We bought this air purifier at my oldest son's request as his room is right next to the family room where we have our laser. Our laser has a good duct fan, but smell still is still there. We have noticed a HUGE difference having it in the room.
Next up? Another air purifier for the kitchen! Husband carried it up to kitchen for Thanksgiving cooking and it excelled. Bacon ... was a bit smokey in the room and as you can see in the pic the Bissell showed us an alert on air quality. It auto sped itself up to high and the room was ready for Thanksgiving dinner -- and the kitchen still smelled fresh the next morning. (Not the pic readjusted size on upload; it's a skinnier model than it looks like)
Highly recommend!! Looks nice and is quiet. I like the display which lets you see the quality of the air improving. I just can't carry it up and down the 2 flights of stairs....so we're ordering another.

- Effectively purifies air
- Different fan speed settings
Cons:
- Large size

Design:
Usually, air purifiers are not visually appealing, but the sleek and modern design of the BISSELL air400 is an exception. Although it is somewhat large, it is not an eyesore and fits well against the wall. Thanks to the carrying handle and its lightweight, carrying the air400 to another room is not backbreaking. All the controls are easily accessible on the top of the air400, and changing the air filters is simple. Overall, I think this is a well-designed air purifier.
Features:
In my opinion, the primary feature of the BISSELL air400 is the “CirQulate” system. With auto mode on, “CirQulate” automatically chooses the best airflow setting to provide optimal airflow and air quality. Upon turning on the BISSELL air400, I noticed that the feedback display was blue and had a relatively low number, which is an indication that the air quality is good, but it was not the lowest or best number (002). After about half a day of use on auto mode, the reading on the display was all the way down to 002. When the air is stirred up after having guests walk around the home or having the windows open, I notice the air quality reading go up to indicate lower air quality. I say this because I believe the air quality sensor is accurate, and it is a great feature to have on an air purifier because you can see that it is actively working on purifying the air. Other notable features are timer settings (select how long the fan will run), filter change indicators (shows when the filters need to be changed), a silent mode (makes the fan whisper quiet) and night mode (control panel lights and air quality feedback display dim).
Performance:
Besides trusting the air quality display on the front of BISSELL air400, or using another trusted device to test the air quality, unfortunately, there is no easy way to immediately tell if it is performing well. Perhaps for bad allergies, an improvement of symptoms at home could be a physical indication of good performance. However, what I can say with confidence is that the fan and the different modes work flawlessly, and I do trust the air400’s air sensor, so it is my opinion that this is a very well performing air purifier.
Verdict:
It is nice to know that where I sleep and spend much of my time has purified air. Although I do not have a medical condition that requires purified air or bad allergies, the peace of mind is enough for me to make owning the air400 worth it. If you are on the fence about purchasing an air purifier, I would encourage researching the health benefits to help you decide. As for which air purifier to get, I would highly recommend this BISSELL air 400.

We already have a large HEPA canister type air cleaner in our living room but wanted something for our bedroom. Saw Bissell came out with a new one “didn’t know they got into the air cleaning business” but since we already have a couple of their floor cleaners “and they work very well” I wanted to give this one a try. Living in MS “allergy capital of the US, “look it up :) “”, and having very severe allergies to everything outdoors and including molds and mildew, “fortunately no pet or food allergies”, I need to have an air purifier running all the time inside the house. Just having one in the main living area helps a lot but not for the whole house.
This new Bissell unit is pretty large, around 2’ high, 16” wide and almost 10” deep, it’s weighs 22lbs and feels plenty sturdy. Before the first use you have to remove the plastic wrap on the filters which are placed inside the unit. The back is held on by magnets which makes it very easy to pull out and lift away, also the back is where the air comes in so it’s easy to clean that while you are doing maintenance on the filters. The carbon filter goes in first and is made up of honeycomb cells each filled with pelletized carbon, not the carbon impregnated foam that a lot of cheaper air filters have. Then insert the HEPA filter with the attached pre filter facing out. The pre filter cloth is held on by a couple strips of Velcro and it’s easy to remove from the HEPA filter for cleaning.
Setting up was very simple, the controls on top are well laid out and easy to read. I plugged in the unit and turned it on. It defaults to “automatic” and that’s where I’ve left it, as I haven’t had a need to use any of the other settings. There’s a digital display on the front that shows the PPM in the air as its running “the lower number the better” and fortunately when the room lights are off the display shuts off and the blue emblem glows very lightly, just enough for a dim night light and didn’t bother us while sleeping. The automatic setting also puts the fan level on low at night and I can barely hear it running standing right next to it, in bed about 5’ away its silent.
We’ve been running this for about a week now and we both can tell a difference when we wake up. No more clogged noses and I seem to be sleeping a lot deeper than usual, my wife agrees she doesn’t wake up feeling stuffed up, so apparently it is doing its job.
I like the fact that the carbon filter is made up using granulated carbon, the carbon foam just isn’t thick enough for air to come into contact with it long enough to absorb much of anything, the Bissell is almost an inch thick. According to the instructions you’ll want to replace both the HEPA and Carbon filter every 6-8 months, but it really depends on how dirty your air is. There are indicator lights what will come on when it’s time to change the filters, so I’m curious how long they will actually last in real use.
We’re more than happy right now with this new Bissell air cleaner and if you are looking for one for a bedroom I’d take a serious look at this one, it’s very quiet and doesn’t disturb our sleep at all. It also seems to be getting rid of what ever is causing both of us to be stuffed up in the morning.

