Looks and Sounds Amazing!

The Bose Smart Soundbar 300 looks and sounds amazing. The sound quality improvement over the tiny speakers in a flat panel TV, is truly a night and day difference. It is amazing that a speaker with such a small footprint can produce sound this powerful. Not only is the soundstage wide and spacious, due to the side firing speakers, but the bass is defined and strong. Dialogue is also noticeably understandable and clear.
Highlights:
Superb Sound Quality, Strong Bass, Dolby Digital Decoding, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, Advanced Voice Commands, Wireless Sub and Wireless Rear Speaker Ready, Works With Other Bose Products, Compatible With Many Music Services
Sound Quality:
This soundbar is for someone that wants superior sound but doesn't want, or have room for, a separate surround sound system. I am very impressed that this compact soundbar produces sound this good, without a subwoofer. Bose engineering and quality components really make the difference. Music and movies sound big, detailed, and pleasing to the ears. I especially noticed how remarkably clear dialogue is.
At some point, the audiophile in me will want to explore adding the wireless bass module and wireless surround speakers. Adding a subwoofer will increase the bass level, and adding surround sound speakers will create a true rear soundstage. I would fully expect that these add ons will create a very capable surround sound system. The product specifications indicate that it is capable of Dolby Digital decoding.
Setup
If you don’t already have a Bose account, the first step is to download the Bose Music App and create an account. I already use the Bose App with my Bose Home Speaker 300, so all I had to do was use the add speaker option. Once done, I can now control and use each speaker individually or together to play music.
The next step is to plug in the soundbar and connect it to the TV with an HDMI or optical cable. Using an HDMI cable is a better option because the advanced functions won’t work over optical. ARC can automatically select the proper input based on the active device signal. ARC also allows you to use your TV remote to raise or lower the soundbar volume. Make sure to disable the TV speakers so that sound is only produced by the soundbar.
The Bose App automatically detects the soundbar and guides you through a pairing process that involves connecting to Wi-Fi, setting up Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, and selecting the music providers you are going to use. I have attached some screen shots to illustrate the process.
Design and Controls:
The Bose Smart Soundbar 300 speaker is compatible with Alexa or Google Assistant, but not both at the same time. You have to choose one or the other. I am using it with Alexa and am completely blown away by how advanced and powerful the voice options are. Bose has taken voice control to the next level. You can tell Alexa to do virtually anything that one of your remote controls can do. If the device is connected via HDMI to your TV, then you can use your voice to control it. But keep in mind that this control will only work over ARC, because it uses the CEC capability to run the commands.
This soundbar features a very attractive black finish that will look great anywhere you put it. The packaging and presentation are exactly what you would expect from Bose.
The speaker can be controlled by the Bose Music App or included remote. The Bose App is very easy to use, and offers quite a few options that are worth exploring and experimenting with.
This soundbar can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Apple Airplay 2. I have multiple Apple devices, so my preferred connection is AirPlay 2, which works through Apple Music if the speaker is connected to Wi-Fi. I prefer AirPlay 2 since it operates over Wi-Fi the range and signal strength is greater than Bluetooth. It can also pair wirelessly to some Bose headphones.
The Bose App offers a wide array of music and entertainment providers. Numerous music, radio, talk, and news providers are available.

