One might be considered normal, but the replacement belt that Bissell sent only lasted a couple of months before it broke and the vacuum began smoking! I don't have kids and live in a one bedroom apartment, so it is not under excessive use. I was also never impressed with the pet brush attachment. Handheld hair removers have worked better. The suction in the hose wasn't much better than that, and for this to be advertised as a pet hair vac, it is really disappointing. When I called Bissell, she told me the belts should be replaced every 6 months (who knew it would need maintenance as regularly as a car?) I already have a replacement from another brand that is much lighter, much less expensive and should require less TLC.
