The printer, prints out copies better than the original. As a test I printed a photo that I have of a deer and fawn in the brush. The picture with the standard 256 mb of ram, it's good, but not great. The trees and bushes almost blended together. Printing the same photo with 512 MB of ram, it is a lot sharper and clearer. You can see where the trees start and end and the bushes start and end. There is more detail in the flowers, which in the first test weren't even there.
The upgrade is definitely needed, however, trying to find the correct chip is a great big hassle. I had to contact Brother in order to find it.

I like most of the features, specially the duplex printing. It saves a ot of time and paper. Also, it is awesome to be able to scan multiple pages into a PDF file and save it to a flash drive with just one step. I would highly recomend it.

So far we really like the printer/scanner/fax/copier. We only work part-time so it is not being used hard 5 days a week, but for our needs up to this point of having it almost a month, it has been working great!

Love this printer. Prints great word documents and photos. And, it is fast. Hardly any wait time for the "lamp" to warm up.

I was very excited to get my new all in one. I primarily use the scan and print features because I am making my home paperless by scanning all my bills and other important documents, and I also home school with my 3 children. I use the printer every day and the scanner at least 6-8 hrs a week. I do a lot on this machine. I've loved the printing and scanning, when it works. Unfortunately it doesn't always work. The software or drivers or whatever they call them that come with the printer are not very reliable. I received a control center and a page manager as well - two options for printing, scanning, faxing. The page manager generally wont work if I try to scan from it, but does have features like stacking scans and turning them into a single PDF that I really like. The control center will scan, but it takes a lot of work to set up the scan, and it seems like some features are lost without me ever changing settings or anything. Also the control center will become non-responsive and the only way to get it up and running again is to restart my computer.
I have a imac, which may be the problem. A lot of technology, even if it says it is compatible with a mac, does not run as smoothly with a mac as with a windows based computer. I'm fairly disappointed in how hard it has been to figure out how to work each feature of my new machine. I purchased it specifically because of its capability to duplex and color print. I've had it for over a month now and I've used it daily for at least 1-2 hrs a day, and still I can't get every feature to work as I'd like. I don't believe a product that costs this much money should take numerous call to Tech Support to use. My last printer and scanner I got for free from a friend, and I was able to upload the drivers online, learn to use it, and use all the functions just fine without a single tech support call. I love my machine for all it can do, but I can tell it is going to be a long process learning to use it and working with all the software to get things working the way I want.

Overall a good printer

Overall, this is a great printer/fax/scanner for the price. I compared it to several others on the market and this one by far met or exceeded my expectations. Print speed on documents and quality on pictures is excellent.
I use this on a wireless router and a laptop, so getting it set up took some patience and time but once it was all completed, I have been happy with the results. I have not experienced any connectivity issues.
I finally used the scan function the other day. Because it is set up on wireless, I needed to go into advanced features and set up the laptop so the printer knew where to send the documents to. The manual for this printer easily walked me through step by step on how to do this.
I would strongly recommend this printer to anyone that asks me.