This is a large air purifier for larger rooms. We're using this in our Master Bedroom.
The controls very are simple to operate, with a manual, auto and night modes, and a timer.
The auto mode regulates the speed based on the air quality, this is displayed in a large display in the front of the unit, which has numbers and a color ring (different colors indicating air quality).
There is also a night mode that runs at its lowest speed, ideal for bedside usage.
Filters: It has large an thick HEPA filter, a carbon filter of the same size, and a thin mesh covering the outer filter. Replacing the filters takes seconds and no tools. The unit has a filter replacement indicator for each filter.
The HEPA filter is for particulates, including allergens.
The carbon filter is for reducing ambient odors.
There is also a dust sensor on the side of the unit, that the manual indicates it should be cleaned every couple weeks, and oddly, has a screw cover.
The unit is well constructed. The air movement is provided by a 'squirrel cage' fan (similar to most HVAC units) powered by a digital motor (These are the most precise motors, also used by the latest high-end vacuums, etc.).
It also has a light sensor that turns off all the indicators, except the color ring, which is dimmed to a faint glow.
It's a thoughtfully designed machine.
Note that if the unit looses power it will remain off, so it won't work with smart switches, and has no remote controls.

Knowing how disgusting indoor air can be, I run my air purifiers 24/7. My last Honeywell crapped out on me and needed a replacement. The Air400 looked promising as it numerically measures and displays your air quality. That is awesome because I love to nerd out on data. Most air purifiers you see on Amazon that calls itself “smart” only shows a color LED on the air quality. Not only does this Bissell show color but also a number to indicate how bad the air quality actually is. The lowest the display will show is 2. The highest I have gotten it was 999 when I was searing some steaks.
Pros:
• Silent when the air quality is below 30
• Will automatically ramp up the fan when the air quality declines
• Easy to replace filters
• Sips electricity at lowest setting
Cons:
• Tall and wide compared to other popular air purifiers
• Filters are costly and will run you $180 a year to replace ($45 each x 2 filters x twice a year to replace)
I normally run the air purifier 24/7 in just the bedroom, but for science and this review, I temporarily moved it to the kitchen to see if it helps with cooking smells. Cooking and searing can make my kitchen and living room smelly for days. Once I started cooking, the numerical display started rising. This was nice to see that it measures air quality in real time. My place gets pretty smoky when I sear my steaks and I actually got the air quality display to show the max 999. Wow…that’s bad for my health. The fan speed automatically ramps to speed up the air cleaning. It took a little over 2 hours to get the smoke and smells from cooking down to the “30” range from “999”. Now im sold on having a 2nd unit near the kitchen.
In summary, it’s a setup-and-forget about it type of unit. No need to tinker or adjust it’s settings. Leave it on AUTO mode and leave knowing that your air quality will constantly be monitored and cleaned by the Air400. Filter life is “up to 6 months”. The activated carbon can only absorb so much smells before becoming useless. From bissell’s website, each HEPA and carbon filter are $45 each. That’s $90 for every half year or $180 for the year. Spendy but that’s the price for clean air in your home where you spend most of your time. I did measure the electricity and with my current rate of .1189cents per KWH, the air purifier would cost around $9.29 a year to use when its running 24/7.
I highly recommend the Air400 to keep your family breathing healthy!

