I love this Drone! It's super easy to fly, it takes amazing video too. The gimbal for the camera is so stable that if I let the drone hover while taking video, it actually looks like a still photograph. There's no shaking, wobbling, or stutter. The video is nice and vivid with everything nicely in focus. I can't wait till the leaves start changing color so I can take my drone up in the mountains and video the forest. I never thought that just flying around taking pictures and video could be so much fun.

The Evo video quality exceeds that of the Mavic Pro and in a similar impact package. Autel has excellent customer service and the Evo isn't hamstrung by no fly zones like DJI products. Use wisely.

The video on this drone is great compared to the mavic pro and air. The gimbal is a little weak and I don,t care for the gimbal cover . I love the app and no flight restrictions. The mavic air and pro fly better both are more solid but this drone is a great value if you can get it with the extra batteries and bag deal which I missed out on now its back on .

I love gadgets and I'm getting close to retirement so what better than a drone. This is my second Autel drone. I love the quality...and the color's cool too, but the best part is the awesome videos and pictures it takes. Top shelf.

This is my third drone and by far the best I have owned. The EVO weighs not quite (2 pounds) and includes a carrying case along with a 32 GB microSD card. The microSD card is protected by a hatch cover on the right side of the aircraft and is easy to get to. The EVO is very solid and well-made. Setup is simple. If you live in the US I encourage you to use the smartphone app B4UFLY for rules and restrictions in the airspace. The charger can charge both the drone and the controller batteries simultaneously. Flight Performance is good and helps in the video capture side of things. My battery life has been between 20-30 minutes. My radio range is about one mile in the city - needs to stay within eyesight based on current regulations. I really like the Anti-Collision System. Several warnings appear on the video feed as it approaches an obstacle and past a certain point it will refuse to move forward if you are on collision course. The image quality is quite good. The camera has a reasonable dynamic range and low-light sensitivity. If needed there are neutral density filters that can be purchased. The design of the controller is similar to many drone and video game controllers with a very nice feature - the controller can display the video without the need of a smartphone thereby reducing potential problems.

I want to qualify this review by saying that this is my first experience with a drone - so every bit of that learning curve associated with learning and piloting a completely new device is very present here. However, I've watched several videos about the Evo, including its initial rollout a few months ago, and have seen quite a bit about its initial strengths and weaknesses and were able to test those things over the last several days. The first thing to know is that the Autel Evo comes up right at the top end of consumer-grade drone budgets. It's expensive, but I think it justifies its price tag well. It boasts a longer flight time (30 minutes, which held up somewhere around 27-28 in real world testing), 4K video, which I'll talk about a little later, a dedicated remote control that can connect to your phone as a second display, and multiple tracking modes and programmable route options. These things all work as advertised, and they are impressive. Learning to pilot these things is relatively easy, and I assume that the experience is similar to piloting other drones. In spite of my (very bad) piloting skills, the video produced by the Evo is really, REALLY smooth. The gimble is excellent - it's so good that even with erratic shakes from side to side, the video looks like all my shakes were intentional. In very rare instances and with the craziest shakes, you can sometimes see the edge of the front propellers in the edge of the frame, but it didn't happen often enough to bother me, and became much less likely to occur after I'd flown the drone for several days. The tracking mechanism and route programming, at least from what I can see, requires a phone to use, as the included remote does not offer a touchscreen interface. However, they work extremely well and smoothly and open up a ton of possibilities for filming. The drone intelligently avoids obstacles - I had seen in earlier reviews that their obstacle detection suffered from rear detection. This was not the case with me. I had the drone follow me as I walked toward it and it successfully detected a tree behind it and avoided it. This was very impressive! The one thing I feel I can speak to well is the video quality. I love photography, and the prospect of shooting beautiful, cinematic video, is extremely exciting to me. The video quality is sharp and the optical stabilization is....just perfect. As mentioned above, watching your footage back is pretty thrilling. It's very crisp. I didn'tice that the highlights get easily blown out in direct sunlight, which can annoy some people who are looking to shoot extremely moody sunlit video. Colors also seem a little flat, if not oversaturated. This is definitely a drone in which you will want to put your footage through some kind of postprocessing in Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro X. Having said that, though, the quality is so, so good. There's a lot you can do with this drone. I'd absolutely recommend it and can't wait to take it everywhere I go.