I like Bose products because of their overall sound quality, sound technology and how they create such spacious sound with their speakers. Also their build quality is always high quality. This soundbar does not come short.
This soundbar 300 is tiny but powerful. It looks simple and clean with the Bose black color. It measure just a little more than 27 1/4” wide, it is 4” deep and just 2” high (2 3/16” with the feet). So if you have a 65” or bigger TV, you might want the bigger versions of this, the 500 or 700. But don’t get me wrong, this soundbar will do just fine with big screens. I am using it as a computer speaker with my 27” monitor. It is my perfect computer speaker. I also connect my iPad and iPhone to it using AirPlay 2 and it works perfectly. You have to use the Bose Music app to configure it to use AirPlay. It also has WiFi (2.4GHz & 5GHz) and Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity. You can pair a compatible Bose speakers & headphones and according to Bose, any Bluetooth speaker with their SimpleSync feature. I synced my Bose Soundlink Revolve and my Sony soundbar it worked fine. Good for filling the whole house with sound. It has two touch buttons on the top left of the soundbar, microphone mute and action buttons. The action button is for activating your preferred voice assistant (Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa are built-in) and microphone mute to basically disable the voice assistant or privacy. It comes with a basic remote with a soft silicon feel on the face. It is IR so you have to point it directly at the soundbar. It has one HDMI port for ARC (Audio Return Channel) support. It supports CEC (Consumer Electronic Control) for controlling TVs and other AV equipment. It also has an Optical IN (optical cable is included).
The sound production is like every Bose that I’ve had which is very clear highs, good solid bass, good mids for voices and spacious sound. It does not support Dolby Atmos but the sound is dispersed pretty good and fills a good size room. The bass is clear and deep enough for music. You can feel more of the bass at a distance sitting and standing position as opposed to sitting down right in front of it. If you want more immersive sound you can add a Bose Bass Module and Surround Speakers. For me, I use this in my computer room and it is perfect for me without those add ons. I use it for mostly listening to music and occasional movies and this soundbar makes that experience so much better. I watched the Greyhound movie on Apple TV+ and it did a great job clearly producing all the clear dialogue with all the action. I’m really happy with it.
What I wish it had. Dolby Atmos. A remote with sound presets for EQ. An included wall bracket (sold separately).
Download the Bose Music app for customization for these notable features:
- Dialogue mode; adjusts the tonal balance of speakers to improve the clarity of spoken words for movies, tv shows and podcasts
- Tone adjustments; center channel, Bass & treble
- Configure sync & delay; audio delay 0 - 200ms
- Add compatible speakers; group speakers
- Configure voice assistant (Assistant, Alexa)
- Add audio streaming providers (iHeart, TuneIn)
- Power settings

I’ve been a Bose fan for a very long time now and their latest soundbar doesn’t disappoint. Its small yet the sound stage appears to be 5x the actual size of the speaker. Wizardry at its finest!
Pros:
• Sleek and thin
• Spacious soundstage
• Impressive bass
• Supports Apple Airplay
• Voice assistance and voice control
Cons:
• Proprietary wall mount and not included
• Recommends HDMI ARC but doesn’t provide cable
• Basic remote
• Doesn’t work the best in entertainment built-ins
• No physical volume buttons
It’s a very impressive soundbar. The initial setup wasn’t the greatest. I consider myself to be pretty techy but with the lack of a proper manual, setup took longer than I would have liked. It comes with an optical cable but recommends HDMI ARC if you want Google or Alexa to be able to control your TV. Nowhere does it spell that out for you. Here is my setup. Xfinity cable box with HDMI “out” to HDMI “in” on my 4k LG TV. Then HDMI ARC port on my TV to the soundbar’s HDMI port. Then go into your TV’s settings and make sure the sound output is set to HDMI ARC.
There is a Bose app that can help with basic setup and acts like a pseudo remote and adjust bass and treble settings. In fact, I’m not even sure if you can even adjust those EQ settings without the app so keep that in mind that it’s initially phone or tablet dependent upon setup. With that being said, I do wish that there are more buttons on the actual soundbar. I appreciate the sleekness but volume, power button, and input are pretty important functions. I do use Google and Alexa voice commands but sometimes I like actual buttons for me to push. It would be a remiss of me if I didn’t talk about the “smart” aspects of the soundbar. The integration of Google and Alexa is brilliant. You can setup one or the other and not both at the same time. I’m primarily a Google assistant guy but Alexa has the extra “Voice4Video” feature that Google doesn’t support. Long story short, if you want to use your voice to turn on the TV or change to a particular channel, you will need to setup Alexa. I do want to point out that it’s a hit or miss if Alexa will turn my TV on or off with a simple voice command. Sometimes it works, sometimes it says “ok” but doesn’t do it. I don’t believe it’s a Bose issue, just an Alexa skill not connecting with my LG TV as well as I would like.
Saving the best for last, the sound portion of this review. At first glance at the thin soundbar, I was skeptical that it would perform. Boy was I wrong. The soundbar has great bass and the vocals are clear as day. The side firing speakers hidden in the soundbar uses your walls to help with sound separation. It’s a pretty brilliant feat. The soundbar sounds best if its resting on a hard surface. The soundbar can be hung, but requires a special non-universal mount from Bose. And the sound won’t nearly be as good as it needs a solid surface below it to produce those low notes. Do keep in mind that the soundbar needs clear and unobstructed views of the side walls for the magical surround sound to happen. If you’re placing the soundbar in a “built in” TV stand and the opening is only as wide as your TV, then your results will not be ideal. I had to place the soundbar as far on the edge as I can in my built-in TV cabinet to optimize the side firing speakers. Minor nuances but worth it. Once you have it setup with your preferred level of bass/treble and placement, be prepared to be surrounded by sound. You won’t believe what you are hearing. The first time I listened to “July” by Noah Cyrus, I had the chills as the harmonized parts filled the room while her voice came straight from the center channel. It felt like I was there in a private concert. Super awesome.
In summary, I do recommend the soundbar if you’re looking for a one speaker setup to act like a surround sound. It does a great job in a small package that won’t over take your living space. The smart features are nice additions and can easily become your smart speaker for the living room.

