Works ok. Doesn't always grab the paper and feed it through. Can take a minute to get familiar. I would spend the extra money and get the ones with a feed tray.

Both sets of instructions (hardcopy and online) did not adequately explain how to quickly master the use this product. Had to waste hours of my time to figure it out to include contacting customer service. The customer service representative was trying to figure it out too. Product developers should not assume that users are engineers and should deliver a product that can be simply used by the customers with no technical skills.

The Brother DS-940DW is a portable and wireless scanner that utilizes a manual feed rather than automatic feeder. You need to scan a single page at a time but at LEAST it can scan both sides to save some time. The build is in my opinion cheap and flimsy but definitely solid enough to last. Parts wiggle and the door feels like it will break. It seems like it will hold up to heavy use but I am not a fan of the looseness felt handling the device. The scan quality is excellent for a device of this nature and more than enough DPI for business. It is designed for quick 1-2 page document scans so it you work with packets of paperwork this one isn't for you. This is more for a small business or service business that needs to keep records for receipt, contracts, and invoices. It has a built-in battery that has lasted me about a week before the battery starts blinking red to indicate it needs a recharge. Although it was lightly used to scan business cards and receipts throughout the week, it was good enough for my business. You can use a wire, go wireless, or go microSD card (my favorite). If supports WPS for quick pairing and you also can use the Brother iPrint&Scan phone app as well. You get a faster USB 3.0 port and cord for fast document transfers. You can scan JPG and PDF without scan software which is excellent all with a push of a button. It does monochrome and color along with simplex and duplex page scanning. You can flip the door up and the paper will be fed upwards in tight spaces. It comes with Brother's iPrint&Scan software should you decide to go the USB-PC route. Negatives Only one page at a time without software. Even with software, you have to click per page to add it. Lack of auto feeder. You literally can only scan one page at a time. Build quality is subpar, if this is made for people who work in the field it must be meant to be replaced not to last. SD card not included. You will need to buy one before you unlock 1 of the 3 modes. If an error occurs, you have to guess what it is and ultimately just turn off the scanner and turn it back on again to fix it. Positive Scans both sides in one pass. Scan without a PC using micro SD card. My preferred way to use this scanner. Built-in battery so you can TRULY use it on the go. Automatically holds paper in place. Small and portable enough to fit into your computer bag. Software suite is more than enough to handle most applications. In all, I can definitely recommend this scanner for any road warrior sales person or traveling professional who need to track receipts and invoices before they get back to the office. It comes with everything you need (except a micro SD card) to do your job.

I have to say that I am very impressed with the Brother - DS-940DW. I have used it with my Windows PC, Android phone and Android tablet. It has worked flawlessly with all three of them. I have mostly been using it to upload many household and personal documents that I have been putting off digitizing for a long time. This scanner has made the process a breeze. When using it with the PC, you have better customization of the settings than you do with the mobile app. But that's not to say that it doesn't work great with the mobile app. The mobile app gives you plenty of options including the common size formats and the option to save as a JPG or PDF. What really sold me on this is the fact that it can be used wireless with Wi-Fi. And I must say the connection has been stable. The speed of the scans (one sided or two sided) have been impressive. It does slow down if you set it to the max resolution, but that's to be expected. Although this is not really a photo scanner, I have been pleased with the attempts I've made at scanning some photos. However, if scanning tons of photos is your plan, I would still go for a dedicated photo scanner. But this would certainly work for that in a pinch. Battery life has been very good so far (but it is early). It is much smaller & lighter than you might imagine as well. If I had any complaints it would only be that they should have included a case for it. Wouldn't have to be anything special. Even just a simple sleeve if not a hard case. Being that it is designed to be portable I would have expected it. However, that is a minor gripe and doesn't reflect on just how impressive the Brother - DS-940DW really is. If you are in the market for a scanner such as this I highly recommend it. I would also ad that if you are debating on spending a few extra bucks on this or going with the cheaper non-wireless options out there, I would recommend spending the extra on this. Easily worth it!

Technology never ceases to amaze me! Something that would have taken up half of the space on your desk a few years back with all sorts of plugs and ports to work is now available in the size of something barely bigger than a 3 ring hole punch for a binder.. totally wireless! With this being rechargeable, usable through WiFi or SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and the ability to scan straight to micro sd card, your phone, tablet, pc, or any mobile device is simply amazing. You can also control it through the Brother mobile app. The buttons are very simple, it even has different letterhead sizes marked on the lip of the scan insert area with a little slide to hold its place as it scans. , you can choose from color or monochrome. PDF or JPG file and 1 or 2 sided. The scan speed was great in my opinion much faster than the big boxier desktop scanner. The hardest part about using this scanner was getting the drivers and software to install. I ended up looking up the item on the product website and download it directly from the support section. After that everything was a breeze. All in all I'd highly recommend this scanner

It's nice that all these beta testers got a free product and inflated the rating for this thing, but now I'm left holding the bag thinking should I trouble with returning it. The usability from start to finish is so frustrating. Like at tax time, you need paper scanned to digital, and it's stressful. Enter this worthless piece of crap. Hard to install, hard to start, hard to accomplish the fundamental purpose it is intended for. It's pretty much 98% manual and unintuitive. Do not buy this crap.

