The back side only had one open port as well, and the was not convenient to reach when plugging in drives, cameras, GPS, firbit, ipod, etc. This attaches to the rear and the cord allows it to sit in the front. I can now plug in multiple items AND it also charges them

The cord was long enough so that the hub didn't dangle from the back of my computer and put tension on the connection. It was a little more than I wanted to pay but I'm happy with the product.
