Very Disappointing - NOT like the Store Demo

I listened to the store demo at my local Best Buy for about a year before I pulled the trigger on this for Christmas 2018. I liked what I heard in the store and I was prepared to have less bass and a more balanced sound with lots of clarity. I did everything right including of course the optical cable hook up. It just sounded HORRIBLE.... worse than my internal TV speakers. Flat.. zero depth...zero stereo separation.... nothing like what I heard at the store. It sounded like two little cheap crappy speakers in an oversized sound bar. I am 60 years old and a musician since the age of 5 so I know a little bit about his stuff. For you Techies who want to find the weak link in my chain of gear that would explain this horrible phenomenon, I have a 100Mbs cable Internet connection with a pretty expensive 2 channel Linksis Wifi Router so the TV is alone on the 5Ghz channel. Amazon Fire TV Box into fairly new Sony Bravia. Optical out to Bose Solo 5. My old Altec Lansing 2.1 system from the 90's plugged into the digital audio out on the Sony Bravia sounds light years beyond the Bose Solo 5 in the Optical Output. I don't get it.... except... when I went back to Best Buy to check THEIR connections, the Bose Solo 5 was not hooked up to the optical output on the TV. Instead, the Optical Input on the Bose went into some location hidden within the display. It did NOT go to the optical out on the TV - so that tells you something. I so wanted this thing to do what it does while both my kids and their spouses/girlfriends came home for the Holidays... but it was universally agreed upon that it is just a horrible piece of electronic equipment.

    Irritating Remote

    Posted

The soundbar was easy to set up. The sound is clear and rich and I like it very much. I understand why the best buy rating currently stands at 4.5. So why have I given a one star rating? The universal remote control! So what's wrong with it? Not much. In fact, I quite like it: it's one of the best universal remotes that I have ever had. So what's my beef? The "back button" doesn't work with Samsung Smart TVs. Is this a big deal? In one respect no - there are work arounds and I still use the Universal Remote. But occasionally, you manage to get into some hole in Netflix or YouTube which you just can't get out of without the back button. So there's no choice but to get of your big fat you-know-what to switch everything off and on again. Is this a first-world problem? You betcha. But here's the thing: I live in the first world and I expect such daft design oversights to be addressed. Myself and a merry band of fellow travellers have been complaining about this to Bose on their customer support website for over a year now, and nothing has been done about it. I'm not even convinced that Bose has yet accepted that there is problem to be fixed. What little feedback we have got has been PR wishy-washy to say the least.

    An Unmitigated DISASTER

The advertised "easy set up" (confirmed by some customers) is true only in SOME cases. Depends on your TV. I bought the Bose Solo 5 and attempted to connect it to my (relatively new) Sony Bravia Digital TV (a very popular model TV) and couldn't. Spent (believe it or not) over four hours trying to troubleshoot the problem with 3 different Bose customer service representatives in Manila before finally giving up and returning the product. Could not get the Solo 5 to sync with my TV...no sound produced. Tried everything, even running back to the store for a new optical cable because one of the product specialists believed it to be a defective cable...which was incorrect. Probably the most frustrating experience of trying to hook up an electronic product in my life. One of their "specialists" suggested I send the product to a service center for repair (though I had purchased it only 4 hours earlier!) All-in-all a terrible experience.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the Solo 5 experience. We are disheartened that you were not able to complete your setup after speaking with several technical support representatives. This is not typical for our support team and we sincerely apologize.

This system is designed to be easy to set up, as you've noted, and it is very important to us to get you enjoying this system as soon as possible. Please email us at product_support@bose.com and include as much as detail as possible and we'll figure this out with you: name, address, make/model of your TV and any other components used in the setup (cable box, DVD, etc.). We look forward to working with you. Bose

I bought this for my mother in to increase the sound range of a Samsung 40-inch LCD that is probably... 10 years old? Not even? In my experience almost every Samsung has terrible sound when it comes to a TV but hooking this up literally made no difference. Bose used to have a good name, I have a very expensive 2016 Infiniti QX-70S that also has Bose speakers...guess I should have known as I'm not that impressed with them (or Infiniti anymore for that matter - double review!) either. Endpoint - especially for the ridiculous price do not buy! I have the Vizio SB3821-C6 38-Inch 2.1 Channel Sound Bar with Wireless Subwoofer connected to a much newer Samsung 55in and literally bug out that someone is in my house because the sound is so "large", realistic, and incredible.

      Hello, BBoy.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on your Solo 5 TV Soundbar. We're sorry to hear that the soundbar's audio quality didn't meet your expectations.

To ensure the best sound, we would recommend checking that the internal speakers are disabled on your mother's TV. This will avoid any possible "echo" that would occur when both sets of speakers are outputting audio. If you were interested in more bass response, the bass setting can be increased with the steps at this link: https://bose.life/2tuQgRX. We hope this helps. Have a great day!

I bought this product last Dec and it just suddenly stopped working 3 days after the 1yr warranty! I assumed since it was a Bose product, it was more than likely the power supply, but according to my volt meter that's still supplying 20volts power so the sound bar itself appears to be dead. Hugely disappointing for a Bose product, my first and probably last! It has some quirks that are rather irritating as well. It doesn't stay on the settings you leave it when you turn it on again. You have to re-set bass, voice enhance...really annoying...plus it didn't come with a wall bracket to mount it.

