Quirky, but a Good Portable Scanner

I bought this scanner to be used with my rental properties. It is a great choice when you are out signing contracts or buying supplies for your properties, it’s a lot better than trying to use your phone. I have had portable scanners in the past, and the DS-940DW was probably the hardest to get started and to use it. I first installed it onto a Windows 10 machine that I use in the office, it killed every USB port on the machine. I would have to go into settings to reset the usb. I did talk to a Brother service tech and they said to try another computer, didn’t really fix the issue, but oh well. I did hook it up to another machine that had less security on it, and it loaded fine. I also hooked it up via Wifi to my phone and it worked fine. There is also a third option of using a sd card, I have not used that, but I am sure it will work fine. Using the Brother DS-940DW was pretty simple after getting it installed. There are instructions to explain how to download the Scan program and the Receipt program. The scan program is basic and does not have a lot of unique features, does pretty much what it says. The receipt program has some useful features, but it isn’t a complete package. Using the receipt program, is like using the scanner program. You insert the receipt slightly and the machine will grab it, you hit the scan button and it scans. I have run into issues scanning long receipts from the grocery store, but most receipts I did not have an issue. But once you scan the receipt it shows on your computer, no they do not have the receipt program for the phone. Once it is on your screen it lets you highlight the basic information, vendor, amount, tax, and date. Then it will save the receipt reading those areas and creating a summary. You can then use this in many different budgeting programs like Quicken. My biggest issue of this is that it is quirky and highlighting the different fields is time consuming. It would have been faster to fill it in by hand and not worry about lining up the boxes. But once you do all of that you can code it however you want for your budget and then you have a copy of the receipt to back it up. I did like using it in the field, making scans of agreements, checks, receipts and invoices was a breeze, you can make multiple page scans, but you still have to do one page at a time. You cannot load multiple pages and hit scan, and they all scan as one. The other thing I do like about it is that you can up the resolution to 1200 x 1200 and get pretty good scans. Overall I believe it is a decent machine for the price, it does have a couple of issues that could be addressed in a firmware update, but for the price and my use of it, I would buy it again if I needed to.

The Brother DS-940DW Wireless scanner is a good product with software flaws. To start off I'm writing this review for use with a MacBook Pro running OS 10.14, and an iPad Pro running iOS 13.3.1. The biggest issue I have with the scanner is the way Brother delivers the software and drivers, and lack of instructions and online support. To install the needed software and drivers of the scanner, you must go to their website and download them one by one (their is no complete package download like the instructions claim). After installing the driver and software, I attempted to do a test run...The fist test I did was with the scanner connected to my MacBook via USB. The image can out crystal clear without any hiccups. The second test I tried was to connect the scanner to my MacBook via wireless connection, but I was unsuccessful. I tried running the wireless setup wizard many times, but never had any luck with it getting to work. I then searched the brother website for help, but sadly there was not much there. I decided to download the brother app for iOS and see if I could get it connecting to my iPad Pro, I ran into the same issues there. I was able to set the scanner up wirelessly as its own network, but in order to do this you lose your internet connection. So, saving documents to the cloud requires you to disconnect the scanner and reconnect to you ISP. All said and done, I do wish Brother would have included a software disc to load, instead of having to download all the software and drivers one by one. This would have made things a lot less time consuming and much more convenient. With that said, the scanner is great when connected via USB. The image is very clear, the time it takes to scan and load is super fast too. The downside is, I was never able to get this scanner to connect to my wifi network to use it wirelessly. I was able to connect it wirelessly using the scanners network, but like I mentioned before, you lose your internet connection and in order to upload documents to the cloud, you have to disconnect the scanner and reconnect to your internet. This make it inconvenient, as this model is suppose to be able to connect to your internet connection. I am hopeful that Brother will come out with an update soon, or even better instructions on how to connect to your Mac. If and when that ever happens, this would easily be a 5 star product.

Bought it for my wife. She loves how easy it is to use. Likes how it does not take up space on her desk and the file system program it has. She is able to scan and file with ease. The only problem that she has encountered is, it gets Jammed every time you start to scan your first copy after that it is fine. So she opens the scanner and closes it and then it works great. She plans on calling Mfg. To see if she is doing something wrong!!! But she loves it !

