Customers are enthusiastic about the SmartClean 1605's cleaning performance and suction power, frequently praising its ability to thoroughly clean floors and pick up dirt. However, some users expressed concerns regarding its navigation, battery life, and noise level, noting inconsistencies in cleaning patterns and a shorter-than-expected run time. The ease of use and scheduling features also received mixed reviews, with some finding programming to be less intuitive than expected.

I was skeptical about this product but it does a great job. The bin does get full pretty quick but the vacuum does a very good suction. Be careful of cords because it does get tangled up in them easily.

I got a cheaper brand, a deebot and it works better than this! This vacuum was awful. It seemed like it didn't know where to go and couldn't even go close to objects and clean around them.

I've been interested in the more expensive robotic vacuums, but I just couldn't make the decision to spend so much money. When I saw that Bissell offered one AND it was on sale, I figured it was worth a shot. I have not been disappointed at all! If you're thinking about it, I definitely recommend this model.

I own several Roomba robot vacuums. All are still working fine, but I needed another one for another home. This time, I decided to try this vacuum from Bissell since it's a fraction of the cost of a Roomba. I would say it works well enough for a fraction of the cost. The only thing I can't comment on yet is durability. My oldest Roomba is about 10 years old and still kicking!

Even when the vaccuum sits on the charger, it doesn't hold a charge. I still can't figure out how to have it run when I'm not home without it stopping because it can't hold a charge. Works well when it is charged.

Our Bissell now known as "Mabel launches from her home base and moves around our home for 90 minutes. You do need to be sure ther are loose wires are out on her way. This not a large upright vacuum but for the size it does a wonderful job and does get where a large vacuum would never reach

BISSELL - SmartClean Robot Vacuum -Titanium/Teal
Do you find yourself choosing whether to take a day off to shop and just relax or, instead, clean the apartment/house? Why choose? Do both. This new category of appliance, the robotic vacuum, has cleaning the floors covered. This SmartClean Vacuum will work tirelessly, randomly roaming around your floors, sucking up dust and dirt, and then returning to charge up before it continues the task.
SUMMARY: This is very effective robotic vacuum. It relentlessly wandered without issues across the carpets, tile, bare wood floors, and most of the throw rugs in our home. It was easy to empty and recharge. The instructions leave out some critical information; hopefully I can help correct some omissions. Setting up a convenient “home” for the Bissell was tricky for us. But, my wife is not giving up this new dust-fighting companion without a fight. This is an appliance that contributes to making life more convenient at a reasonable price.
SETUP NOTES: We’re not able to meet some of the setup preconditions in our home. The Bissel needs 50 continuous wall inches, in the vicinity of an outlet, for it to re-dock successfully for auto recharging. The dock must be secured flush to the wall, and flat on the floor. We have our own preconditions, and they conflict. We need to keep walkways clear and prefer not to have our little robot vac on display. For reasons of design aesthetics, room layout, and walkway safety, it just isn’t possible to find the ideal 50” home base. Our walls also have a 3/4” quarter round at the wall-floor intersection which required a slight modification to the vacuums dock mount. So, we’ve made some concessions. We’ve given up the convenient re-docking feature, accomplishing that manually, while our Bissel’s home station is located where it’s convenient, if less functional. Despite giving up this desirable feature, my wife still wouldn’t give up her new, wandering vacuuming friend.
I gave the Bissel a full charge. Then, I HELD down the CENTER BUTTON and simultaneously pressed the pattern control button (MODE) until the desired AUTO pattern was set; I followed that with a press of both CENTER BUTTON and the +/- control to set vacuum suction on low. Then we repeatedly pressed the CENTER BUTTON until 99 was showing and the 13”, 4lb robot was on its way for the next 90 minutes. I set up Bissel’s included “invisible wall” to exclude our complex exercise room maze and this worked nicely.
PERFORMANCE: All floor types were easily negotiated. Transitions were handled, eventually. A few failed efforts were eventually overcome without any interventions from us except for a couple of thick throw-rugs with thick pads. The Bissel worked its way around these two and went on its way. An especially nice feature is the low profile which lets the Bissel continue unimpeded under sofas and beds we sometimes ignore when our backs are tired. Even out-of-reach corners don’t seem to be a problem. An inspection of the dust bin after a cycle around what looked to us like a clean house showed a variety of dust globs, hair, dirt particles and some wire clippings I must have lost track of. Suction appears more that adequate for the task.
NOISE LEVEL (measured with iPhone Decibel App): Like that “tree falling in a forest” question, if there is no one there to actually hear the sound, does it even matter? If it does, you should know that . . . . our very quiet home has an average 42dB noise level with NO appliances operating. This Bissel, from 1 meter away, measures 72dB on wood floors (which reflect more sound into the room) and 67dB when it’s on carpet (which absorbs sounds more effectively). From across the room I measured mid 50dB, a level unlikely to disturb a phone call.

