Breville’s BOV860 is Breville’s newest entry into the countertop oven space. Like previous models, it offers a plethora of cooking modes, Breville’s Element iQ system (4 different elements individually controlled to heat evenly), and easy to use controls. Unlike previous years, Breville is capitalizing on the growing popularity of air frying by including it in the name ‘Smart Oven Air Fryer’. While the most astute might see this as simply a new mode to highlight the super convection settings of previous models - the included basket and mode are no joke. Breville is smart to hop on this latest fad (or non-fad in my opinion). If you’ve ever considered a Breville convection oven, the BOV860 models will definitely be familiar. Breville has incorporated the same design over the past near decade. That isn’t hurling any insults - in fact I would say it’s laudable. The design itself is timeless, incorporating dials and buttons that are easy to use, and an LCD screen that is backlit and responsive. Nothing is over-engineered here - rather it feels just right. Adjusting the temperature, or time are accomplished through the largest dials, while the mode selection is a smaller dial near the start button. The start button itself is a momentary press that illuminates when the cooking cycle is running. There are four smaller buttons that adjust the temperature unit (Celsius to Fahrenheit), turn on/off the oven light, adjust the convection setting, and finally one that helps communicate that you’re cooking frozen foods. Capitalizing on the engineering to get this right is wise and using dials for the numeric entry tasks beats a number pad every time. The dials themselves are fun to use with smooth action, and responsive feel. It's akin to a high end audio system. The overall design is also quite nice. The Black Truffle color blends nicely in my black/stainless kitchen. The door handle is a stainless that is solid feeling and moved far enough away to avoid burnt hands. The interior has magnets, instead of wire mechanisms, that help pull the cooking tray out when you open the door. The door is very eager to close, so be careful to hold on to it all the way as it will slam shut and potentially knock your food to the crumb tray. The removable crumb tray is easy to pull out and clean and blends perfectly with the design. There are also nice design touches, like turning the light on during the last 30 seconds of a cycle so you can see if your food is truly ready - and adjust for more time and temperature adjust if needed. The beeping of the oven is a bit loud for my tastes (as our family room is adjacent to the kitchen). The included accessories, a pizza pan, wire rack, broiling rack, roasting pan, and air fry basket slot into one of three positions. The window includes reminders of where each should go for different modes. For instance the broil mode is etched into the glass as the top position while the air frying basket is shown on the middle position. The interior is spacious, and accommodating of a decent amount of food. Our old toaster oven would require several usages just to warm up leftover pizza for our family, whereas the Breville can accommodate 4-5 slices from a large pizza easily. Out of the box the Breville sports 13 modes: Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Broil, Pizza, Cookies, Reheat, Warm, Air Fry, Slow Cook. I used about 6 of the modes so far, and have had generally positive results. As with any kitchen appliance, there is some learning involved on the operator side, but generally speaking the modes did what they claimed. Air frying: The titular air fry setting operated perfectly - even beating my dedicated air fryer at its own game. The included basket is large and accommodating. Fries were crispy, chicken nuggets were cooked to perfection. Unlike my dedicated air fryer, there is a preheating time for best results. That said frozen to cooked took maybe 2-3 more minutes in total. We tried this setting with reheating some fast food leftovers, and it delivered the goods in just a few minutes. This is by far the most used mode so far, as many frozen foods crisp up so nicely without burning using air frying. Toast/Bagel: The toast setting was a bit of a conundrum. I’m not sure if it just is our choice of bread or what, but this toaster on the lightest setting seemed to overdo it. The toast was good, but maybe we just like our toast not quite as crispy as Breville? And perhaps lending credence to the bread type was the fact that Bagel seemed to do a better job for us. Pizza: Frozen pizza’s aren’t normally our thing - but occasionally we’ll not want to have to deal with the cost or time of delivery. Here the oven did a great job of cooking the pizza when following the convection oven directions. We’ve had decent luck with our full oven, but the Breville seems to just be better at it. Crust was crispy, toppings were just the right amount of crisp, and the cheese was thoroughly melted. Reheat: The reheat setting is one of our more used functions for a toaster oven. Leftovers are very common in my household, so this one is an important mode for us - as the microwave doesn’t do great with anything that includes bread or breading. Here the oven did a good job, but took significantly longer than our previous toaster oven (an infrared model). Pizza that would take 3 minutes in our old oven generally took 6 minutes to reheat here. This was offset by the fact the capacity was much larger. Perhaps there’s a bit of ‘dialing in’ we need to do yet to understand how to use this setting effectively, but ensuring not to overcook, but just reheat effectively is important. Bake: I only used bake mode once, but it seemed to do a good job of standard convection cooking. It’s nice to know, especially on hot summer days, that we could still do a frozen lasagna without firing up the full sized oven. The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer is a versatile piece of kitchen equipment. While nothing can beat the speed of the microwave, toaster ovens have a special place in my heart for warming up food quickly and deliciously. Breville offers a strong option here with the super convection providing the equivalent of a dedicated air fryer. Being a huge proponent of my air fryer, seeing this toaster oven do it so effectively means I can free up some more cupboard space. Compared to our old infrared oven, this oven is louder - especially when super convection is on. Still it is much quieter than our dedicated air fryer. The sheer capabilities of this oven should make it a short list purchase of anyone living in a space constrained kitchen. I like the fact that it can do so many things, and do them well while maintaining a relatively small counter space investment. While larger than our old infrared toaster oven, it required only a little more width while offering a ton more cooking space. The ability to do slow cooking as well is something that while I haven’t tried yet (and so far each mode does exactly what it promises), seems like yet another function that replaces a large dedicated piece of equipment. Even if you have the space for dedicated devices, the Breville makes things so easy to use. The convenience and ease of use make this a device worth investing in. Despite perhaps needing to figure out how to get my toast perfected, and quiet the beeper, the Breville has won a permanent space on my countertop. Definitely recommend this oven!

