I LOVE this drone. It is extremely stable and easy to fly. The pictures and videos are amazing. The only thing I wish it had was more autonomous flight modes.

I love gadgets and I'm getting close to retirement so what better than a drone. This is my second Autel drone. I love the quality...and the color's cool too, but the best part is the awesome videos and pictures it takes. Top shelf.

Amazing! My first high end drone but can't imagine there's much better. Flew in outer banks in 20 mph winds with no issues. Incredible camera. Easy to fly and 20 min plus flight times. Night images are still pretty good

I love this Drone! It's super easy to fly, it takes amazing video too. The gimbal for the camera is so stable that if I let the drone hover while taking video, it actually looks like a still photograph. There's no shaking, wobbling, or stutter. The video is nice and vivid with everything nicely in focus. I can't wait till the leaves start changing color so I can take my drone up in the mountains and video the forest. I never thought that just flying around taking pictures and video could be so much fun.

The Autel EVO is an excellent premium mid-sized drone that is highly portable, easy to fly and produces fantastic video and photos. First impressions out of the box give you a sense of the premium nature of the product. The drone feels solid and well-built with a mix of plastic and metal parts. The camera gimbal, when out of the guard, will move around a lot on you, but this is the nature of a well stabilized camera. You'll appreciate this soon enough. And the remote feels solid and very comfortable in hand, without being too heavy. Initial setup is easy to complete following the included 'Quick Guide' and takes about an hour. Charging both the drone (removable battery) and the remote (fixed battery) is accomplished simultaneously with the included AC brick. After that you must update the firmware. This can be accomplished via a manual download from Autel's website (if you don't have a smartphone) or through your own smartphone connected to the remote and the 'Autel Explorer' app. A few things to note: 1) The cable included to charge the remote has a micro-USB B end on it while the remote itself has an unmarked square micro USB A port. The 2 connect fine, but cause you to second-guess if you're doing it correctly. 2) While an iPhone should work with the remote (I flew using an OG Pixel), an Apple Lightning cable to connect the 2 is not included and must be purchased separately. 3) Register your drone with the FAA. Even if you're just a hobbyist. While its charging is a good time to take care of this. The process is easily done via the FAA website. It takes just a couple of minutes and only costs $5 for 3 years. Like the initial setup, preparing to fly is similarly easy to step through. Setting up the drone, the arms are labeled clearly on how to unfold and have a solid, positive feel to them. If you're using a smartphone, connect your smartphone to the remote, power on the remote and the app launches automatically. Once both units are powered on, the remote will automatically connect to the drone and confirm its status, confirm a GPS signal, set the home point, and be ready to launch. In flight, the drone is easy to control, very responsive, and very stable, even in a moderate wind. Front facing and below obstacle avoidance work very well, though the rear obstacle avoidance is far less sensitive. Note that there is zero sensors for obstacle avoidance on the sides. Advanced flight modes such as Dynamic Track or Orbit, while not intuitive to find in the app, work very well and produce good results with minimal effort. 'Return to Home' has proven very accurate. And Flight time for me has clocked in around 22 minutes. This is a bit short of the advertised duration of 30 minutes, but could be related to environmental conditionals and/or piloting choices. Finally, the 4k camera on the EVO really is the icing on the cake. Video quality is superb with excellent detail and color representation and the image is ultra-stable thanks to the amazing gimbal. Easy access to the manual settings such as ISO or shutter speed really allow you to tailor the image to your circumstances and options such a video/photo file format (MP4, MOV, etc) are greatly appreciated. There are also filters available (ND, Polarized, etc) which are super easy to install. One other point I want to make. I needed to deal with Autel's support due to an issue I had (self-induced. not the drone's fault). The US-based support is super easy to deal with and very helpful.

Great Mavic replacement, but requires FAA license

I'm writing this review after having the drone for about a week and only using it sparingly because I found out after I received it that the FAA has changed the rules (again! @@@@@@@ and now I have to register my drone (more info here: https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/ and https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2017/december/13/drone-registration-requirement-returns). However registration requires a written test that I have to take from a third-party site that is not convenient get to. Thus, I have only taken this drone out for very limited flight time. Overall, this is a great option if you like the DJI Mavic form factor and features. The size is comparable to the Mavic (see pictures), and the set I received included a carrying case and controller. Performance is on par with other drones in this price range, but Autel has some advanced features that are not available in this price range too (automatic object avoidance front/back, height sensing cameras). The orange color is VERY orange and bright, so this is definitely not a "stealth" drone, although you could mask it pretty easily if you're patient and have good quality (3M) film. Photos are good (not great). The included gimbal does a decent job of stabilizing the image. I'll try to post some actual shots later (BB is limiting me to 2 pictures).

