    Fantastic printer, with some negatives

I have now owned this printer/scanner/fax for a few months, and felt I had enough experience to finally provide a few thoughts on how I like it. I'll start first with the negatives, and then go to the positives. Cons: I was having some trouble with the initial install of the printer. The directions asked me to use the USB cable to connect the first time around. Unfortunately, this did not work for me (for some reason, the computer was not detecting the printer during the install). After much troubleshooting, I finally got it to work by unplugging the USB and using the printer to detect the computer (rather than the other way around). I'm not sure why this worked, but it did. Another issue I noticed dealt with the manual feeder in the front. It takes several tries before I can finally get the feeder to attach itself to the paper correctly without giving me a "paper jam" message (even after I follow its directions to use both hands to push it through the feeder). This happened each time I used the feeder, and eventually settled with sticking the paper in the bottom tray instead. I was really disappointed to realize that this printer was not an automatic double-sided printer (which was the main reason why I opted to purchase it in the first place... the Best Buy associate told me it was). Apparently, it was only "double-sided" if I printed manually (in which case, refer to the aforementioned "manual feeder" problems above). By the time I realized this, it would have been too much hassle to re-package the heavy printer and bring it back to the store. It would have been nice to have an ethernet connection option. I don't seem to have issues with the wireless connectivity (though I have read that others have); but I would have liked to have that option of a direct plug-in in case there were problems. Pros: Probably my favorite feature of this device is the scanner. Compared with my old printer, this device scans material quickly and pretty easily. The software for this device is also pretty simple to use, so I don't have much trouble turning a document into a readable PDF, for example. If I am scanning paper documents, the feeder works really well (although, it did glitch once). If I am scanning books, I can get a copy of a chapter in a decent amount of time (it was definitely a lot faster than my inkjet scanner). The second favorite feature is the copier. Although some copy jobs turn out a little darker than I'd like, I can get things to look OK after toggling with the touch screen to change the contrast, brightness, etc. When copying documents, the feeder on top, again works really well, and really fast. Compared with my old inkjet, this printer is fantastic. The print quality is clean, crisp, and very clear. This, I believe is expected from a Brother device. As much as I dislike that this does not print double-sided, it is actually pretty simple to first print all the even numbered pages first, place it back in the bottom tray (face up & with bottom of page going in first), and then print the odd numbered pages. It is a little inconvenient, but at least it saves paper. Overall, I am very happy with this device. There was a bit of a learning curve in the beginning (especially going from an inkjet to a laser), but I think it's worth it for the scanner/copier, and the higher-quality print jobs. If you are still not sure of whether to get an inkjet or laser, I would say that it's important to consider some of the long-term costs. The print quality is much better with a laser printer, and the costs may not be as frequent when it comes to purchasing inkjet cartridges. But replacements for lasers, while not as frequent, can be much more costly (multiple toner cartridges, drum replacement, belt unit).

This printer is great. I prints, prints, and prints.... and prints some more. The color function really helps me out with creating stationary for the small business I work at. Now remember the color isn't really for photo printing. If you want to print photos you need to remember to go into the settings and change the quality and the type of paper you will use. But like I said it's really just a strong work printer that "can" do photo printing. But the BEST PART IS THE EASY WIFI NETWORK SET UP! My job used to have a HP 8500a Plus Pro and my god that thing had so many issues with wifi set up. I would set it up and then a week later it would go off line on the printer side and I would have to reset the thing over and over. We were so frustrated that we moved it to an another area so we could hardwired to a network. But then other issues emerges so we said to hell with this. We had a Brother MFC-8710DW at another location and I was super impressed with it. It was the main reason we purchased MFC-9130CW. Setting up this printer was really easy. Installed the software on my laptop and assisted with communicating to the printer. After that it worked... no errors or anything else. The amount of printing to the amount toner we buy is fair in my opinion. We use the color for printing a large amount of custom stationary like letter heads and envelopes. Printing Reports with color is very fast and the communication between the wireless network and the printer is very fast compared to a office line inkjet. The only thing I will say that I wished it had is the ability to scan to a usb drive. The 8710DW has that and it's a real time saver when you just need a file scanned on the fly so you can email it or print later (without turning on a computer). Scanning on this printer with the auto feeder is the same with any other all in one I have used. Great for a few sheet but you will get some sheets scanned slanted if you start giving it 10 or more. The only scanner that scanned perfectly 100% of the time was the HP 9250c but for almost $3000 for a scanner it better have.