It breaks my heart to rate the speaker like this. My Sony tv speaker has more depth and fullness in sound quality than does this. The voice sound is incredibly hollow. We downloaded the app and tried to make adjustments but still the quality didn’t change enough to make me feel good about spending $400. I normally go crazy for Bose products which I why I hit the bullet on this. Returning. I’m sure spending another $400 to buy the subwoofer would improve it exponentially but I just don’t have that kind of money, Maybe for a living room but this is just a bedroom tv.

I have a 65inch Samsung 4K TV that is awesome but the sound was not the greatest. Obviously a sound bar would complete the package.
I have had a sound bar before and honestly wasn't excited to own another one. Why? mostly due to having another remote and fighting with why isn't the sound working or just not in sync. I guess my knowledge was outdated as this Bose 300 is amazing. And I mean WOW...
I am sitting here writing this review while at the same time able to speak to my alexa and change the channel on my pandora which it controls, I then seamlessly can change to amazon music or TV and if I want to turn the channel to a different channel I can just ask alexa etc etc... This review isn't about alexa or google but it is nice that this soundbar just completely changed my value of my TV before I used my cable remote and my samsung tv remote now I dont even have to really reach for either one and I put the remote that came with the soundbar away. So my biggest fear is non existent thanks to this BOSE.
Installation was simple but not competely without issues and by issues it was mostly user error on my part of not hooking up a HDMI connection between the soundbar and the tv. I used the optical audio cable that came with the 300 and it worked but for me to get everything set up on my app it was after I realized that I forgot to hook up the HDMI.
It automatically knows that when the tv is turned off the sound bar is turned off and same when I turn it on.
Sound? I wont even talk about sound I think we all know that Bose is one of the leaders if not the leader in amazing sound.
I cant say enough about this product, It is solid, made well, easy to install and works amazing. I wish it was Sunday so I can enjoy this with some football games on but for now I am loving the music.
Highly recommend it!

