Very quick
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I like this brissell smartclean because it is very fast but it doesn't clean as well as my neato signature pro. The Neato signature has better suction than any robot vacuum without plugging your ears. The brissell has different speed and pattern options.

Cleans so I don't have to!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This product was very easy to use right out of the box. There is a detailed instruction manual along with a simple, "get started" instruction sheet for charging and setup. The vacuum comes assembled; all the user has to do is attach the spinning brushes to the bottom which was quite easy. Before use you have to install the battery pack (which comes in the box) and charge the unit for 4-5 hours with the included charger. I charged mine and ended up not returning home until late that night so I didn't use it until the next day. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the charge held overnight. All I did was place the unit on the floor, flip the power switch to on, touch the middle button to make it go and it did the cleaning for me. I was quite surprised at how much noise the machine made but even more surprised at how well it cleaned the floor. It has a built in wall sensor that will stop it and reroute it when it gets too close to a wall. The sensor also worked around our feet and legs but not so well with the chair and table legs in our dining room - it bumped those incessantly but redirected its path after each bump. The contact is not harsh and it didn't leave any scratches or dents so this was not a big deal to me. The brushes that you attach during the initial setup help to pull all the dirt and debris from along the walls so that it will get picked up even when the vacuum cannot get close enough. Installing the docking station for future charging is also easy and quick as long as the required space is given. The only downside that I found about this product is how loud it is. I was honestly very surprised to turn it on and see how much noise it made. Considering that it redirects itself every time it gets near a wall vacuuming just a hallway can take quite a bit of time and that means a lot of noise. In my case I do most of my cleaning during the day while everyone else is at work and school so it wasn't too much of a problem but if there were a sleeping baby or someone trying to watch TV while this was running it may be an issue. However, the fact that this machine does all the sweeping for me is such an awesome thing that I'm willing to overlook the noise. Overall it's a great product and it's definitely become a regular fixture in our home.

Really cool and costs less than other robots
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was my first foray into the robot vacuum market. I was surprised at how well the SmartClean actually worked! It has several cool features like a programmable timer and it is self charging. I thought the suction would not be very strong but I was wrong. It actual has very decent suction power. The collection bin is not very big, especially compared to some upright bags but there are always tradeoffs with every product. Setup out of the box required some light assembly but nothing to be afraid of. The unit has to charge before use. I found the controls to be a little confusing. It has LED lights on top that are used an indicators and programming buttons. You can set the timer by pressing the top of the charger. The unit worked great and quickly went to work roaming around my living room. It worked best in my kitchen and office area both of which have tile and hard floors. It did an excellent job with the dog hair and dust bunnies in my office area. There were some areas of my living room that I went over again later with my traditional upright...leading me to believe that I could not completely get rid of my traditional vacuum cleaner in favor of this new unit. I had problems finding a good place in our living room and den area to connect the wall charger, which was kind of a bummer. The robot is supposed to go back to it's recharging station on its own when the battery runs low but there were a couple of occasions where that didn't happen. In order to keep the robot from roaming they included a cool accessory called an invisible wall. It is a sensor that signals to the robot that it should go no further. It worked as described. Overall I thought that this was a great little device. I saw that the price of this is lower than many of the other robots that clean floors. I have never had one before so I don't know how it compares to others. It worked best on my hard floors. It did ok on my carpet but still left a little to be desired. I am not ready to put my upright vaccum cleaner to pasture yet but the Bissell SmartClean is a great addition to my cleaning closet.

Works nicely on hard wood and bare floors.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This vacuum works great on my hard wood and uncarpeted surfaces but it had an issue on any area rug that wasn't a solid color or patern. Each time the vacuum reached a color change in the carpet oettern, it changed directions and so never really cleaned the carpets all that well.

Wish it could be programmed
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I felt that I wasn't able to control where the vacuum cleaned. I wish that I could control the settings. I actually ended up returning this. Otherwise it did work well. I will be purchasing another one from Best Buy soon but I think I'll try a different brand.

Nice, but not perfect
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great idea, just needs some tweaking in my opinion. The vacuum has great suction and cleaned the floors great, better than a standard vacuum does. It's a little louder than I expected, but still much quieter than a traditional vacuum. The only complaint I have about it is it seemed to go over the same area multiple times. I have a large living room (where I tested it first) and it seemed to constantly go over the same spot and not go over other areas. Now I do have a bunch of furniture in the room, which may be the cause of that, but I'm not 100% sure. This would probably work better in a more open area, which unfortunately I do not have. When I remodel the one room in my house, and clear all the furniture out of the room, I will try it there and see if it works better. I really like the vacuum and its features, however just wished it covered more of the floors. Worked great on hardwood and carpet, and did a great job going from hardwood to carpet and vice versa. Overall, great product and I am satisfied with it.