I thought it was time for a change from ink cartridges to toner cartridges. I didn’t need picture perfect quality, but I wanted to be able to print many pages with color consistency for projects or homework. I did some research online for printers and debated for a few days about whether I wanted a monochrome (black ink only) or a colored printer. I settled on the Brother brand, which my sewing machine may have swayed my preference a little. I had owned a couple HP inkjet printers (color) and a Lexmark LaserJet printer (black only) before buying the MFC-9130CW. Before I bought it, I remember asking the Best Buy salesman about the issue of running out of toner for the colors (yellow, cyan, and magenta), and if I was going to be able to use black ink only. That was my biggest concern. The answer he gave me was yes as long as I leave the toners in their respective slots. Well, I have finally ran out of my colors, and I am still able to print in black when I choose the monochrome option. When I choose color/auto, I am not able to print (that may be my settings or it may be how the printer operates). I always connect my printer wirelessly since I print from my laptop, my iPhone, and my iPad. I use the WPS option every time to connect to the wireless and the setup is easy. I have installed Brother’s iPrint&Scan app on my phone which I use to print my OneDrive documents and downloaded documents. I think if I were to buy another printer, I would still stick with Brother and get the duplex printing or advance duplex options. I would like to be able to print double sided automatically to save paper and be able to scan double sided. The reason I didn’t buy the printer with the duplex option was because the printer was more expensive and I wanted to stay in a certain price bracket. I am very satisfied with the MFC-9130CW printer that I have now because every page that I have printed for work or for school have met my expectations. I don’t see any smears or fading ink like I usually do when it comes to having ink cartridges. Maybe ink cartridges are better now and days, but I won’t go back. When I bought this printer in Washington state, I paid $249.99 before taxes in December 2014 (after sale discount and price match). I was happy with the price I paid.

Brother Printer Is The Best Printer I've Ever Used

    Posted

This is my first laser printer and so far I am surprisingly satisfied with this printer. I've been using inkjet printer for many years and when I finally got tired of its constant breaking down and paper jam and ink problems...I decided to shop for Laser. And after inquiring with all my resources, colleagues, and friends, they all told me to get the Brother and don't look anywhere else (I'm one of those ppl that I hate studying about the specs and spending my time comparing different brands, just tell me the exact product to get and I'll take your word for it!). I bought the MFC9130 because I wanted a color printer with multi-function but I was afraid of spending too much on an even higher model since this is my very first laser printer. So far the printer has been printing and copying and scanning for me completely perfect and seamless, the experience really is much better compared to all my inkjet printers. I especially wanted to point out that their phone customer support has been very helpful to me. I had trouble setting up the printer to print wirelessly and I immediately called their support number and within five minutes I got to speak with a live person that is actually located in the states. They guided me all the way through the end until I could start printing on both my Windows PC and iMac computer. I was never able to get this kind of support from any of the other printer companies, and btw the customer support from Brother is free for the lifetime of your purchased product. I really wished I could've known about Brother a few years earlier. I've always had more trust in a product when I know it's made from a Japanese company, so I guess this product has proven that to me once again. (I would like to point out that I'm writing this review completely on my own desire. I am not getting any compensation from Brother or any other companies to write this. I might sound a little excited but it's all because of the experience I've had so far with this printer, it's made my office work so much easier and most important seamless)

