Customers are saying

Customers value the HT3550 4K Home Theater Projector's exceptional picture quality, vibrant colors, and effective HDR performance, resulting in a highly immersive viewing experience. The projector's contrast is also praised for enhancing image detail. While some users note the fan is audible, the positive feedback on image quality significantly outweighs this minor drawback.

I purchased this projector after much research, and initially I loved it. But, after about 120 hours of use, the cracks started to show. The picture would start to develop a line straight down the center of the image, with one side being brighter and the other dimmer. This completely ruins the immersion of anything your watching. When researching this projector I did not come across this issue posted anywhere, but once it happened I found on Avs forums that this is a common issue. And for 1500 dollars after 120 hours this is unacceptable, some users report this after only a few hours! Apparently it is an issue with the color wheel and must be sent back for repair. I have reached out to benq and have not had a response back yet, it’s been 3 days. Like I said in the beginning, I really loved this projector, but now I’m going to be without for god knows how long if I ever get a response back. I did purchase the Best Buy coverage and may end up swapping it for an optima, to avoid the hassle of sending it back and waiting. I want to love this, but I can’t.

Pixel shifting 4k. Not native. You'll have to sirens way more for that. Not a bad projector. It was loud and I stent see a reason to jump from 1080p yet. Went back to an epson. Not bad though. Just not for me.

    Excellent Projector at price point

This is my first time purchasing a projector, but I have experience with buying other high-res TVs and computer monitors in the past. I think for the price point ($1499.99 at the time of writing this review), this projector is well worth the money. For the past week, I have been testing out the capabilities of the projector on 4k movies and games (native and streamed). I thought that the colors on the unit out of the box were superb, similar to what you would find on an IPS computer monitor that has been properly calibrated. BenQ even includes a color calibration report in the box. The sound coming from the 2 5W speakers on the projector is respectable for what they are. They won't get very loud but the quality is definitely good enough for a small outdoor venue or room. I would definitely recommend separate speakers to pair with this projector overall, though. In comparison to the ViewSonic PX-747 4K projector ($899 at the time of writing this), which I initially purchased along with this projector to see which I preferred, you will definitely benefit a lot from sticking with the BenQ. While the sharpness of the two projectors for 1080p and 4K content does not differ vastly, the contrast on the BenQ makes a world of difference. When watching darker scenes in Stranger Things and playing darker levels in Gears of War 4 on Xbox One S it was very hard to make out the finer details and certain objects in frame on the ViewSonic. I tried to adjust the brightness and contrast to fix this but colors ended up just looking too washed out. On the BenQ, however, I immediately noticed an improvement in contrast and HDR quality and had no issues with these darker scenarios. Moreover, the BenQ was much faster when powering on or switching inputs, which doesn't sound like a huge factor but definitely helps if you use it a lot. The $600 jump between projectors, if you have the money for it, is definitely worth it if you want to have a projector that you'll be happy with for long term. I will say that if you are expecting this projector to be "movie theater quality" then you may be slightly disappointed, however. The overall dynamic range is still not as good as a 4K TV at a similar price point, the projector is not bright enough for a well lit room, and the sharpness could be a little better. For something with improvements to those qualities, you'll have to upgrade even further to a better BenQ, Epson, Sony, etc projector that has native 4K. I think for most people you'd be better off spending that money on a good projector screen, projector ceiling mount, speakers, AV receiver, HDMI 2.0 HDCP 2.2 cables, 4K Bluray movies, etc to accompany this projector. You'll get rapidly diminishing returns upgrading to more expensive projectors, while this projector definitely hits the sweet spot in value (at it's very portable weighing only 9 lbs). I'd definitely recommend it!

May be I got a defective piece because one of the fan stopped working after 2 weeks. Projector would run for just 10 minutes, got too hot and shutdown. My 30 day return period expired, so I have to contact the BenQ customer service. They replaced mine with a new one. Not sure how it's going to be. Will update the review later with those details.