Okey so I had the xStar premium Drone and that went outdated by the company so I should have turned my back to them right? WRONG! This is one bad to the bone drone! This is the fastest video drone, this has image stabilization Like a champ! This Drone can be flower with out a cell phone for once. Sure you only get half the speed but you get all the distance. This is the best drone I have ever had! I love the small size it folds up into. I feel far more confident Flying this drone in high winds and long distances over water then I ever have with any other drones. This is the drone to own. Get all the benifits without spending crazy money on the other guy. You know who I am talking about. This is the king of drones and I have literally taken it everywhere.

Best Buy facilitates the online ordering process via a very straightforward and user-friendly process. Kudos to Best Buy for a very enjoyable online shopping experience. My Autel Robotics EVO quadcopter arrived two days after having placed my order. Since its introduction, the EVO has received numerous firmware updates, all of which have improved the flying characteristics and stability of the aircraft, according to drone flying enthusiasts. The EVO is both a work of art and a remarkable technological achievement for Autel Robotics. The EVO is exceedingly well built. It is a pleasure to maneuver and the video is stunning, especially with the use of a quality lens filter. The remote controller's display screen is vividly colorful and very intuitive. To be sure, there will continue to be major advancements in this industry, however, the EVO should provide many hours of enjoyment both in its flying prowess and exceptional imagery. Lastly, and quite importantly, before you launch your aircraft for its maiden flight, remember to register with the FAA, become familiar with the flying rules and know how to accomplish a very thorough preflight checklist. Discipline, maturity and good judgment are essential prior to, during and after each flight. Plan your flights, know your personal limitations and respect your environment, to include current and forecast weather conditions and people and property in the vicinity of your flight. Flying, in all of its forms, is a rewarding experience, from which great pride is derived, but only when it is accomplished properly.

Summery: This is a very easy drone to fly, it looks great, it flies great, it shoots images and videos great, a good range, and speed, 2 different ways to take off, no real need for a mobile phone to operate, and NO need for mandatory updates before flying and not locked in no fly zones. Package contents: - The drone - Battery - Extra 2 propellers - 32 GB micro SD card already inserted - Remote controller with 3.3 lcd screen that allows to receive video feed. - Charger that charges both the battery and the remote control at the same time - Micro USB cable, and a USB C cable - The quick start guide and safety information Drone design and durability The drone is beautiful, sleek design that stands out with its foldable design that gives it a huge portability and can be easily stored in any backpack if you don't have or want to carry the drone bag itself which is small enough to mistake it for a dslr camera bag. The built is sturdy and I have to admit that it took some hits and fell while I was trying to fly it (INDOORS) with the sensors off. The propellers literally made holes in the wall when the drone hit it and were undamaged. The gumball seems very sensitive and woobly when the drone is turned off so I can't emphasize enough on how important it is to use the shield provided when the drone is not in use. Software: EVO's software is very easy to learn and master, but remember that practice is very very important with any drone because aside from damaging your drone, it might cause serious damage if it hits people or property. The remote controller is enough to use the drone but you will need the Autel explorer app to unlock all features and customize your flying experience. The video quality is mind blowing @4K with 60 fps. Image quality is great as you might expect as well with available filters to use for both modes. One of the best things is that the drone is not locked by Geo fencing, so it can literally fly anywhere, but be sure to comply AND register your drone with the FAA. Its takes 5 minutes and costs $5 to register your drone for 3 years. I also liked that the drone has a novice mode that you can activate if this is your first drone or if you are still practicing. The novice mode limits the speed to 8 miles per hour, as well as hight and it won't let you turn the censors off. Cons: Battery life sucks! Its no where near to the advertised 30 minutes, and if you live in the DMV area like I do where you can't fly the drone unless you drive at least an hour and a half to be out of a no fly zone ( you also cant fly drones in any national park). It will be really hard to enjoy the experience with 20 minutes flight time and 3 hours plus of travelling. So I highly recommend buying another battery for your drone. This drone, like most high end drones only records video feed, no audio, so you will need a video editor for converting and adding a video footage for playback. The drone should have came with an extra 4 pairs of propellers at least. When you drop $1000 for a drone, this should be a no brainer. The drone and the remote controller should have came with a USB type C instead of using a regular USB port. The EVO does not have obstacle avoidance when flying in reverse. Aside from a warning there is nothing else. Follow me feature still needs work but I am sure it will be better with future software updates. Conclusion: The EVO is a great drone that can last for years and has great potential. The price seems about right but with established competition coming out with 2 new drones around the same price, I don't know if this drone is going to be the go to for everyone. But I must say that AUTEL EVO's after sale service is located in the US and this is a huge plus compared to the competition which is very week in this department.

