It's great lens. Very sharp, fast autofocus, good Image Stabilization and top-notch build quality — all in a small, lightweight package. Best news is, you can shot from hand. I use Canon 400mm DO IS II + Extender 1.4x III and get sharp Images.

    Great Optics

The optics are five stars. Deducted one star for a design issue and two packaging issues. The design issue is not having a screw mount for a front lens protective UV filter. I don't like ever touching the lens surfaces and typically install a high-quality UV filter before I put a new lens on the camera. The other two issues I have are the included lens hood and the lens case. While both are very good quality, they are quite expensive and have drawbacks. The lens hood, installed makes the camera lens appear very large with all the white (the hood is approx. 6" X6") and will attract more attention than I care for. I also don't like the knob attachment for the lens hood. I purchased a bayonet mount black (dark gray) fiberglass/carbon fiber from Zemlin Photo for approximately 30% of what Canon charges for the lens hood. I plan to save (unused) the Canon lens hood for a backup and/or resale, but my go-to lens hood will be the Zemlin Photo hood. The Canon lens case is very nice, but expensive and large for travel. I will be looking for a quality soft-sided lens case to facilitate traveling with the lens. I would have rather saved the $1K for the included hood and case.

This lens is excellent and the details it captures is amazing. Not as heavy as other super telephoto lens so I can shoot handheld as well. A bit on the pricey side but well worth it.
