    Comfortable Headphones With Great Sound

The Beoplay H4 by Bang & Olufson is a pretty good set of bluetooth headphones with a couple of mild disappointments. I'll start with the good stuff that keep it from being a 5-star product. But the question with headphones is how they sound, and B&O does a very nice job in that regard. The sound is what B&O calls "Pure Sound" and is extremely good across all ranges, but the H4 really shine in the bass range. Fortunately, the H4 also do a very strong job with vocals and lighter instruments. If the bass weren't so rich, the rest of the range would be strong enough to shine on most headphones. The sound is clean and distinct, albeit not pristine. Overall, listening to any genre of music on the H4 is an enjoyable experience. Battery life seems very strong, which is also nice. The Beoplay app allows you to customize the sound field with a digital equalizer, but I found the basic preset to be the best overall sound, anyway. Charging is via micro USB. I'd prefer USB-C at this point, but that's not a big deal. The sturdy metal headband is covered with comfortable leather and cloth. The soft over-the-ear cups are wonderfully comfortable and well-marked to make sure you know which side is which. For a full-sized BT headphone, the H4 is pretty light. I did not worry at all about ear fatigue wearing the H4. Call quality, while not excellent, is acceptable. I'd prefer dual mics with noise cancellation, but it gets the job done. As for the few negatives: 1. The headphones would not update properly despite several attempts. 2. Initial pairing was a problem until I found a trick online that was not listed anywhere in the instructions. Basically, hold both volume buttons in for 5 seconds, and the headphone will pair easily. Prior to that, it wouldn't pair no matter what I did. As seems to be the norm these days, the included instructions were not especially helpful. 3. The power button has too many functions. Press it to turn on. Press it to bring up Google Assistant or Siri. Press it to answer a phone call. Press and hold it to shut down. Pretty much every time I try to shut down, it pops Google Assistant open on my phone in the process. 4. While the headphones twist flat to lie against your neck, the do not fold up and there is no carrying case. At this price point, I expect both. 5. There is only passive noise canceling. It would be very nice to get active noise canceling. 6. There is not a noise-canceling second mic for phone calls. 7. The package does not include a wall plug, so you either have to pirate one from somewhere else or plug it into a USB outlet. I know that sounds like I'm very critical of these headphones, but I still rate them as a 4-star product. The sound and comfort are worth 5 stars. The lack of noise canceling and storage options drop it to a four. The power button is an annoyance, but livable once you're up and running. I'd definitely buy these for the sound if they're on sale. Even if not on sale, the sound quality is strong enough that you won't regret buying them, if you can live with the minor inconveniences noted.

    They're only okay

I'm basing this review on their price. For $300, I'm expecting far above average. So let's get to the good stuff first: 1. The build quality is fantastic. 2. The lambskin ear pads are phenomenal. 3. Bluetooth connection is good. 4. B&O Play app lets you tweak the sound a little bit and I always support BT OEMs that do that. 5. 3.5mm headphone jack included. Cons 1. Super bass heavy sound. Okay for watching movies and maybe hip-hop and electric music. However, the bass is too strong for most other genres of music. Some songs had the bass so far up that it was drowning out other parts of the song. 2. The midrange is recessed. When you use the app to tweak it so there's less bass, the whole sound is empty because these cans can't do midrange well. 3. The treble is a bit too hot. It's intentional because these try to accentuate the occasional symbol in a synth song, but it's weird to hear high hats sound louder in the mix than a guitar solo on a classic rock track. 4. Bluetooth only supports SBC and AAC. For $300, aptx would've been nice. Aptx-HD would've been even better. 5. The app is sluggish. 6. The sound changing aspect of the app could've used an equalizer. These aren't very good for their price. For an extra $50, you can get the Sony WH1000XM2 with aptx, aptx-hd, aac, and sbc bluetooth along with a much more natural and clearer sound (pretty sure it comes with an app too). Its redeeming qualities -- the comfort, the build quality, and the mobile app -- simply don't do enough to justify this price tag with that sound signature. I would not recommend these to people. Demand better out of our headphone manufacturers. You can also get the wired B&O H6 for $50 less than this (on other sites, BB doesn't sell the H6) and it sounds far, far better. This is a bad deal, even for Bluetooth wireless headphone standards (where they're all overpriced). Don't buy these.