There are a LOT of times when an app-based scanner just doesn't cut it. Whether it's lighting or shaky hands from too many coffee meetings, it helps to have a dedicated, wireless scanner that you can have with you. Let's get really clear: the scans from this device are high-quality, color-accurate, and FAST (faster than similar Brother scanner models by a few seconds of processing time). The DS-940DW is about 5 pounds, so not light enough to carry with you in a computer bag daily, but easily able to be brought with you in your car. In terms of form factor, the buttons are pretty clear on the top to switch options (color/b+w, 1 or 2 sided, pdf or jpeg output), along with a power button and a start/stop scan button. Since you can do most of these things via the Brother iScan+Print app, you may never use these physical buttons, but the scan-to-SD feature means you're *ultraportable* with no computer required at all - and that's a great thing for places where it's just too risky to take your computer, but you need a scanner. On the side, there's a "scan to" switch that lets you select either SD card, USB connection to computer, or WiFi connection. The slightly-odd thing about setup here: the scanner generates its own WiFi network that you can connect to... it's on by default whenever the "scan to" switch is set to WiFi. The TL;DR version of what I'm about to say: you're gonna need a geek to help you get this set up the way you'll probably want to use it (wirelessly). In order to connect the scanner to your own WiFi network, the included documentation is woefully sub-par (there are a number of hoops to jump through: connecting via USB, installing and updating the Brother software, then turning on the scanner's WiFi connection, then finding the browser admin tool password in the Brother online documentation - because this info isn't on the QuickStart or PDF manuals, then finally connecting the scanner to your wifi... and then shutting off the internal broadcast network). The USB cable included is USB-A, so if your computer is USB-C only, you'll need an adapter for the initial setup, but it does make finding a charger pretty easy. A slight irritation: the scanner is front-load rather than top-load... which is fine if you only have a page or two to scan, but if you have a stack, it's not optimal and requires extra effort to avoid a mess at the top. Because of how the "cover" sticks out, you can't just set it on its back to make it a top-load... this is an odd user experience for something designed to be ultraportable. Overall, the DS-940DW gets 4 out of 5 stars. It's a must-have if you're on the go and need something better than your phone's camera app to scan documents.

I bought this scanner for it’s wireless portability. The wireless app worked fine, but it was not very portable. The battery never charged after a day and a half! The scanner worked fine when it was plugged into an outlet, but that’s not how I wanted to use it. Since the scanner could not be battery operated, I returned it to Best Buy.

Portable scanners have been around a while, and there are a handful of makers who produce them. Most of them have a long “bar” type design and the Brother DS-940DW is one of those styles, being just slightly over 12 inches long. The basic design has a feeder slot in front which takes documents up to 8 ½ inches wide, a few controls for JPG or PDF storage, how you want to connect, and one or two-sided scans. Basic, no thrills. This particular model has a built-in (non-removeable) lithium-ion battery which should last for a few dozen scans, and is recharged via the included USB 3.0 cable to your computer/laptop or an A/C adapter (not included) should you have one. Mine came charged, and I decided to try it two ways: The first being direct scans from the scanner, to a micro-SD card that you insert into the back. You can flip the lid up on top which will then act as a paper re-direct back if you are tight on space, or, you can leave the lid down and whatever you scan will simply slide out of the back. The unit powered up fine, and within seconds was warmed up and ready to go. You need only to just barely put the paper into the slot, and after a brief wait, it will pull it through and scan. I scanned several documents of varying types, including text only, varied text colors, and text + photos. Putting the memory card in a computer and viewing these, overall, I would describe them as “fine”. Text was sharp, but just slightly lighter and more faded than the original document; just enough that you can see the difference between the original and the scan, but only if you hold them side-by-side. It’s still a usable scan. Photos on documents turned out a bit grainy, however. Scanning a few 4x6 photos, I found them to be mediocre at best, with a very warm color tone and lots of grain in the scanned images. Added tip: When scanning photos, do not raise up the lid as the end of the photo paper will drag a bit due to the exit curve – just let the photos slide through the machine and out of the back to avoid this. Allegedly, you get more control by using the “Brother iPrint and Scan” software (Android or Apple). I tried the Android version. It was INCREDIBLY painful to install this app and get the wifi to work right on the scanner. Long story short – over an hour later, I had an installed scanner. The app kept refusing to find the scanner, the scanner kept refusing to connect to my wifi, etc. Eventually I got it working, but it should not be so difficult. The software is VERY basic, and I never found out how to get it to open up more scanner settings, other than it allowing me to create a multi-page PDF scan, which you cannot do via the buttons on the unit itself. I did not try the direct cable to pc version. I would say if you are traveling and needed a basic scanner to carry with you, the Brother DS-940DW certainly will get basic jobs done. If you survive the ordeal of app installation, it can make for a decent way to import scans into your phone or tablet. But many scanners, most of which cost less than this one, can do the same thing, and without the app headaches. My rating reflects the good (overall scan quality, battery) and the bad (no included case, horrible app experience).

    Brother DS-940DW Compact Wireless Scanner

So I've just received my Brother DS-940DW Compact Wireless Scanner a few days ago and have been putting it through its paces. First off, inside the box comes the usual user documentation including the user manual, USB cable which connects to your computer and a calibrations sheet. After connecting this to my computer, I followed the instructions in the user manual to Brother's website and downloaded the software. You can download the iPrint&Scan software as well as the PowerPDF software. Once everything is installed you can go into the Brother Utilities and tweak the changes to your liking. After tweaking was set, I then ran a few test pages, such as my drivers license, and a few other documents. One of my favorite features of this scanner is the ability to scan front and back with just one pass rather than having to flip the page over. This scanner arrived just in time as I can use this both at home and at work. Once pages are scanned you can save them a jpgs or PDF files. My company tends to send lots of PDF files which can then be easily attached to an email. This scanner also allows you to connect it to your computer wirelessly and also use the companion app (which can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store) to your mobile device such as your smartphone or tablet. It scans fast and flawless, however the include calibration sheet can be used if/when documents scanned come out skewed a bit. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great wireless scanner that is portable and easy to use. Receipt software can also be downloaded and installed from Brother's website to organize and track your receipts. Great for accounting office management.
