This soundbar has great sound. The Dolby Atmos sounds good but not great. It’s hard to find an Atmos source on most streaming services. Apple TV and Fudu has the most from what I’ve discovered. I’m happy with the sound.

This review contains my early impressions of the Bose Smart Soundbar 900. At the time of this review several features were not enabled but should be enabled with a future software update around September 23, 2021. These features are the “center” and “height” channel adjustments within the Bose Music app, ADAPTiQ calibration, and compatibility with Bose Surround Speakers and Surround Speaker 700 (the Bose Bass Module 500 and 700 are currently compatible).
This is my first Dolby Atmos soundbar and I was curious if having top firing drivers and Dolby Atmos would be able to produce a noticeable difference compared to my previous non-Dolby Atmos Bose Soundbar 500.
Compared to my previous Bose Soundbar 500, it’s a bit bigger (about 41.1 inches wide, 4.2 inches deep and 2.3 inches tall) so it didn’t fit between the legs of my TCL 49S515 4K TV but it was still thin enough not to block the bottom of the screen. I had to move the TCL a little further back to make space for the new soundbar.
Inputs include one HDMI (eARC), one digital optical, an Ethernet port, a service port (looks like a micro USB port), a power cord receptacle, a data port, an IR port, a bass port and a port for the ADAPTiQ headset.
It came with the same remote as the Bose Soundbar 500 along with batteries, an ADAPTiQ calibration headset, an optical cable, an HDMI cable, power cord, and quick start guide.
One nice improvement is that it doesn’t use a power brick like my previous Bose soundbar for less clutter on the floor.
Setup was super easy and exactly the same as with my previous Bose soundbar. I connected the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 to my TV’s HDMI ARC port and plugged in the power cord. I then used the Bose Music app on my tablet and followed the instructions to add a new soundbar.
Compared to my Soundbar 500, the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 seemed to produce richer sound with slightly better highs. Instruments and vocals sounded crisp and clear with decent bass. I thought the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 provided a better movie watching experience compared to the Soundbar 500.
The bass, while not great compared to a soundbar combined with a subwoofer, was decent enough to allow one to be able wait awhile before adding a subwoofer as your budget allows.
Podcasts sounded great with easily understood vocals. Streaming Kim Wilde, Liz Phair, Dua Lipa, Squeeze etc. from Amazon Music sounded great along with music from other genres. The sound stage also seemed wider and more immersive.
As with my experience with other Bose soundbars, the first thing I noticed was the extreme clarity of vocals. I can easily hear and understand dialog from TV shows and movies. Even when set to low volume so as to not disturb my neighbors, dialog and vocals are easily understood.
And if you want to raise the volume, the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 is capable of easily filling the room with enough sound to probably disturb your neighbors.
The Bose Smart Soundbar 900 also makes a great Alexa smart speaker. It picks up and recognizes my voice commands the best among all my other smart speakers (the Bose Soundbar 500 is the equal in this respect).
It was super easy to set up Voice4Video to use Alexa to control your TV and cable box but I encountered some problems with actually using it.
I was able to use Alexa to control the volume but I had problems changing channels. It seemed like Alexa was trying to input the wrong channels to the cable box or if the cable box couldn’t keep up with the channel numbers being sent by Alexa. I just changed my cable box from a TiVo to an Xfinity X1 XG2 box at the time of this review so this could be user error on my part as I’m still getting familiar with my new Xfinity TV box.
I had some difficulty in testing Dolby Atmos material on this soundbar. My TV only has a HDMI ARC connector instead of eARC. It turns out you can still play Dolby Atmos using HDMI ARC but it is kind of hard to determine if you are really getting Dolby Atmos.
From researching the web, Dolby Atmos is just metadata and actually uses either Dolby Digital Plus (compressed/lossy) or Dolby TrueHD (lossless) codecs for playback. If you only have HDMI ARC then it will use Dolby Digital for playback and if you have HDMI eARC then it will use Dolby TrueHD for playback.
Streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Vudu, Netflix, HBO Max etc. can stream videos using Dolby Atmos. I used Vudu to stream Justice Society: World War II from my nVida Shield as Vudu claimed this movie supported Dolby Atmos playback. But I’m still not sure if I was actually using Dolby Atmos as the Bose Music App reported that the TV was using Dolby Digital 2.0.
Then I used HBO Max to stream Titans which is also supposed to be in Dolby Atmos but the Bose Music app reported that the TV was using Dolby Digital 5.1.
I finally used my Sony UBP-X700 to play Blade Runner 2049. My TCL 4K TV reported that the Sony UBP-X700 was using Dolby Atmos but the Bose Music app reported the TV was using Dolby Digital 5.1.
The Sony UBP-X700 has an additional audio-only HDMI port which I assumed supported Dolby TrueHD. I figured this would provide the best possible sound output. I tried to use that as the input to the soundbar to bypass the HDMI ARC port limitation from my TV but I couldn’t get any sound to come out.
Assuming that I was actually using Dolby Atmos, sound from Dolby Atmos material sounded rich and immersive on the Bose Smart Soundbar 900. While the sound was immersive (filling the room with sound), it lacked the precise positioning of a sound system using physical surround speakers.
For example, most of the sounds seemed to be coming in front of me. The rain scenes in Blade Runner 2049 felt like it was coming from a wide area but mostly from the front. The soundstage was wide, but I never really experienced feeling that there was sound coming from above or behind me. Sometimes when a flying car zoomed by, I did get a subtle sense of sound coming from my side.
I think the up-firing drivers of the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 does provide a wider soundstage but I don’t think it can actually make me think that there is sound coming from above me. The same can be said for the side firing drivers. It just isn’t reasonable to expect that it would be able to reproduce the same effect of having actual physical surround speakers.
Once the software upgrade comes out I am fully expecting that the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 will be spectacular for watching movies when combined with a subwoofer (either the Bose Bass Module 500 or 700) and physical surround speakers (such as the Bose Surround Speakers or Surround Speaker 700).
I’m looking forward to trying out more Dolby Atmos material once I can connect the Soundbar 900 with my Bose Surround Speakers. I think it would be cool if Bose would add the ability to attach additional surround speakers for the height channels as well as for the rear channels.
By itself, I think the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 provides a good enough movie theatre experience to allow one to be able to enjoy it now while incrementally upgrading their system as their budget allows.

Amazing sound bar. The depth and effect of the sound bar is great and I compared it with other top ones, this one sounded the best for me