This is my first drone, so unlike others who have previous experience in this product space, my review comes from the perspective of a novice. That said, the first thing I noticed is that the EVO feels really well made. You don't get the sense that it will fall apart if you cause a poor landing. The unit comes with a soft carrying case, plus some spare replacement blades and an installed 32GB SD card. All cables necessary to charge both EVO and Controller simultaneously are included. Right out of the box, the EVO is set to record video at 4k. I flew the unit a few times while recording only to find that one flight that was less than 10 minutes generated a 1gb+ video file. That's way too big in my opinion, so I dropped the video resolution down to keep the file sizes in check. Video recordings on the EVO are extremely stable and lack any sense of jitter during flight. From my perspective, top-notch. You can also snap a picture while the EVO is recording video, and those pictures came out looking great, too. Recharging the batteries of the controller and drone take as long as 180 minutes and 80 minutes, respectively, depending on how depleted the batteries are. It's a good idea to get some spare batteries and to have them fully charged if you plan on using the EVO for more than 30 minutes - which is how long one fully charged battery is supposed to last. Not sure if 30 minutes will prove accurate in the long run. The controller has a bracket for holding your cell phone, plus cables that provide a phone-to-controller connection that fit most (if not all) non-iPhone-type phones. iPhone users will likely have to provide their own cable since one was not included. The EVO's documentation indicates that it has a range of over 4 miles, which I couldn't confirm. We live in an area surrounded by trees, so the EVO's obstacle avoidance features were tested to the max. Fortunately, all ended well. The controller and phone app are stocked with a ton of features, way too many to list here. I spent most of my time controlling the unit manually to see how the EVO would react with the many trees we have on our property. Again, I didn't encounter any problems during these flights. I thought the Orbit feature - which had the EVO circling above our house while video recording - was very cool. I plan on trying the Waypoint and the Follow features on an upcoming vacation where trees and other obstacles are at a minimum. Being a novice when it comes to drones, I can't say if this unit will ultimately unseat any of the big players in this market space or not. All I know is that the EVO is a lot of fun and easy to use, it takes outstanding photos and videos, and has exceeded my expectations.

This is my third drone and by far the best I have owned. The EVO weighs not quite (2 pounds) and includes a carrying case along with a 32 GB microSD card. The microSD card is protected by a hatch cover on the right side of the aircraft and is easy to get to. The EVO is very solid and well-made. Setup is simple. If you live in the US I encourage you to use the smartphone app B4UFLY for rules and restrictions in the airspace. The charger can charge both the drone and the controller batteries simultaneously. Flight Performance is good and helps in the video capture side of things. My battery life has been between 20-30 minutes. My radio range is about one mile in the city - needs to stay within eyesight based on current regulations. I really like the Anti-Collision System. Several warnings appear on the video feed as it approaches an obstacle and past a certain point it will refuse to move forward if you are on collision course. The image quality is quite good. The camera has a reasonable dynamic range and low-light sensitivity. If needed there are neutral density filters that can be purchased. The design of the controller is similar to many drone and video game controllers with a very nice feature - the controller can display the video without the need of a smartphone thereby reducing potential problems.