I bought this as a gift for my mother. She was so excited when she saw the “Bose” name. Her bedroom TV has weak sound and even on MAX, she cannot hear the dialog sometimes. When I used the Bluetooth connection to play music from my phone, the sound was pretty good. Once I connected it to the TV with the included optical cable, the sound was terrible. It was no better than the TV speaker output, completely defeating the purpose of buying it. I couldn’t believe the volume didn’t go higher. My mom was so excited when she opened her gift, it really upset me that the gift was ultimately useless. She told me if the volume didn’t go higher, get my money back. That’s what I did. Disappointed!

I specifically bought this because of the comments on how it made speech clearer. Was looking forward to using the dialogue button to help me understand what people were saying. In all fairness to the product I will state that I wear hearing aids in both ears. Sometimes speech, usually from a movie or TV drama is so mumbled that I cannot understand what is being said. Installation was a snap but after it was installed I noticed absolutely no difference between the sound from the TV speakers or from the sound bar..Dialogue button on or off made no difference either A total waste of money at least for my ears. I returned the product.

This was a HUGE disappointment. We bought it to replace an analog home theatre system in a small living room. We knew that it was just two channels but incorrectly assumed that the Bose name still meant high quality. And we thought it could do the job. We were completely wrong. No nuance, no way to adjust anything. The tv speakers sounded better than the sound bar, which did nothing more than make the sound LOUDER, and “tinny.” Nothing but volume and treble.

Hello, and thanks for reviewing our Solo 5 Soundbar!
We're sorry to hear about this, and would be happy to try and help!
If you are having poor sound quality from the connected source, we would recommend a few things.
Firstly, if there are already audio adjustments for Headphones or External Speakers on your TV, please check these to make sure this isn't trying to upscale very quiet audio!
Additionally, we would advise that you try and adjust the bass and/or make use of dialogue mode on the speaker to adjust the overall tone of the system.
Lastly, we would advise checking the cable connections, ensuring that these are seated correctly, and trying a replacement cable.
If you have tried all of this and are still having audio balance issues, please get in touch with Bose Support in you region so we can help with this! bose

I enjoyed and loved this soundbar since I bought it. Unfortunately though, right at the mark of using it for a year it suddenly stopped working. I reached out to Bose and because it was right out of their 1 year warranty they will not honor any repairs. When you pay a premium for a premium quality company you don't expect it to stop working after a year - so my recommendation: Save the money, buy something cheaper..

Original price was $299 and when I bought it, it was reduce to $199. I was so disappointed at how this product only sells for its brand not the quality! I immediately returned this product and got myself a Vizio Soundbar with subwoofer and two rear speakers for just 40$ more which was about $250 and it sounds wayyyyyy better then the Bose. Don’t buy this product

I bought this unit for my wife for Christmas, but upon hooking it to our 4K television we were sadly unimpressed with the sound quality. Basically it sounded like our television speakers. I double checked the connections, Optical, pretty straightforward connections, but could not produce a sound worthy of keeping. We may have had a bad unit out of the box, but we decided to go with a different manufacturer that was similar priced.

Purchased less than a year ago. Sounded great when it worked. Then it occasionally would not turn on with the TV which required taking it off the wall, unplugging it, then plugging it back in to get it to work again. Very annoying! Over time it quit working more and more frequently. Today it quit working altogether. Very frustrated that I paid $250.00 for this thing and it completely failed in less than a year!

I bought the Bose soundbar because I bought a new TV and wanted to have that "loved" Bose sound(I have a Bose Acousticwave doublestack and Bose companions 2) and love them, I was expecting the same with the soundbar, let me just say that the speakers on the TV was louder and cleaner than the Bose, my opinion, stay away from this soundbar.

Huge universal remote that is not universal. I have a new Samsung TV and Time Warner cable box. It took forever to get them programmed and still not working right. The remote will not turn the TV and cable box on and off, no matter how many times I follow the directions. So now I am stuck with two large remotes. I guess universal doesn't really mean universal. Very disappointed.

I purchased this sound bar strictly for music via Bluetooth. The sound is muffled and it is not loud at all. It sounds more like a boom box, I paid $250 for it and immediately returned it in exchange for a $200 Sony sound bar 2.0 with a sub woofer included, the Sony sound bar was well worth my money.

Well my bose solo 5 TV soundbar hasn't worked since I bought it home and configured my system??? The green indicator light was on about 2 days with no sound then it just died. It could be that I made a mistake configuring the system? I have been over how to run the cables to and from each piece of equipment but I have a feeling this isn't good at all.

Disappointed. Performance matches low cost. Sound level at high is low and the base is so so. Had to return the speaker because it wouldn’t turn on/off properly causing it to get out of sink with the tv on/off cycle. It boils down to you get what you pay for. Pay the higher price for a better sound bar. You will be much happier.

The "brochure" is nothing more than a few dozens words instructing how to install the phone. My wife took the Zeiss VR 1 back to Best Buy and talked to the Geek Squad to figure out how it worked. Basically, there was not much to look see at all on the device. She doesn't want it and it was the only thing she asked for, for Christmas. Big disappointment.
