Ease of Setup: The speaker came partially charged and ready to go with the default language set to English. The speaker will talk to you in a rather robotic female voice (a feature that can be disabled). Documentation: To say that the documentation that comes with the system is “minimal” is a gross overstatement. To get any useful information about this speaker, you will need to download the user’s manual from the Bose website (https://assets.bose.com/content/dam/Bose_DAM/Web/consumer_electronics/global/products/speakers/soundlink_color_ii/pdf/soundlink_color_ii_PDF_ownersguide_ML.pdf). Charging: The unit is charged via USB only. It comes with a USB cable (standard A to micro B [male:male]), but no “wall wart” for charging with an AC wall outlet. The USB port is rated for 1 amp input, but does not appear to have a problem with my USB power sources at 2.5 amps. The unit charges quickly (@2.5A) and holds a charge for a reasonable period (I have not used it long enough at a stretch to exhaust the battery). Connectivity: The speaker is designed to accept input over a Bluetooth connection and via an auxiliary 3.5mm stereo cable. The implemented version of the Bluetooth protocol is not documented in the user’s guide or online documentation. Bluetooth pairing is accomplished by simply pressing the Bluetooth button on the speaker and selecting “Bose Color II Soundlink” from the source device. Two (or, presumably, more) Bluetooth devices can be paired simultaneously. Only one source will play at a time, but pausing one source will automatically give control to the other. Your speaker could be high jacked by a friend with a long play list. I can find no information on the version of Bluetooth that is implemented in the Bose Soundlink II. The auxiliary source (input jack located by the USB port) is selected using the button with the circle/arrow icon. There is no description of the auxiliary source input or button in the package documentation. You will need to download the user’s manual (see above). The speaker can also be paired using the NFC sensor at the center-top of the device. You will need to download the user’s manual (see above) do get any information on pairing using NFC. Audio quality: Let me start by saying that this is not an audiophile-quality speaker. Anyone expecting high fidelity from this one-piece stereo speaker will be (rightly) disappointed. As with any music system, the quality of the sound is only as good as the weakest component in the stream. For me, the weakest part of this system is the Bluetooth connection. The Bose Soundlink speaker sounds much better when using the wired auxiliary input connected to the line-out of a high-quality audio system. When playing lossless audio files (e.g. FLAC, WAVE, DSD, etc.), the sound quality is notably worse when using the Bluetooth. If your source files are “lossy” (e.g. MP3), the difference between auxiliary and Bluetooth input may not be as noticeable. With left and right channels coming from a single unit with a 4” grill, all separation in the acoustic image is lost and the Bose web site states that two units cannot be paired for better stereo separation. The speaker seems to be tuned for pop music, bass and mid-forward with treble buried beneath. Classical and jazz recordings sound muddy. Speaker phone: This was an unexpected feature and likely the one that I will use the most. Calls are clear on the sending and receiving ends. When paired with a phone, calls can be directed to the Bose Soundlink or to the phone’s speaker and microphone. The microphone on the Bose can also be used to issue voice commands to your Bluetooth device. Since the user’s manual describes using the auxiliary port with a 3.5mm stereo cable, I doubt that it supports microphone functionality through this connection. Bottom Line: Unless you need to share your MP3-quality tunes or phone calls with a group, you are better off with a wired headset or headphones. The Bose Soundlink II works well as a Bluetooth speaker phone and has respectable sound quality for its size and portability when using the auxiliary input jack. Music over Bluetooth suffers from the inherent limitations of the wireless protocol.

I recieved the Bose Soundlink 2 and was very excited to get it working. Once I took it out of the box, I was disappointed that it did not come with a charging block. Right off the bat, I was having to search for an extra one. The unit comes fully charged but will not work unless plugged in at least once for some reason. On to the good, the Soundlink 2 connected to my Android phone in seconds. I then proceeded to download the Bose Connected app and get into it. The connected app is weird when it comes to the volume. You must turn the speaker all the way up for the app volume to work correctly. What ever the speaker volume is set at once the app is connected, is the full volume, so make sure to turn it all the way up before connecting. I listened to multiple genres of music outside on my porch and in my large kitchen. The music carried itself very well but it is no wave radio. The bass is hollow and the highs are tinny. The best music was country music and rock was a close second. But when I turned on electronic and hip hop, it did not sound that great. The speaker is worth the money for most being cordless and portable to anywhere. For the money if ease of portability is not the issue, there is better speakers for the money. I do think it sounds better than the Beats Pill. If you want a good all around speaker, especially for the holiday parties to play holiday music in any room, I highly recommend the Bose Soundlink, but if you are looking to jam with some friends outside, find a stronger system.

