I am a fan of the game boy advance and DS castlevania games. The creator behind those games created this one and I am enjoying it. It’s the HD castlevania/metroidvania I wanted.

A must buy for any Castlevania fans, this is the spiritual successor and it doesn't disappoint. This is my GOTY for 2019. Looks amazing on the Xbox One X with 4K visuals, this is the place to play it.

This is a crowd-funded, spiritual-sequel to Castlevania. Consensus is very positive.

The core game has everything fans would want from an Igavania, but suffers from crippling performance issues that hold it back from greatness. Basic things like hit detection and input lag shouldn't be a problem for a game that spent so many years in development. Loading screens stall and make you believe a crash is pending. Parts of background art assets appear and disappear like they're phasing in and out of existence. Attacks occasionally fail to execute. What truly disappoints is the fact that so many other titles supervised by Koji Igarashi never suffered these problems. Sure, the DS Vanias were in 2D, but they seamlessly included 3D models in backgrounds and some bosses. The Dracula X Chronicles was a 2D game built with a 3D graphical engine, and had none of the issues exhibited in Bloodstained. Yes, this is an independent title that didn't benefit from the resources of a major publishing studio, but the performance issues touch on areas so fundamental to games you wonder how they were able to persist so long into the development process. If you can look past the bugs and graphical issues, and you're a fan of Metroidvanias (and Igarashi in particular), there's enough good stuff here to make putting up with the nuisances well worth it. Long-running fans of all things Castlevania will find themselves making disappointed comparisons to previous series highs like Symphony of the Night and Dawn of Sorrow. I started this game late, too, so the first major update installed prior to me creating a new save file. Maybe the experience will be better after a few more rounds of patches?

Bloodstained is the best side-scrolling Igavania game yet-- a huge castle to explore, with lots of secrets to uncover. This game was 4 years in the making, and you can tell with the level of detail in the story, equipment, shards (powers), and graphic. There are little nuggets that nod to horror genres of all kind, and of course to past Castlevania games. The visual fidelity on the XBox One X in 4K is the best I've seen yet. I also have it on the PS4 Pro 4K, and on the same UHD screen, I am able to get better clarity on the Xbox One X version. Either way, whatever platform you are on, Bloodstained is a fantastic game with hours and hours to continue to explore! Wonderful symphonic soundtrack too!
