Excellent headphones, great features

Although Bluetooth headphones have existed for quite some time now, I had never gotten myself any. I found myself content with cheap earbuds, but they would break about every month with constant use. I recently made the switch to a wired set of headphones for my desktop computer, but something like that was just too bulky for taking to campus or around on walks when I wanted to listen to music on my phone. So eventually, I saw these and tried them out, and I gotta say, I don't think I'll be going back to earbuds anytime soon.
The packaging on these are sleek and well out together. Inside the box, you'll find the headphones themselves, a carrying bag, a USB-C to USB-A cable, a 3.5mm cable, manual, and quickstart guide. They were happily quite easy to use, right out of box! Just switched them on, paired them wirelessly with my phone, and they worked! Very simple, and luckily without any issue.
These headphones have remarkably good sounds, and for quite well. They looked too small for me when I opened them (I'm a bigger guy, with a proportionally big head), but they fit marvelously. I even expected the earcups would hurt my ears after a few hours of listening, but it's been good so far! The sound is clear and crisp, it's plenty loud even on low settings, and the noise cancelling works fairly well. It doesn't entirely block out noise (which is good for me, I don't wanna be entirely unaware of stuff around me) but it cancels out all the small annoying noises that can disrupt listening.
These headphones have 5 buttons over the two earcups. On the right side is 4 of them, one to turn them on/off and connect to Bluetooth. The other three are two volume adjustment buttons (top and bottom), which will adjust sound levels on the connected device so you don't have to reach for it yourself. The middle let's you pause with ones touch, go forward one track with two presses, and back with three. The single button on the left side adjusts the noise cancellation, with low and high settings, an automatic setting (my preferred), and an option to turn it off. I also noted that they seem to recognize when you put them on, telling you if they are connected, and unpausing your music. A small feature, but it feels super cool nonetheless!
Battery life has been very good so far, with my few sessions of listening over the past three days only taking up not even requiring one charge. They supposedly have 20 hours of battery, but I've yet to do a full test of this. Charging is super easy, and the included USB-C cable means they can be plugged into any port to charge them. The headphones can also be connected via 3.5mm cable (also included) if your device doesn't have Bluetooth, or it is otherwise needed.
The construction of the headphones feels very strong, unlike a lot of other plastic frames. They fit comfortably on my head, and I can nearly forget they're there. I can't say if the sound quality is better or worse than other major brands, but for a casual user like me who just wants quality audio, it's perfect. I have no complaints there. You won't be disappointed with these.

Design flaw causes premature failure

Bought a pair of these in Feb 2021 and used them (with care, keeping them in their case when traveling and never abusing them) for just over a year. Right earcup then died; started sounding crackly and then cut out completely when I reached up to adjust. If you look around at reviews online, you'll see that these particular cans are known for this type of failure, apparently due to stress on the cabling as the earcups move. Don't make my mistake; get something else.

I bought these for my son. One thing I liked about them, aside from the bespoke brand, is the 2 year warranty. After 6 months, the right ear/ channel stopped working. Now I am having to deal with the company B&W has outsourced support to. No fun.
These are the 2nd pair of B&W headphones I've owned and they both have been bad experiences, both from a durability and comfort standpoint. Never again.

These are my first pair of over the hear wireless headphones. And I must say, they exceeded my expectations. The quality of these headphones is outstanding.
Sound: The sound quality is superb. Deep base and crisp highs. What I truly love about these is the noise cancellation, though. It has 3 settings (low, auto, high). It's immediately noticable when the noise cancellation is turned on. I work in a noisy office environment, and now having experienced noise cancellation, I don't think I'll ever use headphones that don't have it.
Quality: The materials used are top notch. Super comfy too. I was worried that on the ear headphones would be uncomfortable. And I was (mostly) wrong. It did take a bit getting use to and finding the wrong spot to wear them (which is slightly forward of the ear). But once I did, I didn't even notice them.
Features: They feature a mute on lift thing. Where when you pull an earcup off your ear, it automatically mutes. There are settings for this in the app. I found the low sensitivity setting even a little too sensitive. As even adjusting the headphones a bit would sometimes cause them to mute. Not a huge deal though.
Value: For the price they're hard to beat. I do wish the cords they came with were a bit longer. But overall I am very happy with them. They also come with a nice case to transport them in, which I found myself using taking them to and from work.
If you're looking for a solid pair of wireless headphones with noise cancellation, these are the ones you're looking for.

