AirPrint Laser Printer with Cool Functionality
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm a huge fan of Brother printers in general because they tend to be super low-maintenance over time, they last for freakin' ever, and their per-page ink/toner costs are low. In short: they make ideal home-based business machines. So how about the MFC-J805DW? Here's the TL;DR version: if you need a reliable inkjet that can scan, copy, and fax while connecting to Dropbox and AirPrint this is your printer. If you print a lot of high-volume color stuff for your business, you want to drop a bit more money and go for the Brother Color Laserjets + the Brother multi-page scanners. Setup of this printer took about 5 minutes, including ink installation (which I can already tell will be much less painful than other inkjets I've worked with). The marketing on the box contends the ink will last for a whole year, and given Brother's track record on toner, I'm inclined to believe them. The paper tray is pretty meager compared to other brother printers, but that's no biggie. The print quality is good for inkjet standards (I'm slightly spoiled in that I have a color laserjet) and would pass muster for important documents that had to be delivered in color. The copy/scan functionality works as expected, however... and this is the one major bummer/stupid exclusion on the whole device: there is no way to do multi-page or even duplex scanning. What? Why? Brother's scanner (the ADS-1700W) is super simple and reliable and the same footprint could easily be thrown into this printer at a cost of an extra pound and quarter inch on the top. Why was this functionality not included? Multi-page scanning is a modern-day business requirement. Aside from that... everything else is super easy to use and works exactly as you'd expect with minimal headaches, setup, or frustration. Everything Brother does tends to be very well-thought-out, which is why the exclusion of duplex scanning or multi-page scanning is just such a bummer. Overall: this is a solid printer with smart design principles which reduce stress and frustration inherent to the process.

Reliable and user friendly
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I received this Brother printer at no cost for an honest review. Having owned 2 other Brother printers in the past, I am familiar with the Brother ecosystem and I honestly believe they are designed with the user in mind because they are very easy to use, practical, economic, and compact; considering all of the things they do. This one will let you scan, fax (over vOIP too), print photos with the adjustable tray, auto duplex (2-sided printing without having to manually change the paper). Also, you can connect this one wirelessly to your network or use a USB cable. BROTHER, WHY DID YOU NOT INCLUDE A USB A/B CABLE?? Yes, it uses one of those USB cables that has an almost square end on it (USB A/B) but it was not included. If you want to connect the printer directly to your computer, make sure you get one of these before getting the printer. On that note, it has no ethernet port, which really is a bummer if you want to connect stuff wired since it's most secure that way. The nice thing about wireless printing is that you can also print directly from your phone. Even wifi set up for the printer can be done from the printer itself, so you can have it up and running before even installing any software on your PC or laptop. The software is a standard set of programs that Brother has so you can use all the features offered. What I like about this printer is that for an inkjet, it's relatively fast with prints. I didn't time it, but I am just comparing it to the standard I've been used to, which leaves me satisfied. This particular model also boasts that it can last up to a year providing you print about 150 pages a month. That's about 1800 pages a year which, for an inkjet, is a bold statement. I will be putting this printer to the test and testing Brother's assertion there (that's 30 pages a day). Of course this printer is designed for small business/office use so they are a bonus if you are buying it for your personal use. They also add the optional convenience of setting you up for ink delivery right on time, so it's automatically ordered when it detects your ink is running out. The printer has a reservoir so that when your ink runs out of your cartridge, you should still have enough to operate until your ink runs out. Again, I'm not putting all these to the test, but I hope that Brother does good on that. Overall, a thrifty choice for a small business or personal use. Also quiet and relatively quick prints. I give it a 4 out of 5

Nice Printer
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a very nice printer. I don’t see how you can go wrong if you need something like this for your home or office. Set up was a breeze. You can generally print right out the box if you’re printing using AirPrint. Just connect to WiFi and you’re done. But if printing from PC then there are a few extra steps. I love the idea of not having to replace ink for up to a year. I hope this last that long.(This is based off of 150 printed pages per month). I like that you can send a fax directly from your PC. The feeder on the top comes in very handy for me. I would recommend this product if you’re in the market for a compact printer that can get the work done. The only con I have is how slow the feeder takes in the paper for scanning. Besides that this is a quality printer.

