The Brother MFC-J6555DW INKvestment multi-function printer should be heralded for its versatility, functionality and value.
SETUP:
The printer was well-packaged and included everything needed to get the printer up and running in about 15 minutes. If you are going to connect the printer directly to a computer with a USB cable, you will need to buy that cable separately. I did not have any issues connecting the printer to my wireless network using the provided instructions. There are some software applications that are optional installs—iPrint and Scan and Paperport. I was not overly impressed with iPrint and Scan, but Paperport was required to get some advanced scanning functions of the printer to work well—like 2-sided to 2-sided copying. The auto document feeder, along with the larger scanning glass and paper trays gives the printer a rather large footprint, but the construction looks and feels solid.
NORMAL PRINTING:
Printing from all applications is incredibly fast. Typical office output (e-mails, color presentations, etc.) look absolutely fantastic. Type is dark and crisp; graphics are true to color. The bottom paper tray holds a decent amount of paper, as does the rear tray. There are clear markings as to how to adjust the trays for each paper size, and how to make sure the printable side is facing the correct way. One of the great strengths of this printer is the ability to handle paper sizes up to 11”X17”—and not just for printing, but for scanning, copying and faxing as well.
SCANNING AND COPYING:
Scanning and copying are also blazingly fast. The auto document feeder (ADF) makes the process even faster, as it can handle about 50 sheets of paper. One annoying shortfall is that the ADF does not support 2-sided to 2-sided copying from the printer touch screen. However, you can use PaperPort to scan 2-sided documents by feeding it through the ADF twice; then print the resultant scan as a 2-sided document. (Paperport arranges the page images correctly in the final PDF.) The Paperport software also supports scanning to multiple file types, including searchable PDFs. The iPrint and Scan software does not support 2-sided scanning, saves each page individually as a JPG, and does not support saving as a PDF. Though Paperport is a bit clunky, it does its job well—especially if you have demands that are above the very basic tasks handled by iPrint and Scan.
PHOTO PRINTING:
Photo printing was good, but not great. The photos have good color replication, but the prints are not as glossy as one might expect—they are slightly more matte. This was regardless of the paper used for photo printing. When there were solid colors at the bottom of the photos, there was some slight banding, about 1/4" wide about 1/4" from the bottom of the photo. This was also regardless of the photo paper used or the tray used. Brother Technical Support was very helpful and suggested nozzle cleaning. However, that did not resolve the problem. I sent Brother the photos and perhaps their technical team will find a solution. In addition, the iPrint and Scan software does not have much functionality for photo editing—you need to rely on aftermarket software for that, resave the photos, and then use the iPrint and Scan for printing. For me, I will use another printer for photo printing.
USABILITY:
The touch LCD screen on the printer is fabulous. The menu structure is well laid out, and the screen is large and vibrant. It is very responsive using normal touch pressure and can be tilted in and out for better visibility. Having this type of screen is so much better than similar printers that have much smaller monochrome screens that can be so hard to read in poor lighting or when there are shadows.
INK REPLACEMENT:
Replacing all four ink tanks costs about $100. While that cost is significantly less than replacing smaller cartridges, the cost is quite a bit more than other all-in-ones that use tanks that can be refilled with bottled ink.
SUMMARY:
There are so many things to like about the Brother MFC-J6555DW printer. Being able to handle larger paper sizes, an auto document feeder, super fast printing and scanning, plus a large and readable touch screen—all at a very good price—make this an absolutely wonderful multi-function printer for anyone who works at home or has a small business that has above-average printing needs. Photo printing is not a forte of this printer, nor is 2-sided to 2-sided copying. If your business does not have these needs, this is the perfect printer for you.

Big Beautiful Printer

This is a beast of a printer - it's massive and heavy. Read the dimensions carefully to be sure you have enough room for this.
The printer is blindingly fast at printing text and small graphics - the fastest printer I have ever met. Quality for text is outstanding, not quite laser quality but darn close. Photo printer is it not. Good for the occasional picture, not good if you are going to print a lot of pictures (paper choices are - plain paper, inkjet, and glossy - an indication that this is not a photo printer). Scanning is surprisingly quick also, I blinked and missed a 4 x 6 scan at 300 dpi. Higher resolutions take a little longer, still it is darn fast.
The parts I don't like - if you aren't tech savvy, forget about setting up this printer. There are no easy to follow set of instructions. The software stinks for phone and Mac. It is a bunch of cobbled together pieces that don't work well together and are monumentally confusing. Instructions (I understand nobody does printed manuals anymore) are deplorable, including on the support website. Physical cable connections are buried inside the machine (what's wrong with ports on the case like everybody else).
The biggest bad thing - the paper tray loads in landscape. Yes, you put the paper in 90 degrees from the way any other printer in the world has ever done, and will ever do. I guess Brother decided wide is better than deep for the footprint. I disagree totally.
Some really well designed things. The ink is very easy to access behind a door on the front of the machine (go figure, ink tanks that are supposed to last forever "up to a year", are easy to change). The touchscreen is fantastic and easy to use. There's a beep indicating you left a document on the scanner glass (love that feature). The whole hinge mechanism for the scanner and inner parts of the printer is super well built. Ink levels are measured in pages left to print. The whole thing has a good clean design. It does AirPrint natively, meaning you could print to this from an iPhone or Mac with no additional software.
Some more cautions. The ink tanks included will print over 1,500 pages (standardized print out used to compare printers). If that is one year of printing, well then the box is correct "up to one year of ink included". I think thats a bit disingenuous, the tanks are starter / standard capacity, not one year of ink.
You'll need super long cables to physically connect this thing. The sockets are hidden inside and you lose about 1 foot of cable in routing through the machine. The ethernet jack orange plug (no idea why that is capped) is really hard to pull out.
Photo printing is good. If you have largish areas of black, the printer ends up with some red cast here and there, and there's slight banding. Casual prints, give to friends to see, on plain paper look good. Glossy prints are just fine. Color correction and contrast automatically applied by the machine works just fine on the average.
Ink pricing is decent. Expect to pay about the same as traditional cartridges, except the tanks are far bigger and print a lot more. Brother really really wants you to subscribe to ink.
All things considered, it is a good solid fast printer.