Beautiful Music to my Ears

I recently received these Bowers & Wilkins - PX5 Wireless Noise Canceling On-Ear Headphones. Prior to this I had used another popular brand of noise cancelling headphones that were a bit more expensive and I was very pleased with their performance, so my expectations were high. I am by no means a headphone aficionado but I thoroughly enjoy listening to crisp, clear, music and television. My review of these headphones is from a laypersons viewpoint.
The product packaging was very classic and higher end in comparison to other headphones that I have purchased. The actual headset was nestled in a custom fitted tray lined with a soft material to prevent scratches and possible damage during shipment. Inside the box I was surprised to find a compact carrying case-dark grey, in an almost tweed-like material with a soft inner lining. Inside this case were the charging and headphone jack cords. The cords were fairly standard and unremarkable in appearance but they did have Velcro straps attached to assist in storage.
The headphones themselves were smaller than I expected but the material and craftsmanship appear high-end. The trim on the headset is noted to be a carbon fiber composite. The padded earpieces and the underside of the head strap are a smooth leather material and softly padded. The top of the headphones and the back of the earpieces are covered in a textured microfiber. Though lightweight, they still feel substantial in your hand and after closer inspection they appear durable. The inside of the earpieces are labeled “L” and “R” with all but one of the control buttons located on the right-sided earpiece. The buttons are not labeled but consist of a sliding on/off switch that can be pushed forward and held in place Bluetooth linking, top and bottom buttons that control the volume, and the slightly raised center button that controls the play of the music as well as call management when the headset is in use as a earpiece. Below this is the USBC charging port. The lone button on the left earpiece controls noise cancelling. The headset size adjusts by gently pulling down on each side above the earpieces. I’m a woman and I don’t believe I have an especially large head and the headphones fit snugly but not tightly. There was plenty of additional room for expansion but probably not enough for a very large head. The amount of padding on the earpieces was more than adequate, very cushy and comfortable but as with any headphones my ears got warm/slightly sweaty with extended use. I also wear glasses and this headset did not affect my ability to comfortably wear them simultaneously. My personal experience led me to loosen the headset after about an hour of wear due to some uncomfortable pressure on my scalp from the head strap. This resolved the issue quickly and easily.
The box contained no detailed information or operation manual but did have a card with several easy to understand diagrams regarding operation of the device. The packaging advertises a battery life of up to 20 hours of continuous play on a single charge. Over the last few days I have not approached 20 hours of use but the battery level is monitored by my phone and remains at around 80% after 4-5 hours of use. I plugged these in to charge them before use and discovered that the charging light was green-indicating they arrived with at least a partial charge. Be aware that while the charging cord is provided, the charger is not. Any standard wall charger that takes a USB cord should be sufficient, with a fast charger preferred since the headset is advertised as fast charging.
I downloaded the Bowers & Wilkins PX app from the Play Store quickly and without any issues. I was required to enable the Bluetooth and location services on my Galaxy S9 in order for the app to function properly. Pairing the phone and headset occurred simply and was successful on the first try. Additionally, whenever I used the headset afterward they would automatically pair. The headset is supposed to be able to update its hardware and functionality via updates sent to your phone and transmitted to the headphones via Bluetooth. I have not had these long enough to experience the need for an update so I cannot comment on the ease of doing so at this time. The app states that the headset can pair with up to 8 devices before needing to clear the device memory and that they may be paired to two devices simultaneously (i.e. your phone for calls and a tablet for a movie). Attempting to use the app had me a bit lost. While the format is simplistic with simple pictures and minimal writing I was unsure how to proceed after opening it so I tapped the “?” icon in the top right corner and discovered a menu which provided all of the information I was seeking for setup/use/customization of the settings. I was unable to get the app to link with the headset to allow me to use the customization features despite repeated attempts at restarting my phone, the app, uninstalling and reinstalling the app. I will add that I’m often not the most tech-savvy and search for assistance with issues on YouTube often.
I found the adjustable noise-cancelling feature of the headphones to be exceptional as it blocked background noise more than sufficiently without me needing to increase the volume. I listened to music in a room with children playing and another person watching television. I also wore these in a car with music playing while listening to an audiobook.
The wear sensor worked as advertised-even without access to the features on the app. Removing the headset or raising the ear cup caused the audio to pause automatically and reapplying allowed it to automatically resume. This feature was very handy, preventing losing your place when listening to lectures or audiobooks.
When listening to a movie I found the sound quality was very good-not theater quality but definitely above average. Listening to music was better for me. I’d definitely rate these headphones an 8/10 for sound quality. My personal experience is that sound is better with wired headphones and conveniently these do include a headphone jack that I did use. The wireless functionality allowed me to wander at least 50 feet from the paired equipment but I did experience intermittent signal interference after going downstairs into my basement.
My overall impression of this headset is that it is an attractive, sound, high-quality piece of equipment. The price point may be a bit high if these are for occasional, casual use but they appear to be a good investment for frequent, especially extended use.

