Great Product, Universal Remote is Advanced Setup

Full disclosure, I did a ton of research leading into this: - Sounds quality issues are either defective unit or setup based. Once set up, the sound quality is honestly impeccable for a pure sound bar. - Installation, from out of the box to connecting wires, took me 4.5 minutes - and I timed it to make a point to my wife (love you honey :). - The Universal Remote: It really requires a capital 'The' because while it is by FAR the most advanced component Universal Remote I have ever seen, it takes advanced setup. I have 2 engineering degrees and it took me 4 hours to understand how to program and then actually do it. PROGRAMMING THE UNIVERSAL REMOTE (If you have any questions, here is how I did it) - To understand why each brand has only one Code, it is because under each brand (Samsung, Vizio, etc.) there may be multiple SUB-codes, any one of which may work for your device, so it will be time consuming. For example, for Samsung, I discovered through trial and error, there are approximately 30 sub-codes. To find the right one for your component, you enter the code per the instructions, then press volume + ONCE and wait till it is set, then you test per the instructions. If responsive, great! If not try again up to the volume +, then you press volume + TWICE, then test, if not - then follow the process over this time volume + THREE (FOUR, FIVE, SIX) so on and so forth until it responds. I am sure the brilliant team at BOSE would have told me this had I been able to get someone on the phone on a Saturday afternoon, and possibly they have a better method, but this is how I did it and I was able to add 4 components all of different levels of age and complexity. The directions could use some fine-tuning. That is my only knock and why I go down to 4 starts. Let's call it punitive incentivization in that, had I left for my 75 year old father to set up, he would not be talking to me till the holidays, but the 4 hours kept me from having to go to BedBathBeyond with my wife - so I could make it 4.5 stars - but baby steps. Once up and running though, I couldn't imagine going back to the receiver component systems I was running. Love the BOSE SOLO 5 so far!

Just what I was looking for

I bought this sound bar for the sole purpose of being able to HEAR the dialogue in a movie. Most movies I found, when the music or sound effects were going on, I was BLASTED out of the room, and had to turn the sound down, and when they just spoke, I had to turn it back up. I was at the point of just turning on the CC so I could read what was being said and decided to try this BOSE sound bar first. Let me just say this, if you're looking for complete surround sound, you need to buy a system made for that (usually 5-7 speakers). This BOSE sound bar worked with great efficiency at a good price, was easy to set up and does what I needed it to do!! I can hear every word being spoken and not waking up the neighbors when music scores play...for example, " A Star Is Born" or "Crazy Heart" have lots of music scenes, this bar compressed it well!! The bass boost on the system also works well, but I can say a lot of these negative reviews on sound bars have a lot to do with the source and how you set up your digital output on the TV. I noticed on my old sound bar (9 year old Vizio) worked well with pluto tv and Netflix, but was horrible with Fandango Now and Hulu. This bar worked well with all of them, but even better when I changed the source for each. Now, I'm not going to change the audio set up on my TV for each platform just to get "The Best Sound" (who has time for that??) so until each different platform runs on the same audio source this will continue to be a problem with ALL sound bars, But the BOSE solo 5 was able to work well with all of them, better on some than others, but with all I CAN HEAR THE VOICES, and that's why I bought this!!

Wow... Need to premise this by saying I am not a fan of BOSE products however it just so happens that I needed a cost efficient sound bar for my room as the speakers from my TV was not cutting it. PROS: Universal remote, has all the features you need to control your TV and more. I've seen that this is too advanced for some people, however if you need something more simple then I am unsure how you are going to get this hooked up to your TV. The Optic connection, the fact that it is an option is great. The Price, for the features it provides such as the voice clarity and the mimicking of a sub woofer in :BASS: mode this little sound bar is great and will do the job for a small living room or bed room. It packs a decent punch for the price and the features you are receiving. CONS: The speaker does not come with a mount. Yes, the price is great however I feel that for better customer service and incentives, BOSE should be including this even if it means raising the price a couple bucks on the sound bar. Yes, many people might not be using it to mount to their wall but it's the idea that the manufacturer cares about the customer experience. Subwoofer. Why does it not have a tiny sub-woofer? Sony currently is selling one with a built in subwoofer that has a larger range in volume however does not come with the aformentioned things that BOSE features. All in all I feel that the inclusion of a built in subwoofer and a mounting bracket with the item would have made this product a perfect 100/100. Having said that I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a entry level sound bar looking for quality sound on a soft price.

