I spent a great deal of time investigating printers for home use. I had gotten tired of paying for expensive ink cartridges & decided I didn't need a color printer. This printer is a great value, is fast & the toner cartridge capacity exceeds my previous printer's capacity but at a lower price.

    Disappointed by Brother

I have been a customer of using Brother products since I purchased the MFC-7840w back in 2008. I have had enjoyed the printer so much that I purchased another (MFC-7860DW) for my mother-in-law. Keeping this in mind, I decided to upgrade to take advantage of the new cloud printing technology (wifi direct, google cloud, AirPrint) for my tablet. After unpacking, my excitement quickly faded. Getting the printer connected to wifi was fairly straightforward and before no time I was off to having it setup on the MacBook pro with OS X 10.10. Next, I went to the settings website to peruse the options and I decided to update the firmware via wifi. This is where it digressed into a major wreck. The firmware update failed, but no biggie as a software engineer sometimes things don't take the first time. After this point I tried the AirPrint options. The AirPrint on the iPhone went flawless. The google cloud print was a disaster. It was very non-obvious. Initially I tried just looking at the quick setup and the google documentation which linked to Brother's site to set it up with no success. During this time I tried printing in OS X and noticed that the printer showed offline even though it was connected to wifi and in sleep mode. After messing around and getting nowhere, I decided to manually update the firmware (new version as of February 5th). I believe this helped the consistent online connectivity (for some reason it kept showing offline). On this printer, to scan from the printer via wifi, it actually requires installing the driver package from the Brother site which includes extra bloat (ControlCenter). I have never had to do with the previous models, but I broke down and finally installed the drivers from Brother to get the scanning to work. After initial failure on Google cloud print, I finally discovered that you have to configure cloud print through the local brother printer website other wise it won't work. Bottom line: if you enjoy installing bloated drivers/ firmware updaters from a website to get basic scanning functionality (like in 2005) and want to get easily connected to AirPrint, I would definitely recommend it. However, if you want easy access to advertised features and functionality like you are used to without fuss, I would definitely not recommend.

Very good text and speed. Just OK for images. Text is much clearer than my color inkjet. I haven't ordered replacement toner, but the price/sheet is lower than anything else I saw. The scanner does good color scans. Just wish it had the ability to scan to a local flash drive like my color inkjet.

Sad to give this rating, becuase I love Brother printers - my last one was a Brother, but did not have wireless connection and I just loved it. I thought the L2700DW was perfect since I have both a pc and apple laptops. However it has been one headache after another to get and then keep connection between the printer and computers. Even with the USB cord, it sometimes gives an error message, and often goes offline for seemingly no reason at all. Forget about wireless connection. I got it to work once with my macair, but next time I tried to use it, the connection was not there, and I could not get it to work wirelessly at all - which was the reason for getting this model of printer in the first place. Had the same problem with my Acer laptop. I am currently without a working printer because the laptop does not have the connection even with the USB cord. Frustration plus for over a month of trying and patience.

I have been using this printer for over 2 years and still going strong. I've probably printed 7,000+ pages over this time. On rare occassions, the wifi gets disconnected and I have to do the setup again. But even so, setup is relatively easy.

I have used all the functions of this printer and they have all worked well. It is straightforward and following the prompts is easy. It would be nice if it came with a full-size printer cartridge but for the price that is not a real complaint.

Having limited technological skills, I found it relatively easy to set this printer up and get it operational from both my laptop and smart phone. This is my first wireless printer, and I am thrilled at the convenience it offers.

We have a few of these for our offices and they work great. We really only get 3-4 years out of them though, which is great considering how many prints they run through. Just wish they lasted longer. For the price though, this is an excellent value.