Small Speaker with Big Impact but Carries Issues

I bought this speaker as a gift to myself for Christmas 2018. The sound button did not work throughout the 3 months I owned it. I had to turn it up and down with my phone's output volume. in April it was sitting on top of my computer and was bumped off and fell a total of 16 inches. That was it. It broke and would not turn on again. I was really unhappy with this. I called Bose and they ran through some ways that they could get it back working. None worked. So they immediately said they would exchange it for a new one. I sent my old one in with a pre-paid UPS label they sent me. They said the whole exchange would take 10 days. It only took 3 for them to send me my new speaker. This replacement works as intended and the volume goes up and down as designed. The sound quality is excellent and can fill up a large room. I have it in my office and people complement me on the sound all the time. The lows and highs are perfect.

Pros: Great sound quality, portable, good material, very easy to use. Cons: Bluetooth connection, naturally, can get spotty depending on how far away your paired devices are. Sometimes, but not often, the speaker either doesn't power on or doesn't charge, requiring a quick connection to the charger or a complete reset (holding the power button and options button simultaneously for a while), respectively. The most abysmal thing about this speaker in my experience is the battery life. Drainage can be slowed if you don't regularly use Bluetooth (the speaker supports a 3.5mm jack as an alternative), and if you turn it off immediately before you go idle. This is absolutely not a speaker to leave on without use unless you have it charged at all times, and while that is to be expected with wireless speakers, I would've liked to see a much better battery life. Verdict: Cons may outweigh the pros, but as long as you know what you're getting into, it is definitely a good speaker. I just wish I didn't pay $130 for it when there were many other options.

Pretty impressive for its size. Great sound! Limited to volume control of device it is paired with. I wish I would have gone a little bigger, I may still do that, but it is conveniently sized for easy mobility, takes up very little room. I had it for about 9 months and the battery had issues, not sure what, but it quit working altogether. Store warranty ran out, however, Bose hadn't and after calling them and troubleshooting, they determined it needed replaced. Regardless of this issue, Fact is Bose stands behind their product and I would and most likely will purchase another Bose system. Had the battery not malfunctioned so soon, I would have given 5 stars. Only 3 though due to my being inconvenienced.

We purchase 2 of these, the sound is good (as expected and for a wireless speaker) but we have had to exchange them both. The batteries are horrible. they don’t last the 7 hours it says it should. And when the battery dies out if you don’t charge it immediately (because you don’t use it everyday) the battery loses it charging capability and won’t charge again. We replaced them and now we keep them plugged when not in use which can ruin the batteries anyway. Slightly disappointed, as we have been loyal Bose costumers for a long time. Sadly I wouldn’t recommend these speakers.

Hello. Thank you for your review of the SoundLink Color II.

We're sorry that you have experienced these issues. However, we do not recommend that you constantly leave your speakers on charge as this will affect the charging cycles or the speaker.

You should not be having such problem where the speaker will not charge again. If you do experience this, I would strongly urge you to get in contact with our Technical Support so we can investigate this further.

