Blade Runner 4k Review

It's crazy this movie is more than 40 years old and looks more stylish and creative than nearly every movie that came out in the last ten years. And I'm happy to own this in a pristine 4k disc format. The colors in the Final Cut look a bit more "greenish" than the previous versions, but this is what Ridley Scott envisioned, so I'm okay with it.
The sounds are great too. I don't own BR2049 yet, so maybe this will soon be outdated, but this movie has the best sounding synth sounds in a 4k disc I've seen. The uncompressed beauty of Vangelis's score is still awe inspiring.
One part that could've been better in this disc is the grain. This movie appears more grainy than other shot-on-film 4ks I've seen, but it's only in a few scenes. Though on the other hand, I am a fan of grain, but some very obsessed fans might not like it lol

This movie is a cinematic masterpiece & a must buy. The case came in pristine edition compared to my previous Amazon purchases which is much appreciated. Fast & free shipping was also a plus.

I recently bought the new one and loved it, so I wanted to see the first one. I new it was a somewhat cult classic, I just never got around to seeing it. I did enjoy it, but it definitely has the feel of an early 80’s movie. It reminds me of 80’s music videos.. a little on the strange side. However, the 4K presentation is top notch! For a movie this old, they did an absolute fantastic transfer. At the end of the day, I’m happy that I picked it up and will watch it again. I just like the new one better.

Such a good movie, so glad I bought it on 4K while it was on sale! Cover is pretty wrinkly and it could look better, but still pleased with my purchase.

My absolute favorite Sci-Fi film realized and magnificently restored in stunning 4K HDR is absolutely stunning.
Not only is Blade Runner (classic) a masterpiece of a film; perfectly written and directed but, the restoration of the original negative to mind-blowing 4K HDR resolution leaves me in awe. While the film's filter grain is accentuated in UHD, it is not necessarily a bad thing. Lights and lense flares are "punchy" and bright while colors are vivid and deep without disrupting the mood and tone of what the film was meant to capture.
I highly recommend picking up this 4K UHD blu-ray if you can find it. It is a perfect demonstration of what 4K HDR can do for even films that are 30+ years old (but, that depends on the source and studio doing the restoration of course).

pros:
New update features like HDR which the movie looks better than ever especially on an OLED.
This Atmos soundtrack has a high level of surround from all angles & height overhead effect that I enjoyed on my 11.2 (7.2.4)

Best Old Movie 4K Transfer

My collection of 4K HDR movies is growing and I have what are considered some of the best reference quality 4K movies out there ... Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Dunkirk, Passengers, & Blade Runner 2049 just to name a few. All of these are the best 4K HDR has to offer with rich vibrant colors and sharp pictures. The quality of these movies will spoil you to anything else you watch and you really get disappointed when you get an older movie that's been transferred to 4K and HDR .... Most of the time ... so much so that I stopped buying anything but new movies in 4K HDR. Older movies tend to look better in 1080 just up-converted by your TV or Blu-Ray player! However, this movie, the original Blade Runner, is a huge exception and is incredible ... I just couldn't believe how good the picture was. I'd read reviews raving about the transfer to 4K but I wasn't expecting it to be this good. If you were to nit-pick it you'd definitely drop it a few points compared to say the new Blade Runner 2049, but really, and considering it's a 1982 film, there's NOTHING to complain about as far as picture quality is concerned. It's unbelievably colorful and sharp and is MUCH better that a MOST newer movies transferred to 4K. Whether you like the original Blade Runner movie from the story line standpoint or not doesn't take away the visual enjoyment of watching this movie ... it's really, from a technical standpoint, that good.

You know what you are getting here and you either love it or hate it, so I'm not going to rehash the story other than to say it starts slow, but after some time it really gets going so stick with it if you are a new viewer.
This is the part most people want to know, so here it is.
The 4k transfer is very good, but not as great as some of the experts claim it to be. You get a highly detailed movie with great color depth and contrast.
There is a fair amount of noise and film grain present that ranges from moderate to slightly higher depending on the scene. Dark scenes display the greatest amount of noise as usual.
Could the image quality be better? Yes, I think so, but there are always tradeoffs during the transfer process. Incorporate techniques to remove noise and the images get softer, so all-in-all I am glade they did not incorporate high levels of digital noise reduction. I mean, if your buying the 4k version, you want it to look sharp, not soft, and they achieved that, however, I think it could have been better.
The picture noise isn't Terminator 2 level, but it is a bit higher than I would like. When sitting at proper distances from the television, it doesn't overwhelm you.
I would recommend this 4k transfer.

I can't say enough great things about this film so I'll just get on with what's new. The two big differences from earlier versions are that the 4K looks absolutely stunning. It makes the iconic sets look better than ever and really shows how much effort went into the look and feel of this movie. The fact that they got so much detail from a 40+ year old film is incredible. The other jaw dropper here is the audio track. The audio mix is done so incredibly well that it bests most all new titles out today. I watched/listed to this on my ATMOS home theater and was blown away by the sound. Such great sound detail, depth, and placement of objects and movement, along with the wonderful soundtrack that graces this movie, and you have the best version of one of the best movies ever made. A true masterpiece!