More than just a novelty toy
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We've enjoyed various robotic toys, including Robie Junior and a couple of robotic cats, since the 1980s. For me, the question is whether the BISSELL SmartClean Robot Vacuum (SCRV) is basically another novelty toy, or can it actually do a decent job cleaning floors? After running the SCRV for about a week, I've decided that it is not only a somewhat entertaining toy, but also a serious vacuum cleaner that does a surprisingly good job on hardwood floors, kitchen tile, and carpets. The BISSELL SCRV required almost no assembly out of the box. I simply had to insert the rechargeable battery into the unit, pop on two circular edge-cleaning brushes, and place 4 AA batteries (not included) into the invisible wall device. Instructions said to make sure filter was properly installed, but it already was. However, I then had to plug the wall adapter charger into the unit and wait 4-5 hours until the battery was fully charged. It's a good thing I read the instructions carefully, because you must turn the unit on in order to charge the battery—not very intuitive, but that's how it works. After the SCRV was charged, I transferred the wall adapter into the docking station and set the clock and cleaning schedule on the station. Choosing the cleaning schedule was a little tricky. I had to press the Select button, then repeatedly press the + or - buttons to cycle through five schedule choices: once a week (any day), every day, five days (Mon-Fri), six days (Mon-Sat), or weekends (Sat-Sun), and then press Select one more time to finalize the choice. The tricky part was that if I delayed too long on the final Select (which I did a couple of times while practicing), it went back to the previous schedule setting and I had to run through the schedule setting process all over again. To insure that the auto-charge feature of the dock is working, the instructions suggested placing the SCRV some distance from the dock, turning it on, repeatedly pressing the time button on the unit until it reads "00" and then observing whether the unit finds its way back to the dock. I tried this and it worked, no problem! However, what is not clear from the instructions is that if you want to charge the unit in the dock, either you have to wait until the SCRV is low on charge and finds its way back, or you must select 00 to make it go back. You cannot simply lift the unit and place it into the dock. If you do, it will not charge. Other available settings on the SCRV are path selection and suction selection. Pressing the path selection button cycles you through five choices: spiral, along the wall, Z formation, random, and "auto" (which is a combination of the first four). It would have been helpful if the manual explained why you might want to make any of these choices. Not knowing what would be best, I selected the auto choice. For suction selection, you can choose either normal or turbo. Again, it would have been nice if the manual explained why you would want to choose one or the other. In my own testing, I found that the normal setting was quite powerful; it even picked up a jade plant leaf. The day I ran the unit on turbo, it ran low on charge after 50 minutes—much less than the maximum of 1.5 hours or so under normal. And it is a bit louder under turbo. I watched the SCRV for over an hour on its first run on the main floor of our house. We have an open concept layout, which allowed the SCRV to move around six connected areas: entrance foyer, parlor to one side, then dining area, kitchen, breakfast nook, and family room. Although the floor plan is open, there are plenty of obstacles around, including furniture, raised trim between the kitchen/nook and the dining room and family room, and some throw rugs. It was downright fascinating watching the SCRV navigate around the spaces. It was never trapped for long under furniture or in corners, and it was able to hoist itself over the trim and up unto carpets. At one point we did notice that the unit had an "accident" while crossing the trim: in the process of climbing over the trim it dumped a small load of dirt. To its credit, it eventually found the lost dirt and sucked it back up. The motor of the SCRV seemed to labor while it was on the throw carpets, which I suppose is normal. Our regular vacuum cleaner does the same thing. Overall, I found the noise from the SCRV somewhat loud, although not nearly as loud as a regular vacuum cleaner. I sort of got used to it after a while and was able to hear the TV over it. However, it is clear that after observing how well it does for a few runs, it makes more sense to schedule the cleanings for times when you are out of the house. The SCRV didn't seem to have a methodical plan for covering all of the floors. It seemed to repeat some areas while neglecting others, but eventually it seemed to cover the entire floor space. After running the SCRV for about an hour, I pulled out the dust bin (which was very simple and easy) to see what the SCRV had collected. I did not expect much, because I thought our floors looked pretty clean. I was amazed at the amount of dust, lint, hair, and particles that had been picked up by the SCRV. It was like one of those sales demonstrations where you clean your floor and then the salesperson shows how much more dirt can be gathered up by the machine he/she wants to sell you. Except there was no salesperson here; the SCRV was simply showing me just how well it cleans. And this demonstration was repeated on subsequent days. Every time the SCRV picked up a significant amount of dirt. A few more observations as I wrap up this review. The SCRV has a bumper that causes it to back up when striking a vertical surface. The bumper works very well, and the striking force does not have to be great for the bumper to work. During my first tests of the unit I closed the door to our bedroom not quite all the way because I didn't want the SCRV in our bedroom but I wanted to allow our cat to get in and out of the bedroom. The SCRV successfully reversed after bumping into the door left ajar without opening the door. Another point I would like to make is to follow the instructions about what you can and cannot have lying about when the SCRV is in action. Blankets are one of the things you should not have on the floor. Although we did not have blankets on the floor, a couple of days after getting the SCRV we got our Christmas tree and placed a cloth skirt around it. When the SCRV found the skirt, it jammed the mechanism and stopped with an error code. There was absolutely no damage to the skirt or unit, but think—if something like this happened five minutes after the unit started cleaning and you were out of the home, your floor would not have been cleaned. If you have areas that you want the SCRV to avoid, you can use the invisible wall device, which works perfectly. After the tree skirt incident, I used the invisible wall to keep the SCRV out of the bay window area where we had set up our tree. Finally, although the SCRV is described as having "smart technology," I do wonder about its intellectual efficiency. If you want to clean an area quickly and efficiently, get out your regular vacuum cleaner and you can do the job in maybe 15% of the time as it would take the SCRV to do the job. Sometimes as I watched it, I found myself thinking, "Why are you going that way?" or "Why don't you turn now?" One of the funniest moments was when the unit suddenly found itself on low charge at the back of the parlor. It turned and headed straight for the dock, which was just outside the room in the foyer. But it did not quite get through the room entrance, hitting a bookcase about a foot to the right of the entrance. If it had circled left, it would have had a clear path to the last four feet to the dock. Instead, it turned right and proceeded to bump against the wall repeatedly, circling, clockwise, the entire perimeter of the room before it found the open space. By that time its motor was grinding so slowly I thought it might conk out. It did, however, make it back to the dock. So, is the the BISSELL SmartClean Robot Vacuum just a novelty toy, or does it actually clean? I would say that it does clean very well if you follow instructions. Although it cannot clean as intelligently and efficiently as a person, it will do an acceptable job, and if you set it up correctly, it will do the work while you are not home. And having one's floor cleaned as frequently as every day when you are not home is pretty cool.