==== Summary ==== The Autel Evo is an impressive drone that takes fantastic videos & pictures. It's very easy to fly with its excellent controller & safety features, flight is stable & smooth, and comes with many cool flight modes. The fit-and-finish is excellent ensuring long-term durability. Autel has created a very compelling & quality drone and app ecosystem. I love it~! @@@@@ Pros: -Good-looking design with nice colors. -Quick & responsive flyer. -Easy to control. -Remote is well-designed & has a 330-nit 3.3" OLED screen. -Can fly without a smartphone & still have a live video feed. -UHD 4K video at 60FPS looks stunning. -3-axis stabilized gimbal = stable videos and pictures. -Obstacle avoidance (front, rear, & below). -Comes with a nice carrying case. -"Intelligent Flight" modes are cool, such as Dynamic Track and Orbit. -No "No-Fly Zone" restrictions & forced firmware updates. -Charger charges the drone & the controller at the same time. -No privacy & security scandals like Da-Jiang Innovations (DJI) drones. @@@@@ Cons: -The drone is a bit sensitive to magnetic interference. -No automatic obstacle avoidance function when flying in reverse (just a warning). -Too easy to accidentally press the buttons on the back of the controller. ==== Design & Function ==== The Autel Evo drone is my first drone experience & I love it. Whether it's folded up into its compact travel form or stretched out for flying, I think it looks really cool with its striking color combo of glossy red orange with matte black color. Build-quality & build-material of the Evo are top-notch as well. The drone has been constructed with tight tolerances & all the seams and lines are clean and even. In other words, it has excellent fit-and-finish in a durable package. It's kind of embarrassing to admit but my first two flights ended in a crash - first inside the house & once outside during nighttime (not recommended by Autel). The Evo survived both crashes with no damages except some cosmetic scruff marks and a bruise to my pride. :P Handling the Evo is a simple & frustration-free affair. The folding front & rear arms actuate smoothly and the propellers fold and tuck away neatly. Gripping & carrying around the Evo one-handed is effortless thanks to its light weight and folded-up portability. The LED lights on the legs provide a quick visual status & orientation of the Evo. As for buttons & ports, there is a microUSB port (for file transfer) & a controller pairing button hidden underneath a plastic flap right below the two rear IR sensors. On the battery itself, you have a Power On button as well as a concave button you depress to slide off the battery from the Evo. Finally, there is a microSD slot on the right side of the Evo underneath a pull-back tab. Besides the drone and the controller, Autel also includes a carrying case with an adjustable shoulder strap that has ample room for the drone, the controller, extra batteries, and cables. Although the Evo is my first drone, I can still tell that it's a highly-crafted machine that has been meticulously designed with good durability in mind. It's stylish, very easy to handle and fly, and all the parts work harmoniously. 10 out of 10. ==== Controlling the Evo ==== The Evo can be flown in two ways - with just the remote controller & the embedded 3.3" live video screen or with the controller paired with a smartphone via a cable. The controller is quite a remarkable. The handles fold in and out smoothly from the body and is comfortable to hold. The smartphone holder can easily accommodate larger smartphones such as my Samsung Galaxy S9+ housed inside a case with its grippy rubber and secure clamping force. My S9+ was never once in danger of accidentally falling or popping out. There are many buttons on the controller that make it easy to operate the Evo. The four main ones are the "Take Off/Land" button, "Power On/Off" button, "Pause aircraft" button, and the "Hold to Start Go Home" button. On the shoulders are the "Record video," "Take photo," and "Screen navigation (DISP)" buttons as well as two Dial Switches - one switch controls the gimbal pitch/angle & the other is used to scroll through Settings & to select your choices by pressing down on the switch. On the back of the controller are the "A" and "B" buttons that are currently used to set Waypoints inside the Autel Explorer app. Per Autel, they will be customizable in future firmware updates. Due to their location, I found myself pressing them accidentally numerous times. I'm getting better at avoiding them with each flight session but they're still kind of annoying nonetheless. On the left and right of the screen are the two controller joysticks that you use to move/fly the drone. They work great and I had no issues with them. On the top are the two antennas that neatly fold away when not in use. Then in the middle of the controller is that nice 3.3" OLED screen. It gets as bright as 330 nits and that's where you'll be viewing the Evo's "Flight Information Panel" data or a live 720P HD video feed, all without a smartphone attached. Sweet~!! The Flight Information Panel offers lots of condensed data in a straight-forward and easy-to-understand manner. It's a LOT of data but I never felt overwhelmed. By flying the Evo with just the controller, you won't be able to use the Evo's Intelligent Flight Modes (Dynamic Track, Viewpoint, Orbit, Waypoint, VR). Plus you won't have access to the more advanced drone settings. Pair up the Evo to a smartphone and launch the Autel app, however, then you'll have full access to ALL the flight modes & the advanced settings. In addition, your smartphone's display will now act as your live visual feed (1080P resolution). My phone gets much brighter than the controller screen so it was my preferred way of viewing the live feed. With that said, I think it's wonderful that Autel provides the user with such flexibility to allow flight without a smartphone and still offering a live video feed. It's a very thoughtful & brilliant design by Autel. ==== How Does It Fly? ==== The Evo is one smooth operator and it flies great~! It performs all flight maneuvers very well - smooth take-off, graceful landing, quickly making turns and orbits, speeding forward, quick reverse, etc. With the built-in safety measures augmented by sensors and obstacle avoidance, the Evo is a great drone for novices and first-time fliers such as myself. More experienced users will have a blast thanks to modes like the "Ludicrous" mode which changes the top speed of the Evo to 45 MPH. 10 out of 10. ==== Video & Photo Quality ==== I was BLOWN AWAY by the quality of the UHD 4K 60FPS videos the Evo took. I've never before seen such high-quality, well-stabilized, and splendid video from any of my tech gadgets & toys. Auto-exposure & white balance are handled very well & 4K 60FPS is simply awesome. Here are two short videos I took & uploaded to YouTube - one in a residential neighborhood with mild wind & one at the beach during windy conditions: https://youtu.be/D8uh64AebFU https://youtu.be/MsI4W0Banuc When it comes to photo quality, the Evo was pretty good as well. The 12MP 94-degree camera in Auto Mode takes good consistent pictures with good dynamic range, exposure, and contrast. For more control, Autel offers many customizable settings within Settings. Low-light scenarios introduce some granniness and noise in the pictures but that's to be expected. Still, photos came out decent and useful. Overall, I'm very satisfied and happy with both the video & photo capabilities of the Evo. 10 out of 10~!! ==== Autel Explorer App & Intelligent Flight Modes ==== The Autel Explorer app is well-designed, comprehensive, and simple to use. Besides granting the user access to ALL the drone settings & the special Flight Modes, firmware updates are handled here as well. Inside Settings, there are 8 main entries on the left column & inside the "Intelligent Flight" menu, there are 6 modes to choose from - Camera (default startup mode), Dynamic Track (Evo follows a subject), Viewpoint (Evo flies toward a subject), Orbit (Evo flies in a circular pattern around a subject), Waypoint (Evo flies a predefined flight path), and VR (Virtual Reality goggles). I had lots of fun playing around with all the special flight modes (except for VR) & they all worked very well as intended. My favorite one is Dynamic Track, which I used often to chase around my hyper toddler. ==== Wish List ==== I'm very happy with the Evo but I wish it could do a little bit more. The highest on my list is for the automatic obstacle avoidance system to work while the Evo is flying in reverse. Please, Autel, include this feature in an upcoming firmware update~! Second, I wish it was less sensitive to magnetic interference. At times, the Evo's compass had to be recalibrated because I put the Evo down on some concrete (such as my driveway) & the metal inside caused a calibration error. Third, I wish the Waypoint Flight Mode will let me select flight points on the map first then having the Evo fly toward them instead of me having to fly the Evo to each Waypoint first. ==== Conclusion ==== Flying around in the skies while recording videos and taking pictures with the Autel Evo has been a highly fun and joyful experience, filling me up with child-like wonder and delight. I now have an additional tool to capture wonderful memories of my family and pets. I highly recommend the Evo to everyone for its user-friendly design & flight control, excellent build quality, and all the fun flight modes & safety features that work harmoniously together. Autel has engineered a high-quality drone & app ecosystem and I look forward to their future endeavors and products.