This is my first drone, so unlike others who have previous experience in this product space, my review comes from the perspective of a novice. That said, the first thing I noticed is that the EVO feels really well made. You don't get the sense that it will fall apart if you cause a poor landing. The unit comes with a soft carrying case, plus some spare replacement blades and an installed 32GB SD card. All cables necessary to charge both EVO and Controller simultaneously are included. Right out of the box, the EVO is set to record video at 4k. I flew the unit a few times while recording only to find that one flight that was less than 10 minutes generated a 1gb+ video file. That's way too big in my opinion, so I dropped the video resolution down to keep the file sizes in check. Video recordings on the EVO are extremely stable and lack any sense of jitter during flight. From my perspective, top-notch. You can also snap a picture while the EVO is recording video, and those pictures came out looking great, too. Recharging the batteries of the controller and drone take as long as 180 minutes and 80 minutes, respectively, depending on how depleted the batteries are. It's a good idea to get some spare batteries and to have them fully charged if you plan on using the EVO for more than 30 minutes - which is how long one fully charged battery is supposed to last. Not sure if 30 minutes will prove accurate in the long run. The controller has a bracket for holding your cell phone, plus cables that provide a phone-to-controller connection that fit most (if not all) non-iPhone-type phones. iPhone users will likely have to provide their own cable since one was not included. The EVO's documentation indicates that it has a range of over 4 miles, which I couldn't confirm. We live in an area surrounded by trees, so the EVO's obstacle avoidance features were tested to the max. Fortunately, all ended well. The controller and phone app are stocked with a ton of features, way too many to list here. I spent most of my time controlling the unit manually to see how the EVO would react with the many trees we have on our property. Again, I didn't encounter any problems during these flights. I thought the Orbit feature - which had the EVO circling above our house while video recording - was very cool. I plan on trying the Waypoint and the Follow features on an upcoming vacation where trees and other obstacles are at a minimum. Being a novice when it comes to drones, I can't say if this unit will ultimately unseat any of the big players in this market space or not. All I know is that the EVO is a lot of fun and easy to use, it takes outstanding photos and videos, and has exceeded my expectations.

The Autel Robotics Evo is a well thought out drone with only minor drawbacks. First, as far as design, it's clear from the design that this drone hearkens to the design and layout of the other popular drone manufacturer. It has similar folding arms, a similar battery location and configuration, similar way the propellers attach to the arms, and even a similar camera gimbal. Because of this it's impossible to talk about the Evo without drawing some comparison with the other. There are, however, some unique aspects to this drone. First, the remote is a bit different, with the most glaring difference being that the remote has a 3" color OLED screen which makes need of a phone having to be connected completely optional, and really only required if you need functions offered by the Autel Explorer app. On the point of the App, I have to say it's dramatically easier to use than the app over the other brand. The options are more easily found and understood and less buried in layers of menus. That'sn't to say it's perfect however, as it's missing certain features, such as streaming capabilities, of which it has none. It also does not appear to have a natively stitched 360' picture mode. There's a slight annoyance when charging the remote a as it tends to turn on the built-in fan to keep the battery cool while charging. Being that the fan is small it tends to be a high pitched whine, and it'sn't terribly quiet. When using the remote outdoors this isn't much of a problem, but indoors while charging is a bit bothersome. Next, the flight of the drone itself is remarkably stable and smooth. I would argue that it was less prone to leap to new positions whether moving side to side or rotating when compared to the competition. This makes for a far more enjoyable viewing experience when watching the video recording back. The video quality itself is quite good, as are the pictures, however it seems to lean towards a blue shift in very bright situations. Speaking of bright situations, the 'auto' mode does not handle them well and I had to switch to manual mode and adjust the shutter speed in order to get both reasonable stills and video. All in all, I would say that this is a worthy competitor in the rapidly expanding consumer drone market with only minor caveats.

