This Brother Work Smart Series MFC-J497DW All-in-One prints/scans/copies wirelessly, with pretty decent quality, and you can print using black ink only, without having to replace the colored ink cartridges. I got it on sale for $60. This printer uses LC3011 Standard Ink (prints up to 100 pgs.) at $13 per cartridge and LC3013 High Yield Ink (prints up to 400 pgs.) at $23 per cartridge. The cost is phenomenal compared to Epson's higher priced Epson 126 printer ink. However, Epson's print quality seems slightly better than Brother's standard ink, but not enough to make much of a difference for my printing needs at this time (school papers). I haven't tried printing on Avery labels or heat transferable paper yet or using the high-yield ink yet. FYI: The color refills were not in-stock at Best Buy, just the LC3011/3013 Black ink. :-( Office Depot/Max may have them on the ground in their store. I wish I'd known this before I ran out of my colored ink cartridges. Set up was easy and didn't take too long using the step-by-step instructions provided in the box and following the prompts on my computer to set up the wireless feature. My printer is plugged directly into the wall and I can print wirelessly from my laptop from other rooms in the house. My router is, also, plugged in elsewhere in the house, but everything still functions seamlessly! You can plug your printer directly into your computer if/when you choose to. Brother Work Smart Series MFC-J497DW All-in-One comes with printed instructions, CD ROM (not needed to set up wireless connection; I didn't need to use it for wireless set up/connection/operation), telephone cord (only needed if setting up fax), and 4 brand new in the package ink cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, and yellow)! :-) I bought this to replace my Epson Workforce WF-3530 All-in-One printer due to higher cost of ink refills $60/4 pk. and it won't let you print using black ink only without having to have color refills in, too. Ugh! But, it does print in high quality and I got lots of printing out of it, otherwise. This Brother Work Smart Series MFC-J497DW All-in-One does allow you to print using black ink only without having to replace the color cartridges that are low or empty. I've had my Epson WF-3530 for 7 years now and it still works perfectly and with the same great quality, speed, and accuracy! I hope that my Brother Work Smart Series MFC-J497DW All-in-One Wireless printer lasts just as long and with decent quality! I give this 4 stars only because the print quality is slightly lacking and it prints slower than I'd like it to. If not, I still have my old faithful workhorse, Epson WF-3530!

I seldom use my printer, but I still need a printer. The last two printers I had were Epson, and they produced very good, water-proof copies and prints. But because my usage was intermittent, I would often experience clogged ink cartridges. The extra large ink reservoirs offer the best value on ink costs, but I couldn't find any info on whether low usage would result in clogged lines. I considered Epson as well as Brother and Canon as replacements. While HP has about 40% of the market it also has a high rate of problems, so it was never a consideration for me. In the end I chose this Brother because it seemed more durable and ink cost is reasonable. Furthermore, Brother printers self clean if the printer isn't used often enough, so I don't worry over much about when was the last time I printed. This printer is EXTREMELY quiet, but it's not especially fast. Print quality seems fine. Ink is fast drying. Tested water resistance of a print made on inkjet paper a couple of weeks ago by running it briefly under the faucet then wiping it with a paper towel. Ink transferred to the paper towel, though the print was not smeared. I consider this quite acceptable. My previous printer lasted about 6 years and the average seems to be just over 4 years. Value can only be determined by time, but so far I am optimistic.

I have an HP All-in-One that is beyond it’s useful life according to HP. And I don’t like the way HP tries to force you to buy their cartridges. I also have a Brother mono Laser printer that is beyond its useful life according to Brother, but still working great. After my iPad Pro purchase, I decided to buy a new all-in-one with these required features: AirPrint Duplex printing Document feeder for scanning or copying I tried looking online, but it was impossible to determine which models had these features, so I went into my nearby Best Buy Store. An associate helped me find this Brother model, which had all my required features with a great price on the machine and the ink. Given my great experience with my Brother mono laser printer, this seemed like a perfect choice. After reading some horror stories in reviews about how difficult it was to set up printers, I was pleased that AirPrint worked immediately with my Apple devices. It took me a couple of minutes to get it hooked up to my PCs. Instructions were great. As it happened, I had to hit the WiFi button on my router to get the PCs hooked in — so a 2 or 3 minute installation time. It would have been nice to have a SD and jump drive port instead of saving stuff to the cloud, but that’s not such a big deal. In short, this is perfect for a compact, inexpensive all in one.