My son and I love this EVO drone. I have been flying a XIRO Xplorer for the last year and when I compare the two, it isn't even close. To begin the EVO is a much sturdier drone. If you have been flying drones for a while, this isn't as important, but if you are fairly new with drones, then I would highly consider this. When I first started flying the XIRO, my son and I had some crashes and got some pretty good knicks on the XIRO. Now that we have good flying experience, we rarely crash, but if that happened with the EVO, I can tell that it would take a pretty good crash to damage it. If you are just starting out with the EVO, I would stick to the controller they provide, but if you are more experienced, then definitely download their app and take control with your phone. I really like that you have those two options. The other aspect of this EVO that really stood out, was the video quality. The video quality that I can get from this EVO is ten times better than the XIRO. The EVO will give you a good solid 20 minutes of fly time and will alert you when it is down to less than 5 minutes of battery to ensure to bring it back home with plenty of time. It only takes about an hour and half to fully recharge the drone battery. The controller will last charged for much longer. If you are a novice flyer, I like that it has object avoidance going forward and that you can bring it back home with the touch of a button. The controller itself has many buttons which sometimes can be accidentally pressed if you aren't careful, that is why I prefer to use my phone to fly the EVO. If you are looking for a good solid drone that will take beautiful pictures and video, I would highly recommend this EVO from Autel.