BEST DRONE FOR THE SIZE AND FEATURES

I have owned many drones before both small and large. I am extremely glad to have discovered the Autel Evo drone. The one problem with many drones of the past is how large and bulky they are. Most people want to take their drone with them everywhere they go to capture memories. If you must carry around a large bag full of a large drone and other parts, then this can be complicated. This drone is Autel's solution to this problem. It takes a 4k camera, long batter life, high speeds, and long range and packs it into a foldable small package that you can easily through into any bag along side your other gear. This drone only comes in one color which is orange, but I feel it is very fitting and looks amazing when zipping through the air. Starting with the camera, this drone is packed with a very nice 4k camera that allows for ultra-high definition videos. One thing that Autel did very good was designing the gimble. A lot of the smaller compact drones on the market are not able to pack a great gimble. This gimble feels both sturdy and it produce very stable video even under high wind. This drone is packed with obstacle avoidance system. It works well and can detect and maneuver around obstacles. The only downfall to this system that I have found is rear detection. It will detect something is there, but it will not stop. It is possible this can be fixed with a hardware update. When high speed mode is enabled, obstacle avoidance will still alert you, but the drone will not stop from crashing into something. Overall the obstacle avoidance that it does have is much better than most other drones. I was incredibly impressed with how stable the drone was. It was able to lock onto its location via GPS and even under high wins it held steady with no problem. The drone can be quite sluggish when ludicrous mode is not enabled but once this mode is enabled I could not believe how zippy the drone was. It could reach speeds up to 45 mph and the best part was, it was still very predictable and under control. The build quality of the drone is a lot better than I expected. I expected a light and plastic drone, but this is not the case. Although the drone is lighter than a lot of drones it feels premium. It also has a combination of both plastic and metal to give it a very premium feel over the competition. Battery life was rated at 30 minutes but actual in the air time I found to be just over 20 minutes. I do not think this a huge downfall because you can easily carry extra batteries and 20 minutes is more than enough time to be in the air. In addition, depending on how fast you are going, wind resistance, and movement drastically changed how fast the battery died. The remote control for this drone was impressive. It has a decent size screen on it that when combined with a smart phone it offers more than enough controls to get the best shots. I love how compact the controller is, but it has many buttons for easy access to things while flying. The only downfall to the controller is there was Micro USB and USB-c cables included but no iPhone cable. This is not a huge downfall, but iPhones are very popular, and it would have been a nice edition. It was interesting that the controller has fans and vents inside of it which goes to show there is most likely a lot of technology packed into the controller. For a folding and compact controller, it feels a lot better to hold in the hand than many other comparable drones. This drone is also packed with some smart features that allow for active tracking and other things that will help you autonomously get video footage. The only downfall that I have found is that you can enable a faster speed mode, but you must hunt for it in the settings. It would be nice if there was a quicker way to enable faster flights. This is not a huge downfall though because I will keep it in that mode most often. Anyone looking for a high-quality compact in size drone I would give this drone a try over some of the competition. Although the company is somewhat new to the drone business the drone is very high quality and very competitive to the competition. I highly recommend this drone for anyone who is looking to get great quality video/pictures in a small package.

    Excellent Premium Drone

The Autel EVO is an excellent premium mid-sized drone that is highly portable, easy to fly and produces fantastic video and photos. First impressions out of the box give you a sense of the premium nature of the product. The drone feels solid and well-built with a mix of plastic and metal parts. The camera gimbal, when out of the guard, will move around a lot on you, but this is the nature of a well stabilized camera. You'll appreciate this soon enough. And the remote feels solid and very comfortable in hand, without being too heavy. Initial setup is easy to complete following the included 'Quick Guide' and takes about an hour. Charging both the drone (removable battery) and the remote (fixed battery) is accomplished simultaneously with the included AC brick. After that you must update the firmware. This can be accomplished via a manual download from Autel's website (if you don't have a smartphone) or through your own smartphone connected to the remote and the 'Autel Explorer' app. A few things to note: 1) The cable included to charge the remote has a micro-USB B end on it while the remote itself has an unmarked square micro USB A port. The 2 connect fine, but cause you to second-guess if you're doing it correctly. 2) While an iPhone should work with the remote (I flew using an OG Pixel), an Apple Lightning cable to connect the 2 is not included and must be purchased separately. 3) Register your drone with the FAA. Even if you're just a hobbyist. While its charging is a good time to take care of this. The process is easily done via the FAA website. It takes just a couple of minutes and only costs $5 for 3 years. Like the initial setup, preparing to fly is similarly easy to step through. Setting up the drone, the arms are labeled clearly on how to unfold and have a solid, positive feel to them. If you're using a smartphone, connect your smartphone to the remote, power on the remote and the app launches automatically. Once both units are powered on, the remote will automatically connect to the drone and confirm its status, confirm a GPS signal, set the home point, and be ready to launch. In flight, the drone is easy to control, very responsive, and very stable, even in a moderate wind. Front facing and below obstacle avoidance work very well, though the rear obstacle avoidance is far less sensitive. Note that there is zero sensors for obstacle avoidance on the sides. Advanced flight modes such as Dynamic Track or Orbit, while not intuitive to find in the app, work very well and produce good results with minimal effort. 'Return to Home' has proven very accurate. And Flight time for me has clocked in around 22 minutes. This is a bit short of the advertised duration of 30 minutes, but could be related to environmental conditionals and/or piloting choices. Finally, the 4k camera on the EVO really is the icing on the cake. Video quality is superb with excellent detail and color representation and the image is ultra-stable thanks to the amazing gimbal. Easy access to the manual settings such as ISO or shutter speed really allow you to tailor the image to your circumstances and options such a video/photo file format (MP4, MOV, etc) are greatly appreciated. There are also filters available (ND, Polarized, etc) which are super easy to install. One other point I want to make. I needed to deal with Autel's support due to an issue I had (self-induced. not the drone's fault). The US-based support is super easy to deal with and very helpful.