This printer is hardly "blazing fast" as stated in the description, although it is adequate. Don't plan on putting it up against a wall if it is not on a rolling cart of some sort. To utilize the manual feeder, as in for feeding letter head or printing envelopes, you must be able to access the back panel. For envelopes, you must open the drop down panel, and push 2 levers (nearly impossible to find as you are leaning over the top of the printer and looking down) downward(very hard so you feel like you might be breaking something) . Then return to your computer, press the print button and rush back to the machine where, at the front of the printer, you carefully feed the envelope at just the right pressure so it catches and pulls into the machine. Then if you are lucky and don't get a jam (happens about 75% of the time), be sure to be leaning back over the machine to catch the envelope as it comes slowly out the back before it drops to the floor. Oh, BTW, if you have not carefully pulled the fax line away from the drop down door opening before the envelope or paper comes out the back, then it will be wrinkled as it bumps up against the fax line inconveniently plugged in above the door panel. If the machine jams, again, about 75% of the time, it can take up to 5 or 6 re-tries to get the machine to accept the envelope. Sometimes it doesn't accept the settings you have chosen on the printer (size 10 standard mailing envelope) and simply shoots out a full sheet of paper out the back set up as a 9X11 envelope (yes, I checked my print set up). Oh lets not forget paper jams, which happen frequently, and most often when you are trying to print envelopes....yes, envelopes. To clear a paper jam, one must take all printer cartidges out, take out another item I presume is a fuser or something to access the bottom of the printer where the paper is jammed. Very tightly I must add. I could go on and on..... Don't buy this machine.

I bought this printer thinking it would be a long term printer instead of the cheap printers I have been buying. Long term the price to print would be less than the other printer I have. Since day one this printer has been a pain. The disk that came with the printer is old so I had to go onto the Brother website. This in itself was not problem and many times I go websites for other programs too. Well then the set up problems began. I got it set up and I found as I was printing things the computer would disconnect itself from the internet and stop printing... mid-print!! So I kept reconnecting every time I needed to print and often in the middle of printing. That got old fast. I contacted the company many times and they kindly had me make many different adjustments. Finally I stayed connected in between printing and it would complete the printing. However every so often it would disconnect again without any explanation. I have never had a connection problem with any of my printers. Even though the printer was connected to the internet and my computer and I was able to print the scanner and copier features were not connected to computer. The scanner is broken. It makes a very loud clicking noise and the image you are scanning is stretched almost the length of the paper. I tried scanning it several times hoping it would iron itself out or warm up or whatever it needed to do. I just had several copies of stretch out images. I ended up going to the library and PAY for copies. I needed copies of my drivers license for the State of Michigan for my tax return because of identity theft issues. I continue to have issues despite the back and forth communication with the company. Now I have to lug this hunk of junk to Best Buy. Anyone who has bought this printer knows it is very heavy. Luckily I bought the warranty but at this point I don't want the printer at all. Brother's customer service was really good but I am still having issues. I have used it to print some things but it is basically barely used. I spent more hoping it would reduce the problems the eventually happen with the cheap printers. This is by far the worst printer I have ever bought.

I wanted to upgrade my existing MFC unit to one that supported AirPrint as we have iPads and iPhones that we wanted to print documents. However, there are a number of manufacturers that provide that capability now. In addition, I wanted to keep color laser functionality, ease of use, wireless connectivity, cost of use and reliability. My prior experience with a Brother MFC device demonstrated reliability over three years without a problem. That gave Brother an edge. However, but it did not mean that other manufacturers had been sitting idle. Many of the MFC units theoretically met this standard. However, after reading the reviews and seeing the equipment, cost of use and reliability were the differentiators for me. There were many reviews that spoke to the high costs per copy with some devices. However, build quality leads to reliability in my mind. Some devices looked and felt flimsy. The Brother unit appears to be very sturdy and well made. At the price point of $435, I didn't see anything that was as good. We've used the unit for about a month now. I'm very pleased with the MFC-9130CW. It's better than I'd hoped.

Printer arrived earlier than expected from Best Buy online purchase. Color LCD (i.e. Laser) Brothers MFC 9130 CW was tightly packed and secure from damage. Nothing was missing-complete. It took between 30 to 40 minutes to unpack, setup, and print the test page. Installed as wireless printer with absolutely no problem. Interfaced with a HP Pavilion 23, 64bit OS Windows 7 SP1. Instruction book and fast set up cheat sheet was easy to follow. If you read the instructions first regardless of your competence, you won't have a problem installing. One issue was the Setup disk did not launch automatically as expected. However, a file search of the disk found the Install Setup file. Clicked on it and everything went as hoped. Those who complain of smudges on their documents is probably from touching the toner strip. Used nitrile gloves to prevent accidental touching of the toner printer strip. Very satisfied with color printed on standard stock printer paper-equal to or little better than most commercial/business color printers. Very easy to switch from color to all B&W documents. Hint: Look at your printer drop down window and look for preferences check box. Great printer at a very good price.