I've used it 3 times. It won't go on the carpet unless I give it a little push! It's a small carpet, next to my bed. It does great on floors, which I have on most of my house. My house is small, two bedroom, so it's not a lot of vacuuming to be done. It picks up everything off the floor. Even under the beds. It's a good product for the price I paid!

It goes everywhere, picks up everything, even cat and dog hair, starts automatically and returns to base to recharge. I've always had a hard time vacumming under my furniture, but no more, it goes easily under beds, chairs tables, etc.
The only 2 issues I've had are:
1. I have too many power cords on the floor and it will get hung up on them sometimes.
2. It picks up so well, I have to empty it a lot and clean the cat/dog hair off of the brush roller.
Other than that, it was well worth every penny I paid for it!

Robotic vacuum cleaners have been in the market for about a decade now I believe, yet they were only made available by one particular brand who practically pioneered it's creation. Turn the dial to 2015 and in comes the Bissell SmartClean robot vacuum. What brought Bissell into this realm and what improvements have they made towards it? Let's dig deeper.
- INITIAL SETUP
Opening the box by unlatching the flaps and you will be greeted with the vacuum, a power adapter, two rotating brushes, a docking station, a dongle known as the "Invisible Wall", a lithium ion battery, and documentation. You simply flip the SmartClean upside down, attach the brushes to the vacuum, insert the lithium ion battery into the battery compartment (making sure the + and - connectors align), and plug the AC adapter directly into the vacuum to a wall outlet.
BUT, your SmartClean's display keeps reading E4, which the manual indicates that the battery wasn't inserted properly. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? Oh wait a minute, what happens if I turn the SmartClean power switch to ON? It starts charging! Wonderful, not sure why it wouldn't just do it at the OFF position but that's a question for Bissell to answer.
- FIRST USE
Alright, after about 3 and a half hours of charging, the SmartClean was ready to put in some (dirty) work. Unplugged from the AC outlet, the vacuum immediately starts beeping like an infant baby crying for his/her mother... it apparently wanted me to place it on the floor, because SmartClean knows it wasn't destined to clean your air obviously. I tapped the green button and the SmartClean immediately started to go along it's business to clean. How simple, right?!
But, what exactly was it going to do? How long was it going to stay on? Did I set it on the right mode for my hard floors?
It turns out the SmartClean can operate just fine in it's automatic mode. It will go around your home (in this case, my apartment) and clean house until it runs out of juice; from there it will navigate itself to the docking station to recharge for the next scheduled cleaning cycle. (Speaking of which, you set the time you want your SmartClean to automatically vacuum your home from the docking station.)
- OPERATING MODES
Again, your SmartClean will do just fine on it's auto "clean-till-I'm-burned-out" mode, but you do also have the option to set SmartClean to clean for 30, 45, and 60 minutes, as well as the option to go back to it's docking station after the time is up or stay in it's spot.
You are also able to configure how the SmartClean will navigate; rotating in circles, zig-zag, in a square/rectangle, at random, or just automatically. I just leave mine at auto because it's navigation system is able to figure out corners from walls, furniture feet, chairs, etc. and clean AROUND the object rather than keep bumping into it. I thought that was pretty cool.
- CLOSING THOUGHTS
I know I didn't go much into detail about how well this cleans and such, so I'll go ahead and tell you now: It keeps my floors clean. It also cleans under my furniture and the little spots I don't really want to clean all the time. That being said, it's not perfect: if your SmartClean runs over wires, coins, needles, or other odd objects it could clog onto the brushes and stop functioning properly, meaning you'll need to flip the vacuum upside down and remove the suspicious object before having it clean again. It's also quite noisier than I expected, so I mainly only have it vacuum when nobody is at home... otherwise, the loud sound and all the bumps here and there would get pretty annoying to listen to after a little while.
Compared to other robot vacuums on the market, however, the Bissell SmartClean does offer you a fantastic bang for your buck if you want a device that gives you one less chore to do, although not as perfect as you'd expect if you were to just vacuum yourself with an actual big-boy vacuum cleaner. But as always, your mileage may vary.

