Works well in our large living room

I don't think the air quality in our home is noticeably bad or anything but I do have a couple of friends that come over frequently who are allergic to our cats. We spend most of the time in our living room so I set this up in there. The last time friends were over, I would say that I noticed less sneezing and other allergy symptoms than most times but I can't say any sort of scientific study was done here. Just my perception of the evening. It's a very large unit. The display on the front is really neat for visualizing the air quality. The air in my living room is usually at the highest quality but when I've turned off the machine for a couple of days and turn it back on, the number jumps up a little bit but quickly filters back to great. So as far as their gauge is telling me, it works wonderfully! I'm planning on moving it around to other rooms and seeing what kind of air quality it reports and how quickly it filters it. The machine was quite easy to set up. There's a quick start card that's very short and doesn't really require much reading. There's stickers on the device that tell you what you need to do before you run it. All that's really required is taking off the back panel and removing the filters from the plastic bags they come in. Put them back in and you're all set. Since my air quality is always pretty good, it's very quiet. You can really feel the air pumping out of the top but it's hard to hear unless it's super quiet in your room and you listen for it. When it cranks into a higher setting, it's noticeable but not bad. You should only need to run it on max if you have some really bad air and you need to filter it quickly. Mine is always set on "auto" and it works really quietly all the time. If you're in the market for a large air purifier and this fits your budget, I think it's a pretty good device. I can't speak for it clearing up a warehouse with some terrible air quality but if you have a normal home and are worried about the air quality in a specific room, this might be good for you.

I like it, now that we need to keep everything disinfected and ultra clean. I like to know that everyone is safe at home. This pandemic is driving everybody nuts. Trying to do my best to keep my family and myself safe.

This is a great air purifier, that could purify half of the country if placed outside I believe. There are multiple fan speeds, from very low to blowing a house over. The automatic mode is what I leave it in, and it seems to work very well. It has a color coded display with a numerical readout of the air quality in the room, and it adjusts the fan speed accordingly. You can also manually set the fan speed, with an option to set a timer for auto shutoff as well. There is minimal maintenance, such as cleaning the air quality sensor every few weeks, and shaking out the filters.

I've had this air purifier running for about a week now. I love how quiet it is! It isn't as big as some units, but it certainly isn't small. I love the auto feature. You set it to auto and it monitors the room and kicks up when it needs to! You can see the level of air quality with the nice lighted feature on the face of the unit. It's very nice looking. It has a 2 filter system and they are hefty filters! You will feel confident that this unit is actually cleaning the air. Overall this is a great air purifier and I'm so glad I have it!

This was a lot larger than I expected it to be, it’s about the size of a portable air conditioner. I wanted it for our bedroom but our room is on the small side, this is for about 300-400 square foot room. Set up was easy but it’s very basic operation with mode, timer, fan speed & filter reset settings. The display is blue for good air quality, yellow for moderate & red for poor. Numbers appear inside the display telling you your air quality but there isn’t a description of what those numbers mean. It is suppose to remove, pollen, dust, smoke particles but I don’t see any info about mold particles which is what I would’ve liked. There are two filters, one carbon & one Hepa, filter change is easy you just remove the back. I ran it a little & didn’t notice a difference because our air quality was already good, I’ll give it a chance to see how it works in the Summer for pollen. I’m just not impressed with the size or looks of it.

I have used several different air purifiers over the years, and most of the time the Purifier only really works well a couple of times at first and slowly stop working as well. I have to say I am surprised with this Bissell purifier that it's working just as well when I first used it. It's very easy to use and the controls are very simple. My only complaint is the size is pretty big so it's not something that is very small. There is not much to say besides that it work very well as intended and if your looking for a purifier this is the one I would recommend.