      Warm Regards,

I purchased this for use with my Amazon Echo DOT. The good: - The speaker paired easily with "Alexa" and worked well from across the room - The build quality on this speaker is very good and is what I would expect from BOSE The bad: - No wall plug! It only comes with a USB cable. I understand that this is a portable bluetooth speaker but I don't want to be limited to my computer to charge it. At this price point I would expect a wall plug - The sound quality at full volume is very poor. I always expect a slight amount of distortion when a speaker is pushed that hard, but this was too poor to listen to. Overall I expected more from this speaker and am disappointed.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. Many Bose employees also integrate Alexa with our SoundLink Color speakers and we are thrilled to know you are enjoying it in this fashion. That USB cable is compatible with the type of USB wall charger that is common for smartphones and tablets. We would not expect distortion from any of our speakers, even at top volume, and would like to help troubleshoot with you to eliminate this right away. You can reach us at 1-800-379-2073. Great sound, quick pairing & fun while it lasted. Unfortunately, just 14 months later it's stopped pairing & I can't connect to it with any device. Now it's just a paperweight or trash because the warranty expired 60 days ago. Ridiculous. Should've bought the extended coverage which I've recently started purchasing on all my BB Electronics because they're just not built to last. Pfft. Just purchased the Sony BT speakers for 1/3 price. Hopefully they'll last longer but at least I've got the 2 year replacement if they don't! Enjoy while it lasts.

I love the sound the Bose Soundlink produces. I listen to music daily with everything I am doing therefore sound quality is important to me. If you are looking for a good mobile option for a Bluetooth speaker this is it. However, I have been through 2 of the speakers in under a year. The first one I purchased the charging port was damaged and would not charge properly only after using it three times and I had to return it. The second one, the battery itself completely died. Expect to purchase a Black Tie plan to make it completely worth it.

I bought this speaker and returned it because the sound was too muddy in the midrange frequencies. I love Bose products and have Bose stereo speakers for my home entertainment center. If you are looking at this speaker and your budget allows, definitely spend the extra $70 dollars and step up to the "Bose® - SoundLink® Mini Bluetooth Speaker II ". I really wish the store display would have been able to play the same demo songs on each speaker for comparison, it would have saved me and the store the trouble of a wrong initial purchase.

Like the speaker for low to medium volume. Not louder then medium though. Seems to get distorted a bit and the volume buttons are very troublesome. You have to push and push definitely not with ease. Bluetooth connection is great. Keeps a good charge for people that want to take it out. Good to use w Alexa Echo Dot. Find myself wiring to the JBL or the Bose Wave a lot for music. Not totally dissatisfied just not what I expected I guess for a Bose product as I said we have othe Bose products and they are great.

It was fine. I bought this because it played any audio that my phone makes. I had originally purchased a Sono speaker but I returned that because it didn't play Pandora. This will play any audio. Even YouTube or the sound your phone makes when typing a message. But I had to exchange for a new one after a month because it didn't charge fully. It took more than a day to charge to medium and it never went to high. I'm using the same one. Hopefully this won't have the same issue.

We had the prior model which was great for two years till the battery died. This version doesn't seem to have advantages - buttons aren't responsive, requires an app download, and oddly didn't come with the USB charger plug, just a cable. It still sounds fine, but use is less convenient. BECAUSE other products don't seem much better (we have 2 competing product) I will still recommend this product.

This is my second bose sound link. The first one lasted one year and then I couldn't get it to charge. This also happened with the second one the Soundlink Color Speaker II. I thought they would have corrected this problem. I did buy the protection so hopefully will be getting a new and improved version.

I would give this product a 5 EXCEPT .. I couldn't believe a product by Bose costing over $100.00 would come so incomplete. Bose "overlooked" such a small item. My Bose came with a cord USB for charging, but NO box to plug into then into wall. I don't think that would have set Bose back much, I was VERY close to returning this item, however, the recieptant had an extra "box" from her iPhone , so she wanted to keep it.

I know it is a challenge to get a full rich sound from a small enclosure, but I really expected better from Bose. Once I got the unit home, I was under-enthused by thin weak sound. Not only was the bass thin, but the over-emphasis on the upper range made the music sound thin and weak. I am not a fan of enhanced bass devices, so the younger set would probably be even less pleased by this unit.

Good speaker. Bose quality. However, you do not get a charger, only an USB cord. You will have to purchase a charging unit for the micro USB cord. This may explain how Bose lowers its price to be competitive. Add 20.00 to the cost of the speaker. Oh, I called the company and they wanted me to register the product and they would send me a charger. Hasn't happened. Fool me twice.

I could hear a slightly better sound quality than the previous model with the impression that the treble is more crisp sounding and the bass a little more solid. Before I saw this later model, I expected a more compact version, but it looks to me that it is actually bigger. I would spend recommend that you keep your money and invest instead on the Soundlink Mini II.