I decided to try out this scanner because I typically have a stack of papers laying around that I feel like I should keep, but eventually after enough time goes by I end up shredding them. Things like insurance policies, vet bill receipts, etc. that I might want to refer to later at some point, but most times I don't. With this scanner, I figure I can scan all those to PDFs, store the docs in the cloud, then just delete them if/when I no longer need them. In the meantime, they're not causing clutter or filling up my filing cabinet. I've scanned half a dozen document so far, and I think it's going to be the perfect tool for this job. I did the initial setup and scan via USB and my Windows desktop. I did get an error message during the install, but everything worked fine so I guess maybe the error was an error? I didn't really care for the Brother scanning software as I couldn't figure out how to scan multiple pages into a single PDF file. Maybe there's a way, but I didn't see it. But I was able to use my copy of Adobe Acrobat to import from scanner, and then I had all the PDF tools I needed. For speed and simplicity, though, I really wanted to scan using WiFi and my Android phone. I did not connect the scanner to my home WiFi, but just connected my phone to the SSID the scanner advertises. I may look into that as it would save me from having to switch networks on my phone, but that's not a huge inconvenience. Fortunately, the Brother iPrint & Scan app does provide the option of scanning additional pages into one job, and that seemed to work perfectly. I wish it would prompt for entering a file name, though, because it just creates a file called "scan" with the date/time appended. I have to go into my cloud drive software to move the files from my phone anyway, so I just rename them there, but it would be nice to be able to enter a file name when saving the scan. In the app you can specify the scan settings like color, resolution, and single- or double-sided pages. As a quick and easy way to convert my papers to PDFs, this is a great little scanner. I really like how it doesn't take up a lot of space, although some sort of dust cover for it would have been nice. I also like that it's battery powered so I can put it in the most convenient space for scanning and not have to worry about plugging it in. Then I just throw it back on the wall charger (not included, although it does have a USB cable) until I need it next time. I think if you're looking for a scanner that's compact, portable and easy to scan in a few documents occasionally, you should be very pleased with this model. The battery and WiFi make it super flexible to use. It's ability to scan both sides of the page at once at the same speed as one side is impressive. If you have a big stack of documents to scan, though, you might want to look at a bigger scanner with a document feeder as this one you hand feed one page at a time.

Pros: Lightweight Looks snazzy Easy buttons and menus and knobs and switches so you know what to press Good scan quality, duplex is great The flip cover to fee the paper straight up instead of straight out is a nice bonus Cons: No room for a multi-sheet feeder. A shame because I rarely need to scan just 1 page. Wifi is functional, but frustrating. I thought the scanner would connect to my wifi and then let any machine on my wifi receive scans. What actually happens is you have to tell your computing device to join the Wifi of the scanner directly, then you can scan from that device using whatever app is available. Why oh why does this thing use a proprietary USB cable? Now I have to lug around yet another specialized cable. It's supposed to be mobile friendly. This device should be USB-C but it's not. The software experience on macOS. BR-Receipts App + Presto! BizCard 7 + Firmeware Update utility + macOS System Preferences >Printers and Scanners and add scanner. This adds some level of flexibility in that each app has it's own specialized purpose, but I would rather have a single app that just scans everything instead of having to remember the names of each one and then work within it.

I have a mobile business and frequently need to scan documents and receipts for tax purposes or to quickly send to a customer. I used to think using a phone app would suffice, but often times it felt like a lot more work than it should be. Enter the Brother portable scanner! This device connects via USB, WiFi to the cloud, or can scan directly to an SD card if you are somewhere without a computer or internet connectivity. Everything works as advertised and I have been pleased with the small form factor and overall performance. The only thing preventing me from giving it 5 stars was the initial software installation process. It ran at the speed of molasses and it wasn’t really evident if it was frozen in place or just taking a really long time. The software itself is simple to use; i just would have liked more directions included and a better gauge as to how the install was coming along. Overall this is definitely a product that I would recommend to anyone who needs this kind of portable productivity solution.

