The auxiliary insert used to be connected to an elbow and those would last a long time. I had my first pair (with the elbow) for 4+ years. I've had at least ten (without the elbow) pairs since then. Every single one of them has shorted out right at the bottom. Luckily, they are warrantied and I always buy the Geek Squad coverage. They'll always replace them for me if there is no physical damage.