Excellent Drone for a First timer

My previous experience with drones was of the smaller, less advanced type, so unboxing and powering up the Autel Evo was like preparing for my first launch into space. First off, the packaging was well thought out and easy to remove, I think the total time it took for me to have this out of the box and charging for first flight was about 5 minutes. Handling the drone itself along with the controller it's apparent that the build and design of each was thoroughly executed. The drone feels heavy and solid, sleek finishes remove any potential resistance on the body. Handling the controller for me is reminiscent of a PlayStation-like controller; it's heavy but balanced enough to alleviate any strain on holding it during flight time. However, if you are using your smartphone in tandem it might be slightly stressful depending on the model and type of phone you are using. For me it's an iPhone 7 Plus so there is some amount of strain but very minor. While on that note, if you do use an iPhone you will need to use your own lighting cable as the Evo does not include one (it does include USB-C and USB-mini). I really enjoy the compact size of both the drone and the controller, they fit easily into the carrying case and really have a small footprint so you can take the Evo anywhere. Prior to your first flight the FAA does require that the drone be registered which you can accomplish at www.faa.gov/dronezone. The registration will cost you $5 and once complete you will need to mark your drone with the assigned FAA registration number (I used a labeler). I also used an app called DroneBuddy to make sure I was out of any restricted flying zones because there is a major airport nearby, however, it's outside of 5 miles from my location so I am OK to fly. Flight operation for me was very easy to adapt to given my experience in video games, I was able to get the Evo flying seamlessly around my yard and then eventually up over the tree tops around 200 feet. At that height I was flying at about 20 MPH. Once up there I started using the camera shooting 4K videos and snapping some photos, I really can't stress enough how clear the video feed is during flight, on both the phone and the controller display. Using the Autel App I planned out a waypoint path to test GPS accuracy which I was very impressed with the results on my 2 test flights. During these auto pilot flights it's very cool to peer around with the camera. During flight ops, the Evo constantly evaluates battery consumption, taking into account environment factors such as wind that will drain the battery faster. On average you are looking at about 25-27 minutes of flight time but the main benefit of this is that the Evo will alert you of a point of no return if you fly it too far away. At that time it will initiate a return to home maneuver or allow you to manually fly back. That being said, so far my furthest flight has been about 1600 yards - just shy of a mile. At that distance there was plenty of forest between the drone and myself and it did not lose or lag the video feed. I feel confident I could have flown further. Some minor bugs I have seen so far: 1. During a long descent the Evo can become fairly unstable and sort of wobble back and forth. This does not appear to affect camera shots as the gimbal does a great job of compensating. 2. After some sharper turns and moving of the camera during flight, the horizon can be askew when you return the camera to it's level mark. It has only happened a couple times but it's noticeable. From what I have read both of these issues should be corrected with firmware updates, although the weather has been bad recently so I have not been able to fly the drone to confirm. Lastly - and this is not an issue but a recommendation - I would say that the easiest way to transfer the high-resolution video and photos off the Evo is to buy a USB Micro/Mini SD card reader. Best Buy sells one for $15 that also utilizes USB 3.0 for faster transfer. Overall I highly recommend this drone, it's extremely sharp looking and feels well built. There are enough safety mechanisms and sensors built in to allow a first time user to get up and flying. I brought this to a friends house and I may have influenced this years Christmas list.

