.

Great until it locks you out
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had this for two years and it guzzled through batteries. In a year I would go over twelve CR123 batteries. However, the final straw was when I left for a walk without my keys and returned to the August lock throwing a jammed error. This ended with a hefty locksmith bill and the need to replace our deadbolt fully. August lock is convenient and acceptable if you don't care about reliability.

Great customer service and warranty!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought two of these with the connect and installed it on my front door and garage access door. Realized I don’t need wifi for the garage door and returned it to buy the smartlock without connect directly on the site. Was easy to install and worked flawlessly providing us peace of mind/convenience of making sure we never forget to lock the door and be able to open our door to give access to relatives while we are halfway around the globe. FFWD two weeks ago when connect and smartlock wont communicate to each other. I simply sent at email to August Customer care. They responded within 48 hrs and asked me to take a video of what’s going on and after a few days got an email that they sent me a replacement. Great customer service. Now I can remotely check status of my lock again.

Unusable on HomeKit
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Installation was easy and I really liked that your existing hardware stays in place. The app walks you through setup and had no hiccups or issues. In fact, this is probably the best smart device setup I've done so far out of 20+ devices in my home. Once setup everything worked well when using the native August app and Homekit alerts came popped up quickly whenever the lock was toggled. However, I was unable to get the device to respond to Homekit commands of any kind. No matter what I tried the device would always show the dreaded "No Response" error anytime I brought up Homekit, attempted to toggle the lock or use it from a scene. I spent several hours on support boards only to find hundreds of complaints about the same issue with no-one able to solve their issues. My Apple TV Homekit hub is line of site to this device and only around ten feet away in the same room but the lock cannot receive commands at all. Removing and re-adding the device will allow it to work for 10 or 15 minutes before it becomes unavailable again. Given that I have over 20 smart devices in my home without this problem I have to consider this device a massive design failure and can't recommend it for Homekit users. If you do not care about Homekit this lock is a winner. Solid hardware, simple installation and you keep your existing locks and keys. Four stars if you are not a Homekit user and one star if you are.

Great way to keep your same deadbolt
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Product works really well. The only downside is the lag for the door to unlock when I get home. Sometimes I'll have to wait at the door for 15 seconds or so before it'll unlock. Not terrible but after a long day 15 seconds feels a lot longer. App is up and down. I get "Connect to a device to change setting" a lot of them time but I don't do much on the app.