I’ve installed many printers going back to the dot-matrix era and this was by far the easiest experience I’ve had. The printer’s hi-res color touchscreen walked me through the physical setup such as installing the ink cartridges and running alignment checks. Then it was a simple matter on my PC of going to Brother’s setup web page and downloading the installer. This was strictly a wifi installation, and I’m not sure how it did it, but the installer was able to find the printer and configure it onto my network without my entering anything manually – not even a password! The rest of the software package, including drivers, scanning utility, and other tools installed with no problems.
This is a very fast and flexible printer with a wide variety of paper sizes and types supported. We have plain letter paper in the main tray and then use the multi-function tray in the rear for special printing such as sheets of labels. The rear tray opens at an angle and is quite usable without having to have much clearance behind the printer. This is our first printer that uses “ink tank” technology and I’m anxious to see how much more cost-effective it is with regard to ink cost. In the past we’ve used a laser printer for our day-to-day printing and an inkjet only when we needed color, but if the rated page count is close to accurate we’ll start using this printer by default.
Scanning is very quick as it doesn’t have to warm up as my previous scanners always had to do. It will also be nice for scanning large-format pages up to 11”x17” in size. One criticism is that the included scanning utility is pretty basic in features. Specifically, it doesn’t have a “preview” feature that would let me select a specific area to scan such as for scanning a particular illustration without the rest of the page. However, the scanner can be used directly from more powerful apps such as Acrobat, Paintshop Pro, etc.
I am also quite impressed with its compatibility with mobile devices and cloud technology. For example, the printer can be connected to a number of your cloud accounts such as Dropbox and Google Drive and can then scan documents, convert them to PDF or JPEG, and upload to those accounts just using the front panel. Likewise, it can download and print documents from the cloud. Brother’s “Mobile Connect” app is what is used on your smartphone or tablet, with versions for both Android and Apple available.
There are quite a number of settings to learn about, both on the machine and in the drivers and other software. However, for basic usage to print color or b&w on letter size paper it’s good to go right out of the box with the default settings. I’ve always preferred printed user guides but those are gone forever and the guides on the Brother web site seem quite good. I’m sure that I’ll be trying out this printer’s other features as I go along, but after just a few days’ usage I’m quite satisfied with it.
One thing to note about this printer is that it is probably intended for offices or small businesses and is very large compared to typical “home” printers. It fits OK in our “home office” room but be sure to view the specifications and be sure it will fit where you intend it to go. Note in the photo the MFC-J6555DW next to our old Brother HL-2270DW laser printer. For us, it’s well worth the extra space.

So far, I have been very happy with this printer. Some positives after using this printer for a couple of days.
Setup was incredibly easy. Plug the printer in. Install the cartridges in the front which made it very easy. Go through the setup steps on the touch screen and finally install the software on the computer. Everything went incredibly smooth, and I didn’t encounter any problems or had to troubleshoot anything.
Connecting to the Wi-Fi was easy and worked right away.
The software comes with some utilities and a print and scan program. You have the option of scanning from the utility software or from the touch screen on the printer. Strangely you can only set the dpi to a max of 600dpi from the touch screen whereas you can set it higher from the PC software.
The scanner and printer are very fast.
The ink cartridges are huge, and you can print 3000 B/W and 1500 color pages. The cartridge prices are on par with other printers that print far fewer pages.
There are a few downsides that really depend on your needs.
The printer is huge and heavy so make sure you have enough space to put it as it is way bigger than your average home printer.
The photo quality is reasonable but not great. This is probably since this is a business printer and not a home or photo printer, so you need to determine what your primary needs are.
The ADF is single sided so you can’t load a stack of double-sided pages and send it on its way. What’s worse is that you can’t load a stack of double-sided pages scan them all, flip over the stack and scan the other sides. The only ways to handle double sided pages is to do only one page/side at a time on the glass. When copying, you can put the pages on the document feeder, copy one side, then flip the pages over and place the pages down in the paper feed and copy those sides. It works but is more steps than I would like.
It is great printer keeping in mind that it is geared more for business and less for the home. Also keep in mind the limitations of the ADF and photo quality.

The only reason I gave this a 4 instead of 5 is it can be confusing which was to put the original copy for copy or scan. Other than that I’m very happy with it. I’ve had it for about a month now and so far so good.