Outstanding Bose Smart Soundbar

Unboxing:
I opened the box up and took out the Bose Smart Soundbar 300 and accessories. It came with a power cord, an optical cable and a remote. Everything was well protected and had no damage.
I had already set up my 4K TV with a 4K player and Roku stick.
Connecting the Bose Smart Soundbar 300:
I plugged in the power cord, the optical cable and the HMDI ARC cable (not included). Then I placed the Bose Smart Soundbar in front of the TV below the screen. It was a great fit. But I do need to say that the optical cable is very flimsy and cheap feeling. I would suggest using an after market optical cable that had more substance to it for durability reasons.
The Bose Music App:
I used the Bose Music app to set up the Bose Smart Soundbar for listening. I used my smart phone with the app that walked me through everything. It identifies step by step how to find your Bose product. In this case the Bose Smart Soundbar 300. Using the Bose Music App on my smart phone I had the options to set up Alexa, Google Asst or skip. I chose not to add an assistant, but that is up to your discretion It’s up to you, but you can always go back in the app and add one of them. Lastly I set up Bluetooth and WiFi (have your passwords ready). Once I had accomplished that process, I customized the EQ and was given the option to save several settings. This is helpful for music or movies that accentuate different sounds or frequencies. I then used Bluetooth from my phone to hook and play Pandora through the Bose Smart Soundbar. Worth mentioning if you have trouble hearing dialogue, there is a Dialogue mode that emphasizes speech. This is incredibly handy for movies with a lot of sound going on in the background and you can’t hear what is being said. I noticed the difference but choose to have the dialogue mode off. To me the personal EQ which I made was preferred.
Sound:
Here is a short list of music and movies I listened to critically in order to capture the essence of the Smart Soundbar.
List: 4k Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 Movie, 4k The Matrix, Streamed 4k Avengers Infinity War Movie, Rodrigo Y Gabriella Songs (acoustic guitars), Liam Gallagher Songs – Once and Glimmer (songs), Norah Jones CD Concert and John Mayer in LA Blu-ray. For me this captured a wide range of movie and musical styles that I evaluated.
The sound is multifaceted with layers that are clear even if there is a lot going on (movies or music). The clarity and clean high sounds were bright but not distorted. The mids were solid sounding, without getting muddy or interfering with the highs. The low sounding frequencies are represented but anything that requires deep low bass doesn’t quite come through. You can add a Bose sub if you need that extra bass to fill a room with omni-directional sound. I was positively surprised even without a Bose sub. There is a sweet spot in the Bose Smart Soundbar 300 that plays the mid range to some punchy bass on certain movies or music without a Bose sub. The Bose Smart Soundbar 300 is very fulfilling and satisfying to listen to movies or music. It was not harsh or bloated but sounded natural.
Conclusion:
I was surprised at how big the sound was coming from such a relatively smaller Soundbar. It can easily fill a small, medium or even a large size room, depending settings and volume. I turned up the Bose Smart Soundbar almost up completely and had no distortion. In the loft, where I connected the Bose Smart Soundbar 300 to the entertainment system, the Soundbar filled the house with amazing sound from movies and music. If you are looking for a Soundbar with complete full sounding music or movies (optional sub if you want more bass), have a listen to the Bose Smart Soundbar 300.

THE BREAKDOWN:
Let’s start by saying that this sound bar is not only sleek and beautiful, but it sounds amazing! Compared to my native tv speakers the difference is like night and day. With the speaker’s small footprint, I was worried it wouldn’t give the full sound that I was looking for. I was completely wrong, this speaker had great bass and great highs with no distortion. The audio was very clear and concise, and the bass was punchy!
The sound quality of this speaker is nothing short of amazing! If you are someone that is looking for great sound with a small footprint at a great price, then this speaker is it! I’m sure if you did pair a subwoofer with this soundbar it would really add to the depth and punch of the bass but really, I don’t think you need it. When watching TV show and movies the music sound clear and concise along with the dialog. There wasn’t a time where I felt the sound was distorted in any way.
The setup was not that difficult. First you download the Bose app and log in. If you don’t already have an account, you sign up for one. Once you complete that you connect the soundbar to the TV with the HDMI or optical cable. Just a side note I found out the hard way, if you want to use the full feature you need to use the HDMI instead of the optical cable. When using the HDMI us the one labeled “ARC”.
Next, you follow the instructions on the Bose app where you connect to Wi-Fi and setup Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. You also can setup your music apps such as Amazon Music and TuneIn.
The design of the soundbar is very sleek and even though it is black it is almost elegant looking. There are some hidden lights that you can only see when interacting with the speaker. There are 2 places you can touch on the top of the speaker that can activate the assistant and the other will mute/unmute the speaker. There is a power port, optical port, HDMI port and a service port which look as if it is a USB-C port. For people that are looking to keep a minimal footprint this speaker is definitely designed for you.
The remote is tiny and has a great rubbery feeling on the surface. My one complaint is that the bottom of the remote is plastic only and slick. It slides off my leg or chair arm almost every time.
Just want to quickly mention the Bluetooth option where you can connect it to a device like your phone or tablet. I really, really like this feature as I work from home and I pick up the remote and hit the Bluetooth button and play music from my phone.
PRO’s:
-Sleek and compact
-Amazing audio
-Bluetooth support
-Wi-Fi support for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz
-Virtual assistant is amazing
-Includes optical cable and remote
CON’s:
-No HDMI cable included
-Remote bottom is very slippery
SUMMARY:
Overall, the device was amazing and I would recommend this to a friend if they are in the market for device like this.

