Customers are enthusiastic about the SmartClean 1605's cleaning performance and suction power, frequently praising its ability to thoroughly clean floors and pick up dirt. Very confusing. I would not recommend to a friend, returned it to get a roomba, spend the extra money and get one too.

Pleasantly surprised on how well this works. We figured it would not be as good as a higher priced robot but it works great. We cannot believe how much it picks up.

At first this was a great way to keep up with a shedding dog. After a week though it would not keep its programmed schedule and we were having to manually start it. When we opt for a robot vacuum in the future we will go with a Roomba.

When I received this product, I was a little skeptical of its ability to really serve as what I would consider to be "useful". It more than fit that bill, while proving that technology has really come a long way in the appliance department. My first test was just how easy is it to get this up and running - vacuuming the floor with a standard vacuum cleaner takes little to no effort from a mental standpoint; power on and push. I have to say, it was extremely easy. Turn the power on, and off it goes. No digital knowhow. No set up procedure. No complicated series of button presses. Just let it rip. Once it started, I watched as the vacuum meticulously traversed the floor, diving into every reachable nook and cranny, whether under chairs or tables, it was spot on. So much so, that it reminded me of a human who doesn't want to miss a spot. It covered the entire floor, even in ways my normal vacuuming would not - it has rotating whiskers that brush edges as it reaches them and the device is round which allows it to approach certain edges a lot better than a standard vacuum. After watching it perform for a while, I closed the door, shut off the light, and let it finish doing its thing. When I returned to the room, it was completely vacuumed and the robot had accurately returned to its charging station. Good deal. As for the other features, included is a device used to generate a false wall - useful when you have an open floor, but only want part of it vacuumed, or for the stairs in an upstairs hallway. This was very handy and seems to function as advertised. The charging station also has a display allowing you to set a schedule for the vacuum to work. You can set a schedule for days/times you would like the floors vacuumed, and I said before, the unit returns to the charging station upon completion. The device does well on most surfaces. I gave it a slight hit on performance because it can't be used on heavy shag floor rugs (tube-like especially), and you will have to account for such cases when necessary. It also can be a little loud if you are in the room. It's not very loud, but I guess there is a certain expectation when you are using a device that you expect to work without intervention. Great robot vacuum with good flexibility and features.

    A solid robot vacuum

So lets begin with the purpose of this vacuum (or any other robot vacuum for that matter). This vacuum is NOT intended on replacing your standard upright, nor will it. With that said, the Bissell Smartclean is good at what it does and has features that are handy. This vacuum will definitely pick up your children's cheerios, your dogs hair, dust, and small items. It will not deep clean your carpet or pick up heavy items. One of its strengths is cleaning the edges. Those little bristles reach the edges well. As a first time owner, the first thing I noticed when I turned it on is how loud it was. I guess I expected this small vacuum to be quiet. It's not obnoxiously loud but if you are watching tv or trying to listen to ambient music, the vacuum will override that. Not a big deal anyway because regular vacuums are louder and the best use for a robot vacuum is while you are away in my opinion. The Smartclean is a smart robot vacuum in the sense that it can easily perform a 180, and can get in and out of tight spaces with ease. It has a front bumper in the front half which when bumped, will back up a bit and readjust. Also if it goes under something, the bumper will feel if it is about to get stuck and also backs up. Under the vacuum there are 2 inward-spinning soft brushes which scoop dirt into the roller. This is especially effective on hard floors (tile or hardwood). However, one of my bigger gripes with it is on carpet. The roller under the Smartclean is very tiny (just over 4 inches in length) so as you can imagine, it won't pick up a whole lot. Also, the spinning bristles are not super effective on carpet. It will work on carpet, just not as well as it works on hard floors. Before using, you just have to ensure that the area is decluttered but the instructions will tell you that. Just like when you vacuum normally, this thing will try to suck up a sock or get stuck on a blanket if it goes over it. There are 5 different settings (spirals, along the walls, Z formation, random, or auto). the fan has 2 speeds, normal, and turbo. Clean up is easy as you just pull the little container out and clean the filter with a soft brush. The unit docks itself automatically after the specified cleaning period. It also comes with an "invisible wall." Its a small stand that shoots out a signal in a straight line which the vacuum will not cross over. This is just in case you only want it to clean a specific area of this house. It is not needed for the edge of a stair since it is smart enough not to fall down the stairs. Overall, this robot vacuum does a good job if you know what to expect.

