EXCELLENT speaker, with a few shortcomings.

With this small but mighty speaker barking out the Foo Fighters, I thought I would share a quick review for those considering it. Purchased from a local Best Buy in December, the speaker was relatively easy to set up, with minimal head-scratching as the instructions are basic at best. The speaker is gorgeous…gorgeous enough to convince my design loving GF that it was the right choice. Sound is deep (great bass for such a small primary speaker) and high tones are excellent. It very easily fills sound in the entirety of the main level of my house (1200 sq feet for the level it is located). The sounds is rich, deep, clear and delicate as needed. Really impressed with the speaker overall. Sound in all music genres I’ve listened to has been very good to excellent. Now as for the short-comings. As mentioned by other reviewers, the mid’s could be better and can sounds slightly weak compared to the high’s and bass. Thankfully the speaker’s app has a good adjustment for each so as to balance the sound as needed. The biggest issue I have is the inability to use dedicated music apps that can then play nicely with other apps in use. What I mean is that I almost solely use Apple Music, and playback will stop entirely when I then use my phone to look / open anything that has sound. So, no Facebook / Insta / Flipboard / YouTube etc if you are also streaming music directly from your phone - which is all I do. Each time a song is interrupted, which can occur just by scrolling on your phone and forgetting to turn off the phone’s sound (and sometimes not even then), you then have to go back to Apple Music and manually turn the song back on...it will not automatically start back up. It can be laborious. Just today I’d guess it’s happened a half dozen times. So, in short - it’s an excellent speaker, looks fantastic, fills up a small to average sound space with ease, and my only issues are the slightly weak mid’s and the very antiquated connectivity for music apps.

    Terrible connectivity options

Beautiful sound, horrible, horrible connectivity. Loses connection all the time. Can only connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi which is a hell lot of work to get working with modern routers, many don't even support that frequency anymore. It's never as simple ad connecting to Bluetooth and start listening. It's always something not working properly that needs 30 minutes to fix

    Obsolete Out of the Box

I love Love LOVE the sound of this speaker! I am a professional violinist and I actually planned on performing with this, using it for my back-up tracks. Well I got to an exclusive in-home performance venue (a day ahead, thank God!) and the house didn’t have 2.4G Wi-Fi, only 5G. The speaker just sat there like a brick. A gorgeous brick, but a $1000.00 brick nonetheless. No way to connect it with my iPad. Without the lesser Wi-Fi connection, it wouldn’t even pair via Bluetooth. This is completely unacceptable. IMHO this speaker is already obsolete. I will be returning it.

Sounds is immaculate. App is horrendous, bluetooth features won't connect to my TV. Reset/ reformat / reconnected and it won't pair. For the price. Its just as good as me returning it. Do not recommend.

Bad combination with Air Play 2

I've been using the speaker for about 6 months and unsure if it is the speaker or the Apple AirPlay 2, but the combination of both is just plain bad. I have Tidal on my main Stereo System and I never have any issues. The sound is Ok (maybe 3.5 stars) but not worth the trouble. Look for another solution.

    Great Audio But Seriously Flawed

First off the audio quality is fantastic on this piece and that is its saving grace, where this unit fails is in its setup / implementation / use. 1. Setup - if you have a more modern WiFi implementation in your home utilizing a mesh topology, you are walking into a world of despair with attempting to setup this device. The cheap WiFi implementation in this device is shocking given its astounding price tag. This device will ONLY connect to a 2.4GHz endpoint. If you have a shared SSID with all of your home devices, both 2.4GHz and 5GHz this device will refuse to connect. After much troubleshooting and actually taking the first Formation Wedge back because I thought the device was broken I made this realization. Fortunately for me I was able to deploy a standalone 2.4GHz network with a single device on it to make it function. Of all of the IoT devices I have deployed throughout the house, the single most expensive IoT device in the house (nests, roombas, ecovacs, you name it), has the WORST internet connectivity implementation. 2. Bluetooth - The Formation Wedge is a gorgeous product. Its a statement piece, the placement for mine is in my dining room on a console table. So naturally with it so prominently displayed people want to interact with it when we have guests. That is where the hassle begins. Did B&W walk through the product story of enabling Bluetooth for mobile device connectivity? You have to have the Formation app, be on the discreet WiFi Ap (see point above), and then in the app you can enable pairing. What a pain. Why can't we just hold down the Formation Button for 3s or something simple to put the device in pairing mode? Is that too much to ask? I have seriously considered simply replacing the Wedge with a significantly cheaper but still robust Bar style speaker that has figured out how to implement Bluetooth for those spur of the moment Spotify needs. 3. Latency - When you are able to overcome the top two, you are hit with the Latency issues. Admittedly I'm not using the device in a whole home audio setup, I don't have other Formation products in the house, I wanted a visual focal speaker and this one wins hands down. But when I am using the device with weapons in its arsenal I want it to be effective. The Wedge is setup via Spotify Connect on the family plan. When cooking / eating dinner and I want to listen to music its a frustrating game of "is this going to work?". Connecting to the Wedge via Spotify and then counting the seconds to see if audio will begin playing. Once its playing, try changing the volume either via Spotify or your mobile device, again its a frustrating game of latency. Volume Up, one one thousand, two one thousand, etc. I really want to love this device, again its saving grace is its audio. I even went as far as attempt to hook up a cheap Amazon Echo to the 3.5in in-line audio port on the Wedge, which turns out isn't enabled or functional, thus dashing those dreams of overcoming the bluetooth connectivity and latency issues outlined above. I'm really at a loss on what to do at this point.

    Not worth the money

I recently purchased the Bowers and Wilkins Formation Wedge. I was super excited to try this speaker and the brands new " Formation " line. Upon setup you need to download the Bowers and Wilkins mobile app and pair your product with the app. This was very complicated and required me using online help to get the Wedge paired. I'm using an LG V30. Apparently You have to turn on location on your mobile phone. No idea why but you do. After a few weeks I noticed the app wouldn't recognize the speaker. This happened more than it didn't. To pair a phone or product you have to utilize the app. Needless step for bluetooth connections in my opinion. Sound- probably the biggest reason people will buy this product is sound. The sound is nothing to really write home about. The sound ia basically all highs and lows. No mids. It sounds especially bright using bluetooth and Tidal. In fact using bluetooth it doesn't sound all that great period, no where near $900 level. Using Airplay is where things get better. Using I tunes I could EQ it and get some more midrange out of this thing. The soundstage is decent but nothing special for a single speaker. It goes decently loud but again, nothing over the top for a single speaker setup. The bass is quite good and I have to say I was impressed with the bass. Clarity and vocals were also great though on some songs this unit lacked impact. In conclusion I wouldn't recommend this speaker. At $900 it's way over priced for what it is. The sound quality and form factor are the most important factors in this category and at $900 it's just not worth it. You can get similar Sound quality from units costing half this price.

Thank you for purchasing Formation Wedge. We are sorry that you have had difficulties during the setup process. Your best resource for answering technical questions is to reach out to us at [email protected] . Formation products are setup via our app using Bluetooth Low Energy, which is automatically enabled for iOS devices but requires location services to be turned on with Android. All Formation products are setup with the app in order to unlock their full feature set. In your particular example, it seems you may have used Bluetooth and Airplay, the latter of which requires WiFi to function. Glad to hear that clarity and vocals (the mids) sounded great with Airplay. Like you, we’ve always found that the quality of bass (impact) is recording dependent. Some recordings have great slam and impact, and others very little. Our job is to let the recording be itself- we call that True Sound. bowerswilkinsus-ca