I was very skeptical at first as to if this drone could live up to the hype. So far I am very impressed with it. The build quality feels very sturdy! The portability is excellent! The video quality of the camera is sharp and crisp with vibrant colors! GPS holds this bird rock steady! What I like most about it is the range, I have flown it out over 2 miles and had full signal strength! This is a serious competitor when it comes to the drone market! Oh and lets not forget about the 8X digital zoom! If you are in the market for this class of drone I suggest giving this one a try! I think you will be very pleased!

This is the fastest video drone, this has image stabilization Like a champ! This Drone can be flower with out a cell phone for once. Sure you only get half the speed but you get all the distance. This is the best drone I have ever had! I love the small size it folds up into. I feel far more confident Flying this drone in high winds and long distances over water then I ever have with any other drones. This is the drone to own. Get all the benifits without spending crazy money on the other guy. You know who I am talking about. This is the king of drones and I have literally taken it everywhere.

Best Buy facilitates the online ordering process via a very straightforward and user-friendly process. Kudos to Best Buy for a very enjoyable online shopping experience. My Autel Robotics EVO quadcopter arrived two days after having placed my order. Since its introduction, the EVO has received numerous firmware updates, all of which have improved the flying characteristics and stability of the aircraft, according to drone flying enthusiasts. The EVO is both a work of art and a remarkable technological achievement for Autel Robotics. The EVO is exceedingly well built. It is a pleasure to maneuver and the video is stunning, especially with the use of a quality lens filter. The remote controller's display screen is vividly colorful and very intuitive. To be sure, there will continue to be major advancements in this industry, however, the EVO should provide many hours of enjoyment both in its flying prowess and exceptional imagery. Lastly, and quite importantly, before you launch your aircraft for its maiden flight, remember to register with the FAA, become familiar with the flying rules and know how to accomplish a very thorough preflight checklist. Discipline, maturity and good judgment are essential prior to, during and after each flight. Plan your flights, know your personal limitations and respect your environment, to include current and forecast weather conditions and people and property in the vicinity of your flight. Flying, in all of its forms, is a rewarding experience, from which great pride is derived, but only when it is accomplished properly.

Summery: This is a very easy drone to fly, it looks great, it flies great, it shoots images and videos great, a good range, and speed, 2 different ways to take off, no real need for a mobile phone to operate, and NO need for mandatory updates before flying and not locked in no fly zones. Package contents: - The drone - Battery - Extra 2 propellers - 32 GB micro SD card already inserted - Remote controller with 3.3 lcd screen that allows to receive video feed. - Charger that charges both the battery and the remote control at the same time - Micro USB cable, and a USB C cable - The quick start guide and safety information Drone design and durability The drone is beautiful, sleek design that stands out with its foldable design that gives it a huge portability and can be easily stored in any backpack if you don't have or want to carry the drone bag itself which is small enough to mistake it for a dslr camera bag. The built is sturdy and I have to admit that it took some hits and fell while I was trying to fly it (INDOORS) with the sensors off. The propellers literally made holes in the wall when the drone hit it and were undamaged. The gumball seems very sensitive and woobly when the drone is turned off so I can't emphasize enough on how important it is to use the shield provided when the drone is not in use. Software: EVO's software is very easy to learn and master, but remember that practice is very very important with any drone because aside from damaging your drone, it might cause serious damage if it hits people or property. The remote controller is enough to use the drone but you will need the Autel explorer app to unlock all features and customize your flying experience. The video quality is mind blowing @4K with 60 fps. Image quality is great as you might expect as well with available filters to use for both modes. One of the best things is that the drone is not locked by Geo fencing, so it can literally fly anywhere, but be sure to comply AND register your drone with the FAA. Its takes 5 minutes and costs $5 to register your drone for 3 years. I also liked that the drone has a novice mode that you can activate if this is your first drone or if you are still practicing. The novice mode limits the speed to 8 miles per hour, as well as hight and it won't let you turn the censors off. Cons: Battery life sucks! Its no where near to the advertised 30 minutes, and if you live in the DMV area like I do where you can't fly the drone unless you drive at least an hour and a half to be out of a no fly zone ( you also cant fly drones in any national park). It will be really hard to enjoy the experience with 20 minutes flight time and 3 hours plus of travelling. So I highly recommend buying another battery for your drone. This drone, like most high end drones only records video feed, no audio, so you will need a video editor for converting and adding a video footage for playback. The drone should have came with an extra 4 pairs of propellers at least. When you drop $1000 for a drone, this should be a no brainer. The drone and the remote controller should have came with a USB type C instead of using a regular USB port. The EVO does not have obstacle avoidance when flying in reverse. Aside from a warning there is nothing else. Follow me feature still needs work but I am sure it will be better with future software updates. Conclusion: The EVO is a great drone that can last for years and has great potential. The price seems about right but with established competition coming out with 2 new drones around the same price, I don't know if this drone is going to be the go to for everyone. But I must say that AUTEL EVO's after sale service is located in the US and this is a huge plus compared to the competition which is very week in this department.

