Overall, the Breville Express is a fantastic espresso machine. It pulls accurate shots almost every time, and looks great in the kitchen. The only downside is that the steam wand doesn’t work well. It takes forever for it to steam, and half the time doesn’t really work the way you’d want it to. Luckily, we mainly drink iced.

Best Espresso machine that I have owned, at least for the value and ease of use. Quick and easy to clean and descale. Grinder works very well, once you get the setting that you like. You will have to experiment at first, but once you get it, its just fine.

The pick up process was so easy. I now use the machine every single day without any issues. I've convinced 3 of my friends to buy. It is an amazing product, a great product for people who are beginner in making espresso!

    Great Cappuccino at Home

I've been researching expresso machines for 3-4 years and was reluctant to make a commitment since pricing ranged anywhere from $200 to $5000. As an amateur barista (that means I love my cappuccino but not Starbucks prices) I took the plunge on the Breville Express machine after reading extensive reviews and watching several videos. The ~$700 price was reasonable but the real tipping point was the integrated grinder. To be fair I also own a Breville toaster which is the best I've ever had so the brand is viewed very favorably. I can already see getting the double boiler machine in the future but not ready for that price tag yet. Milk foaming had a little learning curve, but overall very easy to use. Warning -- this machine will spoil you. Oh did I mention this it also looks good in the kitchen .... LOVE MY MORNING CAPPUCCINO...!

Overall, excellent features and a solid machine for this price point. If you are serious about your coffee, pre-ground is off the table. The grinder is highly adjustable, even top bur can be removed and adjusted for finer or coarser grind if grind size doesn't yield a good shot. The grounds get staticy, but hey, you just got a machine with a built in grinder for about $700, so be grateful it works. The dosing (amount of coffee programmed to release for a single or double shot) is adjustable as well. I played with both of these settings and still had extraction trouble. Luckily, YouTube came to my rescue with tons of videos available to problem solve any issue I was having. Ultimately, I had to adjust my top bur because my shots were pouring too quickly (aiming for 25 seconds) and the pressure gauge wasn't reaching the espresso range. Once I adjusted the top bur using a video from Seattle Coffee Gear, I got great results using the single wall filter baskets. The shot volume is programmable by time, not volume, but it does allow you to get close to 1oz for a single shot and 2oz for a double. The tamper is magnetic and is stored elegantly in the machine. It works well. There is a razor included to help you measure dosing, but it really isn't necessary. Use the tamper and as long as the silver is mostly below the rim of the portafilter, you're there. It really is a bit of an art, and just takes time to figure out. I stick with the same beans because to me, Kaladi Trieste are perfection, but if you like to experiment, you will likely need to do some fine tuning with each new batch. All of these things matter because if your shot pours too quickly it will be sour. If it pours too slowly it will taste burned and bitter. Now for the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. So much of the machine is plastic and just screams "I will break within three years!" Perhaps even more irksome than the amount of plastic is that the steam wand is powered by a non-adjustable knob with three settings-steam, hot water, and off. I would strongly prefer adjustable steam pressure. Steaming takes about 45 seconds for each milk based drink. With some practice and a decent sized milk frothing pitcher, you can get some good micro-foam. The pitcher that comes with the machine is very high quality, though a bit small if you'd like a larger latte. This is a single boiler machine which means you can't brew coffee and steam milk at the same time. I let the machine heat up for 20 minutes before using with the portafilter in place (without coffee) before using it and that seems to help with a faster transition to steam from coffee brewing. If I were to do it over again I would go for a higher end but less fancy machine like the Gaggia Classic Pro and a separate grinder like the Eureka Silenzio. That's about an $1100 investment, though. I will say that once I get into something, I tend to go overboard and am now looking at much higher end prosumer level machines, so if you think you can keep your head about you once you dive into the magical world of espresso, this might be the perfect machine for you. For the features, you really can't beat what you get for this price.

Breville A Barista In Your Home

Bought my wife this machine for her birthday because it was her number one wishlist item. She loves it and now makes us a professional cup of coffee every morning. The milk frother is loud though and can be a bit annoying plus there is maintenance, but overall it's worth the time and effort. Investing in a separate handheld milk frother can speed things up.