It's a close race between Blade Runner and The Fifth Element. Which one appears more times within a given individual's home video collection?
I really thought The Final Cut on HD-DVD / Blu-Ray would be it for Blade Runner. Where else do you go from there? Well as it turns out, there was even more awesome to be had... this UHD release (at least the main feature) is significantly superior in terms of image and sound.
For anyone who has never seen Blade Runner... THIS is the way to see it. If you like cyberpunk/sprawling high-tech megalopolis settings, this is must-see material, as it was hugely influential on numerous beloved properties that would follow... things like Ghost in the Shell, Syndicate [video game], and the Fifth Element and others drew major visual inspiration from this film.
But it's not all style... there is substance here, too.
But really, if you're interested in this release, you probably already know the film and own it on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, and/or Blu-Ray. So then the question becomes, "is it worth rebuying?" And the answer is "YES! A resounding yes!" The higher resolution and bitrate makes a meaningful difference, HDR makes the neon and spinner sirens on those rain-soaked streets POP, and the Atmos audio track is incredible!

A master class of cinema. The look...the feel. And to think it was made in '82! Great movie! It's not an action movie like "Die Hard" or "Lethal Weapon", those are great, fun movies. "Blade Runner" is a deep, thought provoking film. If you haven't watched it, then do see it from beginning to end . If you end up liking it definitely watch "Blade Runner 2049". This movie gets "Two Thumbs up....final holiday fun".

The movie itself is iconic. It blazed new ground in cinema and was way ahead of its time. The 4K version is amazing. The views from the flying cars of the city and Tyrell corporation is stunning. Watch carefully for how clear the lights on the building look. This is one of the best dystopian movies of our time and this 4k copy doesn't let the viewer down. Well worth the price.

I am a hard core "Blade Runner" fan. I own every single version of this movie. VHS, BETA, Laserdisc, Including the Criterion Collection Laserdisc, DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, now this 4K Final Cut version.
Ridley Scott out did himself with this remastered 4K version. I doubt, when it premiered in 1982 in theaters, that it looked & sounded anything like this version.
1st the audio. From the first bass hit of Vangelis legendary score. On every single previous version that first hit was always distorted. No matter what amp, speakers or subwoofer I had. No matter how I tweaked the audio. It was always distorted. Now its clean, clear, & I can literally feel it. When we see L.A., that first blast from the refinery goes off. Again its clear, crisp. When the spinner car flys by. You hear and feel it go past you on your left. Every single line of dialouge is crystal clear. Every drop of rain, every footstep, is crystal clear.
2nd the visual. Enough can not be said. It was already a visually stunning work. Ill put it this way. I was already excited when I got this 4K version. My wife sat down next to me to watch it. (Only because Harrison Ford is in it.) From the moment the Ladd company logo came on. In its bright green color & below it the Sir Run Run Shaw in red popped up I was impressed. Again, just like the audio. Both were always distorted and blurry in every previous version. Now they were razor sharp, defined, and very clear.
When the film fades to that overhead shot of L.A. Never before was this opening scene so, razor sharp, defined, balanced, clean, composed, so focused. My jaw hit the ground. Then the cut to Holdens eye. You could at last clearly see the reflection in it of what he is seeing. I just sat there completely stunned.
My wife asked me "Are you okay?" I slowly turned to her and said. "Oh my gawd. This is beyond what I had imagined. I have never seen this moive like this
It feels like Im seeing this movie for the first time."
I do like the changes and edits Riddley Scott made with this Final Cut. One eliminates the massive visual disconnect in a critical scene. In another scene he corrects the audio disconnect between what we are seeing and what we hearing. Not to mention fixes a very important part of the story with another audio edit at the beginning.
The scene between Rachel & Decker at his apartment after Leon is retired. We see something very clearly for the first time. (not going to spoil it but its been a subject of debate since this movie came out. More so now that BR 2049 was made)
I own other "remastered" movies. But none of those can touch this one. (Except for one that just came out.)
This movie should be the standard for any and all future 4K remasters. If other studios cant match this one. They are wasting thier time, money not to mention thier fans time and money.
If you are a fan of Blade Runner. This is a must have.
If you are fan of cinema this is also a must have for you too. Why, you ask? This movie was a big influence on this generations greatest movie director. Christoper Nolan.
Finally. Without this movie. We dont get the anime "Ghost in the Shell". Without "Ghost in the Shell" we dont get "The Matrix." Without "The Matrix" we dont get the 21st century movie scifi genre we have now.

One of my favorite movies of all time, the original Bladerunner is a sci-fi classic and arguably one of the greatest ever made (we can throw any of Dennis Villeneuve’s movies in there too). This final D-cut version gives you everything you would desire and more.

For a movie this old the new 4K HDR Master is a AWESOME!!! Sure some of the effects are dated or the method used are dated, but yeah.. It's an older film. That being said the clarity and the colors !!!! WOW!!! Now you can't believe the film is actually as old as it is. The sound is well down too, voices are clear, effects are crisp, and the ambience will put you in the scenes. A good about of bonus features, although I haven't gotten to viewing them yet. Don't want to take my words for it, cool. Read the professional reviews out there, this is THE ULTIMATE VERSION OF BLADE RUNNER!!
