    Disappointing Performance

I purchased this because this is the Wirecutter's current "budget pick" for small spaces. According to their review, it "performs impressively" (90% particulate reduction in 35 min) for its small size and energy efficiency. I suppose that I can't dispute the latter two points. It is indeed small, and I imagine that the power draw is minimal considering how quiet is when placed on the lowest setting. Now, it's possible that my expectations were too high after reading the Wirecutter's glowing review, but the Blue's actual performance has been somewhat abysmal for my use case. I purchased two units, and placed one in 154 sq. ft bedroom that belongs to a family member who likes to use his electronic vape pod indoors. I'm a little sensitive to the smell, and it seems worse when there's stale air. Well, in the 4 weeks since I've placed this inside his bedroom (running on medium 24/7), I'd say the smell has improved 10-15%. I put the other unit inside my own bedroom (220 sq. ft.), and there does seem to be less dust than usual. But the difference isn't really dramatic. Lastly, two more cons: 1) the highest setting is basically unusable (unless you like the sound of being on the tarmac at LAX), and 2) there's no automatic air quality sensor. I currently have a Coway AP1512HH in the living room and an older Winix 5300 in the loft, and both units run circles around the Blue 411. Granted, those units are twice the size (and price), but I still wish this were a better performer, especially considering how promising it seemed at first.

This air purifier is perfect for my small bedroom. We have forced air heating, and pets, and although our heating system has a filter we still see dust and hair flying around. This simple machine is easy to set-up, being almost ready to go out of the box, and doesn't have confusing options to figure out, just 3 settings, low, medium, and high. I use the machine on low during the day when I am not around, and medium when sleeping (I appreciate the white noise). The highest setting is rather loud, and not as pleasant as others have noted. I have found this setting to be most useful when I am cleaning/dusting/vacuuming and stirring up dust. This will just clear all of that from the air, so it doesn't settle back on surfaces, which is fantastic! The dust accumulation has reduced dramatically since using this, I rarely need to clean/dust, which is an added benefit. I'm an allergy sufferer, and my sinus are clearer when I wake-up when using this. I have not yet replaced the filter, but the current cost, and ease of replacement seem reasonable for the benefits. I like the washable fabric pre-filters, it comes with 2, though I recommend vacuuming it occasionally especially right before your remove it to wash, so the dust doesn't go flying. Simple machine, but works well. My one major complaint, the supposed "night mode" which is supposed to dim the control lights after 7 seconds, is non-existent as far as I can tell, and the lights are bothersome to me when sleeping. I simply took a marker and tinted the lights, but I wish this feature was functional. As this is energy star certified there may be rebates available depending on your location.

Does it work? Sure, but does it work great?

My house was under renovation. I have a dog and the reno at the time is mostly deconstruction on the other side of the house. My dog has serious separation anxiety at places away from home; so I didn't want to stay at a hotel longer than I needed to. I also didn't think it was going to bother me too much before they start on the floors (which won't happen till 2 weeks later). And yet I woke up every morning with itchy red eyes, heaving and coughing, and tired. I researched a bit, and found that BlueAir's big units are the highest rated purifiers on Consumer Report. I didn't want to spend the big money on air purifiers yet, and I saw this Blue Pure 411 on sale at BB for $79.99. I was hoping it to be fantastic, so I could sleep better. First night using this before bed, I turned this thing on highest for like 4 hours in my bedroom; it was really loud. I turned it down low when I did go to bed; it was quiet, no louder than my CPAP (changed my CPAP filters while at it). Next morning, I woke up without heaving and coughing, but my eyes are still itchy and red. I left it on for the whole work day, got home and slept, and same thing next morning. After the third night, my cough is back, no heaving though. I called my insurance company and asked them to put me in a dog friendly hotel ASAP. I used this for 2 days and 3 nights. I almost kept it to be honest, but I did wind up returning it on the very last day that I could return it. I don't know if my expectations for an air purifier that's regularly priced at $99.99 is too high.

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about your experience here. Do you happen to know the square footage of the space where you had the 411? I only ask because that's our smallest unit and it may have been in too large a space to be effective. We can still help here. Begone, allergies!

I'm (almost) allergic to just about everything in the world, so naturally, my indoor allergies are terribad. I had just moved back home when I realized that my worst allergies happen there due to the horrible heating system in place. The heating system is the type with open vent on the floor that blows around all the dust and dirt every time it comes on. Sounds like a dream, right? Yeah, it's definitely my nightmare. I couldn't get any sleep the first few nights I was back at home, so I went to BB and purchased this baby. It looked cool, had great reviews, and was on sale at the time, so I figured, "Why not?" Let me tell you I don't regret a thing... except maybe forgetting to change the filter earlier this week, which has resulted in a terrible allergy assault from which I'm still recovering. Upon changing the filter today, the allergy assault has died down, which it further proof that this thing works. I need to get one for every room in the house so I can breathe easy no matter where I go.