I’ve been using the Breville Barista Express for a while now, and overall, it’s been a great experience! The espresso quality is fantastic—honestly, it feels like I’m enjoying a cup from a high-end coffee shop right in the comfort of my home. The design and build quality are exceptional. It’s clear that Breville put a lot of thought into creating this machine. It looks sleek on my countertop and feels sturdy, which is always a plus for appliances like this. That said, the milk frother and grinder are still a bit of a challenge for me to master, even after some time. This machine is definitely more manual than I anticipated, which can be a good thing for those who love to experiment and perfect their craft. However, looking back, I think I might have preferred a more automated machine to simplify the process. If you’re someone who enjoys having control over every aspect of your espresso-making process, this is a fantastic choice. But if convenience and automation are more your style, you might want to explore Breville’s more automated models.

I've had a similarly priced Gaggia for years, it finally bit the dust. I was hesitant to buy a Breville, thinking it wouldn't be as 'quality' of a product. I was wrong, this thing is AWESOME! It looks really nice on the counter, and it seems like a lot of thought was put into the design, down to the hidden storage drawer for the extra parts. The tamper fits magnetically out of the way, and everything is right where you need it. Not much of a learning curve if you are used to a non-pod espresso system. The frother makes amazing foam as well.

Amazing quality, design and easy to use. Breville has design a very easy to use and operate espresso machine that can make your coffee taste better than any of your local shops. Stainless steel design is very easy to clean and maintain. Recommend getting a mat to easy move coffee machine around your table top. The warranty offered by Breville is also good investment of your product.

Would I buy this again? Yes and no. First and foremost, this is a great product, I use it everyday and have not experienced any issues whatsoever. It is built well and works exactly as advertised. It’s also not for everyone, as there is a learning curve. The espresso you pull will be subject to user error, so the better your skills — the better the result. I started with no skills, but it did not take long to start pulling some really good shots. YouTube is your friend and there are a lot of great resources that will have you pulling great shots in no time. I do not regret this purchase and it has lived up to all of my expectations. There are some shortcomings of this machine. The most annoying is the non-standard portafilter size that limits the accessories for this machine. There are a couple of companies making accessories specifically for Breville, but there is a world of tools that are not compatible with this machine. I glossed over this when I bought the machine, but it is more annoying than I initially realized. The steam wand is good not great. It works but it takes time to build up steam. It can be difficult to make several drinks in a row with consistent results. In my opinion I believe that this is the best machine in its price category to make a latte that tastes better than your average commercial coffee shop. The downside is that now I have learned how to use it, I am addicted to the process and science of making espresso. This is a very good machine to learn on, but in the future, I will upgrade to a machine that has more bells and whistles, with a more standard portafilter size. If you don’t feel like spending thousands on an espresso machine, this is a perfect option and will absolutely make a great espresso.

I absolutely love the espresso I can make with this machine. Coffee beans are ground perfectly and the crema that is created once the coffee is extracted is fantastic. It is great for a novice espresso maker and also those who are more experienced. The steamer is also fantastic. I make lattes with a thick, decadent foam and am able to do latte art perfectly with the density of the foamed milk. It's a fun machine and easy to use. I no longer go to Starbucks, because the coffee I make at home is much better! If you don't know how to make fresh espresso I suggest doing a little research first (on pressure, the coarseness of the grind, etc.) that will perfect your technique. It's a beautiful looking machine as well. Totally love it.

This is a great way to get into espresso. Is it expensive? Yes. Is the the most expensive/best? No. This is the gateway drug of espresso for many many people. The grinder on here is decent, but you can definitely do better. The portafilter is good enough, but can be improved. The frother is nothing to write home about. But all of this is something only a espresso snob would tell you. The machine is easy to use, offers great features, and can be used to replace whatever coffee you normally pay $5-10 each for. Again, it's not the best machine out there. But the more you experiment with machines and equipment the more you will realize that this is able to produce great espresso shots. You can get better of course, but it's not to say that a machine that costs double this one will produce coffee 2x better. It will be marginally better. If you are starting out, pull the trigger. Learn how to master this machine, and when/if you want to make marginally better coffee then you can think of upgrading to something better.

I love my new toy I use it every morning, great tasting expresso and much quicker to use than my previous unmentionable machine. I just have a little trouble dialing in every time I use a different beam or whenever I switch from single to double portafilter. Bottomline great product for the money

4 Stars because this model has been $599 for many years, this year it went up to $699 with a 1 year warranty but nothing is new about it. The other Breville espresso makes have 2 year warranty's. OK, with that out of the way it's still the best complete espresso maker under $1,000 (meaning it has a grinder built in and a non-pressurized basket to make real espresso shots. So it's still a good buy. Can you get better, yes, like a Gaggia Pro for $450 and a $400 good grinder separate will make better shots in a full size 58mm portafilter, but that is not for everyone and you would be at $150 more. So yes this $700 complete unit is still the best at this price point hands down.