Excellent Lower Cost Printer and 1 year Ink
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a full function printer with a multi-sheet feeder, fax, copy and print. One unique feature is the ink reservoirs that can allow enough ink to print one year. The cartridges that came in the box were advertised as able to supply 1 year of ink – that’s hard to prove but if true it will be a very cost-saving feature. The manual does indicate the number of sheets as 150 pages/month as a year’s worth of ink usage. Installing utilizes either the included CD or you can download from the Brother site. I did see that you must have the printer and your PC on the same network which is normal. However most routers now have a 5 GHZ and a 2.4 GHZ SSID. Further most routers now also offer a feature to name one SSID and the router will ‘automagically’ pick out the optimal bandwidth network. I take time to say this since my PC did not find the printer at first. I realized that the PC was using the 5 GHZ SSID and the printer can only talk WiFi via 2.4 GHZ. Once I forced the PC onto the 2.4GHZ SSID, then the PC did find the printer. One way to avoid all this is to use a USB cable to hardwire the printer to your PC during installation, once done, you can connect via WiFi. Lastly once defined you can have devices using the 5 GHZ SSID or the 2.4 GHZ SSID and either will find the printer. When you first install the printer it prints a sheet to see if the colors are printing correctly. I noticed the yellow was barely visible, but this turns out to be normal. When I tested a little rainbow photo the yellow was just as bright as the other colors. A color test showed a rainbow very nicely but not as bright as printers that cost twice this price – so that is fair enough. If you want super bright colors from this printer you can set ‘Best quality’ but you also must set ‘Vivid’ color in the properties. Still it was not quite as good as the more expensive printers but quite acceptable at this price point. Build quality is solid and all the features worked as designed. I did like that there is just a power cord and no power brick, you just plug the printer in like any other appliance. I definitely recommend this printer, it is full featured and the one-year ink is a super idea.

could not even set it up
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am 73 and NOT tech savvy. I also don't have anyone to help me. However, all I wanted to do was connect it to use on my desktop computer, not wireless, no mobile devices including a smart phone, etc. I tried the "easy setup guide"--no luck. I tried the manual but found out that almost everything I needed to know could be found in the online manual. HA! I went to the manual on the Brother site and found out that it is something like 360 pages to print and have it for help now and for reference later. Think I'm going to do that???? What I mainly want to do is make copies of articles, recipes, etc. Occasionally, I have needed a fax. This printer is now in a box ready for me to return to Best Buy. I've never had trouble setting up a printer before. After an agonizing, lengthy search and talking to people on the phone, I finally made a decision on another one and ordered it. I hope it is more user-friendly (at least for this particular friend.)

Low End Printer
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Out of the box it was fairly easy to set up. However, not a fan of the little box you have to use to set things up. Not a touch screen and you have to scroll and type like an old phone to get passwords etc. entered. YUCK.... The Ink cartridges were simple to load in but the ink set up took about 5 minutes to load the ink. I was able to download the drivers etc. pretty simply - again, took some time. So, as for my opinion of the printer... not so wonderful. It seems to be very flimsy, not a very sturdy printer compared to my HP all-in-one printer. It does print quickly but saturation isn't great. I was able to print from my phone as well which I love to do. I copied a color coupon sheet that I had printed on my HP to see what the copy quality was and it was very light. I retried and made the quality setting on the Brother "better" but the print quality still wasn't that of the HP and it took way too long "thinking" before it printed. It is fine for everyday printing but not to use for pictures or prints you may need. Not a very large paper tray and a little awkward to load. The ink yield states that it should last for about a year with 150 pages/month... great selling point!! Should have had a USB cable included so that I could directly hook up my computer to print. Not a deal breaker but you would think it would be included. If you are just a "once in a while" printer this will work for you but I don't think it is worth the price tag for an All-in-One printer.

Not Bad Overall
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Setup was really easy, plug and play. Wi-fi had no issues getting that all configured. It advertises slow printing, and that is not false advertising. Printed out some comparison pictures between this and another brand color printer, and I gotta say the colors appear a bit dull on this one. The other printer had much more vibrant colors, especially green and yellow. Paper tray seems a bit shallow, as well. Still, it's passable, and probably will be worth the cost.