    Excellent small speaker. Disappointing remote.

    IMHO

This soundbar shows that bigger isn't always *that* much better. Picked up the soundbar to replace a much larger soundbar+subwoofer setup I had before which was totally overkill for our small living room. Really very pleased with the quality of the sound. The dialogue is very clear - and the dialogue function works well by boosting the treble and dialing back the bass to make words more clear. The sound is surprisingly full, crisp and clear. The bass is clean and tight, but not overpowering. The speaker also allows for very precise and fine tuning of volume - so you can adjust to get the volume just right. Sounds great playing music as well and TV and movies. Here are the things to keep in mind: * The bass is clear and clean - but keep your expectations in check. But this soundbar isn't going to shake the windows. If you want bass that rattles your chest, this isn't for you. The bass, again is adequate. But if you want your house to shake, you'll probably want a separate sub. * The remote is disappointing. The remote is big, heavy and clunky and kinda poorly designed. It stands out like a sore thumb - especially compared with the sleek speaker. The remote seems like an afterthought. I would have preferred a small thin device to just control the speaker itself - instead of this clumsy, universal remote. * No on-speaker controls. My older soundbar had volume controls on the speaker itself. That was handy. Not the case with this one - you need the remote for most functions (although it does have auto turn on and auto turn off). There is also no visual indicator of the volume level. Overall - a fantastic speaker. It is so much smaller than what I had before and the sound is great - especially for the size. The control is OK - but ugly and clunky. It would also be cool if the speaker allowed to you add a subwoofer in the future if you wanted to.

    Better Sound for TV

The Bose Solo 5 TV Soundbar produces very good sound. Easier to understand and considerably deeper or more nuanced than sound from the Samsung flat screen TV's own speakers. It is a definite improvement - not a $1000 improvement, but a considerable step up. The sound is also more than adequate when playing music from my smart phone via Bluetooth. Could have more bass, but the room is small and our interest in deep, loud thumping is small as well. Reviews by others that pointed to sound clarity and not too much bass were accurate. Reviews that spoke to ease of set-up were also accurate -- except about programming the Bose universal remote to handle our other equipment. This was more or less a failure, despite several attempts that scrupulously followed the instructions both in the manual and in others' reviews, which very helpful (why can't Bose do this straight up?) . So the downer is that I now have yet another remote, my LARGEST by far - this one to handle sound only, while I use the satellite system remote to operate the satellite box and some TV functions, the TV remote to access online programming, and a Blu-Ray remote to operate that unit. Pain in the neck. It would be much better if Bose (or someone) could make an add-on that could be paired into an original equipment manufacturer's system. Or, failing that, made a much smaller remote, if it's going to be (for many users) one of several.

I narrowed my choice down to this and the Sonos Beam. In retrospect, the Beam may have been the better choice. My decision came down to the connectors. The Bose Solo 5 uses an optical audio connector, while the Sonos Beam uses HDMI. All 4 of my HDMI ports are in use, so I went with the Bose. The Bose is actually working out well for my purposes. I have kids, so I rarely turn up the volume really loud. The Solo 5 gives me a modest upgrade over my TV speakers (which aren't bad speakers). The sound is clear and reasonably full. There is a dialog mode, meant to make dialog easier to hear. I have tried it and don't notice a ton of difference. One thing I like is that the sound is well balanced. Some speakers tend to make the music and explosions really loud, while the dialog can get lost. The Solo 5 lets you hear everything without turning up the volume to hear dialog, then back down when the explosions get too loud. It is a good sound bar to make TV, movies and video games sound better. I turned it up pretty loud to hear how it sounds and it didn't lose fidelity or break up at high volume.