If you are in the market for an air purifier and understand what all they do --, and don't do -- you could do worse than the Bissell Air400. A relative newcomer to this market, Bissell has managed to assemble a fairly well designed, simple- to -use air scrubber that is likely to do everything you expect from such a device, and maybe a bit more. Perhaps its best feature is its always-on automatic mode, which comes on by default when you turn it on and adjusts itself to meet whatever air quality conditions it encounters. It constantly samples the air and cranks up the blower automatically when the particulate count gets too high. It then returns to almost silent mode once the air quality returns to the proper (good) level. Even better it has a light sensor that automatically shuts down most of the lights at night (except for that big blue star on the front, which is only dimmed) and turns everything back on again in daylight., I found the air quality in my home remarkably good, at least by Bissell standards. It rarely reported a quality index higher than "2," the best possible number, regardless where I moved it in my house. The only time I ever say it even approach "10" (still good) is when I took a shower or used household cleaners. Keep in mind I have a couple of cats so the place is hardly a clean room environment. If you don't really need to clean the particulates from the air, how about odors? The Bissell seemed to do a bang up job there, quickly removing any mustiness or cleaning product odors. This, I assume is thanks to its massive charcoal HEPA filter, which is designed for just such purposes. In the world of air purifiers, this thing is quite a large beast, about the size of medium suitcase. Lots of them are smaller than this but not many are bigger. Still, it doesn't weigh much, less than 20 pounds, so is easy to move around using the built in side handles. It is only designed to clean the air in a 400 square foot room so unless you a living in NY City closet that passes as an apartment or an efficiency, you probably are going to want move it around to different rooms from time to time. Just be aware all that clean air does not come cheap. The hefty purchase price is just the beginning. The real hit to the wallet comes from the dreaded consumables.... the filters. There are three of them and Bissell says they should ALL be replaced every six months. That will set you back almost $200 a year. No washable reusable filters here. They all have to be replaced. At least that's easy. A big door in back just pops off and they all slide right in one after another. I wish I could say the same for another little gizmo on the side that detects particulates. You are supposed to clean it every two weeks. But does it have a pop out door? Of course not! Some genius designer decided you should need a screw driver to remove the door to get to it. So even though you have to clean it a LOT more often, it's a lot harder to get to. Go figure. My other gripe is the big drum fan inside that moves the air seems surprisingly cheap. Looks like some very lightweight plastic that is not at all balanced. So if you crank up the fan to high, it wobbles all over the place and makes an awful racket. You could not endure being in the same room with this thing on high for very long. It's not much better at medium fan speeds. I expect better at this price point. The good news is you don't need to run it on high very often, if ever, unless you have a kitchen fire or something. And it is very quiet most of the time. And can be silent (as in off) if you opt for it to run a 1, 4 or 8 hour a day schedule instead of full time in automatic. Do you really need one of these things? Probably not. Experts say the health benefits are debatable. But if you are hyper about air quality, have some medical condition that demands very clean air or have some unusual odor problems, the Bissell Air400 will do the job.

This is easily the best air purifier I've used. It is quiet and efficient. The numerical readout of your home's air quality on the front is great. If you use Zero Water filters, it's similar to their reader that tells you how many parts per million of impurities there are in your water. I cannot recommend this purifier enough. We have 4 pets, 2 dogs and 2 cats, and this helps keep our air clean as though we had no pets.

Noticeable Air Improvement with Quiet Motor

I’ve had this running in a 260 sq. ft. room for about one week on Auto mode. It has a nice low fan sound, similar to a quiet white-noise machine. Ideal for a bedroom. Even after several hours of heavy cooking in our nearby kitchen, I haven’t heard the fan speed increase to Mid or High. However, I have seen the digital air quality display temporarily increase from the usual 002-005 reading to a high of 030. I was hoping it would eliminate the heavy dust accumulation in the room. Normally, I can dust in the morning and by evening see that a light film has already developed. It did reduce the dust a bit, but not as much as I was anticipating. I did notice a significant reduction in cooking odors with the unit vs. without it. This made me a believer. Nothing worse than trying to sleep in a room that smells like cooked cauliflower. I do like the automatic light control. When the room lights are dimmed, both the white lights on the control panel and the air quality display will turn off. Although the color wheel dims, I do wish there was an option to turn it off completely at night. It’s still too bright if you’re trying to black out a bedroom. I have to tape a dark piece of cloth over it at bedtime. Overall, this is a good investment for a healthier home. We’ve discovered we’ll need at least one more unit.

This unit claims to filter and clean the air within your home. I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical at first. When I first turned this on, I wasn't sure if it was doing much. There is a digital readout on the front panel that uses a set of numbers and colors to visually tell you how clean (or not so clean) the input air is. The first day that I used this, the unit was displaying 002 (clean) air. It wasn't until I started cooking that I saw just what this unit could do. It was cold and raining outside, so cooking my dinner (steak) on the grill was out. I prefer a good sear in a hot cast iron pan anyways, but always hated doing it inside because it would fill my downstairs with smoke. With this unit running (in auto mode), I through the steaks into a smoking hot pan. Instantly, smoke began to fill the room (yes, my range hood was running). I looked over at the Bissell air cleaner, and noticed the digital readout increasing and changing color. I heard the fan pickup speed and could actually see it pulling in some of the "dirty" air. After cooking, the room cleared out very fast (much faster than if I wasn't running the air cleaner). I left it to run while we ate dinner and the numbers slowly decreased. Within an hour, the room was clear, clean, and the readout was back to 002. The next morning, I also noticed that the room didn't smell as though I had been cooking meat on a hot pan like it normally would. Needless to say, this unit did exactly what it claims to do. I have no doubt that it should help me immensely once allergy season returns.

We have struggled with dust in our home for years. I have a cleaning lady come every 2 weeks and by that point there is a full layer of dust in my house. I decided to give this unit a try to see if it helped. It did. The unit is big and surprisingly quiet. It runs all day if you want it to and does not make that much noise like I said. No louder than my HVAC unit that runs. I first tried it in my bedroom where I felt would help the most since it's where I sleep. After the first night I felt that the air was much cleaner. My wife and I both suffer from allergies and we both agreed that we felt like there were less allergens in the air. But after the 2 weeks between cleanings the biggest difference was the dust. There is visibly less dust in the room than before. There was still some but a lot less. We have never had the vents cleaned since we bought the house 10 years ago so we think that would help too. We now want to place the unit in the main living room to see if it can handle the larger area. Overall we are very happy with this unit and think it actually does what it claims.