This review is mainly for people who are technically challenged, like me. This is not my first printer. But it is by far an easy one to set up, which is what I mainly was looking for when searching printers. The CD ROM makes it almost effortless. After complete set up I attempted to print a page. It wouldn't work. I had forgotten to uninstall the Epson I was previously using. (That one was a total PIA, I swear against that brand.) Remember, I am not good at this stuff. After problem solved I printed a page. Pretty fast job, compared to the above mentioned. And to my untrained eye, especially clear. I only need this for occasional home printing and scanning/copying. I hope this simple review helped someone in the same boat as me. And I signed up for the ink program. I just want to keep everything simple. In the Epson, I used foreign ink, trying to save a buck or two. It clogged it up beyond repair. Just a word to the wise.

Bought this printer as it was highly recommended and liked the inexpensive brother ink refills. Setup was easy and didn't require installing any large software suites for basic usage, a nice contrast to some other manufacturers. The printer seemed well made and the feature set great for the price. Unfortunately it seemed no matter what settings I chose for print quality or the print source I couldn't get the printer to print anything other than grainy and faded pictures. Even after installing Brother's software suite and editing the color profiles to print in high quality I couldn't overcome this. This may have been specific to the printer I received, but it ultimately was a dealbreaker. I returned this printer and purchased a color laser in it's place. For the extra money spent I've been very happy so far with the other printer. If you're looking for a printer for basic text and are ok with subpar color graphics this is a great price and has some welcome features (cloud applications etc). Just wasn't the right printer for me.

Overall I am super happy with the Brother MFC-J497DW all-in-one inkjet printer. I gave up paying high prices for refill cartridges of another well known printer manufacturer and am so glad I made the switch. The print speed and quality are quite good. I use it for home and very light office work. I really like the auto-feed scanner so I don't have to swap individual pages to scan multiple page documents. Set up was easy and it works great with the wireless network. Here is my 1 not positive review: the USB cable connects under the scanner glass. You have to lift up the glass and feed the cable in from the right side. This eats up a couple of feet of cable when it would have been so simple just to put the plug on the back of the machine. Other than that one minor complaint, this has turned out to be a really good little machine.

I needed ink for my HP5580, cost was $49, I seen this Brother Printer on sale for $49. I gained wireless connectivity, FAX and the price for ink is much cheaper, I can purchase high yield cartridges under the price of the HP. Setup was super easy as the software guides you through the setup and included pictures. Setting up the wireless was extremely easy using a the USB cable option but you will need to have a USB cable to complete the setup if you chose to use a USB A to B Cable. The Printer updated the firmware, updates the application without me making any guesses, simply allowing the Application to do everything. I download the Brother iPrint&Scan App for my phone and printed a picture.

So far, I'm neither impressed or disappointed. Setup was a breeze, took maybe 10 minutes. Connected/set up with 2 Macs, recognized instantly. Print quality is so-so; text is not as razor-sharp as Epson printers I also trialed, but ink costs are very low, as well as initial equipment costs. ADF is slow to feed, but I can spare the extra 20 seconds for the low price. I would have preferred text output to be a bit sharper given previous experiences with Brother, but given the low cost, quick setup, and slim (seriously, it's tiny) profile, I'll consider it a worthwhile tradeoff.

I had bought an HP printer which just would not work with my PC. Kept hearing from HP that it was a Windows 10 compatibility issue. So I sent it back and went to Best Buy. I chose this Brother Printer and could not be happier. Got it home and had it set up and installed in about 5 minutes. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I have used the printer a lot and it is very reliable. Even something as mundane as loading the paper is easy. Had a jam and the instructions which came up on the printer display walked me thru the clearing process. I also found that ink was not that expensive. For the price you are not going to beat this printer.

I needed to replace my older HP printer because of the Ink cost. I needed replacement cartridges and it was cheaper to purchase this printer then purchase the ink cartridges. Installation was easy and completed with no issues. You must use a USB Cable for the setup and the box does not contain a cable. Printing works very well, scanning is very easy and the Brother Utilities Applications takes care of everything needed. You may also use the front panel on the printer to preform function such as scanning. Replacement cartridges are 1/3 the price of my previous printer.

