Checks need to be placed in tray upside down and in reverse order, which is inconvenient. Machine is noisy, especially when first starting to print. Otherwise, a good purchase.

First impressions on opening this printer was how thoughtfully it was packed. I've never seen a printer secured for shipping so well, yet so easy to get setup. Even the mechanism for securing the toner packs, while well designed and secure, was easily removed. Setting it up was a breeze and I never even had to look at the quick install guide. Ditto on setting it up on my network; as a test I decided to see if I could just dive into the LCD control panel and figure it out myself and did so in just a few minutes. Same for setting it up on my Win10 desktop. The neat thing about this was that I was able to just search for new printers on the network and it correctly installed the drivers without any additional software and I was printing in roughly 15 minutes after plugging it in. While I intended to install the complete driver package from the included CD, I wanted to test this as in some offices, installing the printer with a minimal driver package will allow a user to print while keeping them away from other, more dangerous settings. You can also lock off settings changes on the printer itself with a password, another important feature in a multiuser environment. The complete package enables more control, like monitoring and firmware updates. The software is solid and easy to navigate while still being powerful. Printing, copying and scanning are all extremely fast. Print quality is comparable to much higher priced SOHO printers on the market and even though this isn't a photo printer, continuous tone prints like pictures come out great - important if you intend to print small runs of brochures or documentation. Build quality is solid, but I expected that from a Brother printer. This printer is actually replacing a smaller Brother mono laser printer which is over 7 years old and STILL PRINTING like new. I've never had competitors laser printers last that long - including some large names in the business. Pretty impressive. But I think what surprised me most was the sound levels. This is a BIG printer. I thought I might run into issues putting it where I did because of sound level interference but this is without a doubt the quietest laser printer - heck, ANY printer - I've ever owned. I actually thought it wasn't working when I sent my first test print until the print came out. This is an excellent printer for ANY small office or home office and would even stand up to a medium sized network though the paper tray may be just a little small for large volume printing needs. Copying and scanning are simple and fast and the output is excellent. I did a number of test prints using professional test images and couldn't find a single thing with any of the results that would make me hesitate to recommend it. While I'm kind of melancholy about putting "Old Bessie" - the Brother printer this replaced - out to pasture, I think my new printer and I are going to have a great long term relationship. @@@@@@@@ I'll give the old printer to my neighbor, who will likely get a few good years of use out of it. @@@@@@@ I continue to recommend Brother printers as a great investment and I highly recommend this printer for any small/medium/home office user!
