Many appreciate its perfect size, top-notch design, and well-thought-out controls, as well as the convenience of its heating capabilities. The oven is so pretty, I wanted to love it. Unfortunately, I could tell within an hour that it will not work for us because of two reasons. -the START knob SQUEAKS when turned. For $350, nothing should squeak -I heated some leftovers using Smart Reheat, and they were so overdone they were inedible

Maybe we got a dud? Replaced a 20 year-old KitchenAid microwave because it wasn’t heating as well any more. This one looks slick but it does not heat any better than the one we replaced. There’s a odd lag when it starts as if it’s not quite sure it wants to turn on. And then results are meh. Melting a tablespoon (one!) of butter takes over 90 seconds. Food is cold in the middle after long heating times. I would return it if we hadn’t thrown away the box. I’ve seriously considered making a warranty claim with the manufacturer because this cannot be how a new microwave is supposed to work.

It's a safe bet almost everyone has used a microwave oven, but you may have never used one like the Breville Smooth Wave. The familiar number-based touchpad is totally absent from this gleaming little beast, which has been re engineered to deal more with what you cook than how long you cook it. In place of the touchpad are two large knobs and an assortment of small buttons geared to specific functions. In place of the ubiiquitous small LED display found on most microwaves is a large electronic display panel that allows you to define exactly what you are cooking and (if you wish) how long to cook it. But you usually don't have to worry about that since this oven's big claim to fame is total automation. Well, almost. You may have to assign the volume or weight of what you are cooking. After that, the oven will use its built-in programming and/or sensors to determine when it's done. Unlike most microwaves, it also does not always run flat-out when cooking, or even a combination of off and and on cycles. Instead the inverter system reduces the power when required to obtain the best result. Or changes it continuously during the cooking process. The cooking process is very customized (but supposedly automatic) for each type of food. Just use one of the dials and/or buttons to pick what you are cooking -- from fish to potatoes to soft, hard or even frozen vegetables (and many others). Then dial in the amount and push start. There are also automated express buttons hidden behind the door to deal with specific cooking chores that are sometimes devishly difficult to do with a microwave, like soften a stick of butter (without melting it) or melting chocolate (without burning it). A nice touch. In actual use, I found the automatic settings something of a mixed bag. The microwave did an excellent job, for example, reheating some leftover lasagna, somehow managing to evenly heat the food all the way through with no hot or cold spots. Normal flat-out microwaving would make the cheesy top flaming hot while leaving the inside cold. The final result was not quite as hot as I wanted so I hit the "A a bit more" button to get it up to the right temp. In this case, a the oven's Sensor IQ system determined when the food was done, rather than the user specifying the amount or size of the item being cooked. It works by detecting when the steam level reaches a certain point. I was far less impressed with the express setting for bacon. Once you hit that button, you have to dial in the number of slices (3 in my case) and then hit start. Sadly, the end result was bacon that way overcooked to my liking. And it probably would have been inedible burned bacon jerky if I had let it run the full three minutes it selected in the "auto" setting. Admittedly, bacon comes in lots of varieties and thicknesses and the auto setting might have worked well for very thick bacon. But it was terrible for the thin slices I was cooking. Best to choose 2 for the amount instead of 3 when using the auto setting with three slices of thin bacon. So despite all the automation and "smart" functionality here, some trial and error is still required to get the best result. Or you can just skip the automation and decide your own settings. But that would sort of defeat the point of this microwave. This oven comes with a hefty price tag but has some special touches that might convince you it is worth the cost. Aside from the aforementioned new approach to cooking, it has some other luxury features, like a super quiet slow-close door, which works like some soft-closing kitchen drawers. Instead of a big slam, there is a mechanism that catches to the door and slowly and quietly pulls it closed. Very slick. Another huge plus is how quiet it is when running -- easily the quietest microwave I have ever used. And I have used a lot of them. Even the "done" signal is a pleasant tone instead a jarring series of electronic beeps. (But you have an option to use loud beeps if you prefer). Also unusual: The inside of the oven is 100 percent stainless steel. Well, except for the glass turntable. The shiny finish looks nice but is tougher to keep clean than the painted steel interiors on most microwaves. The front of the microwave is also an attractive brushed stainless steel but the rest is painted silver. For all its advance features, however, the oven incorporates some odd design elements that make you scratch your head. The clock, for example, is all but invisible unless you have a very brightly lit kitchen since the backlight on the panel goes off 30 seconds after the cooking cycle ends. And the clock display is replaced with other functions when you are cooking. So you never see it. Another odd feature is how the fan that runs when the microwave is cooking does NOT immediately go off when the cooking cycle is complete. It can stay on for quite a long time afterward, presumably to vent heat from the oven. That is likely to puzzle a lot of users, since no other microwave I have ever used did this. Is the magnetron still running? Is it safe to open the door? Presumably "yes" since panel displays a big "END" to show it is done. But the instructions do not address this issue. The backlight on the panel does change colors, from white to orange, when cooking. And back to white when done. So I guess this is supposed to tell you the magnetron is off. Speaking of instructions, kudos to Breville for actually including a large printed, comprehensive instructions book with this microwave, something you rarely see anymore with any product. Overall, it's a very nice looking, easy to use and mostly well designed microwave with a few luxury touches that make it worth the price.

Worked well for 6 months. Not as powerful as Panasonic microwave with the same rated power. Takes about 70-80% longer time wise to heat water. Problem is now it won't power up. Power supply may have given out. Purchased at the Westminster store. I will get to see how Breville's warranty service is. Last microwave worked for over 10 years. Disappointing reliability for a higher end product.

Sold me opened box instead of new microwave

Best Buy sold me an opened box microwave instead of a new one. 1) The tape on the top of the box was tampered with. 2)There are minor dents in the top corner and top corner of the door as well. It looked like someone had opened the touch pad panel before. 3) There were lots of grease on the door closings. Maybe it is added lubrication? why there need to be lubrication there? I am very unhappy with this purchase.

I have used this microwave oven only one and half year, and it's dead now. No power on at all. I'm so disappointed with this expensive microwave oven. Soft close door was broken a few month ago. And now it developed some sort of short circuit and started sparking internally when I plug in making it a fire hazard.

It's a microwave that looks great and heats things up very well, and it runs quietly while doing so. Instead of push buttons to set time, you have rotary dials that perform this function. The Sensor iQ works fantastic at re-heating meals or coffee/tea, taking out the guess work as to how long to cook whatever your heating up. The presets come in handy. My wife particularly likes the "chocolate" preset to soften all her baking chocolate for her projects. Overall, a great microwave, but at a price. Likes: Soft door close. Easy to read LCD screen when lit. Dials instead of buttons Stainless inside and out Quiet operation Dislikes: Price. No option to keep the LCD backlight on. The clock is hard to see when it's off.
