Great budget Monochrome (B&W) laser printer

The brother HL-L2460DW is an excellent low cost and efficient printer. I use Brother laser printers from monochrome to color and all have been great. The 2460DW is replacing a Brother 2070N I got in 2006 that lasted through multiple drums and toner and never stopped cranking out paper. But it’s gotten old. I got it in 2006 for $140 and the 2460DW is basically the current version of it now for an MSRP of $160. More memory, more features, and 17 years of improvements. I got the 2460DW because I want an Ethernet port on the printer to connect to my home network. Anyone operating wirelessly can still connect and print to the printer. The printer also has wireless (2.4GHz and 5GHz bands) built in, and an USB connection. One big difference between the 2460DW and the non ethernet versions, the 2400D and the 2405W, is the 2460DW has double the memory of them. The 2460DW has 128MB RAM the others only 64MB RAM. The 2460DW also prints faster in single and double sided mode than the other two versions. The 2460 is compact, about 7”x14” and 15lbs. and holds 250 sheets of paper (20 lbs). It has automatic double sided printed if wanted. It comes with a standard toner cartridge, ~1200 pages, and has an XL cartridge, ~3000 pages. The cartridges are the TN830 and TN830XL respectively.
Setup is easy. Basically, unpack and slide in the drum/cartridge unit, plug int and turn on. There is a 1 line LCD screen to help in setup. I was able to assign an IP address directly through the interface. If not, you can use wi-fi or USB. Setting up the printer through the software was simple too, although for wired you use the wireless selection, and it installs fine. The 1 line LCD screen conveys a lot of information and lets you alter the printer as you wish, but it’s easier through the software. For low end printer you won’t get an LCD screen, but, the 1 line LCD line does the job. A sticker on the back has the default password and MAC addresses. The Brother BRAdmin Professional 4 software utility picked up my printer and all its settings with no issues. I can see it with all my other Brother printers. If you don’t want to install the full software and just print, using the Windows add printer function will also work fine. Windows saw the printer and installed the basic drivers on other computers and laptops. You can also get software to print from mobile devices. I had no issues using them. The 2460DW prints up to 1200x1200 dpi. Black and white and grayscale look fantastic. Letter size 1 sided is up to 36 pages a minute and 2 sided up to 8.5 double sided pages a minute. First page can print in less than 8.5 seconds. I used with standard 20lbs paper and had no issues. No jams or blemishes on the paper. The printed area will hold up to 100 pages. There is a manual slot for envelops and other paper types too.
Overall, it’s not too loud and prints come out great. Saves a ton of money over inkjet if you don’t need color. Laser printers are precise, fast, and this one not too expensive. Manuals and printer specific software and drivers can all be found on the Brother website if needed or wanted. If you don’t need a scanner/fax/copier and don’t have huge volumes to print this Brother printer works. Its recommended monthly volume is ~2,500 pages. It’s a simple printer and works, and the build quality seems good. The printer can also be used with Brother refresh if you know how much toner you need on a consistent basis. I expect this printer to last a long time.

Great printer with terrible software

The printer is small, compact, quick and quiet. I'd love to give this a 5-star review, but the software is substandard. It's an essential part of the printer's operation, so it brings the entire score down.
It comes with a suite of five different applications, which seems like a lot for a monochrome printer with no fax or copy capabilities. None of these apps have been updated to match modern Windows design aesthetics.
On Windows 10, the iPrint application (that lives in the system tray to monitor the printer) also leaves an invisible app in the Alt+Tab interface, which is annoying. The firmware updater displays a modal window that can't be dismissed and sits on top of all other apps until you complete the process.
I still recommend the printer because you will probably enjoy using it if your printing needs are basic, like mine. But the software drags the experience down.

These are excellent, reliable, low-cost printers. We own two of the previous model, and have had very good, no-fuss service from them for years. And, the setup process is now much easier.

This the first printer I ever bought for myself. I chose a toner printer because I almost never print anything in color, and even if I did, I don't expect consumer printers to be well calibrated. Further research revealed toner essentially never goes bad, unlike ink, which dries out in 6 months.
Truth be told, if you're using the latest version of Windows 10, you don't need to install Brother's adware. Just look up "printer" in Windows search after setting up the printer, locate it, and Windows will calibrate. It takes longer if you set up it via Wi-Fi.
I find the prints to be crisp and attractive. Quality is as high as you can expect.
I initially set this up via WI-FI, but found the connection dodgy, sometimes taking 5 minutes before the printer even received the signal (and that was after disabling "deep sleep." Look that up).
It's a shame the box didn't have a printer cable, and that's why I'm docking one star. I bought a 15 foot printer cable, and now my printing is instant. I still have not installed Brother's software. Windows Update did add a few drivers, but given the printer was working before that, I'm not sure what difference they made. Installing the official software would just yield ads for refilling subscriptions. No thanks.
I recommend this printer.

The purchase effort was seamless. I ordered online and picked up at the store a couple of hours later. Setup was easy and I have used the printer several times. I expect this printer to be very reliable and efficient since I have used a similar, older model for ten years at my son's dental practice, where I work part-time.

Not What I Was Looking for but Good Enough

This was recommended by my son. I had thought he understood I wanted printer/scanner. Copy I can do with or without. As a printer this is very good. Only issue is it’s very loud. That’s the only reason I’m dropping 1 star. The miscommunication between me and my son simply to illustrate that I don’t understand why printers would ever be made without a scanner, but it doesn’t affect my assessment of the printer. I’m not technical or any sort of a “printer-phile”. This machine simply prints a good looking representation of what’s on my computer screen. It’s also pretty fast. I’d much quieter, it’s easily 5 stars.

Printer works well after being persistent

The physical connection with our desktop and laptop computers worked right out of the box. Getting the WIFI working required more persistence. The installation software did not immediately find this model of Brother priinter. I had to follow the manual installation procedures, but they are not the easiest to follow. Part of the problem is that there are options further down in the list on the printer display that one needs to find. The printed instructions are not easy. I have been using computers since PCs were invented. Eventually, everything worked so that we can now use the AirDrop feature on our Apple Phones for printing.

Solid workhorse--and economic

My first laser printer--I've had inkjet for decades. I read NYTimes Wirecutter's reviews of best inkjets, and decided on a BROTHER. Reddit reviews backed up this decision.
Setup required focussed attention and patience, and it is working well. I am pleased with the duplex printing as a default. For scanning and copying, I use TURBOScan on my iPhone, and then PRINT from that. The font / ink is fuzzier than inkjet, but also massively more economic.
Wish I had made the switch to a laser printer sooner. It is a solid workhorse that has, so far, been very dependable.