Comfortable on-ear with good sound

With headphones, what sounds good for one is so-so for another, but I'm pleased with the sound. I do EDM music production and needed a decent wireless headset to enjoy music with ANC and some mild critical listening ability. These are not neutral 'phones and their 35 mm drivers only provide so much depth.
For me, though they are superbly comfortable for someone who wears glasses, are lightweight, and look better in person. Went for the space gray because couldn't find the blue anywhere in person and unsure if they would look good or cheap in person. Space gray is classy, but not nearly as striking as my soft gold PX.
If you have PX (last model) over-ear these have a different sound signature --bass heavy but not boomy. Treble on the PX5 are rolled off, do not "sparkle"--dark and warm but not muddy. Wearing glasses make them more balanced for some reason. However, B&W needs to add an EQ to its app, c'mon! Premium brand.
Also, ANC is refined and barely alters the sound quality. The previous PX model destroyed the sound quality with the highest ANC level. Haven't tested them on a flight yet, but they block out home-level noise very well.
Overall, one of the few on-ears I can wear and enjoy.

Really Nice Headphones, a Few Annoyances
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
The Bowes & Wilkins PX5 Headphones are a very nice set of headphones. They offer some really nice features, but do come with a few annoyances. I'll talk about both.
First, the good. The headphones come in great packaging, and include a very nice carrying case. The headphones are made with carbon fiber construction, and you can feel the build quality as you handle them and make adjustments for fit. Nice engraving on the outside of the ear cups add a nice touch. Connection to my phone and tablet were very easy. The first connection can be made when you first power the unit on, but additional connections are best done through the app (download the headphones app, not the PX app). Music played from my iPhone was pleasantly nice--there was quite ample bass, balanced treble, and great clarity and crispness. I play all types of music--classical, pop, disco, big band--they all sounded very nice. Fit is quite snug. I don't have a huge head--however, even after wearing the headphones for more than two hours straight, there were no issues. I also found the auto-pause feature handy. If the headphones sense removal from your head, they auto-pause, then it auto-plays when they are back on your head. So from a functional standpoint, the headphones are great.
Now, some of the annoyances. When handling the headphones, sometimes I hit the buttons on the ear cups. I've found I have to grab the earphones at a certain spot to avoid doing this. With the noise cancellation, I found that it works mostly well. I first wore the headphones in the office with the noise cancellation on AUTO. Couldn't hear any chatter from my co-workers, and I couldn't even hear the clicks from my keyboard or mouse. Next was a walk outside. AUTO was not good at adjusting to road noise or chirping birds. I had to switch the setting to HIGH for a consistent experience. I think AUTO uses signal averaging, so it is best to use AUTO when the environment you are in has a consistent level of noise. I'm guessing that AUTO will work great on an airplane when watching a movie. I also wish the pads for the ears were real leather instead of a fake pleather. At this price point, I would have expected that. I also wish the headphones were a bit more collapsable. In the case, they are still somewhat bulky. Lastly, the app is pretty much useless except for managing your bluetooth connections and receiving firmware updates. For example, where is the equalizer so I don't have to use the one on my phone?
If you can get past the minor annoyances, these are really nice headphones. Sound quality is very, very good, build quality is good. For what I use headphones for, they fit the bill perfectly.

