I’ve seen a lot of people comment on this on other sites but it has a very strong odor that didn’t go away. I thought it was an issue with it being new. Made me and my family dizzy and nauseous and wound up returning it.

I’m a born skeptic but also a dust allergy sufferer too, so I got the BlueAir 211i Max with a bit of doubt mixed with a dash of hope. After using it for just a few days my initial thought is that hope was strong stuff because this air purifier seems to be working as advertised to rid my home’s first level of nasty particles, especially dust. The BlueAir 211i Max’s indicators tell me my air is clean, but more importantly the nose knows. This air purifier is a simple device; it’s basically a filter, a fan, and some electronics. In fact if you look at a picture of it the entire non-white part is actually a replaceable filtration system and the top white part is the brains and fan. The gray fabric is actually a removable, machine washable pre-filter. Blue also sells these in other colors to match your decor. That’s a very clever design because being both functional while simultaneously improving aesthetics. That’s always been my qualm about buying one – that it wouldn’t blend in with the room. BlueAir could have taken it a step further and had the pre-filter extend to the white part just make it more attractive, but it’s still the best-looking air purifier out there. Under the pre-filter is the actual filter which requires replacing every 6-9 months. BlueAir calls it HEPASilent, which I learned is because it’s not HEPA certified. Kind of confusing. BlueAir says it’s better than HEPA. I’m not a scientist so I can’t say one way or the other. I just like how the 211i Max performs. Supposedly a light will illuminate on the unit when that replacement time comes. These filters are rather expensive so it’s important to factor them into the cost of the unit’s ownership. On the topic of general design and presence, the unit, while large – it’s nearly 2 feet tall and a tad over a foot wide and deep – is not that heavy but it is a bit awkward to move around. It would be a nice improvement if future models incorporated hand grips to make that task easier. At the top of the unit is a LED touch control panel. (The control panel’s functionality is duplicated in the available iOS and Android apps for remotely adjusting the unit). Available “switches” are power, auto mode on/of, manual fan speed 1-4, and night mode. There are also indicator lights for Wi-Fi connection and real-time pollutants being collected, which is pretty cool. A multi-colored light on the front also indicates air quality based on 5 different colors to show: excellent, good, moderate, polluted, and very polluted air quality. If the control panel LEDs are a distraction they can be dimmed or turned off most easily through the app. Continuing on the simplicity theme, if you want to use the app, Wi-Fi set up is quick. First download the BlueAir app from your respective app store -- it’s not required, but very convenient. Launch the app and follow the set up – basically entering in your router’s password, and that’s it, ready to use. If you don’t care to use the app then just turn the 211i Max on, nothing else to do. Well maybe. By default, the purifier starts on auto mode. At least in my case, this started out in the equivalent of manual level 1 with air coming out like a whisper, as it reported my air was already “excellent.” My doubts reared their ugly head again. How could such a low level of air could clean a 500 sq ft room. I don’t have pets, but I do have lots of windows and with that dust. I can see it catching the light sometimes before crashing to the floor, and if I can’t see it, my nose sniffles tell me it’s lurking. So, I thought I’d help it out a little and turned it up to manual 3 to get the air circulating well. The fan is quite aggressive at this level. I clocked the noise at about 37dB ten feet away, which is clearly audible in a quiet room. I left the house for a bit and when I returned it just smelled cleaner, though the particle level remained the same as when it was on auto, flickering between 0 and 5. I then put it on auto for the rest of the day and night and all was fine. Auto seems to always stay a the equivalent of manual 1, but probably because it reports my air being “excellent.” Noise at this level is virtually inaudible. Even manual 2 can barely be heard. The following day I moved the unit upstairs, but this time kept it on auto and left for the day. On return I didn’t notice the “fresher” air as I did the previous day, so I kicked up the fan again to 3 and went for a walk. That did the trick. So, I would say on first start don’t use auto but rather set it to manual on one of the higher speeds and let it run for a while before going back to auto mode. I’ll also mention that manual 4 is quite loud – around 60 dB right next to it and 50 db ten feet away. If you have the TV on it can become “white noise,” but I wouldn’t want to listen to it in a quiet room. So bottom line for me is my house feels fresher and I breathe easier. This could be a placebo effect because I’m not a long-term owner yet. But if these last few days are any guide I don’t think my nose is lying to me and I’m going to enjoy this purifier for a while, and probably will have to get a second for upstairs.

I couldn’t handle the odor, and need to return the unit. Online reviews in Reddit indicated this is a common problem with the Blueair carbon filters, which unfortunately are glued to the main filter. No way to remove the carbon filter. I don’t know why Consumer Reports didn’t catch this problem.

Why does this brand new 211i max purifier smell so bad? I've had it for a few days and every time it leaves a horrible chemical smell. I am getting dizzy and nauseous from this bad smell. I bought it to clean the air but instead it leaves it smelling disgusting. I was really excited for it but now I'm sad cause I'll have to return it. Only plus is that it is very very quiet.

Works great for about 1 yr. After 1.5 yrs use, regular (daily) outside filter cleaning & every 3 mo internal filer change, the filter as a whole no longer works (no touch controls, no display, just a flashing bluetooth light). Will be reaching out to BlueAir manufacturer but i dont expect any results.

Useless. Stopped working after 5 months. Around the 4-month mark, it would claim to have cleared the air after cooking but you could still smell it, even the next day. By 5 months it started this weird thing of clocking the particles at 400, then 500, then 100, then 10 then 450 all within seconds. Still hoping to get help from Best Buy and/or the manufacturer but that's another story.