    Installation nightmare. Performance Fantastic

I am no novice to installing hardware to computers. However, I followed the installation guide to the letter and found that this machine is a nightmare to install. The wireless installation instructions simply don't work at all. I was able to find the ssd and network and the machine repeatedly (five times) did not connect via wireless. I cheated on a sixth time and did the WPS and that worked until I had to restart the computer to install the remaining software. INSTALLATION RECOMMENDATION Ignore the instructions provided. Install the driver software via usb and install everything afterwards including the iPrint software. Then go back and run the wireless install. Once the wifi icon on the scanner is constantly lit in blue, then you have a good wifi connection and then use the iPrint software to scan. You will have to select the machine you want and hopefully the wifi one will show up. I have a wonderful brother all in one that has wifi that was not this difficult to install. I would suggest plugging the scanner into usb first and have the battery completely charged - fully illuminated yellow battery indicator top right in icon window on scanner. USE Once you can get this thing to connect, the rest is a dream - this thing is blazing fast and will scan both sides once the document is inserted into the window. This is where the unit excels - blazing fast scan - straight scan - and it populates into the iPrint screen and has options where to save. Should you want to scan more than one sheet, in iPrint once the first two sides of the first document have scanned, you can select a button in the top of the white window (under the purple "save scanned data" are) "add pages" and then feed the next page into the scanner and repeat until the series of documents you want to scan has been completed. The on the right side of the white area is "save/share" and you can select how you want the document(s) to be saved. This scanner can also scan to microSD card - but that is not provided and I did not test that as a result. OVERALL If the installation was easier and more forthright, I'd have given this unit five stars. I was surprised how fast and easy this was to scan documents and did the test completely on the wireless connection. If you need a portable printer or even an occasional scanner that does not take up a lot of desk space, this is a great product. Brother has really stepped up its game with printers and scanners recently and I'd highly recommend this.

The build quality of this scanner is pretty good. The setup instructions and software can use some improvement. I was able to download the software and connect my MacBook to the printer using the provided USB cable. In order to connect it to my MacBook I had to use a USB to USB-C dongle, which is not provided. Scanning using the USB cable was pretty straightforward. You can also scan without the cable by using the scanner's built in WiFi. The scanner allows you to connect the scanner to your home's WiFi network, but there was no instructions on how to do this in the provided manual. I remembered setting this up with a previous Brother scanner I owned. I forgot some of the steps, so I searched on the Brother website and found the instructions on how to do it. You press and hold the WPS button on the side of the scanner for 2 seconds until the Wifi light begins to blink, you then press and hold the WPS button on your WiFi router for about 2 seconds. The WiFi light on the scanner will turn to solid blue once connected. I'm not sure why they didn't include this in the instructions. The scanner is able to scan both sides of the document with no problems. If you do not have enough room on your desk and do not want the paper going straight back, you can have the paper go through and then turn up by opening the paper guide. The built in battery makes the unit very portable. Overall it's a good scanner.

I love the Brother line of mobile office devices. I have their portable printer and another smaller mobile scanner and I have to say that they are true life savers. From school to work, I can rely on my mobile scanner and printer to get those last minute tasks printed or scanned. The Brother - DS-940DW scanner works flawlessly. The scans are clear just like my actual home scanner. With multiple ways to connect, you can scan any document directly to your device in a matter of seconds. The best thing about it is that it is battery powered! No more having to carry around chargers for on the go jobs. This little scanner gets the job done in no time. The only issue that I had didn’t even come from the scanner itself, but rather from the receipt software. It was a hassle trying to get the software. The Brother - DS-940DW is really compact and takes up a minimal amount of space in your bag. I depend on my Brother mobile devices. This newest addition has definitely been put to work since I got it. When I’m not on the go, I keep it next to me on my desk for quick scans. If you are always on the go and need to scan, the Brother - DS-940DW mobile scanner is what you need. I would highly recommend it.

Easy to set up out of the box and works great scanning one or two sided pages in B&W or color and saving them to your Mac or PC via Wi-Fi or USB connection or to a micro SD card. Additional software to copy and store business cards and receipts while traveling are also available for download from Brother. The unit can be used with or without a USB power cord and is a very nice portable package.

The Brother - DS-940DW Compact Wireless Duplex Mobile Document Scanner is the perfect solution for quickly scanning documents where ever you are in exceptional quality. The scanning speed is pretty good when using the battery, up to 16 ppm. The unit is well designed, durable, lightweight, and easy to use. The software/mobile app are very intuitive, allowing you to quickly save your scanned documents and share them as you need. Attach them to email, send them in supported messaging apps, etc. You can also save scans directly to the microSD card which allows you to transport the files to other systems/devices without sending them over a network/email server. I am most excited about the duplex scanning. It makes the scanning processes so much more efficient. No more scanning one side and flipping the sheet over. I highly recommend the Brother - DS-940DW Compact Wireless Duplex Mobile Document Scanner. It will make scanning documents and transitioning from paper copies to a digital very easy.