I purchased this Brother All-in-One as a replacement for an older Dell printer I had previously purchased years ago. I was unable to use the wireless functionality w/ the Dell printer because Dell refused to update the software, not to mention, it was like playing Russian roulette each time I clicked the print option using the wired connection. Sometimes it worked, most often it did not. Also, it seemed that I was more than often purchasing replacement ink cartridges. My world has changed! This beauty of a Brother has transformed my life. As a full-time student, this printer has freed up much needed study time which was being sucked up by troubleshooting my old Dell. Very satisfied with my Brother purchase and my home office is complete. Also, I would like to mention, I spent years traveling around the U.S. setting up computer networks for businesses and the Brother printers were always a preferred printer choice over HP based on quality, dependability, and cost.

This is the second Brother MFC9130CW printer we have owned. doing homeschooling requires a lot of printing and we wore out the first unit over a 5+ year cycle. Just purchased this second one because we are so impressed by the clarity and sharpness of both color and black/white printouts. This product is easily maintained and will last you a long time. The wireless capability of this unit is excellent as well. We have never had an issue with it even while sending printing to the system from multiple tablets, PCs, laptops or cell phones at once! Easy to use touch screen feature allows for monitoring of toner levels, number of pages printed over the lifetime of the printer, tools, etc. You can even setup your own shortcuts in the menu! Great product for all purposes: Printing, Copying, Scanning and Faxing. Highly recommended!

I've been using this Brother scanner/printer for about a month and overall I am very pleased with the quality and functionality.. It's pretty heavy and seems fairly well built, and I appreciate it doesn't require a lot of extra space for trays and paper chutes that others often have hanging off the ends. The auto-feeder works well and the scanner is pretty speedy compared to my old one. The first copy prints out in about 15 to 20 seconds from sleep mode, and delivers a solid quality color print. My one complaint is that it took me hours to figure out how to get it to scan documents to pdf files, It's not exactly plug-n-play, with lots of trial and error required, but now that it's working, I am happy with its performance. I did some price comparisons on toner cost among various printers and found the price per page for this machine to be one of the most economical for machines in its class. Very happy with this purchase and would buy it again if I had it to do over.

I have been waiting for this one to be on sale, and my luck it was the Deal of the Day! FYI, the CD that comes with it lists the various OS' and Windows up to Windows 8, but going to brother-usa.com I was able to easily download the Windows 10 software which includes the scanner software as well as the printer driver. Running the Windows 10 all-in-one setup was easy, one click and wait til done. The printer shows up, and a GREAT FEATURE is you can right-click on the printer and the submenu has "Scan", well, at least on Windows 10 I know it does. The printer is much faster than any of my inkjet printers, and making copies is so easy it's basically your personal copier machine. WiFi setup is easy so I was able to stick the printer in a corner of the house with an electrical outlet, no other wires or mess. Super clean and easy to setup. Oh yeah and the reason why I waited for the Brother color laser is the toner is by far the least expensive. Roughly $50 or less...!

How people could rate this printer so highly is bizarre to me. I have been using it for not even a year (May would make it a year) as a secondary printer at the office. The printing is S-L-O-W -- both in receiving the data and in actual output and the color printing is sub-par and not at all vibrant compared to the main office printer (a freestanding Sharp) which, I grant, may be an unfair comparison. The envelope feeding is excruciating -- I can only feed one envelope at a time and, if you don't feed it in just so at the right moment, the printer grabs it wrongly and pulls in a paper from the tray at the same time, thus jamming the printer. I gave the rating an extra star only because it does a decent print job on the textured 100% Cotton stationery (letterhead and envelopes) that our office uses...but ONLY if you feed it gently, 'just so' in angle and timing and wait for the ponderous grip by the printer.