==== Summary ==== The Autel Evo is an impressive drone that takes fantastic videos & pictures. It's very easy to fly with its excellent controller & safety features, flight is stable & smooth, and comes with many cool flight modes. The fit-and-finish is excellent ensuring long-term durability. Autel has created a very compelling & quality drone and app ecosystem. I love it~! @@@@@ Pros: -Good-looking design with nice colors. -Quick & responsive flyer. -Easy to control. -Remote is well-designed & has a 330-nit 3.3" OLED screen. -Can fly without a smartphone & still have a live video feed. -UHD 4K video at 60FPS looks stunning. -3-axis stabilized gimbal = stable videos and pictures. -Obstacle avoidance (front, rear, & below). -Comes with a nice carrying case. -"Intelligent Flight" modes are cool, such as Dynamic Track and Orbit. -No "No-Fly Zone" restrictions & forced firmware updates. -Charger charges the drone & the controller at the same time. -No privacy & security scandals like Da-Jiang Innovations (DJI) drones. @@@@@ Cons: -The drone is a bit sensitive to magnetic interference. -No automatic obstacle avoidance function when flying in reverse (just a warning). -Too easy to accidentally press the buttons on the back of the controller. ==== Design & Function ==== The Autel Evo drone is my first drone experience & I love it. Whether it's folded up into its compact travel form or stretched out for flying, I think it looks really cool with its striking color combo of glossy red orange with matte black color. Build-quality & build-material of the Evo are top-notch as well. The drone has been constructed with tight tolerances & all the seams and lines are clean and even. In other words, it has excellent fit-and-finish in a durable package. It's kind of embarrassing to admit but my first two flights ended in a crash - first inside the house & once outside during nighttime (not recommended by Autel). The Evo survived both crashes with no damages except some cosmetic scruff marks and a bruise to my pride. :P Handling the Evo is a simple & frustration-free affair. The folding front & rear arms actuate smoothly and the propellers fold and tuck away neatly. Gripping & carrying around the Evo one-handed is effortless thanks to its light weight and folded-up portability. The LED lights on the legs provide a quick visual status & orientation of the Evo. As for buttons & ports, there is a microUSB port (for file transfer) & a controller pairing button hidden underneath a plastic flap right below the two rear IR sensors. On the battery itself, you have a Power On button as well as a concave button you depress to slide off the battery from the Evo. Finally, there is a microSD slot on the right side of the Evo underneath a pull-back tab. Besides the drone and the controller, Autel also includes a carrying case with an adjustable shoulder strap that has ample room for the drone, the controller, extra batteries, and cables. Although the Evo is my first drone, I can still tell that it's a highly-crafted machine that has been meticulously designed with good durability in mind. It's stylish, very easy to handle and fly, and all the parts work harmoniously. 10 out of 10. ==== Controlling the Evo ==== The Evo can be flown in two ways - with just the remote controller & the embedded 3.3" live video screen or with the controller paired with a smartphone via a cable. The controller is quite a remarkable. The handles fold in and out smoothly from the body and is comfortable to hold. The smartphone holder can easily accommodate larger smartphones such as my Samsung Galaxy S9+ housed inside a case with its grippy rubber and secure clamping force. My S9+ was never once in danger of accidentally falling or popping out. There are many buttons on the controller that make it easy to operate the Evo. The four main ones are the "Take Off/Land" button, "Power On/Off" button, "Pause aircraft" button, and the "Hold to Start Go Home" button. On the shoulders are the "Record video," "Take photo," and "Screen navigation (DISP)" buttons as well as two Dial Switches - one switch controls the gimbal pitch/angle & the other is used to scroll through Settings & to select your choices by pressing down on the switch. On the back of the controller are the "A" and "B" buttons that are currently used to set Waypoints inside the Autel Explorer app. Per Autel, they will be customizable in future firmware updates. Due to their location, I found myself pressing them accidentally numerous times. I'm getting better at avoiding them with each flight session but they're still kind of annoying nonetheless. On the left and right of the screen are the two controller joysticks that you use to move/fly the drone. They work great and I had no issues with them. On the top are the two antennas that neatly fold away when not in use. Then in the