These are Premium Headphones

From the beginning, the unboxing of these headphones just subtly say that these are premium headphones. The box is thick, sturdy and glossy, and upon opening it you are presented with the headphones nestled in a cushy velvet lining, which you gently pull out using two short silky ribbon tabs on either side. What you find underneath is a nice carrying case made of an understated grey fabric, an aux cable, a usb-c charging cable, and a small booklet of instructions and such. A visual quick-start type large card is included as well (that’s all I needed to use to start using the headphones). Connection was quick and easy to both my iPhone and iPad. I downloaded the recommended app that you can use with the headphones but I didn’t end up using it or needing it, either.
The headphones are comfortable, with soft cushioned cups over the ears and a cushioned headband. I normally do not like these type of headphones because they usually always make my head hurt after awhile (too heavy), sometimes my ears too (too tight). But these are lightweight yet still substantial. I was able to wear them through the watching of two movies back to back with no problems.
The sound, which of course is the most important aspect, is also premium. Very crisp and clear. I watched movies that I had seen before, and I could hear background noises and sounds that I normally wouldn’t hear from my normal television set or regular headphones. Sounds like the pitter-patter of rain, the subtle clink of silverware, the scratching of a quill on parchment paper. Then I put the headphones to the ultimate test—my husband, who loves listening to music and is pretty discerning when it comes to sound quality. He gave it the thumbs up and says that they are very good. I told him too bad, he can’t have them. I also tried out the noise-cancelling feature, using my three kids who were clamoring for my attention. Suffice it to say, the noise-cancelling feature works.

Outstanding Headphones

These headphones are built with quality in mind! The brand is known for being a leader in sound quality and they deliver with these headphones. They connect to devices quickly and easily. Buttons on the headphones themselves are simple to operate and the noise canceling options are superb. I love the auto pause feature when you pull one of the sides away from your ear, the music will resume playing when you place them back on your ear!! These PX5 headphones have more balanced sound vs some of the other high quality wireless headphones I have from some familiar brands in the marketplace. The construction surprised me as they feel very well built, heavy where needed and comfortable to wear. If there was anything I can be critical of it is the storage bag these come with, every time you slide the headphones in the bag you need to be extra cautious to stretch it open as to not stress the carbon fiber headphone frames, I also would be curious to see how these age with constant sliding against the inner fabric. Highly recommend these headphones!!!!!

Sound great but lack comfort

I've never owned any Bowers and Wilkins speakers, but I wanted to try these headphones out. To begin with, they just look cool. They have a very sleek look. I like the way the ear cup hinge is a minimalist design with interesting swiveling arms. The materials they used give the phones a very upscale appearance (as you might expect from a company used to making high end speakers). They sit relatively comfortably on your head and are adequately padded. Ear cups have a good amount of foam padding and are very soft to the touch. They are comfortable enough and I'm able to wear them for an hour or so without my ears hurting. The cups have a good amount of tension on them, this helps them to stay in place without slipping off your head, but after a time, I found myself fidgeting with them to try and find a more comfortable position. This is probably caused by the narrow headband which is not as padded as the ear cups and I never felt like I had them in the right spot.
Connecting them to my S10+ was no problem at all, although I found that the free app makes this process a little easier, I was able to connect them without using the app. The app itself is very basic and doesn't offer any equalization features, which was a bit disappointing. As far as the controls are concerned, I really loved the way they are laid out. On the right ear you have a Bluetooth button, transport control and volume controls, the charging port and 3.5mm audio in jack. All are very easy to find with your finger tips. The left ear has just one button to cycle through the noise canceling levels. They come with three levels of noise canceling and also an “auto” position which will set the level for you. Cycling through all the different levels, I never really heard any difference between them. Overall they were very quiet and that's maybe due to the ear cup padding, and I rarely hear any external sounds when I'm wearing them but I really couldn't hear any difference in the noise canceling levels.
I do like the fact that they pause playback if you lift one of the ear cups off your ear. Some people have complained that it takes a second (literally) for the music to pause and then another second to resume, but honestly, if it was any less than that you would run the risk of them pausing the music every time you adjusted the fit. I really liked this feature and I found it to work extremely well. It's a welcome feature on a set of headphones that is as quiet as these are. The sound quality is on the upper side of good. I would have liked just a tad more bass, but they do sound really good. I won't say great because there are better sounding ones out there, but they are certainly good, and I will not hesitate to use them over any of my other headphones. I also noted that the sound pressure levels are a bit on the weak side. If you're looking for a set of phones that are clear and have a nice clean sound without over coloring, then you should give these a try.
There are people out there that claim to be audiophiles and because of that, they think you should listen to them but, what it comes down to is this. These are consumer grade headphones and not intended for professional studio work. Can you find better headphones out there? Of course. But these offer a lot of good features. They are built very well, and don't seem fragile at all. The sound quality is very good and for almost everyone out there, will sound great. The noise canceling feature does work well even though I didn't really notice a difference in the various levels. And the pause feature when you lift an ear cup is really cool and very welcome. Very few of us wear headphones for hours a day, but if you do, I don't recommend these. However, they are just fine for an hour or two at a time before they start becoming uncomfortable. The soft pouch they come with is nice but could have been better received if it was a hard shell.