This is easily one of, if not the best, compact smart sound bar on the market today. Set up using the Bose Music app was easy/flawless. Setting up to Google Home was the same. This added a smart device to my bedroom and was easily an upgrade to even a high end QLED TV speaker system. This functions very well on a secondary TV without the surround or sub-woofer add on. Sound with out the add on speakers is rich, both TV and music. The great thing is you can up the performance for your main AV system if you would like.
It connects well to other Bose products, love the fact I can connect to my wireless headphones and watch TV at night without disturbing my girlfriend. It operates other devices paired with Google Home flawlessly as well.
Connectivity to a TV is best completed by HDMI and use of ARC. There is included with the unit a optical cable but I prefer the HDMI connection. I also really like the audio adjustments available for movie dialogue.
I would highly recommend this sound bar.

I have 5 TV's with premium high end sound systems all excellent. This small Bose sound bar by itself has better sound and clarity than all of them It paired easily to 55" 4K TV in my 15' X 13' home office and turns on instantly with TV no need to reconnect and sounds great. BUT the remote should be illuminated or lighted useless at night. Some wall mounting brackets for under TV should have been included. The soundbar itself only has small led that flash with volume up and down but no indication of volume level on sound bar or TV. Needs more screen features indicating functions on the soundbar. My most satisfied feature is the quality of BOSE sound is the best other than that I can not recommend this soundbar in that price range there are many other excellent brands. I mounted this on my office wall with my wall shelving brackets.

Rich Sound, Upgradable

Ok, I have 4 other sound bars on my various TV's, one much more expensive, 3 others about the same price as the Bose 300 Soundbar. This is the only one with Google/Alexa built in. I have 7 other smart speakers. My whole house is smart (60+ devices). So this sound bar seemed to fit right in. I'm actually replacing my simple living room sound bar with this one.
First thing to do is to load the Bose Music app to your smart phone, once done it walks you through system configuration and set up, all went very easy. Well done
To begin with I listened to my old soundbar and new Bose. The Bose had a much richer voice range, much better for normal TV listening. My previous soundbar had a sub woofer, wired and wireless (not Bose wireless compatible), but I could temporarily hook it to the Bose 300 to do a more fair sound comparison. I'm glad I did as it added a nice low kick. The Bose 300 has some bass, and if placed on a solid surface it's pretty good, but it's still thin on the low end. Adding my existing sub did the trick, I really liked using my other sub wirelessly, so I certainly will add the Bose 500 base module in the near future. The Bose 300 Soundbar is pretty nice alone, but for a big room it needs so more bass.
I then configured Google Voice and some Sound Services (Google Play, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, SiriusXM and TuneIn (Included from Bose for Local Radio - nice bonus). It also supports AirPlay (but not Chromecast). I went and listened to several sources all pretty good for streaming. Then went to AirPlay from my phone, it sounded MUCH better, was easy to prove how some of the Streaming services compress the music too much. I've prefered wi-fi streaming to Bluetooth forever. I hope Bose considers adding Chromecast support to this soundbar in the future, especially with Chrome cast multiroom support.
I streamed some movies with better dynamic range, then went to some 4K video's with full surround. The Bose 300 soundbar really improves as you improve the quality of the audio, playing full surround, sound tracks, you can tell the bar is doing something to best mix to sound based on what you have configured, I'm sure adding some surround speakers would make a big difference. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the sub, and without the sub connected the soundbar 300 tried to output lower bass than it was really capable of producing; muddling the low-end/mid-range, hooking the sub back up apparently changes the low frequency cross over point, which really improved the over all sound, especially with great sounding movies. But the voices still came through with a nice center soundstage.
Color me impressed, but it really needs a sub to perform up to snuff, but Bose planed for this as this soundbar is upgradable, it can be configured to adapt to other Bose home speakers, headphones, earbuds, bass modules and surround speakers.
I did run into one point of confusion, for the soundbar to support auto firmware upgrades it says it needs to be v5 or greater, but the firmware of my soundbar was v2.0.14 I tried the automatic upgrade (it did nothing) and manual upgrade by IP and it would not respond. I'm hoping an app upgrade straightens this out. But even like it is, all is good.
One other thing me wife always bothers me about, how to turn on/off voice recognition... On the top left there is a mic logo, touching turns it on/off and when off a red led is illuminated on the front. Everything else is controlled from the remote, volume up/down illuminates a white led that "moves right/left" in the front of the bar