middle of the controller is that nice 3.3" OLED screen. It gets as bright as 330 nits and that's where you'll be viewing the Evo's "Flight Information Panel" data or a live 720P HD video feed, all without a smartphone attached. Sweet~!! The Flight Information Panel offers lots of condensed data in a straight-forward and easy-to-understand manner. It's a LOT of data but I never felt overwhelmed. By flying the Evo with just the controller, you won't be able to use the Evo's Intelligent Flight Modes (Dynamic Track, Viewpoint, Orbit, Waypoint, VR). Plus you won't have access to the more advanced drone settings. Pair up the Evo to a smartphone and launch the Autel app, however, then you'll have full access to ALL the flight modes & the advanced settings. In addition, your smartphone's display will now act as your live visual feed (1080P resolution). My phone gets much brighter than the controller screen so it was my preferred way of viewing the live feed. With that said, I think it's wonderful that Autel provides the user with such flexibility to allow flight without a smartphone and still offering a live video feed. It's a very thoughtful & brilliant design by Autel. ==== How Does It Fly? ==== The Evo is one smooth operator and it flies great~! It performs all flight maneuvers very well - smooth take-off, graceful landing, quickly making turns and orbits, speeding forward, quick reverse, etc. With the built-in safety measures augmented by sensors and obstacle avoidance, the Evo is a great drone for novices and first-time fliers such as myself. More experienced users will have a blast thanks to modes like the "Ludicrous" mode which changes the top speed of the Evo to 45 MPH. 10 out of 10. ==== Video & Photo Quality ==== I was BLOWN AWAY by the quality of the UHD 4K 60FPS videos the Evo took. I've never before seen such high-quality, well-stabilized, and splendid video from any of my tech gadgets & toys. Auto-exposure & white balance are handled very well & 4K 60FPS is simply awesome. Here are two short videos I took & uploaded to YouTube - one in a residential neighborhood with mild wind & one at the beach during windy conditions: https://youtu.be/D8uh64AebFU https://youtu.be/MsI4W0Banuc When it comes to photo quality, the Evo was pretty good as well. The 12MP 94-degree camera in Auto Mode takes good consistent pictures with good dynamic range, exposure, and contrast. For more control, Autel offers many customizable settings within Settings. Low-light scenarios introduce some granniness and noise in the pictures but that's to be expected. Still, photos came out decent and useful. Overall, I'm very satisfied and happy with both the video & photo capabilities of the Evo. 10 out of 10~!! ==== Autel Explorer App & Intelligent Flight Modes ==== The Autel Explorer app is well-designed, comprehensive, and simple to use. Besides granting the user access to ALL the drone settings & the special Flight Modes, firmware updates are handled here as well. Inside Settings, there are 8 main entries on the left column & inside the "Intelligent Flight" menu, there are 6 modes to choose from - Camera (default startup mode), Dynamic Track (Evo follows a subject), Viewpoint (Evo flies toward a subject), Orbit (Evo flies in a circular pattern around a subject), Waypoint (Evo flies a predefined flight path), and VR (Virtual Reality goggles). I had lots of fun playing around with all the special flight modes (except for VR) & they all worked very well as intended. My favorite one is Dynamic Track, which I used often to chase around my hyper toddler. ==== Wish List ==== I'm very happy with the Evo but I wish it could do a little bit more. The highest on my list is for the automatic obstacle avoidance system to work while the Evo is flying in reverse. Please, Autel, include this feature in an upcoming firmware update~! Second, I wish it was less sensitive to magnetic interference. At times, the Evo's compass had to be recalibrated because I put the Evo down on some concrete (such as my driveway) & the metal inside caused a calibration error. Third, I wish the Waypoint Flight Mode will let me select flight points on the map first then having the Evo fly toward them instead of me having to fly the Evo to each Waypoint first. ==== Conclusion ==== Flying around in the skies while recording videos and taking pictures with the Autel Evo has been a highly fun and joyful experience, filling me up with child-like wonder and delight. I now have an additional tool to capture wonderful memories of my family and pets. I highly recommend the Evo to everyone for its user-friendly design & flight control, excellent build quality, and all the fun flight modes & safety features that work harmoniously together. Autel has engineered a high-quality drone & app ecosystem and I look forward to their future endeavors and products.