I have had TWO Breville pros, and they both worked fine but crapped out in about 18 months; one was the heating elements, and the other was peeling inside of Teflon coating, which is unexplainable and inexcusable! I just purchased a Kitchen Aid which seems better overall.

Not the same oven we purchased last time. The old (larger) Smart Oven Air is now the Smart Oven Air "Pro". If we had known they changed the name we would have purchased the Pro version. It's nearing Christmas time and no time for exchange. The Grinch must be making these ovens now.

I am so impressed with this device. Out of the box it was super easy to set up and it is well engineered. From the easy pull plug to the tray level indicators on the front door all the controls are easy to understand and use. This is packed with features which usually means hours with the manual. If you are familiar with a toaster oven with convection then you can probably take to using this right away. For me the air fryer function is what I use every day. It works great for frozen precooked and raw products by cooking them evenly. The oven light makes things easy to see to check on progress. There is so much more from warming (which I used to proof bread perfectly) to slow cooking (no more dragging the crock pot out making space etc..) you really can replace several devices with this one appliance. I have had many toaster ovens, toaster / convection ovens and this one is clearly the best. I have used it to cook a variety of foods and it works perfectly. Usually I try to mention a down side when I take the time to put in a review but with this the only thing I can think of is to put a piece of foil on the crumb tray to make it easier to clean. After that all I can say is happy eating!!