Owned the Bissell for only two months and return because it broke. I replaced it with the 650 Roomba and have been very happy. I can not recommend this product. Put a little extra money with it and buy the roomba. I bought the lowest end 650 and it blows the bissell away..

Was able to use it for a few days and I thought it worked great. Only issue was it was somewhat noisy but since the dog would be the only one home when I planned to use it, that was not going to be a problem. However, I had to return it because it cannot swim. See the picture above where it is stopped at the head of the stairs. This implies it will not go over the edge. It will. It wandered out on the patio/pool deck, found its way to the pool and dived right in. I found it drowned on the bottom of the pool.

This little guy works great on the main level of my house, all hardwood and tile floors. It would not transition up onto any of the area rugs, but they are pretty thick with thick pads. Its smallness does come in handy getting under chair support bars and lower overhead areas. The first time I ran it, it was pretty loud on the hardwood, so I left. It didn't make it back to the charger, it had found a cat toy wand with cloth rope lead and wound that rope lead around one of its axles. It errored out and awaited my return. I totally had not seen the offending object before setting it to run. It took a bit to get the rope out, but I set it to return to the charging station to test that. That is when I noticed it seems as completely random in attempting to find its way back to the charge station as it does in determining its cleaning path(s). It would probably be a lot more efficient from a battery use and return to charger standpoint and reliable on the cleaning if it had more smarts on the position tracking, but that is probably in the arena of a much more expensive unit. The outer rotating brushes seem to do a good job pushing dust and small debris into the main vacuum area. Those outer brushes worked really well running along the walls. It will not replace weekly or bi-weekly cleaning on the floors, but it should really help with keeping it clean during the week. The electronic wall seems to work for about 10 feet of distance. The scheduling function of the base worked when I tested it, but I will probably just use it manually when needed due to the noise level where I can assure that it won't be bothering anybody. The noise was only slightly louder on turbo mode, and not much difference in the amount of debris/hair picked up from the hardwood. All in all a decent basic robotic vacuum assistant.

    Beat my expectations, surprisingly good

The holiday season is a perfect time to pick one of these up. With all the visitors, shopping and running around going on, removing vacuuming from your chore list could be a big help. My expectations weren't too high for this, as robot vacuums typically cost hundreds of dollars and don't pick up as well as comparably priced vacuum cleaners. But Bissell priced this one below most competitors, without really compromising on quality. Likes: -Longer than expected battery life. It's also able to charge from its own base so it shouldn't be an issue. -Picked up more dirt than I expected it to. -Smart enough to turn off brush when riding over rug fringe. Didn't like: -Noisier than expected, but it is a vacuum so you shouldn't really expect silence. If you have a small apartment, you'll want to schedule it to run while you're not home, not while you're asleep. -I have one carpet in the basement playroom that has large color blocks and thick black lines. When I tried to use the Bissell on this carpet, it got confused, basically getting itself trapped inside a 3'x4' color square in the carpet. It wouldn't go past any of the thick black lines so my guess is the black lines confused it. -Smallish dirt container will need to be emptied regularly. Final thoughts? Set this up on a daily schedule and let it handle the daily maintenance vacuuming. I use it in what I call "set it and forget it" mode. After watching it do the initial clean, I just let it go about its own business. I get the most use out of it by setting it up in a high traffic room that gets crumbs and dirt from kids running around. It's been cleaning that area since the last Thanksgiving guests left and has been doing a solid job.