One of the most comfortable headphones after the QC35 and the sound quality is smooth and good too. But for the price point there is no carrying case or 3.5 mm jack for passive use. The package has just the headphones and charging cable which is not acceptable for the price point of $300..

    Extremely comfortable, mediocre sound quality

The H4 is probably one of the most comfortable and lightest wireless headphone I’ve tried. It looks and feels great with nice quality materials for its price range. Now for sound, it’s unfortunately tuned like a beats headphone. Bass is over boosted to were it smears into the mids and lacks detail. The mids are a bit recessed forcing me to listen at higher than normal volume to clearly hear vocals. Highs are surprisingly detailed which is a step up from a beats headphone but for myself way too much of a V shaped sound profile, with recessed mids. The H4 does have a surprisingly large sound stage for a closed headphone with a V sound profile. If you like Beats headphones these might be a great step up, if you’re looking for a more neutral sound look elsewhere.

B&O have released their latest set of headphones the Beoplay H4. If there is any take away from having and testing these headphones, there is only one word I can think of: Superior. I'm going to break this down as much as I can and tell you my fantastic experience with them. Sound Quality: This should come first and foremost before anything else in this review and I am here to tell you that it is phenomenal. The highs are so clear it blows my mind. I have never had a pair of headphones that had this level of detail to the highs while the mids are extremely solid. I also went into these headphones thinking the bass would be weak, I surely was wrong. these headphones have some of the most powerful bass I've witness. Listening to Apple Music and Spotify playlist brought a smile to my face. every beat and thump looms throughout the headphones. There is no active noise cancellation on these but does a good job blocking out the sound around you. The sound is vastly superior compared to my wife's Beats Solo 3 that's the cold hard truth. Build quality and design: They are as strong as they sound. H4's are durable yet gives a premium feel, Nothing is loose or falling apart. They say its "crafted" leather, aluminum, braided textile cord and fabric which it does feel that way which to me is good. All of the standard Bluetooth buttons are here. 3 buttons on the right ear cup audio (Play/Pause), Tracks (Next/Previous), Volume (Up/ Down), Calls (Answer/End), Voice Activation. Jakob Wagner designed these headphones which I also think he did a great job doing. They are nice and easy on the eyes (in black) without drawing attention. Battery life: I was able to go a full 3 days without charging. which total out to about 17 hours of with Bluetooth connection. more then enough for my needs. Feel/Comfort - H4 is very comfortable headphones while using. They are extremely lightweight and feels nice on the head. you can have these on all day without any feeling of discomfort. Bluetooth and Setup: Bluetooth works fine with my iPhone 7 Plus and I'm sure it works great with all other phones, Setting up the headphones is a breeze. which leads me to my next segment... Features: There isn't a lot of features on the headphone itself besides the usual buttons...but it doesn't end there. The B&O Beoplay app is where most of the features live. You can use Tonetouch to give you preset settings to your listening needs. This is where you customize the sound. Using this app also makes it easy to set up with Bluetooth. Another feature is if you have more B&O speakers in your house hold you can play music from once source on two identical speakers. The app is feature rich. Shortcomings: I only have one and that the call and mic functionality. People on the other end of the phone call say I sound like I'm underwater. I don't think the call quality is there with the mic. its just not good but its there if you need it I guess. This small gripe doesn't take away from the sound of the headphones at all. It also doesn't come with a carrying case with other headphones in this price range. Bottom line is they are solid headphones at a great price. It doesn't have no active noise cancellation but they have superior sound to them. There are only minor shortcomings but that depends on the user. The Beoplay H4 is a strong contender in the headphone market and I would recommend to anyone who is looking for luxury sound.

    Great Sound But....

First, let me say the sound on these is great- very clean and crisp with great bass and dynamic highs. For me they beat all the competition hands down when it comes to sound. They're also very comfortable. Now for the reason for the 1 star - They absolutely will not pair with my Adroid 4.4 phone (I've never had a problem pairing with any other bluetooth device with my phone.) And, their software update available doesn't list the H4 . They also would not even show up on the bluetooth device list on my Android 6.0 tablet. I read the detailed manual online and manually put them in pairing mode - no luck. I've contacted support and I'm waiting to hear from them. Meanwhile I can only enjoy them connected to my desktop Win10-they did pair with it. Also, I could go wired to my phone as they come with a 3.5mm jack accessory cable but who wants to mess with that. At this point I'm very disappointed to say the least. Don't know if I got a lemon or what.
