I had a huge problem with the coins not showing up in the game, even though I redeemed them per instructions. EA support blamed Best Buy and Steam, and it seems it is a common problem. I solved it by refunding the game on Steam, and purchasing the game through EA directly. The coins immediately showed up in-game.
I pretty terrible solution, since I prefer Steam, but it did work. So if you own the game in Steam, be warned - the coins may or may not ever show up.