In today's world, where air quality is a growing concern, having a reliable air filter is essential. The Blue Air Blue Pure 211i Max is a standout product that offers impressive features and benefits, ensuring cleaner air for your space. As someone who has family members who suffer from allergies, having an environment with clean air and devoid of allergens is important. With its advanced technology, improved performance, and convenient controls, this air filter provides a powerful solution for maintaining a healthy indoor environment, especially during cold and flu season and in the context of COVID protection. Powerful Cleaning Performance: The Blue Pure 211i Max boasts an impressive 83% more air cleaning power compared to older generation Blue Air filters, ensuring exceptional air purification. This enhanced performance is complemented by the proprietary HEPASilent™ technology, a unique combination of electrostatic and mechanical filtration. With this technology, the filter captures at least 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.1 micron, making it highly effective against common pollutants and allergens. Fast and Efficient Operation: One of the standout features of the Blue Pure 211i Max is its efficiency in cleaning the air. With the ability to clean 635 sq feet in just 12.5 minutes or up to 1,524 sq feet in 30 minutes, this air filter ensures that your space remains fresh and free from pollutants. This is particularly important during cold and flu season, as well as in the current context of COVID protection, where maintaining clean indoor air is crucial. Convenient Controls and Monitoring: The Blue Pure 211i Max offers a range of convenient controls and monitoring options to enhance user experience. With five fan speeds, including a Night mode, you can easily adjust the filtration power based on your preferences and specific needs. The air quality readings are provided through an easy LED 5-color indicator, either on the unit or within the app. This allows you to monitor the concentration of fine particles (PM 1, 2.5, and 10) in your space, helping you gauge the effectiveness of the air filter. Smart Features for Added Convenience: This air filter also incorporates smart features that make it a standout choice. The Welcome Home feature ensures that the air purifier goes on standby when you leave home and turns back on as you return, promoting energy efficiency and seamless operation. Moreover, the integrated air sensors and advanced machine learning technology enable the Blue Pure 211i Max to adjust its calculations based on your unique environment. This includes factors such as fan speed, usage time, and pollutant levels, optimizing its performance for maximum effectiveness. Whisper-Quiet Operation: Noise levels are often a concern with air filters, especially when they are used in bedrooms or offices, I for one can’t tolerate filters that are overly intrusive with their operation noise. The Blue Pure 211i Max addresses this with its impressively quiet operation. It operates on low at just 23dB and remains below 53dB even on the highest fan speed. Thanks to this, you can enjoy a peaceful and undisturbed environment while still benefiting from powerful air purification. Longer Lasting Filters and Warranty: With the Blue Pure 211i Max, you can expect longer-lasting filters, reducing the hassle of frequent replacements. Blueair's proprietary RealTrack algorithm accurately tracks filter usage, allowing you to view the most accurate filter status and reorder before it expires. This ensures that you always have fresh filters to maintain optimal air quality. Additionally, by completing the product registration form within 60 days of purchase or through the Blueair mobile app, you can extend the Limited Warranty from one year to an impressive three years, providing peace of mind and confidence in your investment. Conclusion: In conclusion, the Blue Air Blue Pure 211i Max air filter is a top-of-the-line product that delivers exceptional air purification performance. With its powerful cleaning capabilities, advanced HEPASilent™ technology, and convenient controls, it ensures a healthier indoor environment, especially during cold and flu season and for COVID protection. The smart features, quiet operation, and longer-lasting filters further enhance its appeal. By choosing the Blue Pure 211i Max, you can breathe easy knowing that you have invested in a reliable and effective solution to maintain clean and fresh air in your space.

    Ionizing and Produces Ozone

This would be a 5 star purifier if the ionizer could be turned off. We had this purifier for almost two years. Whenever we cooked or had any sort of excess dust in the house, we would get headaches. I assumed it was circumstantial, however after reading that these ionizing purifiers created ozone, I realized it was the result of having this purifier. Do your research and be careful of ionizers. If it allowed you to turn it off it would be a great item.

Best Air Filter I’ve Ever Used

Over my 49 years on this planet I have used (and in some cases built) a huge variety of filters. Most of them were water filters, but many were air filters. In my later years I have used a variety of more modern air purifying systems. Some were HEPA, others used UV or even Ozone. The Blue Air 211i Max is my favorite one I have ever used. My current life situation has put me in a position where I am unfortunately often within several feet of a cat litter box with no door or any other barrier between me and the box. 2 cats and no matter how often I cleaned it (usually 2-3x times there was always a mild to major odor. Kind of gross but it wasn’t something I could really control over the last few months. Then this beauty came into my life. I opened the box, glanced over the manual and turned it on, set to auto and my life has been better ever since! This air filter is amazing. There is the one obvious drawback, in that it is quite large and thus might be hard to find a good place for it. But wow does it clean the air of odors! When I first turned it on it ran on high for several minutes and the odor that seemed to always linger in the air was gone. After that initial cleaning of the air, the auto setting dropped the fan speed to low. In the slower setting I can’t even hear it sitting just several feet away. So not only is it the best and removing airborne odors, it is also incredibly quiet on the low speed. The fan speeds up for a few minutes whenever the litter box is used, but quickly removes any smell and quiets back down. This is an incredible device. After I got it set up I installed the app and checked out some of the other settings. There is a night mode where it sets to low speed and turns off all the LED control panel lights. Along with the auto mode where it senses the air pollution and sets the speed accordingly, there is also a manual setting to pick the speed. The app is solid. You can see when pollution levels change or approximately how much more life the filter has. You can also adjust the brightness of the LED display. Though you don’t need the app at all, there is some interesting information available there. Aesthetically speaking, the looks are good enough. It does blend in to its surrounding despite being so big. All in all I love this device. It’s a little large and a bit pricey. But if it’s in your budget and you have space for it I cannot recommend this thing enough. I’ve never used a Blueair brand air filter before but I am now officially a fan of the company. I look forward to using this thing for years to come and absolutely would recommend it to a friend.