The Brother - DS-940DW Compact Wireless Duplex Mobile Document Scanner is a great example of squeezing basic features into a small, portable and wireless form factor. Setup takes some time and attention, but once you're finished it is ready to use. The most welcome addition to it's feature-set is that it scans both front and back in a single pass. However, the main feature that a small mobile scanner loses is the ability to auto-feed multiple pages. Each sheet must be manually fed into a narrow slot. This makes it easy for sheets to scan at a slight angle and skew the image. To be clear, this scanner works well for what it offers. My main concern is with it's practical use. I imagine there are some specific situations where this would be a perfect fit. Personally, I find smart phone apps work fine for casual scanning (though without dual-sided, single-pass of course). When I have larger scanning projects, I need something that offers auto-feed or handles non-standard sizes easily. For the right use scenario, this is a tremendous product. Just consider your needs first.

Quality Scans, Terrible App / Experience

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've thought long and hard about this review... it's broken into multiple parts and some advice for owners. the Brother DS940W is a nice looking portable scanner with WiFi. You can (in theory, more on that later) scan direct to your phone with the App, via your PC over USB, via your LAN, or direct to SD card. In the box is the scanner, a USB cable with a USB 3.0 superspeed connector, and an instruction leaflet. It's important to know the DS940W uses the USB 3.0 superspeed on the scanner itself (the wide-style type) no USB C here where is unfortunate. To scan via your computer is straight forward. Connect the scanner via USB and on Windows it was detected automatically and installed. There is free software included with the scann the Brother iPrint, PowerPDF, with a software key printed on the base of the scanner for redemption. Scanning direct to a micro SD card is also easy. There are 3 dedicated buttons on the scanner which let you adjust the scan preferences for SD scanning and it's easy to use. Mobile scanning. I could NOT get this to work and I'm technical. The Brother iPrint & Scan is terrible. I would give it zero stars. You wireless scan by connecting direct to the scanner from your phone, the WiFi password is printed on the bottom of the scanner. Despite connecting to the scanner, seeing the scanner in the app, every attempt to scan got "connection failed". I tried for 2-3 days, and had a chat online to Brother Support and despite deleting the app, restarting my phone, turning off the WiFi at home... nothing would work. Which is not good for a mobile scanner. HUGE TIP I DID manage to hack and work around all of this pain and make it into a LAN scanner. Here's some tips. Use the Brother iPrint & Scan app and connect via DIRECT WiFi, make sure you're connected to the scanner, click on Machine Settings, click All Settings. If you have done everything right, you will get to a webUI. Login up the top of the page. The default password is "initipass" (no quotes). Tap on "Network" then "Wireless" and you can then connect the scanner directly to your WiFi and make it a LAN scanner. the Brother iPrint & Scan and website, documentation, etc. don't help with any of the above. So suggest you copy this and keep it handy. Once again, the default scanner password is "initpass" no quotes. Make sure you don't have any cookies/ads/scripts blocked or it won't work. If Brother fixed the app, the scanner would be better. I'm giving it 2 stars because it's not really a portable scanner when, at least for me, I just couldn't scan from my phone in the way promised. Once that's fixed, it would be great.

I have been using the DS620 model of Brother portable scanner for the last 2 years. This is a huge upgrade from that. It scans probably 75% faster than the older versions. I particularly like the 2 sided scanning feature that really saves time. The wi-fi feature is also great so it eliminates having the scanner tethered to your computer or laptop. The software is very user friendly compared to previous versions. It is very easy to set up the scanner settings in the menu. I use this product on a daily basis, being in real estate and I am very pleased. If you are looking for an easy to use, portable scanner that does whatever you need this is the one for you. Highly recommended.

The support and instructions supplied by Brother need a SIGNIFICANT amount of work. I have a Mac computer and it was a hassle to say the least to get the scanner connected. However, once I did find and download the right software the machine itself works great. It has wifi, network, or usb connectivity ability. It also can store scans on a micro-sd card (not included) which comes in very handy because sometimes you do not have internet, etc. The quality of the scan is very good and it will copy both sides with one pass which is great. The BR-Receipts software that comes with the scanner has a great deal of potential but is not ready for prime time as of yet. This is a handy mobile scanner that can easily be taken and used "on the go" which is one of its greatest features.

It took me a while to get this scanner up and going, but now that the software is working correctly it is exactly what I needed. The receipt scanner software is the greatest ever. Highly recommend. 4 stars because it took a while to get the software working correctly.