Sounds great with decent active noise canceling

When you put these in they sound amazing. This has active noise canceling which can be high, low or auto. For on ears these do a decent job at cancelling noise. It will block out an airplane well enough. As far as sound quality goes this is a neutral sounding headphone focusing on clarity then that bass punch.
Inside the box you’ll find: pouch , 3.5 m cable and usb C to USB A cable.
It has Bluetooth 5.0, apt X adaptive for better video latency, AAC and SBC codecs so it should do great on platform

These B&W PX5 headphones are very solid. The sound, build quality, packaging, and aesthetics are all amazing. The app works very well and I haven't noticed any bugs yet.
The noise cancelling is definitely top notch and works incredibly well. You can adjust the noise cancelling level with the button on the headphones or via the app.
Battery life is excellent also. You get up to 25 hours on a full charge and you can get 5 hrs of use after about 15 minutes of charging.
Another excellent feature is the built in wear sensor. When you pull off the headphones, or lift one side off of your ear the sound will stop until you put it back on. Now I usually end up tucking the headphone behind one of my ears and in this case the sound will come back since the sensor thinks it's back on my ear. Not a problem really but something worth mentioning.
The overall experience of setting up and general use of the headphones is excellent and on par with other high end brands. Very simple and straightforward.
The one downside to these headphones for me is the comfort level. My ears do better with over ear headphones rather than on ear. With these I get some discomfort after about an hour of use. I'm sure my ears will get used to it but there is definitely some pain after a while.
Overall, these headphones are excellent. If you want great sound with a stress free setup and cool features then pick these up!

Audiophile review; search for exception sound ends
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I am an audiophile who was in search for the best sound quality in a bluetooth headphone; noise canceling ability was not part of the main criteria.
After owning Sennheiser HD1 Momentum, Bowers & Wilkins PX7 - I got rid of both of them. Sennheiser is very good and sounds very very good for a Bluetooth headphone; but is was missing the joy of music. Then I tried the B&W PX7 for several days and I really wanted to like it - there is one main flaw with the PX7; something is awefully wrong with the treble tuning. I own Bowers & Wilkins 603, 606, HTM6 and 607 full size speakers & have listened to the 700 series speakers for a long time at a friend's house; so I am fully aware of B&W trademark sound signature. While attempting to reproduce the sound signature similar to their amazing full speakers; B&W mostly succeeded in the bass, mid bass and midrange frequencies; but something got really messed up in the treble regions - as also measured by rtings dot com. This particular issue basically makes the sound cheaper and not as crystal clear; it was truly disappointing and because this one important flaw I decided to return the PX7. Given B&W is known to produce exceptionally clear treble I had high expectations for the PX7 and it truly failed in the treble area and did not reproduce the signature B&W sound in the treble region; elsewhere it did excellent.
I did want to give up on my search. Here comes PX5 to save the day. It reproduces the entire frequency range with the signature B&W sound with exceptional clarity; bass would score a solid A- ; midrange would score a solid A+; treble will score a solid A. Now I don't have to go my listening room to fire up the B&W 606s to enjoy the music. I can get almost 70% of the same wonderful sound with the PX5. Now that is a high compliment.
Finally, for the noise canceling aspect & long time wear comfort I bought myself a Bose QC 35 II for those long flights.
If you are in search of exceptional sound, skip the PX7, buy the PX5 and it will take you into true music bliss only Bowers & Wilkins can deliver. A true musical delight!!! Enjoy your PX5!