Does well against the competition
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Bissell SmartClean Robot Vacuum turned out to be an interesting contrast for what is available in a robot vacuum. My first experience with a robot vacuum was a purchase I made maybe over a year ago. We installed wood floors and I got tired of seeing my wife’s hair on the light color wood. To no fault of hers she just has long black hair. I saw a Neato robot vacuum on sale and thought maybe that was the solution to the problem. The way that vacuum works is very much different than the SmartClean. Both vacuums have many of the same common features. They will go over most any floor certainly neither had a problem with my wood flooring. They dock and charge on their own. And both can be programmed to run whenever you want. They both support invisible walls and like most devices they each have their own unique way to be programmed but it can also be just as easy to push a button and walk away. It’s when it comes to actual use that I found the SmartClean to be much easier to manage from day to day. It’s easier to take the dust bin out and clean the filter. I don’t have to move anything out of the way and worry it will get stuck. You had to almost prep the rooms for the Neato to finish without getting hung up on something. It is a lot quieter than I expected so that was also a nice surprise. The SmartClean has options for the type of pattern it uses to move around. So where the Neato pulls away from its dock and starts to scan the room the SmartClean just runs for as long as you let it in either a random pattern or one of the five different pattern choices it gives you. My first thought was clearly the Neato with its room mapping would be much more efficient but actually it doesn’t do any better when it finishes. They both do better than I expected any robot vacuum to do so I am sold on them being a simple way to help keep your house clean. So it comes down to value and just what you need the vacuum to do for you. There both well built but the Bissell can be found for around one hundred less. I looked for replacement parts for both vacuums and didn’t have any issue finding anything you might need for the Bissell. Of course since the Bissell costs less you can get an extended warranty and run it without worry. I will say that on a carpet floor the Neato might have the edge because it does have more overall suction power. But the SmartClean gets in the corners much better. So if you think you can replace using a larger vacuum with the robot vacuum your chances might be better with the Neato. But if you want a simple robot vacuum that seems to do very well for the value the SmartClean is a very good choice.

Good idea but not worth it
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought the unit when it was on sale. I was excited as i read the reviews and it seems it would work for my needs. Followed the instructions, but it would not hold a charge for more than 3 minutes. Called customer support and they would read me the manual on what i should be doing and to call back after i tried charging for 24 hrs again. returned it the next day as i was not going to be wasting my time anymore.