I bought this printer to replace my Konica Minolta magicolor 2300. I like the wireless features and the scan function is nice. The software that comes with the printer is pretty easy to use and has a very user-friendly interface. I like the fact that I can use this to print from my phone as well in or out of the office. The speed of the printer is not too great and the color compared to my Konica Minolta is a little disappointing. I would not buy this printer to print huge print jobs as the toner does not seem to last nearly as long as my other printer did and it is not nearly as fast there will be pauses during multiple pages. If you are looking for a nice home printer that is better than a Deskjet or inkjet this is a nice printer. If you are looking for a printer for a business to print off brochures or larger print jobs for Flyers this printer probably is not going to be a good choice.

I bought this All in One about a 4 weeks ago as I needed a color laser printer for the home office and @ $299 it can't be beat. I had a brother black laser MFC which has been reliable over the last couple years so I decided to stick with Brother for the next purchase as the price and features on this model are really good. This is a solid unit perfect for small business or home office use. Touch screen lets you navigate the menus with ease and the wireless printing from computers and devices is really convenient, even better you can scan wirelessly and the auto document feeder holds a decent amount of paperwork! Finally no more usb cables!! The print quality overall is good but could be better which is why I gave it 4 stars. Other then that no complaints and I am very happy with the purchase.

I needed a new printer to replace a couple of small color inkjet printers that are too slow for today's pace. I researched Brother printers, and knew that is the brand I would buy. This printer has been great so far. It's still a new purchase, so I haven't put it through it's paces yet, but I am still running the toner that came with it, even after several hundred color pages. That's been a nice surprise. The quality is good on marketing photos, and the printer is fast. If there's any downside at all, it's bigger and heavier than I thought it would be, and it's a little noisier than I expected when it's running. Printing envelopes is a little cumbersome because you have to turn the machine around and undo the back, feeding one at a time. A stack is not possible-use labels instead. So the printer being so heavy, that is a bit of a hassle.Overall, I am very satisfied with the printer and hope it lasts for many years.

I used to own an ink-cartridge printer. As I work at home, printing is almost a daily thing - for contracts, photocopying, etc. As we all know, ink cartridge are extremely pricey and runs out quick. The ink takes awhile to print a full page of colored page as well. This is where Brother - MFC-9130CW comes in. This is a very affordable laser printer that shoots out copies FAST! I do not have to worry about running out of ink every other week anymore! Although there are other better printers out there that saves you more money on cartridge (Eco printers?), but the price for the Brother laser printer is within my budget. It get things done fast. Definitely would recommend this to friends that are in need of a printer/scanner/copier and don't wanna worry about running low on inks.

I do not use the printer often or for high volume and I do not fax. I got this because I had trouble all the time with liquid ink printers because of the sporadic use. I check on the replacement cartridge prices before I got the printer and these are fairly priced especially for generic cartridges. I plugged in the cable to my computer because the manual and the gibberish in it was not designed for a guy who just wants to use the thing but supposedly you can print wirelessly. It didn't work instantly so I plugged in the usb cable (NOT PROVIDED) I used the one from my old printer. Then my Mac and the printer worked out the details with me just saying yes. Would it work wirelessly now? I will probably never check it works as it is now - why screw with it?

I would say once you try a laser printer you will never go back because there won't be a reason and you will even ask yourself why didn't I figure this out sooner. I wish somebody would've had told me sooner that spending a little bit more now will save me a lot more later. You know the saying you pay for what you get. After you buy this printer you'll understand exactly what I am saying is now all that money to spend on printer ink every couple of months will be a thing of the past. Ink jet cartridge printers are just bloodsuckers as a suck the money right out of you. I bought my laser printer over a year ago and still have not had a need for to but ink as I am still using what they call beginner cartridges and let me tell you I do a lot of printing and I'm still using the original beginner cartridge

When I purchased a new laptop recently I decided to upgrade my printer fax machine to a color laser model. The Brother looked like a nice design and price was comparable to others so I figured "why not". After opening the box I found the first answer. It's such an old model it does not even come packed with Windows 10 software. Windows 8 is the last version recognized in the instruction book and included software disc. Meaning you are on your own trying to make this thing work. After 2 days of struggling I did get it working with the desktop computer it is wired to, but never could figure out how to make it work wirelessly with the laptop and tablets also in the office. As far as I can tell that's never going to happen. Recommendation: don't buy this printer.