This drone is a bit challenging to setup but works well once it is done. Out of the box, it needed a firmware upgrade to fix the gimbal calibration. The horizon was constantly angled but Autel support advised to do some additional gimbal adjustments in flight via the phone app and it was fixed. Now, it is working well. The images are amazing and the camera stability for videos is spectacular as long as I do not do any crazy maneuvers. Flight time on one battery is about twenty-seven minutes on a full charge. However, the drone will want to return home at the first low battery indication when around five minutes are left or when it knows it is about to reach a point of no return. If the low battery indicator is ignored, it will land at its current position once the battery reaches the critical level. This is fine as long as it is not flying over water or somewhere inaccessible. I love the controller! It is small and compact when not in use but unfolds into a comfortable size. The controls are well placed and extremely responsive. The display is easy to read. If a phone is not used, the display has all data on one screen. However, it is best to connect a smartphone so the controller screen is dedicated to flight data and the phone screen can be dedicated to the camera display and controls. While the drone battery runs down as expected, the controller battery has a surprisingly high capacity. After at least five full flights / drone battery discharges, the controller battery is still close to 80%. I really have no idea how long it is going to take before it needs to be charged. It is also important to note that the live image quality and speed coming from the drone to the smartphone via the controller is excellent. There is little to no visible latency between the camera and the screen. When it comes to flying, Autel has a series of videos online to teach anyone how to fly. While this drone is by no means a toy, it is easy enough for a responsible child to fly it. I would say that this drone is more of a camera with a drone attached to it than a drone with a camera attached to it. I would not use it to do tricks or show off. Instead, I would use it to create spectacular aerial images and videos. In many cases, the drone will protect itself from damage. If it senses obstacles in front, behind, or below, it will reduce speed in that direction to avoid a crash. The only time this becomes annoying is when the landing zone is close to a large obstacle. In one case, it wanted to land on water because I was standing too close to a wall. I learned to come in sideways to land when near an obstacle so the sensors do not see it. Obviously, the pilot needs experience flying before landing in tight spaces. They recommend starting in an open field. However, anyone with a little experience should be comfortable flying after watching the manufacturer's videos and completing a few practice flights. Extremely bright LED lights are located on all four arms of the drone. They are highly visible even in the middle of the day. Solid red LED's are usually showing on the front arms and flashing green is the most common color on the rear arms. This indicates that all systems are normal and the drone has a good GPS signal from enough satellites to maintain proper control. Other colors indicate various details like low battery, poor GPS signal, loss of signal from the controller, or other faults. Obviously, the controller will advise the pilot of these as well, but it is nice to know these basic details without having to take eyes off the drone. The motors are surprisingly quiet. At idle, the blades can be heard spinning but they are barely audible. At takeoff, the sound level increases but it is still quieter than expected. In flight, it is louder when moving and fairly quiet when hovering unless it is fighting a strong wind. There are some videos online demonstrating how much quieter it is compared to other models on the market. For storage, the drone came with a 32 GB microSD card. I pop it out and plug it into my computer directly since that is ultimately where I want the data. It is also possible to download the images from the drone to the smartphone via the controller and app. The data transfer rate is fast for images. I have not tried yet for video. Overall, I am happy. This does what it is made to do and it does it well. Autel did not seem to cut corners. They made a solid piece of hardware. It had a software bug, but it is fixed with the firmware updates. The one caveat is that anyone using this drone should plan to use a smartphone with it anytime they are flying. While it is possible to fly without a phone, it is not really intended to work that way.

Autel EVO is my first drone, so you can say that I am a beginner/newbie when it comes to drones. Earlier, I have played around a bit with my friends' drones and I can say that this is the best flight experience I have had so far. Here are my observations after spending 2 weeks and multiple flights with EVO. 1. It is super easy to control and it holds pretty well even in the windy conditions. 2. The initial setup is very simple. The bag that came with the drone is great addition as you can fit all the things in a compact bag. To that point, the way this drone and the controller fold is really good. You can easily throw them in your back pack if you don't want to carry the additional bag. 3. The video and the photo quality is very good. There are a number of drones with 4K capabilities in the market but very few with 60 fps. 4. The 3-axis gimbal gives the videos and photos amazing stability and even in the windy conditions you won't notice any jitters. 5. The controller is nicely designed too. The display on the controller is extremely sharp and bright even in the bright sunlight. It also has a holder to attach your smartphone with it. It holds my Samsung Galaxy S9+ well. The Autel explorer app is good and the controller syncs up with the phone instantly (using the provided cables). They have provided a micro-USB as well as USB-C cable which is great given the fact that a number of newer smartphones have USB-C port (as opposed to micro USB) 6. My 10 year old son was able to fly and control drones without any issues and was excited as me :) 7. The battery is good. I usually get 25-35 minutes of flight time after a full charge. Even the charger is designed well as it can be used to charge both the drone as well as controller at the same time. 8. As I mentioned above, the screen on the controller is excellent and you can fly the drone even without the smartphone. It came handy once when my smartphone was really low on battery. Overall, it is a great drone. So far, I have not come across any flaws or pain points. The price is a bit on the higher side but it is a premium drone and packs a lot of features. In fact, if you consider the other premium drones with these kind of features, you will find that the price of this drone is actually on the lower side. So, if you are a newbie like me or a drone enthusiast, you will love this drone. Go get it!