    Great Value 4K HDR Projector

This projector was a direct upgrade from an HT2050, which I loved, and is my first 4K projector. The sharpness of the image and richness of color continue to blow me away every time I watch it. HDR10 support makes a huge difference in picture quality. The improved contrast, due to the inclusion of a dynamic iris, is an added bonus as well! Overall, this is a significant visual upgrade from the HT2050. The HT3550 is easy to setup and requires little or no color calibration out of the box. If your head is near the projector, you will notice some fan noise. This tends to disappear once audio kicks in. At the moment, this is the 4K projector to beat for under $1500. Even when compared to projectors double the price, this projector offers compelling competition.

    Great Upgrade into 4K World!

I have had a BenQ projector (W1070) for five years. When I heard that a 4k direct replacement was coming (HT3550), I placed a pre-order as soon as available. I just received and installed today. First test was the 4k BumbleBee video. Amazing clarity and brightness with very little adjustment necessary. The dynamic iris and HDR make a significant impact on movie presentation. Second test was HD content with Pens vs Islanders first round hockey playoffs great picture, even with fast paced camera panning. So far this HT3550 is everything the W1070 was when I first purchased, but with the added 4k and dynamic Iris and HDR. Very pleased with initial experience. Highly recommend.

    Excellent value for 4K projector

This projector was a direct upgrade from an HT2050A and is my first 4K unit. I have to say, the sharpness of the image and richness of color continue to blow me away in the past few days I've had it installed. The improved contrast due to the inclusion of a dynamic iris is an added bonus as well! My Home Theater is fairly small, being 11x13ft in size, so my front row is close to my screen. This was manageable with the 2050A as long as you didn't learn forward, but literally standing a foot from my screen I can hardly make out individual pixels. I skipped the 2550 last year because it seemed like it had a little too much baggage. But just like other reviewers have stated, I think BenQ nailed it with this projector's performance at this price point and many will make the jump over to 4K. Amazon for it's part seemed completely aloof as to the stock situation with the HT3550, so fortunately I was able to acquire one elsewhere and couldn't be happier!

This projector is amazing. I have it set up in a theater room with minimal light. If I choose to raise the lights a little it does not affect the screen quality. The picture is true 4k and is pristine. No need to go to the movies.

    BenQ 3550 rocks!

I have a new basement movie theater and I just replaced my Panasonic 720P projector to this new BenQ 3550. OMG, what a great clear picture! The remote is lit and has a very simple to understand interface. The projected colors are amazing and you have a few choices of different color gammas. I am driving this projector with a ROKU 4K streaming device and the content looks incredible! I published a full video review that can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M_r6tDaBXA

    Best price to image quality.

I'm a projector novice but that being said, I have used a wide range of 1080p and 720p projectors and work in media so I have an eye for image quality. This is the best projector for colors and sharpness in this price range. The picture with the right source (I use an Apple TV 4k and Firestick 4K) will rival $5000+ projectors. The key is to have a light controlled room because its not the brightest bulb and the correct throw distance at 11ft away in a light controlled room you can have a 130" image that is so rich and deep it will transport you to your local multiplex. The projector has to be located far away from your seat because there is lots of mechanical noises as well as fan noise. Quality control has also left some user across the internet complaining about issues which largely seem to be fixed now. Those trade offs aside the image and motion are fantastic. This is a best buy.

Very dark and doesn't last long

I regret buying this. I felt like when I initially got it set up I was disappointed in the picture quality for how good the specs say it is, and thought I should have returned it then. Instead, I decided to give it a chance and tweek the settings to make the picture look ok. The image is very dark. As noted elsewhere, this is no where near 2000 lumen output. I can't say it's worth the price premium. This unit is very dim, it must be absolutely dark to use. Trying to turn the brightness up severely washes out the picture. I don't see how anyone could ever use the Eco mode, to only further reduce the brightness. Now to the current problem. I have a red led warning indicator that suggests a failing color wheel. BenQ has stated that they will not honor the warranty for the unit. I am waiting to see what the cost will be out of pocket for the repair. This was my first and likely my last BenQ projector.