Powerful purification

Bissell air400 is a powerful yet quiet machine capable of 3 air exchanges in a 423sq ft room per hour (if running full speed). Air filtration is done in 3 stages - pre filter, HEPA particle filter (paper based) and 1" thick charcoal filter.
Current air quality (PM2.5 meter) is indicated on the front LCD display, in addition to that - color of the display ring would change depending on the current air quality situation.
Machine can run in 3 modes: Auto - fan speed is automatically adjusted depending on the current air quality conditions, Silent - minium fan speed and minimum noise, Max - full speed for real quick air cleaning.
When ambient light is low (room is dark) - air purifier would enter the "Night Mode" - all lights would dim and buttons won't emit sound when pressed.
Timer is available for setting run time of 1, 4 or 8 hours.
Overall - this air purifier does excellent job keeping my master bedroom PM2.5 level at 002 at most times, allergen and odor free!
Few things I would like to improve: make button beeps a bit quieter, add air quality indicators for VOC levels. In case of the power failure - this machine won't power back on when power is back which makes it impossible to use with external timer or a smart outlet.
Replacement filter cost is about $90 for both HEPA and carbon.

BISSELL - air400 is a superior quality product at a great price. It functions quietly on silent mode and properly dims light in night mode. Air elements are filtered and we've noticed a reduction in dust residue. LESS DUSTING!! Planning to purchase additional units for other family members.

Sleek design, lots of modes from max to silent, and the huge added bonus that the light is on the side opposite the filter, so you can turn it towards the wall and not have it assaulting your eyes. Air quality is noticeably better.

Bissell is well known for floor cleaners of various types; and, with their getting into air purifiers, they should be come as well known for purifiers. The air400 is a great way to get acquainted with BISSELL purifiers.
While, it is not small in size, put it in the right location, set it up, let it run, and you’ll probably forget about its size. One reason is that it runs so quietly, you’ll forget it’s there. I have had a fan/purifier in my downstairs great room for some months now, so I put the air400 in my bedroom. Trying it on automatic (the default startup), I have had absolutely no noise issues of any kind. It sits there working essentially in silence. There is a silent setting, which is silent! However, because automatic is barely louder than silent, I am leaving it there.
In addition to the three power mode settings, there are also three fan speeds, and there are three time settings if you wish to set it to run for a specific period of time. In addition, there are filter change indicators to let you know when one of the filters (activated carbon, particle + pre-filter) needs attention. They filters, by the way, are very easy to get to when they need maintenance or changing. The air400 weighs in at about 23 pounds, so it’s no lightweight; but Bissell has put a hand grip on each side that makes it easy to move around, if you need to. It is well thought out machine. .
To let you know your air “condition,” there is an easy to read display on the front of the purifier. The highest quality is indicated by the lowest number 002. So far, 003 is the highest number mine has indicated, which gives me confidence that I am breathing very good quality air at night.
Bissell has created an excellent product with the air400. It is big; and, if you have very limited space, that could be an issue. On the other hand, it works so well, you might want to squeeze it in. Also, the price is pricey; however, if you get long use out of it, you will easily amortize the cost. In addition, it is Energy Star certified, which will also save your dollars.
I love the Bissell air400 and would most certainly recommend it!

Clean air in the entire house

We have some seasonal allergies at home and a neighbor downstairs that smokes, and we receive his second hand smoke, so we considered to use an air purifier to make the air that we breathe a bit healthier for the entire family. Bissell is a great brand that we tested with our vacuum so seems an obvious fit.
This unit seems to work very well, has all the items that I have in my list as a must for this type of appliance: easy to setup and turning on and off, more than one filter that can extend the deepness of cleaning and a silent functioning that doesn’t interfere with the life in the house. This unit is quiet and seems to be very efficient. When we connected as first time, the particles indicator at home was at a very low 70 (I understand that in some households could be up to 400) and now is at 3, so seems obvious that has been effective. In the other two moments when the indicator went up over 100 (cooking the Thanksgiving dinner or during an in-house barbeque) the extra-speed reduced the smoke (and smell) in a very convenient time.
One of my main concerns considering the size (not too bulky) of the unit was its performance and its potential impact in the entire house air, especially because our living room has super high ceilings. In the last days, I’ve been moving the purifier around the different rooms in the 3bd apartment and I can observe that the particle reading is always consistent with almost the same number between rooms, so I concluded that has the power that I need to take care of the entire house.
I also love its night functionality and the fact that automatically the unit reduces the light level in the control panel.
I don’t have a single complain up to now.