As an FAA part 107 licensed pilot and an owner of several drones, I was very interested to get my hands on the AUTEL EVO. Competition for "the best selling drone company" is very needed in my opinion. With its folding capability and compact shape, I would say that this drone has indeed been released for direct competition. Again, this is good for everyone. These companies will now strive to outdo each-other and therefore the technology will undoubtedly become better, faster. Not to mention it's better for consumer prices. It's a win, win! After dinking around with this drone for a little while now, I can say that I would easily recommend the EVO to anyone looking for a portable drone that shoots 4K. Sometimes lugging around a bigger drone with a case isn't always feasible, but tossing this in your camera bag or using the bag that they give you with the drone, makes it an easy decision to keep this with you pretty much at all times. Obviously image quality is a very big deal when considering any camera gear. The sensor in this unit's no slouch and captures rich, detailed images in good light. I do highly recommend purchasing a set of ND filters before trying to capture any daytime footage. When shooting at the correct frame rate, you'll definitely need them in any bright condition. That said, the reason I docked one star is that since it's a smaller sensor (Sony 12MP CMOS ? .3"), the low light capability will suffer. It'sn't horrible, but it could be better. While this is true among digital cameras of all kinds, it defeats the purpose of me actually using it in low light (dusk / dawn) conditions. So again, if you are shooting with ND filters at the correct frame rate, during lit daytime conditions, you'll be satisfied with this unit. Just try to keep your ISO at 100 as much as possible. The controller and EVO app are really done well. The main controller screen is extremely sharp. The text is so sharp that it's like looking at a retina display. It even works well in bright sunlight. I am using a Note 8 with Android and the app works flawlessly paired with the remote screen. Camera settings are extremely easy to change on the fly. A big bonus over other manufacturers. There is an easy to navigate main bar at the bottom of the app screen that lets you control all camera settings easily with swipes left and right. Another very cool feature of the app software is that it lets you set up a time-lapse to take photos automatically at set intervals as you are shooting your video. Awesome feature! Another really cool feature is the user selectable live video feed. This means you can switch the live video feed between either your device or the remote itself. Very cool if you do not have a device with you, or say your battery is depleted on your phone. The in-flight handling of this unit's really, really nice. So far, I have experienced very smooth flight and tracking of subjects. The unit's also very quiet compared to some of my other drones which is great news. As a bonus, if you are a newb, you can set this up in beginner mode which will help you learn how to fly properly before you turn it off and go into normal mode. Beginner mode keeps the drone at a lower altitude and a little closer to your position. That paired with the obstacle avoidance makes this a very good choice for said beginners. Battery life is also excellent. I have been getting about 25 to 30 minutes per flight which is great. When you are up in the air flying 25 to 30 minutes feels like an eternity. I would also recommend buying one or two extra batteries so you can get all of the footage needed no matter where you are and without having to recharge in the field. Another tip that I can give is to plan your flight when you arrive at your destination to save battery time and drain. If you know what you want to capture before you take off (instead of flying around aimlessly), your footage will be much better when you get back to your editing station. Keep in mind that if you shoot everything in 4K resolution, you'll need a very good video editing computer to edit your footage smoothly. If you do not own a high-end computer system, I would recommend that you create proxies of your files before editing. Actually, I would recommend creating proxies even if you do have a high-end system. It makes editing your video and scrubbing through clips like butter. All in all, this is a solid effort from Autel Robotics. With its portability and excellent remote / app, not to mention friendly price point, you really can't go wrong with this drone. Go get yours now! Lastly, being an FAA part 107 licensed pilot, it's my duty to highly recommend that everyone interested in becoming a pilot (not just hobbyists) to take the course, obtain the license, and learn how to fly safely. This will save you possible disaster circumstances if you are flying in the wrong area (airspace) which I am sure a lot of people do because they simply do not know any better. There are several courses online that you can take to help you study for and pass the test. If you decide to go this route, once you complete the course and receive your license, you'll understand exactly what I mean by all of this. Airspace is a tricky thing and warrants you having extensive knowledge on how to navigate it legally, properly, and safely. Studying for the Part 107 isn't only fun but very interesting and will teach you everything you need to know to put yourself in the right situation every time. Do yourself the favor. Fly safe, fly smart, and have fun!