This oven is nice and compact. It’s spacious enough for a 12” pizza but takes up a small footprint. It’s not quite as spacious as our previous countertop oven but doesn’t feel cramped or smallish during use. Oddly, when I compared the specs of each oven the physical dimensions listed in the specs were nearly identical. I thought that seemed odd due to the obvious visual size difference, so I measured with a tape measure. The depth of this oven is spec’d at 14.6” but usable space is actually closer to 13”. The full depth measures 14.6” if including the small internal recessed cavity in the back wall. Since nothing can reasonably fit in this cavity other than maybe the tip of a sandwich, I don’t really consider it part of the usable depth. Setup was easy and straightforward for the most part. I washed all the pieces before use as instructed, wiped down the inside of the oven with a damp cloth and dried it thoroughly. I then tried to insert the crumb tray but mistakenly thought it was supposed to be inserted inside the oven. After a few frustrating minutes and one unsightly interior scratch from the crumb tray, I realized I was supposed to install it into the exterior cavity underneath the door. The instructions only show a generic illustration of the tray being inserted with an arrow pointing towards the oven. A more detailed illustration or clearer instructions would have likely helped me avoid the initial mix-up and subsequent scratch to the interior finish. I then performed the initial 20 minute burn-in as instructed. The user guide says the burn-in is to burn off protective substances from the heating elements. The oven emits pretty strong vapors during burn-in. The guide says the vapors are harmless but I opened several windows and suggest doing the burn-in in a well ventilated area. Thankfully, the odor didn’t last long but again, that was also with numerous windows open. Cooking with the oven is simple and intuitive. There are numerous presets for different cooking scenarios. These presets include toasting, baking, roasting, broiling, slow cooking, reheating, warming and air fry. There are also presets for specific food types like pizza, cookies, toast and bagels. Most of the presets use convection by default. Air fry uses “super convection”. The convection can be toggled off if desired. That’s good because convection can dry out certain foods and I don’t always want to use it. The oven bakes like a champ. I just select a preset, make any desired adjustments, set the timer and hit start. Basic baking is very good and cooks nice and evenly on the top and bottom if using the middle rack. Pizza, cookies and pork chops all baked nice and evenly in normal baking mode. We havent encountered any issues with any hot or cool spots during cooking. Ironically, we don’t normally use toaster ovens for toasting but I did toast a few slices of wheat bread just for testing purposes and was satisfied with the results. It toasts nearly as fast and well as our regular toaster but can handle a lot more slices at once. It also allows adjusting the level of toast darkness. The air fry seems to work as well as our dedicated air fryer. We’ve only cooked fries and French toast sticks with the air fryer so far but they came out just as well as when we use our dedicated air fryer. My only concern is that oils and juices can drip down from the air fry basket onto the crumb tray and lower heating elements. There are a few neat features with this oven. The door has dual magnets that align with the main rack and pull the center rack out a little when the door is opened and pushes it back when the door is closed. This is very handy if a mitt isn’t readily available or if the cook wants to take a quick close-up peek at food or check food temperature during cooking. There is also an interior light which is a very welcomed feature. This is the first toaster oven we’ve ever owned equipped with an interior light and it’s extremely useful. I also like the clear and concise illuminated controls. There is never any question whether the stove is active or not and key features are easy to quickly identity and use. The Breville smart oven air fryer is a nice combo appliance that is capable enough to replace two countertop appliances with one. We’ve temporarily retired our dedicated air fryer. As long as we don’t run into any unforeseen issues with air frying, it will likely stay retired because we appreciate the reclaimed counter space. It’s not the largest countertop oven in terms of interior cooking space but is sufficient for a small to moderate sized family. In addition to the wire rack, it also includes several helpful cooking utensils including a 13” pizza pan, broiling rack, air fry basket and enamel roasting pan.

Good Smart oven with cleanup issues

I thought this would be a good way to consolidate some appliances since I love to air fry, bake and broil. This unit will do that and more in a relatively small footprint. Controls are simple to use and has no connection to the internet or an APP unlike most appliances these days. Time and temperature settings are automatically suggested based on what you want to cook. Either setting can be easily changed. One noticeable miss is that there is no clock on the panel. First I used it to air fry chicken wings according to a supplied recipe card using the roasting pan and the wire grate. I would consider it a success. Next we tried chicken legs the same way. I can make enough for two people and have some room to spare, but not much. Both items came out nicely browned and juicy inside. Now the bad part is that cleanup is really a chore after making chicken that spits all over. While cleaning the first thing you notice is that the internal light will not stay on making it hard to see what you are doing. Cleanup of the inside top of the oven ( behind the top heating elements ) is almost impossible. I don't see a way to clean this area. Right now it is greasy. Cleaning the sides and bottom is a lot easier since there are no access issues and the walls have a non stick coating. Accessories include a fry basket for items that do not drip, a pizza pan and a roasting pan with a wire rack. It is advised to NOT clean these items in a dishwasher. I have made frozen waffles and toast but there was smoke due to the grease from the aforementioned chicken dinner. A normal toaster would have been faster for both items. I look forward to trying air frying with items that don't drip and spit creating a cleanup mess. I'm sure the oven will perform well. I will also try the slow cook function. Of course the first meals I made created a cleanup mess but that should not totally detract from the usefulness of this smart oven but it is something a user should know about before purchasing.

This is a smart countertop oven with multi-function cooking modes. It is a compact unit with sleek design, but not small. So, make sure you have enough countertop space. This replaced my need to have separate microwave, air fryer and an oven. The oven comes with these accessories: Air Fry basket, Enamel roasting pan, 13" non-stick pizza pan, Wire rack, Broiling rack. It is amazingly easy to use and easy to clean, thanks to the non-stick interior. I was able to make fries using the dedicated air fryer option easily and it turned out to be crispy and delicious. The oven is also good at baking pizzas, cookies, toasting bread, reheating food, etc. which I will be using this from now on. The LCD display is extremely useful indicating the mode you are using, the temperature, and the timer. The temperature setting ranges from 120F to 500F. The oven light turns on automatically when you start cooking. You can also turn it on manually to check on the food. Overall, this is a great oven with added functionality that can help replace multiple appliances into one and save space. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a new oven.