Bose now has two families of speakers: Soundtouch and Smart Home. The Bose Smart Soundbar 300 is part of the new family, Smart Home. Both families of speakers have their own apps which can control, manage, and even connect multiple speakers within the same family. I used this soundbar to replace the factory TV speakers in my Samsung TV.
The setup was easy since I already had the Bose Music app installed. You can choose between Alexa or Google assistant. I decided on using the optical cable to connect the soundbar to the TV hub since this cable was included in the box. I like how there are some audio controls such as Center Channel, Bass, and Treble. You can also sync this soundbar with your TV or with other Bose speakers grouped within the same family. I was a little disappointed to find that you cannot sync all speakers to your TV at the same time. You either have a delay within the linked speakers or all speakers sound will be delayed with the actual TV dialogue. I hope Bose will come out with an update to allow a surround sound experience with various Bose speakers without the delay.
I would recommend this soundbar as a replacement for the stock TV sound. I would, however, recommend adding a Bass module for a more full sound.

Summary: I just want to say first that the combination that I ended up keeping was the Bose Soundbar 300 with the Bass Module 700.
How did I get there? Story below.
I had a Sony HTCT380 (2.1 soundbar + subwoofer) previously for about 4 years and decided that I need a surround system in my living room that somewhat mimicked my basement home theater (160" screen, Epson Projector, Marantz Receiver, PSB speakers, SVS subwoofer combination). A junior 5.1 if you will for my 65" Sony TV.
An important consideration was minimal speakers, no wires running across; and the ability to move the speaker system and TV when the furniture layout was changed. The room is fairly large with an open plan.
Bought the Bose Soundbar 300 along with the Base Module 500. It sounded great with music but sounded shallow and boomy with movies. No amount of adjustments got it to hit the deep grunt/lower bass notes. I was very disappointed.
My cheaper Sony soundbar+subwoofer system had better movie bass.
So I swapped the Bass Module 500 for the Base Module 700. Boy, what a difference that made! Movies now sounded natural and properly reinforced with a low-end grunt. No more shallow boominess.
I also bought the Soundbar 700 to see if it was better than the 300.
To my surprise, the 700 soundbar sounded quite similar to the 300, and I was a tad disappointed (that the 700 was not significantly better).
To its credit, the 700 soundbar had a wider soundstage, thanks to the compression drivers (aka Edgemax/ Phaseguide technology) creating wider left and right channels.
Surround sounds were also a tad better on the 700, though if you have listened to a proper 5.1 surround system, neither can match that. I'd highly recommend adding the Bose 300 or 700 surround speakers to provide immersive effects.
The 700 also had AdaptIQ, which helped me tune the sound to my room. However, I was also able to achieve the same tuning for my room by turning off AdaptIQ and using +0 Center, +50 Bass, and +50 Treble on the 700 Soundbar and +0 on the 700 Subwoofer (your mileage may vary). So I ended up using the same settings on the 300 soundbar.
After auditioning both soundbars extensively, I was delighted that the 300 soundbar sounded just as good in my room as the 700, at half the price. Required adjusting the settings on the 300 though (no AdaptIQ).
The 300 soundbar was also well "crossover" matched with the Bass Module 700, providing a perfectly seamless integration of upper, mid, and lower frequencies, just like the 700. At any setting.
So in the end, the 700 soundbar did not seem like a significant upgrade than the 300 to me; especially at twice the price.
I ended up loving and keeping the Bose Soundbar 300 and the Bose Bass Module 700. I will also be adding the Bose Surround 300 speakers when they are back in stock.
Hope this helps.