    Future evolution of drones

I'm really thrilled on all the capabilities that the Autel EVO offer. I attached 2 photos but I would of like to have been able to attach more. My initial process: I did the unboxing and the EVO was packed with care. To my surprise a shoulder bag was included as a bonus. After removing everything I almost missed the quick setup and manual box because it was on the very bottom which blended in with the interior of the EVO box. This is a premium drone with a bigger but fair price tag so I read every single line of the manual to make sure I know important things about it. When I got to the charging section I decided to start the charging before I continued my reading. FYI you need to remove the battery from the drone before charging. Pushing the button on top of the drone while sliding the battery does the trick to remove the battery. What's great about the charger is it charges both the drone EVO battery and remote simultaneously in 3 hours. To be clear the instructions indicates the drone charges fully in 1 hour and the remote controller is fully charged in 3 hours but my initial charge was faster. Register: It was always recommended to me to register drones https://faadronezone.faa.gov/#/ so I would like to extend the recommend this to all drone owners. It took me 5 minutes and cost me $5 for 3 years registration. App: To get the full experience I decided to download the "Autel Explorer" app. It has easy instructions to pair your phone, drone and remote controller to each other. Design: The EVO design is a few steps towards the future and it looks great. I was not too sure about the color but the more I look at it and being able to spot it in the air made me fall in love with the orange/black color. This Autel EVO drone arms folds which makes very easy to pack up and take with you to anywhere you want to explore without taking much space. Picking up the drone and unfolding the arms I can feel the quality. It has many sensors that helps a beginner and even a pro be a better pilot. A 4K camera that has a 3 axis gimbal assures that I have clear and stable image during every flight I take with my EVO. Remote controller: I think I'm more hooked on the design of this remote because it looks like a gaming controller with a 3.3 inch OLED screen so I can clearly see what my EVO see in HD. Just like the EVO the remote controller allows you to fold the handles to make it easier to hold or pack to transport. The EVO remote have a lot of features and since there are a lot I will only list a few. I can take pictures or videos with a touch of a button. Easy land or take off with auto pilot, return home with auto pilot, it allows you to turn sensors on or off, GPS and plenty of indicators of your drone and remote controller health, it has a beginner mode so it reduces the speed and height for novice pilots or at least until you get the hang of the controls. Using the remote control and your phone together gives you the most option to take advantage of the many advance features. Flight performance: Flying the EVO is easy if you have some experience. I find it so much easier learning and flying the EVO after using another top drone company. I had plenty of space around me because I drove to a nearby field. I had room for error and was expecting a few crashes but luckily I did not have any crashes yet. I want to try the ludicrous mode but I want to give myself more time to get really familiar with the controls to handle the EVO safely at faster speeds. Something that I found most interesting was the dynamic track because it follows around a subject and it's accurate. Take off and landing can always be easy if you use auto pilot but with practice it's also easy to do it on your own. My final thoughts: At the end of the day I think this EVO drone is packed with much more features than we are used to in a consumer level drone. I like that firmware updates will be available to help with bugs or even add new features to the EVO. I would of prefer that the EVO had a longer battery life after a full charge so I can have more time and more fun. I think 1 and a 1/2 hours to fully charge the EVO and only get 30 minutes of flight is not the right balance. Knowing this I plan on buying a spare battery but I want to wait to see if a bigger battery that holds a longer charge will soon be available. That's my only negative feedback about the EVO and I know I will enjoy it the more I use it. I'm looking forward into taking beautiful pictures and videos using my EVO when I take future vacations.

The packaging was impressive right out of the box, sturdy & individual boxes for everything. We received a very nice travel bag with it which looks like a camera bag. As far as the drone, it is very sturdy, having crashed it a few times, it held up well. Set up was easy and its easy to use. I flew it in the daylight & was impressed at how quickly it takes off & also how high it goes, it was a fairly windy day & it didn't affect the flight at all. I took video & a few pictures which you can take right on the controller, I also downloaded the app & took video & pictures with that too. I recommend the app because you can watch where you are flying & it also warns you when objects are close by. You do have to have a USB connected to your phone & the controller so I suggest a short cable. I used an iPhone 8 & it fit in the holder with the case on, iPhone 8+ only fit without the case. You can also connect an iPad. It was a cloudy day so the pictures were ok, I also flew it at dusk & the pictures were as expected, just ok. I love quality camera pics so I'm not big on cell phone pics, so I'd've to say the quality of these pics just didn't do it for me. I will try on a sunny day to see if they're any better, this would be great for sunsets. You can use a mini sd card but I wasn't able to save the video or photos to my phone which I'd've liked to do. The gimbel is adjustable. The battery charges pretty quickly & the box says flying time is 30 minutes, I'd say more like 20. The controller has a very bright OLED screen. This is very enjoyable to play with, I can't wait to use it more & find out all it can do.