I probably didn't need this unit since every top of the line TV will come with some pretty decent speakers built in...but here we are with this review. High quality sound, and I really like the volume settings - the difference between each level is very small, which allows you to precisely choose the exact level of volume you'd like. Nice design too, and looks great sitting in front of my TV. Downside is that the co-axial line that connects the sound bar to your TV isn't very stable - if you like to put your soundbar in front of your TV, it will get loose over time as you adjust things, and you may have to re-insert the co-axial from time to time. It's bluetooth capable, so I might try just hooking it up to my TV that way...but a more secure co-axial connection would have been nice. Additionally, the remote is rather large for a soundbar - it's like 6 times the size of my smart TV remote. I don't want to control my TV with my soundbar remote, especially when the TV has it's own smart remote. But that's just me nitpicking for flaws. To be honest, the price I paid for this unit makes it not worthwhile to the thrifty shopper who already plans on getting a top-of-the-line TV. But if you're something of a perfectionist like me, its worth it. And it'll last you a long time.

I was tired of having to use closed captions to watch certain shows. Rewinding because you didn't hear something clearly. This unit takes care of the problem. It has a button that will specifically enhance speech even though in its default mode it works perfectly. For those who like additional bass there is a mode that allows you to increase the bass. I was really impressed with the remote. It can pretty much do everything my Xfinity remote can do except for the buttons that light up. Now if your looking for surround sound effect or big sound this is not for you. Yes it does have an overall better sound, but not at a level found with other center speaker units. It's easy to set up. I connected to my tv with the optical cable. You can also connect via Bluetooth or RCA cable there is also an aux port. No HDMI.? I've read a couple of reviews that weren't favorable to the fact that if your in the dialogue mode and shut the unit off it will turn back on in the default mode. It's really no biggie. Certainly not a deal breaker. So if your like me and have some hearing loss and don't hear speech as clearly as you once did, look no further.

This is a good little speaker. It works well, has solid bluetooth input from your phone and other devices. While it has a good amount of bass for a sound bar (and a small bar at that), it's not a subwoofer and feels just a bit flat compared to one. It's a nice small footprint, but wish it offered at least the option for a wired or wireless sub. Looks great. I got this over the $500 Bose because of the limitation in cord length because I was mounting this (plus price is hard to beat...way better sound than any other system I heard for under 500). Bose's $1000 systems are incredibly better, but again, they are stuck in the cord era and that just doesn't work with wall mounting tvs these days.

I live in a condo so I am limited to bass free speakers without annoying my neighbors with loud movie explosions. Anyway, the speaker is small enough that sometimes I forget its behind the tv stand. It has good mids and highs which are perfect for my set up. There is some bass that pushes some bump in action movies. Set up was simple and the remote is a full functioning universal remote compared to other sound bar mini remotes. For now, I am using my tv remote with the auto on/off function on the sound bar. The bluetooth is simple to set up and use it quite often when not watching tv. Overall, I am happy with the sound bar, but I gave it 4 stars because I think its over priced. Its normally $250 ( got it for $224), but I think its worth maybe $200.

We've had this for 1 1/2 years already, using it with a TV in the bedroom. Works great, and we love it, but the one thing that's an issue is that the remote won't work the Panasonic TV we're using. I can't get any of the codes for it to operate the TV. Not a big issue, as it works well to control the soundbar with our Dish remote, but I was trying it the other way around as we get ready to cut the cord and drop Dish. Sounds great otherwise, and we really like the 'Conversation mode' which makes the dialogue somewhat easier to understand. I've also used the Bluetooth connection to listen to music or podcasts on my phone, and that works great as well.

I love Bose speakers. I have many of their products. The sound bar doesn’t disappoint as far as sound goes. Where I have issue with it is that it refuses to pair with my new Sony TVs remote. With the soundbar you get a Bose remote that wants you to use it as a universal remote to control everything else. This seems stupid to me. Just allow the Tv remote to control the volume of the Bose bar. Bose didn’t make it easy to do and I still haven’t figured it out. I should say that My Apple TV box had no trouble learning how to control the Bose bar but my new Sony TV just won’t do it and therefore I am stuck using the Bose remote. The Bose remote isn’t bad, but the Sony TV remote is better.