Bought this because of the carbon filter. Others in the price range don't typically have this feature. Got a price match and picked it up. I got it home, opened the box, and it was ready to plug in and turn on. The different colors are a nice feature and one was already on. The fan isn't silent on the higher levels but it isn't excessively loud. It moves a serious volume of air. I do some painting indoors because it has been so cold this year and the carbon filter has done a decent job of removing odors from the small amount of spray painting required. The smell doesn't disappear immediately but it removes that lingering haze and odor far quicker than simply letting it settle on its own. Not the filter's intended purpose but that's part of why I got it.

So I bought this unit for my office. It is a good looking unit and started out o.k. It seemed to be fairly quiet and moved a fair amount of air. After about a month of running it, the unit has gotten progressively louder. Also, The filter cover which I guess is meant to be washable is a disgusting mess. As this is for my office, I guess I am supposed to remove this cover without having dust fly all over the office, transport it home, wash it and bring it back. Not sure who thought this was a good idea. I would challenge anyone with allergies to remove this cover without having their eyes water and turn red and going into a full fledged sneezing attack. Yes, the covers are a cute idea, but they are hardly functional.

This item has tremendously made an impact with the air quality in our bedroom. We sleep better and my allergies seem more under control! I have 2 main issues with this product, the light never dims and it’s difficult to find replacement filters. I have had the unit for 3 months. We have learned to tolerate the light, however, the filter thing is a bummer. I signed up for a subscription through the manufacturer, but is out of stock and gave me a delivery option next month. It’s the middle of allergy season! I really wish Best Buy carried the filters too. My advice- just stock up when you can and prepare for an extra nightlight!

I bought a second unit of this after owning one for almost two months. I'm no expert on air purifiers but I can tell a before and after in the air quality in my room. The device is really light, has three different speed settings and the slowest one it's perfect for sleeping (you really can't hear it). The filter replacement cost $20 and you have to replace it after 6 months, that's cheaper than the $30 GermGuardian air purifier filter replacement (which I used to own). It's a little bit bigger from what I was expecting the first time, but that wouldn't stop me from recommend it.

We now have 3 of these air purifiers in our home. The smaller ones like this are in our bedrooms and in a family room. I love that they have a washable and vacuumable prefilter. We have 2 cats and a Lab so pet fur and dander are abundant. Our first little guy went 6 months without needing a new filter. The filters are reasonably priced though I did have to order from amazon. I wish Best Buy sold them. The only down side is that they are a little loud on setting 3. But 1 or 2 are quite quiet. I highly recommend this product.

I bought this for my bedroom to help with pet dander. It has done a great job overall with improving air quality in my room. It doesn't work miracles and I still need to dust and vacuum on a regular basis to keep the dander to a minimum, but I would 100% recommend this to anybody looking for an air purifier for a medium sized room. Also, it looks pretty cool. Several people have mistaken it for a smart speaker.

This blue air filter made the world of difference during the fires last year. I like that you can wash the outer filter to reuse it, making maintenance also affordable. It's very light. The highest speed you can hear if you're trying to sleep, so I just put it on medium and you can't hear it at all. Very good product for those who want to have clean air for an affordable rate. I'll buy again!

This product works exactly as advertised! I have bad allergies and when using this air purifier in my bedroom, I get a much better night of rest. It’s quiet and doesn’t affect my electric bill. I run it 24/7!!! The outer filter is easy to remove and clean. My only concern is how long the inner filter will last and what it will cost to replace it.

Purchased this during the multiple fires in Northern CA. There was thick, unhealthy haze every where. We ran this night and day in the house. While not quiet at the highest speeds, it was very quiet at the lower settings and it worked great. Price was reasonable. Lots of use were snapping them up. Very happy with the purchase!

Great air purifier! Noticed a great difference in air quality right away the first night with it compared to before. Allergies are now in control. Also helped clean out PM2.5 from the wildfires in CA. Very lightweight and very quiet in it's lowest setting. Easy to move around room to room if needed. Not a distraction when watching TV.

This has been an amazing addition to our household. I have had sinus issue (believed to be due to our cat) and this has almost entirely alleviated them! I keep it on at night as we sleep, and ever since I have woken up feeling more refreshed with no runny nose or itchy eyes! A great product at an affordable price!

I purchased this unit to help clean the dusty, damp basement apartment. I would get congestion and a sore throat after a couple hours of being home every day. Trying to sleep was a nightmare. After a few days of using the air purifier, my congestion and sore throat is gone allowing me to rest peacefully.

I was diagnosed with copd last year. We put this purifier in our bedroom. My breathing has greatly improved! It cuts down on dust, pet fur and dander. The filter lasted six months before we had to replace it. We were surprised at how inexpensive the filter was. So thank you. We are extremely pleased customers.

My fiancé has really bad seasonal allergies, so when we put this in the bedroom over night, she isn’t waking up sneezing and giving up like she would without it. Absolutely love it. The noise isn’t too bad either. Not much louder than a regular fan.