Cleans really well on tile and carpet. For the price just under $300 while all other robot vacuums are high priced. This machine works really well covering all floor space within 30, 45 or 60min durations and different cleaning patterns.

Thick area rugs...Meh, it does entertain the cats.

Bought this robot vacuum cleaner on 6th of December. So it has operated for two whole days. It was packaged very nicely in a sturdy box, which includes the robot, the lithium ion battery, instruction booklet written in English and Spanish, the charging station, and the room entrance blocker device.
As a former computer programmer and a life long techno geek, I find this device very entertaining. My two cats watch intensely while it tries to do its thing. It was put to work in the family room which has a large hardwood floor with a plush wool area rug right in the middle. The rug is thick with an edge that is about 5/8" at the edge and has a 3/4" pile. The robot, in most cases, cannot make it up unto the rug. It spends most of its time negotiating end tables and roaming under chairs where it takes several minutes for it to find its way out. I must say that for something that is blind, it works incredibly well. The only problem is the rug, which it can only get onto if it is doing its spiraling thing and it hits the edge just right. Many times it then spirals right off the edge of the rug again to be stuck cleaning just the wood floor.
If you have problems setting a digital clock or if you had problems programming that old VCR, then this is not probably something that you will want to get. Also, this thing eats those thin wires that go to your laptop or that go between the wall charger and your cell phone, so these cannot be laying on the floor; that is unless you like dismantling the robot so that you can extract the wires. And YES, that happened the second day when it started doing its thing while I was away. I'd recommend that you be around when its time for it to run. If you have to work on it, remove the battery first.
In my case the charging station is another issue. Apparently the Bissell folks think that it needs to be anchored to the baseboard. The problem is that the base shoe (that little quarter round trim board) that sticks out about 1/2 inch from the baseboard, doesn't work with the mounting device that Bissell provides. So, you may have to figure out something else there. So far it has worked to just sit the charging station there next to the outlet and against the base shoe.
The guide book that comes with the unit could be written better. It is just enough to get you by and the button markings and codes listed in that manual didn't match the button legends and codes that were on the robot.
As far as recommendations go, I would say NO if you have thick area rugs on hardwood floors or if you are not into technical devices. I would say YES if you have all carpeted or hardwood floors and like playing with technical stuff.
When you consider that this device is half the cost of its competition you have to say thanks Bissell for giving those other guys some competition.
We're going to try this unit in a much larger area that is primarily all tile and hardwood floors to see if that works better.

I was very happy with this vac, till the other day. A tiny piece of plastic that holds in the brush roller broke. I called to order one, and was told it was not a serviceable part. Only solution is to replace the vac. Seriously, a .20cent part killed the vac.