I enjoyed obtaining the recent BestBuy Black Friday deal on the Sharp 50 inch Smart TV. However, the sound on this TV wasn't the greatest. Therefore I was looking to augment the TV sound with a separate soundbar, but I didn't want a $50 saddle on at $10 horse. The quality sound, form factor, name recognition, and price drove me to look at the Bose Solo 5 along with a Yamaha sound bar available at Costco. I purchased both, used the Bose on my TV, and gifted the Yamaha to my son (he's very happy with that as well). I like the programmable remote included, and am using it to control my entire setup. While I do think that Bose should accommodate HDMI connectivity (Yamaha does), overall I'm very happy with the decision.

I dont mind that the overall volume is not super loud, I have this set in a small room. my only thing is that i dont know the level of volume i have it on, sometimes my wife complains it is too loud and i think is just perfect. Guess it is all subjective. the speaker is very easy to set up, two cables, one for electrical power, one for connecting to the tv, it is an optical audio, so be sure to check you tv supports it. the other thing i dont kinda like is the fact that now i have 3 remotes for the tv. AS a universal remote, it kinda works sometimes, however not all DirectTv function are supported, or at least havent found the way to check the recorded shows.

I kept the box in the garage in case I wanted to return it. I will be keeping it. It is a big improvement over the TV speakers. I really like the voice isolation. I used to watch shows with the closed caption on. It has just enough bass and you can hear the dialogue. That said, I have two complaints. 1) it is just as loud as I would have expected. It is loud enough--barely. I have it on max volume all the time. That is just enough, but just enough. I wish it was this loud at about half volume. 2) I wish there were some visible indication of how loud it is. When you turn the volume up on your TV, it shows you that you are at volume level xx. With the Bose solo, you don't know if you are at 5 or 8 or maxed out.

I live in an apartment so I didn't need a separate subwoofer. This sound bar is perfect for my space. Excellent bass for movies without worrying about the neighbors feeling it in the walls. There is also a dialogue only mode for when you're watching the news and things of that nature. The remote is universal so you can program it to turn everything on and off at the same time. Unfortunately it gets out of sync sometimes. I don't like that it doesn't have a volume indicator. 1-10 type thing. Just a little light that flashes. It's a little pricey but bose usually is. It definitely has the bose sound.

This is my first purchase of a Bose product. I have been impressed with the quality of this product. It was easy and simple to setup and did not take very long to get it hooked up. It has definitely improved the quality of sound with my TV. The sound bar has a light that lets you see when you are increasing the volume or when you have muted the sound. One small negative is the remote doesn't give a visual, such as a bar or number, when increasing or decreasing volume. The Bose remote will control functions on the TV and as a result I use the Bose remote about 95% of the time I am watching TV. I really like the size of the sound bar as it is relatively compact and doesn't take up as much space as many other sound bars I considered.

Other reviewers have commented on audio quality, which is less than expected for a product with the Bose name, but is still great for the price point. This is clearly the Bose consumer entry level line. What's best for me is the size, as it fits perfectly in my entertainment center's middle console. Worst attributes for me are that it doesn't cooperate with my PS4 remote for universal control and the Bose remote is 1) huge, 2) required to power up the device, and 3) also doesn't cooperate with PS4.

This is a solid addition to a small room TV set up. I bought this to go along with my wall mounted 55 inch LED in my office. This speaker puts out plenty of sound for my office. Great Bluetooth feature. Cons: Remote feels cumbersome Little bass response Pros Sleek Decent mids and highs Easily mounted with wall mount (purchase necessary) Simple to hook up to tv (one chord) Can't give it 4 stars because of the lack of bass. But I am buying another for my master bedroom at home. So clearly I like the product.

I was looking for a simple way to provide better sound for my flat screen TV. I cannot understand a lot of dialog on the built-in speakers on the TV. I have an receiver/amplifier with center, side, and base speakers but I have to turn on all gadgets and use different remotes for the amplifier. This is where the Bose Solo 5 is better. It connects directly to the TV and volume is controlled by the TV remote. Another thing I like is the "dialog" setting which enhances the voice so I can hear better. I would give it 5 stars but sound is not as good as a big Hi-Fi. It is probably better than cheaper sound bars and cheaper soundbars do not have the "dialog" setting.