For the price, can't beat this little guy! It's been working very well for a light-duty printer/scanner/copier; won't use it as a fax. Simple to link to desktop; colors aren't vivid as they are in more upscale printers, so if that's a deal-breaker for you, look elsewhere. Ink cartridges last about as long as they did in my previous HP and Canon printers. Wish it printed 3X5 index cards but 4X6 come out well. Look, if you want a reliable, affordable printer, don't overthink this -- on sale, they're less than $50 and you'd blow that going to a couple movies.

I like the design of the printer. Front load tray is a nice option. The setup was rather length but was very easy!! The set up pretty much walked you through step by step. The lengthy set up could be that I am using a rather dated laptop. The document feed is nice for making copies of multiple documents. I have not nor do I plan on using the FAX machine so I can not comment. I am only giving 4 stars because I have not had a chance to really put it through its trials. I usually am partial to HP but I thought I would give Brother a shot. I have been pleasantly surprised so far.

Im fairly satisfied on my first use of this product. I was used to have printer which prints faster than this but as long as it gets the job done, Im fine with it. It took 30-45 mins to install the printer and my laptop but after those steps are done, its a breeze. Printing is fine but the ink kinda messy looking for me so Im debating whether its from the paper vs machine. I need to have more prints to figure that one out. It dries out pretty fast. Overall, I can recommend this to a friend. Ink is cheap compared to hp and epson so its a huge plus.

I had this printer for 3 months. So far it's been great. I dont print much. Even though the printer tells me i am low on ink, it's stil working fine with the original cartridges that were in there. Setup was easy. I love that i can print straight from my iPhone. If i stumble into a multi-page PDF on my phone, i just print it on paper and read it, rather than trying to review it on the phone. The scanner works great, but the scan SOFTWARE could definitely use some improvements. It's not too noisy, but a little louder than i anticipated. not a big deal, but something to keep in mind.

I’ve never owned a printer for myself and I bought it this year (2018) as a college freshman. I’m really glad I choose to buy this printer instead of being discouraged by others reviews. I definitely think it was a great deal and would recommend to anyone that needs things printed from time to time. Easy set up and you can even get easy replenish. I love the fact that it has a screen, WiFi connectivity, and that it’s a 3 in 1 printer.

In short, Brother brand ink jet printers are .. winners! This is my second MFC type printer from Brother. My last one was just replaced/donated because .... it would never break down, and I just wanted to experience newer technology. Setup was ultra simple, and the print quality is excellent. I fully expect this printer to be trouble free for many years just as the last Brother MFC all-in-one printer I purchased.

Had an Epson for years that finally gave out. I did a LOT of research before I decided on this printer. So far, not disappointed. It prints quickly, photos look great, I love that I can print from my iPad. WiFi setup took a little bit of time - make sure you have your network info and login handy. Otherwise, setup was a breeze. Haven't done any volume printing yet, so I can't comment on ink longevity/cost. Only big criticism thus far, is that I wish you didn't have to take out the paper tray, adjust the guides, and load photo paper every time you want to make a print.

I bought this printer for use with my HP Chromebook and am not disappointed. Set up was quick and easy. The only problem I had was trying to figure out how to add it to my Google Cloud Print (which has nothing to do with the printer itself). Despite the learning curve of getting it added to Google Cloud Print, I was able to have this printer up and running within 15 minutes! It prints clearly and the printer doesn't take up much space. All in all this is a great printer for its price point if you're looking for something simple and easy to set up.

When my HP deskjet died I did online research. Then I headed to Best Buy. I need a printer/copier for personal use only. The saleswoman at Best Buy listened to my needs and then suggested the Brother. I had not considered that brand but she convinced me. The set up was a little frustrating at first but I googled my issue and solved it. I have not used the scan or fax features yet - not sure I ever will. I am very happy with this purchase. Hopefully it will be a good workhorse machine and last as long as my last printer did.

I had a high quality photo I tried printing on both fabric transfer paper and photo paper and they both showed horizontal lines. I assumed it was a feed issue. I returned it and bought an HP and determined that it probably was a feed issue since the photo came out perfectly with the HP. I contacted Brother and requested they call me about the issue before I returned it and I got a lousy email instead. I've had issues with HP in the past and desperately wanted to avoid them but Brother gave me no choice but to go back to them.
